Comic-Con Posters: Oldboy Banner, Getaway, 300: Rise Of An Empire, The Crow & more

July 19, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

oldboy-comic-con-banner
While most of us can’t get to San Diego for Comic-con, we can still hang around the periphery, enjoying the bits and pieces studios release to tie in with the event. That includes a lot of posters. We’ve now got a quintet of fresh looks at upcoming movie with an Oldboy banner, as well as new posters for 300: Rise Of An Empire, Getaway, Only God Forgives and the reboot of The Crow. You can take a look at all of them below.

Spike Lee’s remake of Oldboy follows  an advertising executive (Josh Brolin) who is abruptly kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement. When he is inexplicably released, he embarks on an obsessive mission to discover who orchestrated his bizarre and torturous punishment, only to find he is still trapped in a web of conspiracy and torment.

The Crow gets a poster from the comic’s creator, James O’Barr, along with the news that after years in development, it should finally start shooting in Ocotber. Luke Evans will play Eric Draven, who dies but comes back as The Crow to avenge the murder of his girlfriend. F. Javier Gutiérrez directs.

Getaway follows former race car driver Brent Magna (Ethan Hawke) is pitted against the clock. Desperately trying to save the life of his kidnapped wife, Brent commandeers a custom Shelby Cobra Mustang, taking it and its unwitting owner (Selena Gomez) on a high-speed race against time, at the command of the mysterious villain holding his wife hostage. It’s out in the US in August and currently scheduled for an early October release in the UK.

In Only God Forgives, Julian (Gosling) lives in exile in Bangkok where he runs a Thai boxing club as a front for the family’s drugs smuggling operation. When Julian’s brother Billy is killed their mother, Jenna (Kristen Scott Thomas), arrives in the city. She wants revenge and forces Julian to find the killer. Julian’s contacts in the criminal underworld lead him directly to The Angel of Vengeance, a retired police officer who knows everything and who is both Judge and Punisher. Jenna demands that Julian kill The Angel of Vengeance, an act that will cost him dearly.

300: Rise Of An Empire sees Sullivan Stapleton as Themistokles, who tries to unite all of Greece in battle against the massive Persian army lead by Xerxes and the cunning Artemisia (Eva Green). It’s out March 2014.

Great New Look At Ryan Gosling In Only God Forgives With A UK Trailer

July 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

They’re certainly laying on the style in this new UK trailer for Only God Forgive, which reunites Ryan Gosling with Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Bangkok. Julian (Ryan Gosling) runs a Thai boxing club as a front for a drugs operation. He has everything he wants for and is respected in the criminal underworld though, deep inside, he feels empty.

‘When Julian’s brother murders a prostitute the police call on retired cop Chang – the Angel of Vengeance (Vithaya Pansringarm). Chang allows the father to kill his daughter’s murderer, then ‘restores order’ by chopping off the man’s right hand. Julian’s mother Jenna (Kristin Scott Thomas) – the head of a powerful criminal organization – arrives in Bangkok to collect her son’s body. She dispatches Julian to find his killers and ‘raise hell’.

‘Increasingly obsessed with the Angel of Vengeance, Julian challenges him to a boxing match, hoping that by defeating him he might find spiritual release… but Chang triumphs. A furious Jenna plots revenge and the stage is set for a bloody journey through betrayal and vengeance towards a final confrontation and the possibility of redemption.’

It reaches UK cinemas on August 2nd, while it’ll be out in the US on July 19th. [Read more…]

Ryan Gosling Gets Slightly Neon For An Only God Forgives Poster

June 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Only-God-Forgives-poster2Only God Forgives slightly divided critics when it debuted at Cannes, with some suggesting it was a truly exceptional film that more than lived up to the idea of Ryan Gosling reuniting with Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn, while others were a little underwhelmed.

Well US audiences will be able to make up their own mind on July 19th, with UK cinemas getting it on August 2nd. And now a new poster has arrived, showing us Gosling looking very red and blue.

The movie is about Julian (Gosling), who lives in exile in Bangkok where he runs a Thai boxing club as a front for his family’s drugs smuggling operation. When Julian’s brother Billy is killed, their mother, Jenna (Kristen Scott Thomas), arrives in the city. She wants revenge and forces Julian to find the killer. Official Cannes Line-up Revealed, With A Bit Of Gay Interest

April 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Cannes-2013-PosterThe official line-up for the 2013 Cannes Film Festival has been revealed, with an interesting set of movies screening from May 15th to 26th. We already knew the festival would open with Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby and that Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring would kick off the Un Certain Regard segment, but now the other movies have been announced.

The main competition includes the Coen Brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis, Takashi Miike’s Shield Of Straw, Alexander Payne’s Nebraska, and Nicolas Winding Refn’s Only God Forgives.

Interestingly Steven Soberbergh’s very gay Liberace biopic Behind The Candelabra, starring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, has been chosen. While Soderbergh is a Cannes veteran, having won the Palme d’Or for Sex, Lies & Videotapes, Behind The Candelabra was made to be shown on American TV, rather than getting a cinema release (although it will be coming to cinemas in other parts of the world), which you might have expected to cause Cannes to ignore it.

Movies from Roman Polanksi, James Gray and gay director Francois Ozon are also in competition, while out of competition there’s J.C. Chandor’s All Is Lost, starring Robert Redford, and Blood Ties by Guillaume Canet.

Funky New Poster For Ryan Gosling’s Only God Forgives

April 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Only-God-Forgives-poster1
Ryan Gosling may have suggested that he’s planning to take a break from acting for a bit, but he’s got The Place Beyond The Pines in cinemas and Only God Forgives, as well as Terrence Malick’s currently untitled movie, coming out before then.

Now a new poster for Only God Forgives has arrived, which you can see above. The movie reunites Gosling with Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn and follow Julian (Gosling), who lives in exile in Bangkok where he runs a Thai boxing club as a front for his family’s drugs smuggling operation. When Julian’s brother Billy is killed, their mother, Jenna (Kristen Scott Thomas), arrives in the city. She wants revenge and forces Julian to find the killer. Only God Forgives Red Band Trailer – Ryan Gosling reunites with Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn

April 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ryan Gosling and Drive director Nicolas Wining Refn have reunited for the upcoming Only God Forgives, which looks like it’s going to be as tense as their previous effort – although there’s less evidence Drive’s gore in this new red band trailer.

Julian (Gosling) lives in exile in Bangkok where he runs a Thai boxing club as a front for the family’s drugs smuggling operation.

It should be in cinemas this summer, with Gosling looking all bashed up.

Only God Forgives Teaser Clip – Ryan Gosling gets punched in the face

January 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Drive got a lot of fans thanks to its andrenaline packed mix of tension and violence, so many will be glad to hear Ryan Gosling has reunited with director Nicolas Winding Refn for Only God Forgives. Most of what we’ve seen on the film so far have been images of Ryan Gosling with a pummelled face, and now a brief teaser has shown up online, which gives us a look at how Gosling gets batters and bruised.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Julian (Gosling) lives in exile in Bangkok where he runs a Thai boxing club as a front for the family’s drugs smuggling operation. When Julian’s brother Billy is killed their mother, Jenna (Scott Thomas), arrives in the city. She wants revenge and forces Julian to find the killer. Julian’s contacts in the criminal underworld lead him directly to The Angel of Vengeance, a retired police officer who knows everything and who is both Judge and Punisher. Jenna demands that Julian kill The Angel of Vengeance, an act that will cost him dearly.’

It looks likely the movie will premiere at Cannes, and hopefully a release will come shortly afterwards.

Ryan Gosling’s Face Gets Bashed In (But Luckily Only In A Promo Image)

November 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Beating Ryan Gosling’s pretty face to a pulp would essentially be an act of blasphemy, but he’s not looking too pretty in this promo image from Only God Forgives. It suggests that after the blood-soaked Drive, Gosling and director Nicolas Winding Refn aren’t going for sugar plums and fairies in their latest collaboration.

The film stars Gosling and Kristin Scott Thomas, with word coming through that it’s likely to be finished by December, ready for release at some point next year.

I’m not sure how Gosling does it, but he’s one of the few people who can make being bloodied and half-blinded look sexy. If it’s half as good as Drive we’re in for a treat.
