Into The Woods (Cinema Review)

January 8, 2015 By Mike Martin Leave a Comment

Starring: Meryl Streep, Anna Kendrick, Emily Blunt, James Corden, Johnny Depp
Director: Rob Marshall
Running Time: 124 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: January 9th 2015

Ah, Stephen Sondheim, writer of amazing tongue-twisting lyrics, flat tunes and dark themes. That’s been his formula for many a year – the flat tunes aren’t deliberate presumably – and they are all present and correct in this film version of his adult take on fairy tales. Adult is certainly the word here, the underlying theme being human beings’ reluctance to grow up and face the real world, and the terrifying prospect of sex, while superficially there are blindings, stabbings, a prince whose eye wanders, an absent father, and plenty of death.

Throw in a top-notch cast – and James Corden – and you get a polished, great-looking and sounding, entertaining fable. The story itself peaks a little early and there are longeurs in the story of the giant, but overall it’s a successful adaptation of Sondheim’s stage musical. [Read more…]

Anna Kendrick in Into The Woods

Anna Kendrick in Into The Woods

While the Into The Woods trailer we got a few weeks ago was pretty cool, it did have one major element missing – singing. In fact if you didn’t know anything about the movie you wouldn’t have even known it was a musical.

However now we get our first chance to hear the cast sing in a new featurette about the film’s story, which includes Anna Kendrick, James Corden, Emily Blunt, and Meryl Streep singing I Wish and Streep adding a bit of Stay With Me too.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Into the Woods is a modern twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests. This humorous and heartfelt musical follows the classic tales of Cinderella (Anna Kendrick), Little Red Riding Hood (Lilla Crawford), Jack and the Beanstalk (Daniel Huttlestone), and Rapunzel (MacKenzie Mauzy)—all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife (James Corden & Emily Blunt), their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the witch (Meryl Streep) who has put a curse on them.

Meryl Streep Gets Witchy In A New Into The Woods Poster

September 17, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

into-the-woods-poster1A few weeks ago we got the first trailer for Disney’s taken on Stephen Sondheim’s classic musical Into The Woods. Now a new poster for the movie has emerged, giving us a fresh look at Meryl Streep as the movie’s evil witch.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Into the Woods is a modern twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests. Into The Woods Teaser Trailer – Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, Chris Pine & Anna Kendrick go fairytale

August 1, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

James Corden & Emily Blunt in Into The Woods

James Corden & Emily Blunt in Into The Woods

It’s a bit of an odd choice for Disney’s first teaser for Into The Woods not to really acknowledge that it’s a full-on musical, but that’s presumably to intrigue people who don’t know much about Stephen Sondheim’s classic stage show and who may be a little uncertain about lots of singing.

This may be because Disney knows they’ve already got a tough sell with Sondheim aficionados, who’ve been grumbling that some of the darker edges will be removed for the film version to make it more firmly family friendly. As a result they know they need to draw in an audience far beyond the hardcore musical crowd.

And as with the images released a couple of days ago, they’re also still keeping us guessing by not fully revealing Johnny Depp as the big bad wolf.

It looks very pretty though and will hopefully keep to the spirit of Sondheim’s show.

The movie is about a baker (James Corden) and his wife (Emily Blunt) who head into the woods to confront an evil witch (Meryl Streep), whose curse prevents the couple from ever having children.
Along their way they encounter various fairytale characters such as Anna Kendrick’s Cinderella and the Big Bad Wolf (Johnny Depp). Tracey Ullman is set to be the mother of Jack the Giant Killer, while Christine Baranski is Cinderella’s mean stepmother. Anna Kendrick meanwhile is Cinderella, with Chris Pine as her Prince Charming.

Rob Marshall is directing from a screenplay by James Lapine. [Read more…]

Disney’s D23 Expo has now ended, and amongst the news about their live action film we got a first look at the logos for Tomorrowland, Maleficent, Into The Wood and Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella (the last two via /Film).

Here’s some official info on the movies: ‘Maleficent is the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the 1959 classic “Sleeping Beauty.” A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal—an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom—and perhaps to Maleficent’s true happiness as well. The film also stars Sharlto Copley, Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Miranda Richardson, Juno Temple and Lesley Manville and is produced by Joe Roth and directed by Robert Stromberg. Linda Woolverton, the screenwriter of “Alice in Wonderland,” “The Lion King” and “Beauty and the Beast,” wrote the screenplay. “Maleficent” opens in theaters on July 2, 2014.
