Les Miserables (Blu-ray)

May 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Eddie Redmayne, Amanda Seyfried, Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Russell Crowe
Director: Tom Hooper
Running Time: 164 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: May 13th 2013

The shortest acting performance ever to win an Oscar is Beatrice Straight in Network, who picked up the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award despite only being on-screen for five minutes and forty seconds. Anne Hathaway can’t beat that, as her Fantine gets a comparatively lengthy 15 minutes of screen time in Les Miserables. However I’d argue she won the Best Supporting Actress gong purely for the 277 seconds she spends singing I Dreamed A Dream. [Read more…]

Brand New Les Miserables Song Arrives In New Featurette

December 11, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While most of the score for the film version of Les Miserables is what lovers of the musical will know from the stage, there’s one new song that’s been added for the movie – ‘Suddenly’. Now a featurette has popped up all about the song, which was written by the creators of the original musical, Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil. The featurette has people talking through most of it, but it does let us hear parts of the Hugh Jackman sung ditty.

The featurette is largely about the director, writer and producer telling us all about why this new tune was a necessary addition, although many will be wondering whether they’re protesting a little too much. Many people feel the only reason to add a fresh song is so that the film is  eligible for the Best Original Song Oscar, which is only open to new music written specifically for a film. It’s a strategy that’s worked before, such as the movie version of Evita picking up the award for the new song ‘You Must Love Me’.

Whether it’s needed or not, you can take a bit of a listen to ‘Suddenly’ above.

Five Clips From Les Miserables Debut – Can you hear the movie stars sing?

December 3, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s not too long now until Les Miserables hits cinemas – it’s released Christmas Day in the US and January 11th – and it’s already got loads of Oscar buzz, with the likes of Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman emerging as early favourites for the acting Oscars, with many suggesting Tom Hooper could be getting his second Best Director Academy Awards.

To help increase the hype, five new clips have been released of the famed songs from the musical, including On My Own, At The End Of The Day and A Heart Full of Love. So get you fill of the likes of Hathaway, Jackman and Russell Crowe warbling away in what looks like it should be an excellent movie.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Les Misérables is the motion-picture adaptation of the beloved global stage sensation seen by more than 60 million people in 42 countries and in 21 languages around the globe and still breaking box-office records everywhere in its 27th year. Helmed by The King’s Speech’s Academy Award®-winning director, Tom Hooper, the Working Title/Cameron Mackintosh production stars Hugh Jackman, Oscar® winner Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne, Aaron Tveit, Samantha Barks, with Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen.

‘Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, Les Misérables tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption—a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit. Jackman plays ex-prisoner Jean Valjean, hunted for decades by the ruthless policeman Javert (Crowe) after he breaks parole. When Valjean agrees to care for factory worker Fantine’s (Hathaway) young daughter, Cosette, their lives change forever.

‘In January 2012, the world’s longest-running musical brings its power to the big screen in Tom Hooper’s sweeping and spectacular interpretation of Victor Hugo’s epic tale. With international superstars and beloved songs—including “I Dreamed a Dream,” “Bring Him Home,” “One Day More” and “On My Own”—Les Misérables, the show of shows, is now reborn as the cinematic musical experience of a lifetime.’

New Les Miserables French Poster Debuts

November 27, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

I’m always a little wary of responses to films based on the very first screenings, as it often seems audiences are more prone to praise the film, based on the giddy feeling of being one of the very first to see it. However in the case of Les Miserables, the reaction to the first looks at the movie that took place over the weekend have been difficult to ignore.

Some loved it so much they’ve already pretty much decided Tom Hooper will get his second Best Director Oscar, with many of the actors likely to be top runners in the Academy Awards race too. Although we may well get some more measured responses over the next few weeks, it definitely seems the film will be a hit and it’s now certainly one of the frontrunners in the Oscar race.

With the US release coming at Christmas and a UK date set for January 11th, we’ve now got a new French poster for the movie, which gives everything a bit of a classic look, with the traditional photoshopped multi-head image that final posters love.

Anne Hathaway Says Les Miserables Haircut Made Her Look Like Gay Brother

November 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Anne Hathaway doesn’t mind suffering for her art. Due to her role as Fantine in Les Miserables, she was nearly bald when she got married in September. However she didn’t mind as it meant she got to take on an extremely coveted role in a movie that’s been 27 years in the making.

Over the weekend, the first screenings of the movie took place, with critics and various others invited to take a look, and while they weren’t allowed to post full reviews, the comments have been extremely positive. Many have singled Hathaway out for praise, suggesting that despite not having a massive amount of screentime, she’s now the frontrunner for the Best Supporting Actress Oscar. They also suggest Tom Hooper may win a second Best Director Oscar following The King’s Speech.

Hathaway was at the screening at New York’s Lincoln Center on Friday (November 23rd), and admitted that having her hair cut so short resulted in something unexpected. THR reports she told the audience, “When I eventually looked in the mirror I just thought I looked like my gay brother.”

Hathaway first revealed she had a gay brother, Michael, back in 2008. Her family has been strongly supportive of him, even leaving the Catholic Church due to its extremely anti-gay position. Anne also donated part of her wedding money to Freedom to Marry, which fights for equal marriage across the US.

Les Miserables hits UK cinemas on January 11th.

Gorgeous Annie Liebovitz Les Miserables Images Online

November 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

If you want a gorgeous looking photo, there are few people better to go to than Annie Liebovitz, whose sharp eye rarely goes wrong. She also has a great way of making things look classic and romantic, so she’s the perfect person to shoot a series of portraits for the upcoming Les Miserables, which she photographed for Vogue and are now online.

They are beautiful pictures and hopefully Tom Hooper’s movie will look just as good.

Here’s the film’s synopsis: ‘Les Misérables is the motion-picture adaptation of the beloved global stage sensation seen by more than 60 million people in 42 countries and in 21 languages around the globe and still breaking box-office records everywhere in its 27th year. New UK Les Miserables Trailer – Can you hear Russell Crowe sing?

November 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It seems the film version of Les Miserables will feature more dialogue than the almost completely sung stage version, as evidenced in this trailer – although there’s still plenty of singing going on, including our first chance to hear Russell Crowe flexing his pipes and Javert.

Things Get Coupley In New Les Miserables Character Posters

November 3, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s only a couple of months until the long-gestating movie version of the record-breaking musical Les Miserables finally makes it to the big screen. To whet out appetites, a couple of new posters have arrived, showing off two different sides of the film. For those who like romance there’s Marius (Eddie Redmayne) and Cosette (Amanda Seyfried), while those hoping for something a little nuttier get the duplicitous innkeepers, the Thenardiers (Helena Bonham Carter and Sasha Baron Cohen).

These posters, which you can see above and below, come after a series of others showing off individual characters, which you can see here, here and here.

Tom Hooper’s adaptation of the classic musical hits UK cinemas on January 11th, 2013 (the Christmas Day on the posters refers to the US release). Here’s the synopsis: ‘Les Misérables is the motion-picture adaptation of the beloved global stage sensation seen by more than 60 million people in 42 countries and in 21 languages around the globe and still breaking box-office records everywhere in its 27th year. October 12, 2012 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Yesterday we posted a Les Miserables character poster featuring Hugh Jackman’s Jean Valjean. Now it’s the turn of Rusell Crowe’s Inspector Javert, who gets to look circumspect in his poster. Tom Hooper’s adaptation of the classic musical hits UK cinemas on January 11th, 2013.
