Kate Beckinsale Will Have The Face of an Angel In A Film About Amanda Knox

October 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Kate-BeckinsaleKate Beckinsale has signed up for The Face of an Angel, Michael Winterbottom’s upcoming drama about the trial of Amanda Knox. She joins the already cast Daniel Brühl and Cara Delevingne, according to Deadline.

The film revolves around the events surrounding Amanda Knox, a young an American woman living in Italy. She became involved in the November 2007 murder of her British roommate, Meredith Kercher. The victim was sexually assaulted, brutalised and then killed. Knox ended up charged with her killing. It appears Beckinsale will be a journalist who follows the case (based on Daily Beast senior writer Barbie Latza Nadeau, on whose book the film is based), and discovers how the Knox family’s heavy-handed efforts to control media coverage distorted the facts.

Interestingly, a while ago Colin Firth was attached to play the journalist – although at the point, the character was of course going to be a man. Delevingne is playing Knox (at one point Winterbottom wasn’t going to include Knox as a character in the movie at all, instead concentrating on the hoopla surrounding the case, so it may not be that be a role) with Daniel Brühl as a documentary filmmaker.

The Look Of Love Trailer – Steve Coogan turns porn baron

March 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Look Of Love is set to take us into the world of British porn and the world of Paul Raymond, famed for his stable of blue magazines and for the Raymond Revue Bar in London’s Soho (and now for owning legit magazines and newspapers).

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From Steve Coogan and director Michael Winterbottom, the team behind 24 Hour Party People, Cock and Bull Story and The Trip, comes the fast, funny and outrageously true story of Paul Raymond, the controversial entrepreneur and property baron who established the Raymond Revue Bar and went on to become Britain’s richest man. With a screenplay by Matt Greenhalgh (Control), The Look of Love co-stars Anna Friel, Imogen Poots and Tamsin Egerton as the women in Raymond’s life, alongside a great roster of British comic talent including Chris Addison, David Walliams, Simon Bird and Matt Lucas.

‘After starting his show business career as a mind-reader in a cabaret act, Paul Raymond went on to become Britain’s richest man and a modern King Midas. With an entrepreneurial eye and a realisation that sex sells, he began building his empire of gentleman’s clubs, porn magazines and nude theatre – provoking outrage and titillation in equal measure.

‘Raymond’s personal life was as colourful as his revue shows. His marriage to Jean, a nude dancer and choreographer, ended in a difficult divorce when he met Fiona – a glamour model who became the famous pin-up star of his magazines and shows. His daughter Debbie was the true love of his life, his business partner and heir to his empire – until her tragic and untimely death aged 36. Three weeks later Raymond was named Britain’s richest man and his fortune put at 1.5billion.’

It’s due out in the UK on April 26th. [Read more…]

Trishna (Cinema)

March 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Freida Pinto, Riz Ahmed, Roshan Seth, Kalki Koechlin
Director: Michael Winterbottom
Running Time: 113 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: March 9th, 2012

There have been various themes running through the incredibly eclectic films of Michael Winterbottom. He’s shown a deep interest in music (24 Hour Party People), delved repeatedly into foreign countries and politics (A Mighty Heart, Welcome To Sarajevo), and experimented with different naturalistic, almost documentary styles (9 Songs, The Road To Guantanamo).

There’s also been a bit of an obsession with the works of Thomas Hardy, as he’s made Jude, based on Jude The Obscure, The Claim, which took The Mayor Of Casterbridge to the 19th Century American frontier, and now Trishna, which is Tess Of The D’Urbervilles in modern-day India. With an almost improvised style, culture clash themes and mix of musical types, the film brings together a whole heap of Winterbottom’s interests. [Read more…]

Anna Friel, Tamsin Egerton & Imogen Poots Join King of Soho

February 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Just what the world needs, a movie about Channel 5, Daily Express and porn empire owner Paul Raymond. However, with Michael Winterbottom at the helm, you have to hope it’ll be somewhat subversive and interesting. Now Variety reports Actresses Anna Friel, Tamsin Egerton, and Imogen Poots have joined the cast of The King of Soho.

The film tell the story of Raymond (Steve Coogan) who was dubbed The King of Soho because of the vast fortune he built through real estate properties and his pornographic productions, largely revolving around London’s Soho area. The plot will focus on both his personal and professional life, but it isn’t known what roles Anna Friel, Tamsin Egerton, and Imogen Poots will play.

Winterbottom is set to direct from a screenplay by Matt Greenhalgh (Nowhere Boy, Control), with the director reuniting with Coogan after 24 Hour Party People, Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story, and The Trip for director. Hopefully they’ll be able to bring a Party People sensibility to this story of how someone who built him empire on sex eventually ended up in the heart of the mainstream.

Michael Winterbottom May Take On The Beatles

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Everything from 24 Hour Party People to 9 Songs has shown us that director Michael Winterbottom likes his music, and now it appears he’s thinking about going to the inevitable place helmers who like music go – The Beatles.

The Playlist says that he and regular producing partner Andrew Eaton are involved with turning The Longest Cocktail Party: An Insider’s Diary Of The Beatles, Their Million Dollar Apple Empire And Its Wild Rise And Fall into a film. It’s been known for a long time that none other than the gobby Liam Gallagher has wanted to get the book on the screen. For a while he’s had help from Winterbottom in a producting capacity, and now Michael’s decided he definitely wants to direct too.

Richard DiLello’s book looks at the difficult formation of Apple Records (which many people don’t realise didn’t just release Beatles records) as well as problems it caused for The Beatles, the acrimonious recording of Let It Be and their split. It’s not exactly a jolly tale, but Winterbottom should be able to handle it. And while Liam Gallagher previously suggested Johnny Depp might be in the film as Beatles publicisty Derek Taylor with it seems that’s now unlikely to happen.

It’s not certain when the film might go into production, as Winterbottom will make Bialout next, and after there there are numerous project percolating. We’ll have to wait and see.
