Director: Richard Linklater
Running Time: 104 mins
Certificate: 12A
Release Date: April 26th 2013

It’s taken quite a while to get Bernie to the UK. It’s almost a year since its US debut and a few months after it flirted the edges of the awards ceremonies, such as Jack Black being nominated for a Golden Globe. Now it’s here though, but has it been worth the wait?

Cosmopolis (DVD)

November 12, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Robert Pattinson, Sarah Gadon, Kevin Durand, Paul Giamatti
Director: David Cronenberg
Running Time: 104 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: November 12th 2012

Robert Pattinson veers far from Twilight with this strange and dark trip into David Cronenberg’s take on Don DeLillo’s novel. Pattinson plays the rich, young and handsome billionaire Eric Packer, who gets in his limo one morning and demands to be taken across Manhattan to get a haircut.

What should be a simple trip gets increasingly complex, with a visit by the President and a funeral causing delays, before the streets erupt into full-scale riots – with many of the participants protesting just the sort of rampant capitalism Packer represents. Throughout the day Eric meets various people, including his girlfriend, business acquaintances and sexual partners, most of whom join him in his limo. What at first seems like a rather random journey starts to see Eric’s life implode until he reaches the point where it appears like he’s actually trying to destroy himself. [Read more…]

Sing Your Song (DVD)

September 25, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Harry Belafonte
Director: Susanne Bostock
Running Time: 104 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: September 24th 2012

Admittedly, it was rather different for them as there very existence was political, whether they wanted it to be or not.

Sing Your Song looks at singer and actor Harry Belafonte, a man who this documentary suggests should be as lauded for his activism as his voice. He grew up poor, but it was the Second World War that really highlighted to him the evils of racism. There was segregation in the army, and then when he and other blacks soldiers returned home from fighting for their country, they found they were still treated as second class citizens despite their brave actions.
