Magic Mike XXL Is Coming Independence Day 2015, & Channing Tatum Talks Up The Film

A couple of weeks ago an autumn shoot was announced for Magic Mike 2 –  which is now known as Magic Mike XXL – with Gregory Jacobs directing. However at the time it wasn’t clear when we’d actually get to see the movie.

Now a July 3rd, 2015 US release date has been announced, according to ERCBoxOffice. That will pit the movie against Terminator: Genesis, which opens on July 1st, 2015. However as they’re very different film, they probably won’t cannibalise each other’s box office too much.

Channing Tatum is currently co-writing the script with his Magic Mike collaborator Reid Carolin. He also recently spoke to MTV, where he told them, “[We started writing] probably like two months ago. With my partner Reid I was like, ‘Ah it’ll write itself, it’s fine’ – not the case. Not the case at all.”

He adds of the cast, “I think everyone’s gonna be back, I think. Obviously no one’s deals are done which is always kind of scary.” Therefore assuming everything works back Matthew McConaughey, Joe Manganiello, Alex Pettyfer and Matthew Bomer will all return.

As for the plot, he says, “This one will be a road trip movie. Without giving a lot away, we don’t wanna make it a really serious, slice-of-life movie. We want to have reality in it, but we don’t want to make it some dark drama. There was some darkness in the last one that I think surprised people and shocked people. This one, we want there to be a lot of conflict and a lot of struggle, but we also want there to be a shit-ton of fun. A shit-ton of just ridiculous stuff that you would never see in a movie.”

Magic Mike became a surprise hit in 2012, earning $167 million worldwide from just a $7 million production budget.

Magic Mike 2 Gets Its Director & Title, With An Autumn Shoot Planned

March 30, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

magic-mike-heat-slideShortly after Magic Mike became a surprise hit, Channing Tatum started talking about making a sequel, and at one point it was even suggested it could have been his directorial debut. However its only now that the movie is ready to move forward, and Tatum won’t be at the helm.

A couple of days ago Joe Manganiello said they we planning to shoot the follow-up this autumn and that more info would be announced very soon. Well now it has, as ThePlaylist reports that Steven Soderbergh’s longtime assistant director, Gregory Jacobs, will direct the movie, and it’ll be getting the slightly risqué title Magic Mike XXL.

Channing Tatum is co-writing the movie alongside Reid Carolin, and will return to play the title character. Soderbergh, who directed the first film, will executive produce.

While it’s almost certain Joe Manganiello will once again co-star, it’s not known who amongst Matthew McConaughey, Alex Pettyfer, Joe Manganiello, Matt Bomer and Olivia Munn might also be back, although it’s believed all are interested in returning.

Gregory Jacobs previously helmed 2004’s Criminal and 2007’s Wind Chill in 2007.

Will Channing Tatum Direct Magic Mike 2?

September 12, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Shortly after Magic Mike became a suprise success at the box office, Channing Tatum began talking about a sequel, and writer Reid Carolin has been charged with coming up with the script, once more collaborating with Tatum on the story. Plus, there’s a Broadway version of the film in the works.

Now we’ve had an update and it appears Tatum is thinking of making Magic Mike 2 his directorial debut. He told the German site Filmstarts (via The Film Stage), that as Steven Soderbergh is supposedly retiring, Magic Mike 2 could be helmed by Soderbergh’s longtime assistant director Gregory Jacobs (Wind Chill, Criminal), but then suggested that he and Carolin might just end up helming the movie themselves. Who knows how serious he is, but it seems a Tatum directed sequel is possible.

However the follow-up is a way off at the moment, with the Broadway adaptation taking priority at the moment for Tatum and Carolin. They do have sequel ideas though, with the actor telling Allocine, “We have a story, and it is really ridiculous and fun. It’s a road movie sort of thing, where a bunch of strippers get back together. It’s more of a broad comedy. I don’t know whether it will happen or not.”
