Star Trek Into Darkness Superbowl Spot – Fresh look at JJ Abrams’ much anticipated sequel

February 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

What we’ve seen of Star Trek Into Darkness so far suggests a more Earth-based tale than we’re used to, and that’s certainly true of this Superbowl spot, although it’s tough to tell whether that’s because we’re just being shown our world coming under destruction or if there really will be less trekking to stars in this adventure.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness. When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

‘With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.’

The film hits cinemas May 17th, 2013, with Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg and Anton Yelchin all returning, and Benedict Cumberbatch as the villainous John Harrison (who many think is actually Khan).

Star Trek Into Darkness Teaser Trailer – Get a better look at Kirk and co.

December 18, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last week we got an announcement teaser trailer for Star Trek Into Darkness, and now comes a longer version, which offers more footage and further hints towards links to Wrath Of Khan – including Benedict Cumberbatch’s dialogue and the hand touching at the end – although whether than means Cumberbatch’s ‘John Harrison’ is really Khan still isn’t known.

Eagle-eyed viewers also spotted links to a viral site, AreYouThe1701.com. At the moment if you click on the link it simply allows you to sign up with your e-mail address and birthdate, and promises to ‘tell you when the search begins’. Hopefully more will be revealed soon.

Does New Star Trek Image Reveals Benedict Cumberbatch’s Character?

December 11, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There’s been a lot of speculation about who Benedict Cumberbatch would be playing in Star Trek Into Darkness, with many suggesting he’ll be a classic Trek villain. Director JJ Abrams meanwhile seems to have been having a lot of fun not telling us. However now the new image above has arrived, which gives us a name for the character in its caption.

So who is it? Well, the caption simply says, ‘(Left to right) Zachary Quinto is Spock, Benedict Cumberbatch is John Harrison and Chris Pine is Kirk in STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS from Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions.’

So who is John Harrison? Well, the recently official synopsis describes him as a ‘one man weapon of mass destruction’, but there are still those who believe John Harrison is either a ruse or pseudonym, and that this baddie is actually the legendary Khan. Knowing Abrams, he’s not going to say anything about this until after the film is release, but there is a fair amount of evidence that Khan will be involved, although nothing definitive.

The film hits cinemas May 17th 2013. Here’s the synopsis again in case you missed it, ‘When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. Star Trek Into Darkness Announcement Teaser Trailer – Has the villain been revealed?

December 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Star Trek fans prepare to get excited, as your first look at the upcoming Star Trek Into Darkness is here, with a brief announcement trailer. You can watch that above, along with a Japanese version below, which slightly different footage.

From the trailer we discover that Benedict Cumberbatch is one angry man, wanting plenty of revenge and causing all sorts of trouble. However we still don’t have a name for his character, which has led to plenty of speculation that he’ll be a JJ Abrams version of one of the classic Trek baddies. There are some people already suggesting that the Japanese version, with its 15 seconds of extra footage, gives a major hint as to exactly which villain it will be, [SPOILER ALERT] due to a shot of Kirk and Spock touching through a pane of glass, which is reminiscent of Star Trek II. And that could mean that as long speculated, Cumberbatch is Khan Noonien Singh. That’s still not confirmed but it’s seeming increasingly likely. [SPOILERS END]

Star Trek Into Darkness Teaser Poster Online

December 3, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We’ve been promised the first Star Trek Into Darkness trailer will premiere alongside The Hobbit, but before then the teaser poster has arrived (Click on it for a larger version). The synopsis that showed up last week promised the villain would be a ‘one man weapon of mass destruction’, and this poster certainly backs that up, showing Benedict Cumberbatch standing in some fiery wreckage, presumably after causing some sort of massive explosion.

However we don’t know what the explosion might be, as this is JJ Abrams, and so there’s still major secrecy going on. It’s not a particularly Star Trek-y image either, suggesting they may be trying to lure in new fans with this one.

Here’s the synopsis again, in case you missed it last week: ‘In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness. When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

Star Trek Into Darkness Official Synopsis Arrives

November 27, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

JJ Abrams is a big fan of secrecy, and so it’s often difficult to get any information about projects he’s working on. With some, such as Cloverfield, he’s even tried to maintain secrecy after the film was released. However some info always slips out, and with a franchise as big as Star Trek, it’s little surprise the studio wants to give out at least a little info.

Now the official synopsis has arrived (via The Film Stage), which may not be a point-by-point breakdown, but certainly let’s us now the broad strokes. It says, ‘In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J.

It’s slightly awkwardly worded, seemingly because they’re trying to give us info while not revealing anything about the villain themselves. All we know is they’re being played by Benedict Cumberbatch.

The film hits cinemas May 17th, 2013, with Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg and Anton Yelchin all returning.

First Star Trek Into Darkness Footage Debuts – Blink and you’ll miss it (literally)

October 5, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It may be a bit ridiculous, but it’s still oddly exicting. The first footage from Star Trek Into Darkness has arrived, but before you wet yourself too much, it’s only three frames long! JJ Abrams swung by Conan O’Brien’s show to unveil the footage, which gives us a very brief look at Spock inside a volcano wearing a ‘crazy suit’. We’re sure fanboys will be trying to unravel the entire plot from these frames, but to be honest I doubt they tell us all that much. It’s still good to see these frames though.

Has Star Trek 2 Found A Title?

September 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The main way for fans to find out early what a movie is going to be called is to keep an eye on domain name registrations. A studio has to buy the domains before they announce the title (to stop the inevitable cyber-squatters), but there’s no way to keep those registrations completely secret.

Now fans think they may have found the title of Star Trek 2, as MarkMonitor, a popular domain registry – the same registry in fact that secured the title for Paramount Pictures’ G.I. Joe Retaliation – has confirmed that both www.startrekintodarkness.com and www.startrekintodarknessmovie have been registered as Internet website domains.

This, of course, has led to the speculation that the new title of Star Trek 2 is now Star Trek Into Darkness. While most sites have been reporting it without a colon, there’s no real reason to suppose it won’t be Star Trek: Into Darkness, which would certainly be less clunky.

At this time, the title has been neither confirmed nor denied by the studio, but with the movie out next year, an official announcement and title treatment must be imminent. (Source: ComingSoon)

Has Karl Urban Revealed Star Trek 2’s Villain?

July 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Abrams love to keep things secret, including who the villain is in Star Trek 2. When several Hispanic actors were considered, most of the speculation centred around it being Khan. When Benedict Cumberbatch was eventually cast, who the villain would be remained a mystery, with Khan still the favoured option.

Now Karl Urban, who plays Bones in Star Trek 2, may have inadvertently revealed the baddie’s identity, while promoting his upcoming sci-fi reboot Dredd. When talking about Cumberbatch to SFX, Urban said, “He’s awesome, he’s a great addition, and I think his Gary Mitchell is going to be exemplary.”

Although not familiar to many people, Gary Mitchell is a character from the original TV series, originally appearing in ‘Where No Man Has Gone Before,’ an episode crafted as the second pilot for the show and aired as the third episode. Mitchell is an old friend of Kirk’s who is granted powerful telepathic and telekinetic powers. Things don’t end well, with Mitchell and Kirk engaging in a deadly showdown.

There’s still a bit of mystery as writer/producer Roberto Orci has previously said Mitchell is definitely not in the movie. Is Urban engaged in more misdirection? Will things he confirmed at Comic-Con? We’ll have to wait and find out.

Benedict Cumberbatch Playing Star Trek 2 Villain

January 5, 2012 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

While it’s still sometimes difficult to accept there really is a person called Benedict Cumberbatch (it sounds too much like the villain from an Edwardian novel), he’s doing very well for himself thanks to TV’s Sherlock. He’s also bagged a role in the upcoming War Horse and The Hobbit and now his star is set to rise into the stratosphere as he’s been cast as the villain in Star Trek 2, according to Variety.

He’s not the only new Brit onboard, as Noel Clarke is also joining the movie. It isn’t known precisely what role either will play (as is always the way with JJ Abrams films), although it’s said Clarke will be a family man with a wife and young daughter, while Cumberbatch is the main villain.

We still don’t know who that villain will be, although rumours still swirl that it’ll be legendary bad guy Khan (which seems to be at least paritally based on the fact previous actors in the frame for the part, such as Benicio Del Toro and Edgar Ramirez, are hispanic).
