Star Trek Into Darkness Warp Speeds To The Top Of The US Box Office

May 20, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

star-trek-into-darkness-imax-posterWhen the summer comes around, all the big action movies head for cinemas, causing pretty much every other movie to run for cover (largely because there aren’t many cinema screens left). As a result, Star Trek Into Darkness was the only new entrant into the US box office top 10, taking $84 million since its opening last Thursday.

That’s roughly in line with what JJ Abrams first Star Trek movie took when it opened in 2009. While it’s a fairly big haul, many are still seeing it as a disappointment, as many had expected to open in the $100 million range. However it’s doing better overseas, so is still likely to end up grossing a fair amount more that the earlier movie overall.

It’s also going to face a challenge keeping its US gross up in the coming weeks, with competition such as Hangover III and Face & Furious 6 heading into cinemas in the next few days.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of May 17th-19th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Star Trek Into Darkness $70.5 $84.0
2 Iron Man 3 $35.1 $337.0
3 The Great Gatsby $23.4 $90.1
4 Pain And Gain $3.1 $46.5
5 The Croods $2.7 $176.7
6 42 $2.7 $88.7
7 Oblivion $2.2 $85.5
8 Mud $2.1 $11.5
9 Tyler Perry Presents Peeples $2.1 $7.8
10 The Big Wedding $1.1 $20.1

Gatsby Is Great But Can’t Beat Iron Man 3 At The US Box Office

May 13, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

great-gatsby-poster2There’s been a fair amount of uncertainty about how well The Great Gatsby would do, with some wondering whether there was room for it in the usually action-heavy summer release schedule. However it’s done far better than many expected, taking $51 million in its first weekend at the US box office.

It’s particularly good news for Baz Luhrman, as his previous highest grossing movie in North America was Moulin Rouge!, which took $57 million. The Great Gatsby should pass that in the next couple of days.

Even with Gatsby’s great start, it couldn’t beat Iron Man 3, which took $72.5 million in it second weekend.

The only other new entry in the top 10 was Tyler Perry Presents Peeples, which took $4.3 million. It’s one of the worst starts of the year for a film opening on more that 2,000 screens.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of May 10th-12th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Iron Man 3 $72.4 $284,8
2 The Great Gatsby $51.1 $51.1
3 Pain And Gain $5.0 $41.6
4 Tyler Perry Presents Peeples $4.8 $4.8
5 42 $4.6 $84.7
6 Oblivion $3.8 $81.6
7 The Croods $3.6 $173.2
8 The Big Wedding $2.5 $18.2
9 Mud $2.3 $8.3

Iron Man 3 Has The Second Best US Box Office Opening Ever

May 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Iron-Man-3-Fan-Edition-posterThe money men at Disney/Marvel will be rubbing their hands in glee this morning, as if they were worried about the hundreds of millions they’ve already poured into the post-Avengers movies, Iron Man 3 has resolutely proved audiences are keen to continue watching the superhero adventures.

While Iron Man 3 couldn’t beat The Avengers $204 million US opening, it still managed the second biggest first weekend ever at the US box office with $175 million. That’s massively ahead of Iron Man 2’s $128 million. Add in an non-US total that’s already topped $500 million, and the film is well on its way to a billion dollar worldwide gross.

Iron Man 3 was the only brand new movie in the top 10, although the Matthew McConaughey starrer Mud did make its first entry, jumping from number 11 to number 7 thanks to an increased screen count.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of May 3rd-5th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Iron Man 3 $175.3 $175.3
2 Pain And Gain $7.6 $33.9
3 42 $6.2 $78.3
4 Oblivion $5.7 $74.9
5 The Croods $4.2 $168.7
6 The Big Wedding $3.8 $14.2
7 Mud $2.1 $5.1

Pain And Gain Tops The US Box Office, With Iron Man 3 Taking A Gargantuan Haul Internationally

April 29, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

pain-and-gain-poster3Michael Bay has proved he can still pull in the punters away from massive robots, as his Dwayne Johnson and Mark Wahlberg starrer, Pain And Gain, topped the US box office with $20 million in its first weekend. Although that’s a lot less than Bay’s Transformers movies opened to, that’s only to be expected from an R-rated thriller with a dash of comedy. And as it only cost $26 million to make, it’s likely headed for a healthy profit.

There was less cheer for The Big Wedding, which opened to a rather meagre $7.5 million, despite a cast including Robert De Niro, Susan Sarandon, Katherine Heigl, Diane Keaton, Robin Williams and Amanda Seyfried. While Hollywood still seems to think wedding comedies are a surefire winner, Big Wedding has followed a trend of diminishing returns for this seemingly never-ending subgenre.

Those were the only new movies in the top 10, as the Matthew McConaughey drama Mud landed at number 11 on its opening in limited release. However the really big news took place outside the US, where the international opening of Iron Man 3 took a truly massive $195 million.

The film opened in 79% of territories outside North America, and if Disney had any worries about the poster-Avengers Marvel world, they’ll have been laid to rest. $195 million is $10 million ahead of what Avengers took in those territories in its first three days. It had the biggest opening ever in Argentina, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Vietnam, Taiwan, Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore It’s one of the biggest international opening ever and certainly suggests the film is going to be one of this year’s biggest hitters

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of April 26th-28th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Pain And Gain $20.0 $20.0
2 Oblivion $17.4 $64.7
3 42 $10.7 $69.0
4 The Big Wedding $7.5 $7.5
5 The Croods $6.6 $163.0
6 GI Joe: Retaliation $3.6 $116.3
7 Scary Movie 5 $3.4 $27.4

New Posters For The Great Gatsby, This Is The End and Pain & Gain

April 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

great-gatsby-poster2
New posters have shown up online for The Great Gatsy, This Is The End and Pain & Gain, which you can see above and below. The Gatsby poster comes just a few hours before we’ve been promised a new trailer for the Baz Luhrmann’s take on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel, so look out for that.

Michael Bay’s Pain & Gain sees Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson as two Florida bodybuilder who get caught up in a kidnapping that spirals way out of hand. This Is The End, meanwhile, sees the likes of James Franco, Danny McBride and Jonah Hill playing versions of themselves as they deal with the end of the world in LA.

Manic New Red Band Pain And Gain Trailer Hits

March 27, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Michael Bay promised Pain & Gain would be something a little different from what we normally expect from him. However as this trailer shows, it’s still somewhat familiar, with bright, saturated colours and a love of slow-mo, as well as showing off women in skimpy outfits.

Indeed it rather harks back to Bad Boys, although without as many explosions (as the trailer shows, there are indeed things exploding, but seeing as most Bay movies are a two hour fireworks display, this is comparatively restrained).

The action comedy stars Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson and Anthony Mackie, telling the true story of three personal trainers in 1990s Miami who, in pursuit of the American Dream, get caught up in a criminal enterprise that goes horribly wrong. It hits US cinemas on April 26th, and the UK on May 3rd.

Pain & Gain Trailer – Michael Bay gets less explosive and into kidnapping

December 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Michael Bay only agreed to make Transformers 4 if he could direct his long-gestating movie, Pain & Gain first. Now that movie is incoming, and the first trailer has arrived. Although it looks less explosion filled than most of Bay’s film, it’s still got that slightly hyper-real look he’s known for – as well as a tendency to linger on scantily clad women.

The film is based based on a true story, and sees Mark Wahlberg & Dwayne Johnson as a pair of Florida bodybuilders who get caught in the middle of an extortion and kidnapping scheme. They plan to take a rich man hostage, but things don’t exactly go to plan. Ed Harris, Rebel Wilson, Anthony Mackie, Ken Jeong and Tony Shalhoub also star.

It’s due out in the UK May 2013.

Mark Wahlberg & Dwayne Johnson Get Patriotic In Pain & Gain Poster

December 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Michael Bay is leaving behind giant special effects and explosions for Pain & Gain, his new thriller starring Dwayne Johnson & Mark Wahlberg. However it appears the director still wants a bit of a ‘go USA’ backdrop, literally, as this new poster sees his stars (but not stripes) in front of an American flag.

Poster For Michael Bay’s Pain & Gain Debuts

September 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Yesterday Paramount set a US release date of April 26th, 2013 for Michael Bay’s Pain & Gain, the ‘small’ movie they had to promise he could make to get him to sign on for Transformers 4. Now a poster has been released to back it up.

Based on a true story, Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson star as two bodybuilders who get caught up in a bizarre scheme that involves extortion, kidnapping, and murder in Miami Beach.

Yolanthe Cabau Joins Michael Bay’s Pain & Gain

April 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Is Michael Bay’s tendency to cast inexperienced female actresses allowing young people a chance, or pure sexism assuming that a pretty face is more important than genuine talent?

I get the feeling the latter is closer to the truth, although in the case of the upcoming Pain & Gain, we’ll have to wait and see of Yolanthe Cabau is as good an actress as she is a clothes horse (her only real acting experience is in a Dutch soap opera).

The dark comedy is based on a true story about a pair of bodybuilders in Florida, who get caught up in an extortion ring and a kidnapping scheme that goes terribly wrong. Cabau actress will play the role of Barbara, the girlfriend of Mark Wahlberg’s character. Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson are playing the body builders.

Pain & Gain recently started shooting and will be in cinemas next year.
