San Andreas (Blu-ray Review)

October 11, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Carla Gugino, Alexandra Daddario, Hugo Johnstone-Burt, Paul Giamatti
Director: Brad Peyton
Running Time: 114 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: October 12th 2015 (UK)

If you’d hoped that having Lost’s Carlton Cuse writing the screenplay would result in San Andreas being a more cerebral form of disaster movie, you should realise he was also an executive producer on Nash Bridges, so he is not averse to more straightforward entertainment. Indeed, it’s almost like he watched every Roland Emmerich movies – from 2012 and The Day After Tomorrow to Independence Day and Godzilla – and then used that as his template, but cut out anything too intelligent.

There is little to surprise here, although it certainly delivers on the large sale mayhem.

Dwayne Johnson is Los Angeles helicopter rescue pilot Ray, who’s dealing with the collapse of his marriage following the death of one of his children. However, he’s soon going to have more than that to worry about (actually, that’s not true as that’s all he cares about), when earthquakes start devastating California, starting at the Hoover Dam and then working its way up to San Francisco. And wouldn’t you know it, Ray’s daughter is in San Francisco, and so he sets off to rescue her, dodging city destroying shaking, tsunamis and general building destroying catastrophe along the way, as the San Andreas fault splits apart, resulting in the biggest quakes ever known. Final San Andreas Trailer Arrives – Dwayne Johnson takes on an earthquake

May 5, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

san-andreas-slide1After the terrible Earthquake in Nepal, it was quickly revealed that Warner Bros. was making changes to its marketing for the upcoming San Andreas, and that may be present here, as this new trailer lays on the pathos and horror of the situation far more than earlier promos, which invited us to enjoy the orgy of destruction.

It’ll be interesting to see which of these tones is closet to the actual movie.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘After the infamous San Andreas Fault finally gives, triggering a magnitude 9 earthquake in California, a search and rescue helicopter pilot (Dwayne Johnson) and his estranged wife make their way together from Los Angeles to San Francisco to save their only daughter. But their treacherous journey north is only the beginning. And when they think the worst may be over…it’s just getting started.’

The movie will his UK cinemas May 28th. [Read more…]

New San Andreas Trailer – Plus a poster for the Dwayne Johnson disaster movie

March 10, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

san-andreas-posterNot content with the motor mayhem of Fast & Furious 7, Dwayne Johnson has decided he wants to destroy the entire West Coast of America this year! Well, okay, nature (and a whole lot of CGI) will be doing the destroying, but Dwayne is along for the rise.

And to prove this will be as over the top as any modern disaster flick is bound to be, a new trailer and poster has arrived.

‘But their treacherous journey north is only the beginning. And when they think the worst may be over…it’s just getting started.

‘The action thriller “San Andreas,” from New Line Cinema and Village Roadshow Pictures, reunites Dwayne Johnson with director Brad Peyton and producer Beau Flynn, following their collaboration on the global hit “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.”

‘The film also stars Carla Gugino (“Night at the Museum,” TV’s “Entourage”), Alexandra Daddario (“Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters,” TV’s “True Detective”), Ioan Gruffudd (“Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer”), Archie Panjabi (TV’s “The Good Wife”), Hugo Johnstone-Burt (Australian TV’s “Home and Away”), Art Parkinson (TV’s “Game of Thrones”) and Oscar nominee Paul Giamatti (“Cinderella Man”).’

It’ll be in cinemas this summer. [Read more…]

San Andreas Trailer – The Big One is coming (and we don’t just mean Dwayne Johnson)

December 9, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

san-andreas-slideIt’s surprising that it’s taken this long for Hollywood to make a massive 3D earthquake movie, but 2015 will see one in the form of San Andreas. And by the looks of it, it’s out to prove Roland Emmerich (Day After Tomorrow, 2012) isn’t the only person who can show disaster on a ridiculously epic scale.

The main human stuck in the middle of this tectonic Armageddon is Dwayne Johnson, although the trailer knows the stars of the show here are the building collapsing, the earth shaking and the dams bursting. It’s fair to say that the movie believes that when a huge quake hits LA, the city is completely buggered (although oddly most of the film was shot in Australia).

Kylie Minogue Heads To San Andreas Alongside Dwayne Johnson

June 11, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Kylie-MinogueKylie Minogue may have started out as an actress, but she doesn’t book that many gigs in front of the camera nowadays. However now THR reports that she’s joining Dwayne Johnson in San Andreas.

Johnson will play a man who travels across California to rescue his estranged daughter after a massive earthquake strikes. It’s not known exactly who the Aussie pop star will play, but she’ll star alongside Carla Gugino, Alexandra Daddario, Colton Haynes and Art Parkinson.

The project has been in development at New Line Cinema since 2011, when Allan Loeb (The Switch) signed on to rewrite the original script by Andre Fabrizio and Jeremy Passmore (Special). Lost’s Carlton Cuse signed on to rewrite the script in 2012, although the most recent draft was written by Chad Hayes and Carey Hayes (The Conjuring).

Brad Peyton is directing, with the shoot currently happening in Australia. It’s due out summer 2015.
