The Lego Movie Tops The US Box Office Again, With Pompeii Going Down In Flames

February 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

lego-movie-poster2The success of The LEGO movie continues with the film topping to US box office for a third week, taking an impressive $31.4 million. That makes for a total of $183 million so far. After this success, it’s little surprise Warner is already moving forward with a sequel.

The LEGO Movie completely obliterated the new competition, neither of which could scare up a huge amount of interest. 3 Days To Kill was in second spot with $12.3 million. It could have been worse as the movie didn’t cost a huge amount to produce, but it’s not a great start for the Kevin Costner action flick.

Going into the weekend, some were wondering if Pompeii would top the chart, but in the end it fizzled rather than erupted as the big budget movie barely took $10 million. It’s far less than most disaster movies, but at least it was a little higher than other recent effects-heavy bombs, The Legend Of Hercules and I, Frankenstein.

Take a look below for the box office top 10 for the weekend of February 21st-23rd 2014.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 The LEGO Movie $31.4 $183.1
2 3 Days To Kill $12.3 $12.3
3 Pompeii $10.0 $10.0
4 Robocop $9.4 $43.6
5 The Monuments Men $8.1 $58.0
6 About Last Night $7.4 $38.1
7 Ride Along $4,6 $123.1
8 Frozen $4.3 $384.0
9 Endless Love $4,3 $20.1
10 Winter’s Tale $2.1 $11.2

A New York Winter’s Tale Trailer – Colin Farrell & Russell Crowe blend fantasy & reality

February 1, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While in the US this film will reach cinemas simply a Winter’s Tale on February 14th, for some reason in the UK it’s be A New York Winter’s Tale when it arrives here on February 21st.

Now a lengthy new trailer has arrived for the movie, which stars Colin Farrell, Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly and Downton Abbey‘s Jessica Brown Findlay.

Here’s the rather cryptic synopsis: ‘Set in a mythic New York City and spanning more than a century, “Winter’s Tale” is a story of miracles, crossed destinies, and the age-old battle between good and evil. The film stars Colin Farrell (“Total Recall”), Jessica Brown Findlay (TV’s “Downton Abbey”), and Oscar® winners Jennifer Connelly (“A Beautiful Mind”), William Hurt (“Kiss of the Spider Woman”), Eva Marie Saint (“On the Waterfront”) and Russell Crowe (“Gladiator”). “Winter’s Tale” also introduces young newcomers Ripley Sobo and Mckayla Twiggs (both from Broadway’s “Once”). The film marks the directorial debut of Academy Award-winning screenwriter Akiva Goldsman (“A Beautiful Mind”), who also wrote the screenplay, based on the acclaimed novel by Mark Helprin.’ [Read more…]

Jennifer Connelly In Talks For Akiva Goldsman’s Winter’s Tale

October 12, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jennifer Connelly’s career got a massive shot in the arm (and an Oscar) with A Beautiful Mind, which was written by Akiva Goldsman. Now Deadline reports Connelly may reteam with Goldsman for his directorial debut, Winter’s Tale.

The movie has been in development for a couple of years, but it’s now moving towards production, with Colin Farrell and Jessica Brown Findlay set to star. Based on the novel by Mark Helprin, the story is set in both the present day and the late 19th century, and centres on a thief (Farrell) who falls in love with the Irish heiress (Jessica Brown Findlay) he just robbed, right before she dies. He later learns that he possesses the gift of reincarnation, and becomes determined to save her life. Assuming she signs on, Connelly would play the role of the main woman’s mother. The rest of the cast includes William Hurt, Will Smith, Matt Bomer, Lucy Griffiths and Eva Marie Saint.

Connelly is currently working on Darren Aronofsky’s Noah, but may move onto Winter’s Tale after that.

Matt Bomer & Lucy Griffiths Head For The Promised Land

September 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It feels like Akiva Goldman has been putting together his directorial outing, Winter’s Tale, forever. It’s been slowly coming together for several years, and now it’s moved forward once again, with Deadline reporting that Matt Bomer, Lucy Griffiths and the legendary Eva Marie Saint have signed up to appear in the movie.

They join Colin Farrell, Jessica Brown Findlay, William Hurt, Russell Crowe and Will Smith, with the last two taking very small roles as a favour to Goldsman, who’s worked with the previously on the likes of I Am Legend and A Beautiful Mind.

The romance, which will be producer/screenwriter Goldsman’s directorial debut, is based on Mark Helprin’s fantasy novel that splits it story of star-crossed lovers between 19th century and present-day Manhattan. Colin Farrell will play Peter Lake, an uneducated, middle-aged Irish burglar who meets the love of his life, sickly heiress Beverly Penn, while attempting to rob her palatial mansion in the Upper West Side. Jessica Brown Findlay of Downton Abbey will play his invalid lover.

Oddly though Bomer and Griffiths have been cast to play Peter’s parents, although quite how that will work, seeing as Farrell is older than both Bomer and Griffiths, isn’t clear. The producers haven’t revealed what role Saint will play, as apparently it would be a bit of a spoiler.

The movie will finally go in front of the cameras starting October 27th.

Colin Farrell On For Winter’s Tale

April 27, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Normally a movie looks to fill its lead roles first, but with Winter’s Tale, it’s been the supporting parts that have gained the most interest, with Will Smith and Russell Crowe sniffing around smaller roles in the movie. However it may now have found its lead, as Variety reports Colin Farrell is in talks for the movie.

The story is set in both the present day and the late 19th century, and centres on a thief (Farrell) who falls in love with the Irish heiress (Jessica Brown Findlay) he just robbed, right before she dies. He later learns that he possesses the gift of reincarnation, and becomes determined to save her life. Smith was interested in playing a judge, while Russell Crowe was up to portray a mob boss called Pearly Soames, although it’s not clear if either actor is stillinvolved.

Akiva Goldsman is directing Winter’s Tale from his own screenplay, which he adapted from Mark Halprin’s novel. Production will hopefully start in September.

Will Smith & Russell Crowe Having A Winter’s Tale

February 2, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Will Smith and Russell Crowe are used to being leading men, but according to Vulture, Akiva Goldsman has pulled off something of a coup, getting both actors to take supporting roles in his directorial debut, Winter’s Tale. Crowe’s involvement was first mooted last November, but it’s only now that he has officially signed on.

The story is set in both the present day and the late 19th century, and centres on a thief who falls in love with the Irish heiress he just robbed, right before she dies. He later learns that he possesses the gift of reincarnation, and becomes determined to save her life. Will Smith will play a judge, while Russell Crowe is portraying a mob boss called Pearly Soames, who is trying to kill the burglar. Neither the thief nor heiress have been cast yet.

Akiva Goldsman is directing Winter’s Tale from his own screenplay, which he adapted from Mark Halprin’s novel. It is said that Akiva Goldsman called in every favour he could to get this project off the ground, and has shaved $20 million off the budget. Production may start in September, assuming Warner Bros. ends up giving Winter’s Tale the green light.

Russell Crowe May Have A Winter’s Tale

November 7, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Back in February, it was revealed that Oscar-winning writer/producer Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind, The Da Vinci Code) is set to make his directorial debut with Winter’s Tale for Warner Bros. Now things are moving forward, as THR reports that Russell Crowe is loosely attached to portray the villain.

The story, based on Mark Halprin’s novel, takes place at both the beginning and the end of the 20th century and centers on Peter Lake, a burglar who robs an Irish heiress and begins to fall for her as she dies in his arms. He comes to learn he has the gift of reincarnation, and is determined to save her.

Tom Hiddleston and Benjamin Walker are reading for the role of a criminal on the run. Elizabeth Olsen, Bella Heathcote, Gabriele Wilde, and Sarah Gadon are reading for the sick woman. It isn’t known when production will begin on Winter’s Tale, as everything is dependent on getting a decent enough cast together to secure final funding.
