Daniel Bruhl Joins Captain America: Civil War (& Possibly Doctor Strange) In A Villainous Role

November 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Daniel-BruhlIt’s always busy in the world of Marvel, and with Avengers 2 and Ant Man wrapped and now in post-production, they’re already hard at work on putting the pieces together for Captain America: Civil War. Now another has slotted into place with the company revealing they’ve added Daniel Bruhl (Rush, Inglourious Basterds).

There’s no news on exactly who he’ll play, although most sources suggest he’s take on a villainous role in the movie – even with that, there’s disagreement over whether he’ll be the main villain or not.

Some have also linked to announcement to the related rumour that the Doctor Strange villain will be introduced in Civil War, and that this is the role Bruhl has signed on to play. At the moment this seems like the most likely scenario.

Anthony and Joe Russo return to direct, with a May 6th, 2016 release set.

Emma Watson & Daniel Bruhl Head For Tense Chilean Thriller Colonia

September 30, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

emma watsonEmma Watson and Daniel Bruhl have found themselves new roles as they’re teaming up for the period thriller Colonia, which is set during a Chilean military coup in 1973, according to THR.

Bruhl will play the German Daniel, who gets arrested by dictator Augusto Pinochet’s secret police and is taken to a secret place with his friends and family not knowing what has happened to his. His lover Lena (Watson) tracks him down to a sealed-off area in the south of Chile, known as Colonia Digignad.

Officially it’s a charitable mission run by a preacher, but that’s just a sinister front for what is in reality a torture and detention centre from which few people ever leave.

Florian Gallenberger direct the movie, which has already started filming.

April 12, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Set in Hamburg, Germany, the plot is about a mysterious man who is near death and looking to retrieve his late father’s fortune. Philip Seymour Hoffman plays a German spy chief who tries to determine the mystery man’s identity. Rachel McAdams, Willem Dafoe, Daniel Bruhl and Robin Wright co-star.

Ryan Reynolds & Helen Mirren Up For Nazi Art Tale Woman in Gold

April 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Ryan-ReynoldsRyan Reynolds is best known for comedy and action roles, but he’s actually had more dramatic parts than you might have realised. Now he’s got a part that will really test his acting chops as Deadline reports Reynolds has joined The Woman in Gold, alongside Helen Mirren and Daniel Bruhl.

Mirren will play Maria Altmann, a real-life Jewish WWII survivor who took action against the Austrian government to retrieve several Gustav Klimt paintings she believed had been looted from her family. The title refers to the most famous of those paintings.

Ryan Reynolds is set be her attorney, with Daniel Bruhl as the lawyer arguing the other side of the case.

My Week with Marilyn’s Simon Curtis is directing from a script by Alexi Kaye Campbell. Film is slated to begin this May.

Rush (Blu-ray)

January 26, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Daniel Bruhl, Olivia Wilde, Alexandra Maria Lara, Pierfrancesco Favino
Director: Ron Howard
Running Time: 122 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: January 27th 2014

There were quite a few people who were expecting Rush to get a few Oscar nominations, but in the end it was shut out. It’s a shame as it’s a damn fine movie and should have got some kudos, even if it was only in the production design and cinematography departments, as it does such a great job of recreating 1970s Formula 1 racing.

The film tells the true story of the intense rivalry between the British James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) and Austria’s Niki Lauda (Daniel Bruhl). They first meet in Formula 3, where it’s clear they are very different people. Hunt is a playboy whose life is about sex, drugs, partying and being everyone’s friend.  Lauda meanwhile is far more serious, seeing racing as being about business. He spends his time learning the mechanics of the cars, as well as showing off an arrogant streak that ensures none of the other drivers like him that much. [Read more…]

Kate Beckinsale Will Have The Face of an Angel In A Film About Amanda Knox

October 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Kate-BeckinsaleKate Beckinsale has signed up for The Face of an Angel, Michael Winterbottom’s upcoming drama about the trial of Amanda Knox. She joins the already cast Daniel Brühl and Cara Delevingne, according to Deadline.

The film revolves around the events surrounding Amanda Knox, a young an American woman living in Italy. She became involved in the November 2007 murder of her British roommate, Meredith Kercher. The victim was sexually assaulted, brutalised and then killed. Knox ended up charged with her killing. It appears Beckinsale will be a journalist who follows the case (based on Daily Beast senior writer Barbie Latza Nadeau, on whose book the film is based), and discovers how the Knox family’s heavy-handed efforts to control media coverage distorted the facts.

Interestingly, a while ago Colin Firth was attached to play the journalist – although at the point, the character was of course going to be a man. Delevingne is playing Knox (at one point Winterbottom wasn’t going to include Knox as a character in the movie at all, instead concentrating on the hoopla surrounding the case, so it may not be that be a role) with Daniel Brühl as a documentary filmmaker.

The Fifth Estate Poster & Photos Featuring Benedict Cumberbatch & Daniel Bruhl Debut

August 20, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

fifth-estate-poster1
Even though no one’s seen The Fifth Estate yet (it debuts at TIFF in a few weeks), there are already fans of Wikileaks’ Julian Assange are already denouncing it, largely because it’s based on a book by Daniel Domscheit-Berg, a former right-hand man to Assange who later turned against the man and his methods.

Now a poster and some new images from the film have arrived, which you can see above and below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Triggering our age of high-stakes secrecy, explosive news leaks and the trafficking of classified information, WikiLeaks forever changed the game. Now, in a dramatic thriller based on real events, THE FIFTH ESTATE reveals the quest to expose the deceptions and corruptions of power that turned an Internet upstart into the 21st century’s most fiercely debated organization.

‘The story begins as WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and his colleague Daniel Domscheit-Berg (Daniel Brühl) team up to become underground watchdogs of the privileged and powerful. On a shoestring, they create a platform that allows whistleblowers to anonymously leak covert data, shining a light on the dark recesses of government secrets and corporate crimes.

‘Soon, they are breaking more hard news than the world’s most legendary media organizations combined. But when Assange and Berg gain access to the biggest trove of confidential intelligence documents in U.S. history, they battle each other and a defining question of our time: what are the costs of keeping secrets in a free society—and what are the costs of exposing them?”

‘The Fifth Estate is presented by DreamWorks Pictures and Reliance Entertainment in association with Participant Media and is produced by Steve Golin and Michael Sugar, with Bill Condon directing. The screenplay is by Josh Singer, based on the book “Inside WikiLeaks” by Daniel Domscheit-Berg and the Guardian book “WikiLeaks” by David Leigh and Luke Harding. The film will be released in U.S. theaters on October 18, 2013.’

New Posters For Saving Mr. Banks, Rush and Mr. Peabody & Sherman

July 24, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

saving-mr-banks-poster1
Some rather cool new posters have emerged, including the very first for Disney’s Saving Mr. Banks, along with pics for DreamWorks Animation’s Mr. Peabody & Sherman and the F1 drama Rush.

Here’s the synopsis for Saving Mr Banks: ‘When Walt Disney’s daughters begged him to make a movie of their favorite book, P.L. Travers’ “Mary Poppins,” he made them a promise—one that he didn’t realize would take 20 years to keep. In his quest to obtain the rights, Walt comes up against a curmudgeonly, uncompromising writer who has absolutely no intention of letting her beloved magical nanny get mauled by the Hollywood machine. But, as the books stop selling and money grows short, Travers reluctantly agrees to go to Los Angeles to hear Disney’s plans for the adaptation.

‘For those two short weeks in 1961, Walt Disney pulls out all the stops. Armed with imaginative storyboards and chirpy songs from the talented Sherman brothers, Walt launches an all-out onslaught on P.L. Travers, but the prickly author doesn’t budge. He soon begins to watch helplessly as Travers becomes increasingly immovable and the rights begin to move further away from his grasp.

‘It is only when he reaches into his own childhood that Walt discovers the truth about the ghosts that haunt her, and together they set Mary Poppins free to ultimately make one of the most endearing films in cinematic history.’ It’s due out in December.

Rush is set in the 1970s, with Chris Hemsworth playing James Hunt with Danie Bruhl as fellow Formula 1 driver Niki Lauda. Hunt was a dashing playboy with a wild social life, whose exploits off the track filled more column inches than what he did while racing. Lauda meanwhile was a quieter figure, but still an amazing and driven racer. Their rivalry became legendary. Ron Howard directs. It’ll be out in September.

Mr. Peabody & Sherman is based on the classic 1950s animated series, about a genius canine ,Mr. Peabody, and his adopted human son Sherman, who spring into action when Sherman uses their time machine without permission and moments in history begin to be changed. It’s due out March 2014.

New Rush Trailer – More F1 action with Chris Hemsworth & Daniel Bruhl

July 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There haven’t been that many movies about F1, partly because it’s not that popular in the US and so the rather myopic people in Hollywood don’t see it as a good box office bet.  They’ll make Nascar movies, despite the fact 90% of the world’s population knows nothing about that, but generally ignore the biggest motorsport competition in the world.

However Rush is bucking that trend, with Ron Howard directing and Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Bruhl set to star. Now we can get a fresh look at the film with a new trailer.

Set in the 1970s, Hemsworth plays James Hunt with Bruhl as Niki Lauda. Hunt was a dashing playboy with a wild social life, whose exploits off the track filled more column inches than what he did while racing. Lauda meanwhile was a quieter figure, but still an amazing and driven racer. Their rivalry became legendary.

Olivia Wilde, Natalie Dormer and Alexandra Maria Lara also star, with the film set for release in September. [Read more…]
