Live By Night (DVD Review) – Ben Affleck tries to make a gangster classic

May 23, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Ben Affleck, Elle Fanning, Chris Messina, Zoe Saldana, Chris Cooper
Director: Ben Affleck
Running Time: 123 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: May 22nd 2017 (UK)

Live By Night has been Ben Affleck’s passion project for several years. He started working on the adaptation of Dennis Lehane’s novel since shortly after it was published in 2012. However, it kept getting pushed back as be strove to prove he was a director worth the film’s hefty budget, and also while he honed the script (yes, he wrote the screenplay too, as well as directing and starring).

After Argo won the Best Picture Oscar, Warner let him loose on Live By Night, but to be honest, it might have been worth delaying it a little longer and bringing someone in who could have tightened the script and made more of the themes that should have tied it together. [Read more…]

New Live By Night Trailer – Ben Affleck directs a Prohibition era crime thriller

November 11, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

live-by-night-slideBen Affleck has been working on bringing Live By Night to the big screen for around four years. Now it’s preparing for its release, with Affleck hoping it’ll be as well received as his last directorial effort, Argo.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Oscar winner Ben Affleck (“Argo”) directed and stars in the dramatic crime thriller “Live by Night.” Affleck also wrote the screenplay, based on the award-winning best-seller by Dennis Lehane; it marks the second collaboration for the fellow Boston natives, following the acclaimed drama “Gone Baby Gone.”

‘“Live by Night” is set in the roaring `20s when Prohibition hasn’t stopped the flow of booze in an underground network of gangster-run speakeasies. The opportunity to gain power and money is there for any man with enough ambition and nerve and Joe Coughlin, the son of the Boston Police Superintendent, long ago turned his back on his strict upbringing for the spoils of being an outlaw. But even among criminals there are rules and Joe breaks a big one: crossing a powerful mob boss by stealing his money and his moll. The fiery affair ends in tragedy, setting Joe on a path of revenge, ambition, romance and betrayal that propels him out of Boston and up the ladder of Tampa’s steamy rum-running underworld.

Starring with Affleck are Elle Fanning (“Maleficent”), Brendan Gleeson (“In the Heart of the Sea,” the “Harry Potter” films), Chris Messina (“Argo,” “The Mindy Project”), Sienna Miller (“American Sniper,” “Foxcatcher”), Zoe Saldana (“Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Avatar”), and Oscar winner Chris Cooper (“Adaptation,” “The Town”).’

The film will be in UK cinemas in January. [Read more…]

Ben Affleck To Star In & Direct Witness For The Prosecution Remake

August 21, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ben-affleckAfter seeing his career in the doldrums, Ben Affleck has certainly made a spectacular comeback, as he’s now much in demand as both an actor and a director. Now he’s set to take both roles in a new take on Agatha Christie’s Witness For The Prosecution, according to Variety.

Christie’s short story was previously made into a movie in 1957 by director Biilly Wilder, starring Tyrone Power, Marlene Dietrich, Elsa Lanchester and Charles Laughton. It was set ‘in the Old Bailey in London, Laughton plays a lawyer who represents a man (Power) accused of murdering a rich widow who had become enamored with him and made him the main beneficiary of her will.’

There’s no news on whether the new version will change this setup, such as movie it to the modern day or relocating it to the US. It’s not clear either what role Affleck will play.

Ben Affleck To Direct Solo Batman Movie With DC Comics’ Geoff Johns Co-writing

July 11, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ben-affleck-batman-first-picThis year’s Comic Con has been quieter on big movie news that usual, but one major bit of news concerns Warner/DC’s plans for a solo adventure for the rebooted Batman, which it’s been revealed that Ben Affleck won’t just star in, he’ll also direct.

Ben also plans to  co-write the movie alongside DC Comics’ chief creative officer Geoff Johns. Apparently the decision grew out of the shared creative vision Affleck and Johns found they had while on the set of Batman Vs. Superman. They’re already started work on a script.

It won’t be Affleck’s next directorial outing as he’s due to start shooting Live By Night in September. The solo adventure is unlikely to be in cinemas before 2019 at the earliest, by which time we’ll have seen how the Caped Crusader is affected by both Batman Vs Superman and the Justice League movies.

Warrior’s Gavin O’Connor Takes On Tell No One

November 22, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

gavin-o-connorTell No One has certainly been through the works in Hollywood. The adaptation of Harlan Coben’s novel has already had the likes of Ben Affleck and Andrew Dominik attached to direct, but they’ve all since moved on. Now a new helmer has moved in, with Variety reporting that Gavin O’Connor has stepped up to the plate.

Tell No One is about a paediatrician who is out one night frolicking by a lake with his wife when she suddenly vanishes and he is severely beaten when he tries to find her. When she turns up murdered, he is the prime suspect. That’s until she’s declared a victim of a caught serial killer. Years later, bodies turn up in the same spot and the nightmare is repeated, the paediatrician again under suspicion. Right around that time, he’s given evidence that his wife wasn’t dead at all.

Gavin O’Connor is best known for directing Warrior, and more recently was a last minute replacement for Lynn Ramsay on the upcoming Jane Got A Gun. There’s no news on when Tell No One might shoot.

Ben Affleck Plans Geopolitical African Thriller

October 26, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ben-affleckBen Affleck is busy wearing his acting shoes at the moment, shooting David Fincher’s Gone Girl and preparing to play Batman in the highly-anticipated follow-up to Man Of Steel. However he has no plans to stop directing and now Deadline reports Warner Bros. has acquired an untitled thriller for Affleck to star in and direct.

Will Staples (World’s Most Wanted) is set to write the script. It’s said to be set in Africa and follows a group of mercenaries hired to kill a ruthless warlord. The project is described as an action movie that also explores themes of philanthropy and the moral ambiguities of foreign assistance in other countries.

Affleck himself had the original idea for the movie, which he pitched then to Will Staples, and Warner signed on to develop. It’s in the early stages at the moment, so don’t expect it anytime soon.

Scott Cooper In Talks To Direct The Stand After Ben Affleck Drops Out

August 24, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Scott-CooperThe long saga of trying to make a movie out of Stephen King’s The Stand continues with the news that Ben Affleck has dropped out of the director’s seat. Warner isn’t dropping the film though, as Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart) is already in early talks to take the helm, according to THR.

Affleck is out due to his commitment to starring in Gone Girl and yesterday’s news that he is playing Batman in Man of Steel 2. Warner Bros. and CBS Films had to move fast to find a replacement, as they have a limited window in which they can make the adaptation before losing the rights.

The story is set in a post-apocalyptic Earth after a synthetic plague wipes out most of humanity. It followd a group of survivors fighting the nefarious Randall Flagg. The novel was originally released in 1978, but the author re-released it in 1990, revising and adding portions to the story. David Kajganich (The Invasion) is writing the screenplay adaptation.

The Stand did previously become a two-part TV mini-series in 1994, but this will be the first time it’s come to the big screen.

Ben Affleck May Direct Historical Epic Bunker Hill

March 19, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ben-affleckBen Affleck is now a Best Director Oscar winner, but since he complete Argo, he’s been careful not to rush into another movie, instead mulling his options, putting a few projects into development as well as loosely attaching himself to a couple of others.

Now there’s another one in the mix, as Deadline reports that Warner Bros. has picked up the rights to Nathaniel Philbrick’s upcoming book ‘Bunker Hill: A City, A Siege, A Revolution’ as a potential vehicle for Affleck. It would take Ben back to his native Boston, although a couple of centuries ago.

Here’s the description of the book from Philbrick’s website, ‘Boston in 1775 is an island city occupied by British troops after a series of incendiary incidents by patriots who range from sober citizens to thuggish vigilantes. After the Boston Tea Party, British and American soldiers and Massachusetts residents have warily manoeuvred around each other until April 19, when violence finally erupts at Lexington and Concord. In June, however, with the city cut off from supplies by a British blockade and Patriot militia poised in siege, skirmishes give way to outright war in the Battle of Bunker Hill.

‘It would be the bloodiest battle of the Revolution to come, and the point of no return for the rebellious colonists. Philbrick brings a fresh perspective to every aspect of the story. He finds new characters, and new facets to familiar ones. The real work of choreographing rebellion falls to a thirty-three year old physician named Joseph Warren who emerges as the on-the-ground leader of the Patriot cause and is fated to die at Bunker Hill. Others in the cast include Paul Revere, Warren’s fiancé the poet Mercy Scollay, a newly recruited George Washington, the reluctant British combatant General Thomas Gage and his more bellicose successor William Howe, who leads the three charges at Bunker Hill and presides over the claustrophobic cauldron of a city under siege as both sides play a nervy game of brinkmanship for control. With passion and insight, Philbrick reconstructs the revolutionary landscape-geographic and ideological-in a mesmerizing narrative of the robust, messy, blisteringly real origins of America.’

If Affleck does make, it’s would be a huge project, although as he proved when he recreated the 70s for Argo, he’s got a great eye period detail.

This isn’t likely to be his next film though, as it’s believed he’ll take on an adaptation of Dennis Lehane’s Live By Night next.

Argo (Blu-ray)

March 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Ben Affleck, Bryan Cranston, John Goodman, Alan Arkin, Victor Garber
Director: Ben Affleck
Running Time: 120 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: March 4th 2013

Although it’s not too unusual for the winner of the Best Picture Oscar not to also pick up the Best Director gong, it’s very rare for the winner of the biggest prize not to even get a nomination for its helmer. However that’s what happened with Argo, marking the first time it’s occurred since Driving Miss Daisy in 1989. (Incidentally it’s also now tied with Gigi as the Best Picture winner with the shortest title).

It was a real oversight on the part of the Academy, because it’s not like Ben Affleck’s direction is irrelevant to the movie’s success. Indeed it’s him probably more than anyone else who makes the film work. [Read more…]
