Live By Night (DVD Review) – Ben Affleck tries to make a gangster classic

May 23, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Ben Affleck, Elle Fanning, Chris Messina, Zoe Saldana, Chris Cooper
Director: Ben Affleck
Running Time: 123 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: May 22nd 2017 (UK)

Live By Night has been Ben Affleck’s passion project for several years. He started working on the adaptation of Dennis Lehane’s novel since shortly after it was published in 2012. However, it kept getting pushed back as be strove to prove he was a director worth the film’s hefty budget, and also while he honed the script (yes, he wrote the screenplay too, as well as directing and starring).

After Argo won the Best Picture Oscar, Warner let him loose on Live By Night, but to be honest, it might have been worth delaying it a little longer and bringing someone in who could have tightened the script and made more of the themes that should have tied it together. [Read more…]

New Live By Night Trailer – Ben Affleck directs a Prohibition era crime thriller

November 11, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

live-by-night-slideBen Affleck has been working on bringing Live By Night to the big screen for around four years. Now it’s preparing for its release, with Affleck hoping it’ll be as well received as his last directorial effort, Argo.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Oscar winner Ben Affleck (“Argo”) directed and stars in the dramatic crime thriller “Live by Night.” Affleck also wrote the screenplay, based on the award-winning best-seller by Dennis Lehane; it marks the second collaboration for the fellow Boston natives, following the acclaimed drama “Gone Baby Gone.”

‘“Live by Night” is set in the roaring `20s when Prohibition hasn’t stopped the flow of booze in an underground network of gangster-run speakeasies. The opportunity to gain power and money is there for any man with enough ambition and nerve and Joe Coughlin, the son of the Boston Police Superintendent, long ago turned his back on his strict upbringing for the spoils of being an outlaw. But even among criminals there are rules and Joe breaks a big one: crossing a powerful mob boss by stealing his money and his moll. The fiery affair ends in tragedy, setting Joe on a path of revenge, ambition, romance and betrayal that propels him out of Boston and up the ladder of Tampa’s steamy rum-running underworld.

Starring with Affleck are Elle Fanning (“Maleficent”), Brendan Gleeson (“In the Heart of the Sea,” the “Harry Potter” films), Chris Messina (“Argo,” “The Mindy Project”), Sienna Miller (“American Sniper,” “Foxcatcher”), Zoe Saldana (“Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Avatar”), and Oscar winner Chris Cooper (“Adaptation,” “The Town”).’

The film will be in UK cinemas in January. [Read more…]

Live by Night Next For Ben Affleck, While He Drops Out Of Focus

January 11, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ben-affleck1While his acting career may have been on the skids, Ben Affleck has become one of the hottest directors in Hollywood thanks to the likes of Argo and The Town. He’s had several films on the go as his potential next project, but he’s now confirmed that Live by Night, which he signed up for last October, will be his next project. He’s also dropped out of the film Focus.

Affleck told MTV, “Basically I’m doing a movie called Live by Night and I’m trying to meet this schedule in order to do it, in order to meet the back end so that I can have it released at the right time, and I just hadn’t gotten enough writing done and it became clear that if I took that job and was in Buenos Aires for three months [to do Focus], I was going to miss the deadline. I had to choose between getting the movie out when I want to or doing this one, so reluctantly I chose the [former]. But I love those guys, I love Kristen (Stewart), I was really excited to work with her, I think the movie is going to be fabulous, and I’m sure they’ll find a great guy for it.”

Focus, written by Crazy Stupid Love directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, is about a con man who takes a young thief (Kristen Stewart) under his wing, although he falls for her and the relationship crumbles. Years later, they meet up again and begin to complicate each others lives even further.

Live by Night meanwhile reunites Ben Affleck with author Dennis Lehane. Ben Affleck’s directorial debut, Gone Baby Gone, was adapted from the Boston novelist’s book. This new movie centres on the son of a police chief who takes to a life of crime.

Leonardo DiCaprio Plans New Dennis Lehane Adaptation, Live By Night

April 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Leo DiCaprio must be a real Dennis Lehane fan, as it was Leo who got Martin Scorsese to take on Shutter Island (with him in the starring role, of course) and now he’s got Warner Bros. to pick up the film rights to Lehane’s upcoming novel, Live By Night. DiCaprio plans to both star in the film version and produce it through his Appian Way production company.

The book takes characters from the author’s novel, The Given Day, and follows them into the Prohibition Era (The Given Day was set in the late 1910s and early 1920s). The Given Day had been set up at Columbia Pictures back in 2008, for Sam Raimi to direct. However, the option expired on the project and was acquired by Warner Bros., which now controls all rights to this novel trilogy. Live By Night will be published later this fall and it appears at the moment DiCaprio is more interested in getting this new book on the screen than starting off with The Given Day.

The film will now go onto Leo’s ever growing pile of possible projects, and we’ll have to wait and see when it’ll get made. (Source: Variety)
