Gravity Tops The US Box Office For A Third Week, While Fifth Estate Tanks Badly

October 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

gravity-preview-pic1Gravity has continued its impressive box office run, topping the US box office for a third week with $31 million, once more dropping less than 30% from the previous weekend (most films fall around 40-60% each week). It’s made $170 million in North America so far and is expected to gross another $100 million before the end of its run.

It certainly saw off the newcomers. The remake of Carrie was the best new opener with $17 million, which means that while it should still be profitable as it didn’t cost too much to make, it’s on the low end for recent horror releases, which is slightly surprising with Halloween not far away.

Escape Plan came fifth with $9.8 million, showing once more that after his time as Californian Governor, Armie isn’t the box office name he used to be, even if he teams up with Sylvester Stallone – something that in the 80s fans would have died for.

The only other new opener in the top 10 was the Wikileaks drama, The Fifth Estate, which took a dismal $1.7 million. It was a bit of a disaster, as it’s the lowest opening in DreamWorks history, and the worst start for a movie opening at over 1,500 cinemas this year. With bad reviews and mediocre audience reaction, it’s unlikely to do much better in the coming weeks.

Outside the top 10, 12 Years A Slave did well, taking $960,000 on just 19 screens. That’s an incredibly impressive $50,000 per screen, suggesting it’ll do extremely well as it expands nationwide in the coming weeks.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Gravity $31.0 $170.5
2 Captain Phillips $17.3 $53.3
3 Carrie $17.0 $17.0
4 Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2 $10.1 $93.1
5 Escape Plan $9.8 $9.8
6 Prisoners $2.0 $57.2
7 Enough Said $1.8 $10.7
8 The Fifth Estate $1.7 $1.7
9 Runner Runner $1.6 $17.5
10 Insidious Chapter 2 $1.5 $80.9

The Fifth Estate Poster & Photos Featuring Benedict Cumberbatch & Daniel Bruhl Debut

August 20, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

fifth-estate-poster1
Even though no one’s seen The Fifth Estate yet (it debuts at TIFF in a few weeks), there are already fans of Wikileaks’ Julian Assange are already denouncing it, largely because it’s based on a book by Daniel Domscheit-Berg, a former right-hand man to Assange who later turned against the man and his methods.

Now a poster and some new images from the film have arrived, which you can see above and below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Triggering our age of high-stakes secrecy, explosive news leaks and the trafficking of classified information, WikiLeaks forever changed the game. Now, in a dramatic thriller based on real events, THE FIFTH ESTATE reveals the quest to expose the deceptions and corruptions of power that turned an Internet upstart into the 21st century’s most fiercely debated organization.

‘The story begins as WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and his colleague Daniel Domscheit-Berg (Daniel Brühl) team up to become underground watchdogs of the privileged and powerful. On a shoestring, they create a platform that allows whistleblowers to anonymously leak covert data, shining a light on the dark recesses of government secrets and corporate crimes.

‘Soon, they are breaking more hard news than the world’s most legendary media organizations combined. But when Assange and Berg gain access to the biggest trove of confidential intelligence documents in U.S. history, they battle each other and a defining question of our time: what are the costs of keeping secrets in a free society—and what are the costs of exposing them?”

‘The Fifth Estate is presented by DreamWorks Pictures and Reliance Entertainment in association with Participant Media and is produced by Steve Golin and Michael Sugar, with Bill Condon directing. The screenplay is by Josh Singer, based on the book “Inside WikiLeaks” by Daniel Domscheit-Berg and the Guardian book “WikiLeaks” by David Leigh and Luke Harding. The film will be released in U.S. theaters on October 18, 2013.’

The Fifth Estate Trailer – Benedict Cumberbatch does his best Julian Assange

July 17, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Julian Assange is certainly a figure who divides people into staunch camps. Some see him as a hero whose Wikileaks has fought for government transparency, while others view him as a villain who’s put soldier’s lives at risk and made life easier for terrorists.

But whatever side you’re on, Assange himself is an interesting if rather strange figure (like many whistleblowers, irrespective of whether he’s right or wrong, he often comes across as a bit of a dick). Now Benedict Cumberbatch is taking him on in The Fifth Estate, which has already caused controversy with some deciding it’s going to be a hatchet job and going on the offensive, while others have attacked it in case it’s an apologia for a man they see as a traitor.

We can get our first feel for the film now that a trailer has been released.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Triggering our age of high-stakes secrecy, explosive news leaks and the trafficking of classified information, WikiLeaks forever changed the game. First Pic From The Fifth Estate With Bendict Cumberbatch As Julian Assange

January 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

fifth-estate-pic1The pro-Julian Assange lobby is already moving against The Fifth Estate, afraid the movie will be a hatchet job suggesting the Wikileaks founder is a power-mad, paranoid menace. We don’t know yet exactly what tone the movie will take, although as its based on a book by Daniel Domscheit-Berg, who was once Assange’s right hand man but had a major ideological falling out with Julian, it’s probably not going to be 100% pro-Wikileaks.

Now the first image from The Fifth Estate, featuring Benedict Cumberbatch as Julian Assange and Daniel Brühl as Daniel Domscheit-Berg, has arrived. Dreamworks has also set a November 15th, 2013 US release date (it should hit the UK around the same time), suggesting the studio is hoping for some Oscar love.

The movie follows Daniel Domscheit-Berg (Brühl), an early supporter and eventual colleague of Julian Assange (Cumberbatch), tracing the heady, early days of WikiLeaks, culminating in a series of controversial and history changing information leaks. The website’s overnight success brought instant fame to its principal architects and transformed the flow of information to news media and the world at large.

Director Bill Condon commented, “It may be decades before we understand the full impact of WikiLeaks and how it’s revolutionized the spread of information. So this film won’t claim any long view authority on its subject, or attempt any final judgment. We want to explore the complexities and challenges of transparency in the information age and, we hope, enliven and enrich the conversations WikiLeaks has already provoked.”
