New Live By Night Trailer – Ben Affleck directs a Prohibition era crime thriller

November 11, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

live-by-night-slideBen Affleck has been working on bringing Live By Night to the big screen for around four years. Now it’s preparing for its release, with Affleck hoping it’ll be as well received as his last directorial effort, Argo.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Oscar winner Ben Affleck (“Argo”) directed and stars in the dramatic crime thriller “Live by Night.” Affleck also wrote the screenplay, based on the award-winning best-seller by Dennis Lehane; it marks the second collaboration for the fellow Boston natives, following the acclaimed drama “Gone Baby Gone.”

‘“Live by Night” is set in the roaring `20s when Prohibition hasn’t stopped the flow of booze in an underground network of gangster-run speakeasies. The opportunity to gain power and money is there for any man with enough ambition and nerve and Joe Coughlin, the son of the Boston Police Superintendent, long ago turned his back on his strict upbringing for the spoils of being an outlaw. But even among criminals there are rules and Joe breaks a big one: crossing a powerful mob boss by stealing his money and his moll. The fiery affair ends in tragedy, setting Joe on a path of revenge, ambition, romance and betrayal that propels him out of Boston and up the ladder of Tampa’s steamy rum-running underworld.

Starring with Affleck are Elle Fanning (“Maleficent”), Brendan Gleeson (“In the Heart of the Sea,” the “Harry Potter” films), Chris Messina (“Argo,” “The Mindy Project”), Sienna Miller (“American Sniper,” “Foxcatcher”), Zoe Saldana (“Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Avatar”), and Oscar winner Chris Cooper (“Adaptation,” “The Town”).’

The film will be in UK cinemas in January. [Read more…]

High Rise (Blu-ray Review)

July 17, 2016 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: Tom Hiddleston, Sienna Miller, Jeremy Irons, Luke Evans, Elisabeth Moss
Director: Ben Wheatley
Running Time: 120 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: July 18th 2016 (UK)

Director Ben Wheatley was certainly ambitious when he decided to take on JG Ballard’s cult, 1975 novel, High Rise. It’s one of those books that for decades many have proclaimed unfilmable, but there’s no doubt Wheatley and his cast and crew have put their all into it.

Set in a dystopian version of the 1970s (or at least a hyper-real 1970s), Dr. Laing (Tom Hiddleston) moves into a new, high-rise tower – supposedly the pinnacle of modernist living. His apartment is on one of the middle floors, while the poorer people live near the bottom, and the higher up you go, the richer and more rarefied the people become. [Read more…]

Mississippi Grind (DVD Review)

March 7, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Ben Mendelsohn, Ryan Reynolds, Sienna Miller, Yvonne Landry, Alfre Woodard
Director: Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck
Running Time: 108 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: March 7th 2016 (UK)

There are undoubtedly some people who will watch Mississippi Grind and wonder what the point of it is, as not a vast amount happens other than two guys drifting around and gambling on various things. However, others will appreciate this look at two men leading lives on the periphery of society, who lack connection but may have found some sort of direction in each other.

Gerry (Ben Mendelsohn) is an inveterate gambler who’s lost his wife and child, he’s massively in debt and has run out of time to pay it off. Then he meets Curtis (Ryan Reynolds), who also loves to bet, but still has life and verve – something Gerry is severely lacking. While he’s a drifter, he couches it in terms of being a free spirit who goes where life takes him. [Read more…]

High-Rise Trailer – Tom Hiddleston gets naked in a retro-futuristic apartment building

February 9, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

high-rise-trailer-slideHigh-Rise got slightly mixed reports at its film festival screenings (although some people absolutely adored it), but there’s no doubt it looks like a really interesting movie – and everyone who’s seen it has praised its ambition and visual style. That style is certainly on show in the new trailer for the movie, which you can watch below.

Some of you will also be pleased to know that the trailer gives us a look at a bit of near nudity from Tom Hiddleston, who seems to have a thing for naked sunbathing in the movie.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘1975. Two miles west of London, Dr. Robert Laing moves into his new apartment seeking soulless anonymity, only to find that the building’s residents have no intention of leaving him alone. Resigned to the complex social dynamics unfolding around him, Laing bites the bullet and becomes neighbourly. As he struggles to establish his position, Laing’s good manners and sanity disintegrate along with the building. The lights go out and the lifts fail but the party goes on. People are the problem. Booze is the currency. Sex is the panacea. Only much later, as he sits on his balcony eating the architect’s dog, does Dr. Robert Laing finally feel at home…..’

Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Irons, Sienna Miller, Luke Evans and Elisabeth Moss star, with Ben Wheatley directing this adaptation of JG Ballard’s novel. High-Rise arrives in UK cinemas on 18th March.

American Sniper (DVD Review)

May 31, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Bradley Cooper, Sienna Miller, Kyle Gallner, Luke Grimes
Director: Clint Eastwood
Running Time: 132 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: June 1st 2015 (UK)

Often when an actor has a passion project it turns out to be something that should never have been attempted and ends up as a very expensive way to massage their ego. However, while Bradley Cooper was one of the major driving forces behind American Sniper, it was always clear he was onto something interesting. Indeed, at one point Steven Spielberg even signed on to direct, before the gig went to Clint Eastwood.

While Clint may be known as a bit of a hard man actor, he really brings the emotion out of what could have been a rather stereotypical war story in other hands.

The film is about Chris Kyle (Cooper), who found ‘fame’ of sorts when he became the Navy SEAL sniper with the most verified kills in US history. However, the movie isn’t just about his time on the battlefield but also its effects – both how he deals with what he’s doing while on tour (which for a sniper is oddly personal, as it involves very deliberately finding a single person and snuffing out their life) and also when he arrives back home and is suddenly supposed to jump into ‘normal’ life again. Charlie Hunnam Going To Lost City of Z With Robert Pattinson

February 3, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

charlie-hunnam-slideIt’s taking a while to get the cast of Lost City Of Z cast together. A few months ago Robert Pattinson and Sienna Miller came onboard, joining Benedict Cumberbatch. However the Sherlock star’s Doctor Strange commitments have cause him to drop out and so he’s now being replaced by Charlie Hunnam, according to Variety.

The film will be directed by James Gray, based on David Grann’s book about doomed Amazon explorer Colonel Percy Harrison Fawcett (Hunnam).

Here’s a few more details about the book: ‘In 1925, Fawcett ventured into the Amazon to find an ancient civilization, hoping to make one of the most important discoveries in history. For centuries Europeans believed the world’s largest jungle concealed the glittering kingdom of El Dorado. Thousands had died looking for it, leaving many scientists convinced that the Amazon was truly inimical to humankind. But Fawcett, whose daring expeditions helped inspire Conan Doyle’s The Lost World, had spent years building his scientific case. Captivating the imagination of millions around the globe, Fawcett embarked with his twenty-one-year-old son, determined to prove that this ancient civilization—which he dubbed “Z”—existed. Then he and his expedition vanished.’

The movie should shoot later this year.

Foxcatcher (Cinema Review)

January 8, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Steve Carell, Mark Ruffalo, Channing Tatum, Sienna Miller, Vanessa Redgrave
Director: Bennett Miller
Running Time: 134 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: January 9th 2015 (UK)

So that’s the Best Actor Oscar sorted then. Steve Carrell, that lovely chap from the US Office and 40-Year-old Virgin, has gone deep to play the deeply disturbed, and disturbing, John du Pont, and the results are stunning. The film itself is impressive on many levels, if a little one-note, and not quite satisfying, but Carrell’s performance is utterly mesmerising.

The charming, likeable, warmly funny persona is utterly gone. In its place is a portrayal of du Pont, the heir to a vast chemical fortune, enormously wealthy but painfully lonely. His mother, Jean (Vanessa Redgrave), looms like a huge dark cloud over his life, her disappointment in her geeky, fragile, unattractive son all too obvious. She pours her love into horses, he into the sport of wrestling – horses are stupid, he says, all they do is eat and shit. His love of his pastime is so great he decides to basically take over and run the US wrestling team to train them for the 1988 Olympics. Top of his shopping list is Mark and Dave Schultz (Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo), brothers who won Gold in Los Angeles in 1984. [Read more…]
