Like Cattle Towards Glow (DVD Review)

July 14, 2016 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: Nicolas Hau, Gabriel Norman, E.D. Yang, Joris Monnier, Jimmy P.
Director: Dennis Cooper, Zac Farley
Running Time: 93 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: July 11th 2016 (UK)

Dennis Cooper is a writer who’s gained quite a following with his tales that delve into the strange, violent and shocking, often revolving around young men, sex and the body. Here he writes and helps direct his first film, a series of five vignettes that follow those same obsessions.

Like Cattle Towards Glow was originally written to be directed as porn, and while substantially changed since then, you can still see the echoes with the way each scene is set up. It retains an explicit edge, with erections, masturbation and nudity, but it certainly couldn’t be considered porn.

In the first scene, a man is sitting on his bed, playing with his dick and looking pretty disconnected and upset. He heads to another young man’s house, who is paying him to play dead while he has sex with him. The first guy says he’s only there for the money, while the other is using it to process the death of a friend he rejected romantically. However, there may be more to it for both. [Read more…]

Burroughs: The Movie (Blu-ray Review)

July 14, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: William S. Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, James Grauerholz, Lucien Carr
Director: Howard Brookner
Running Time: 90 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: July 11th 2016 (UK)

Virtually lost for many years except for bad quality bootleg copies, this ‘definitive’ portrait of writer William S. Burroughs has been properly restored and given a very nice Criterion Collection release. As notable as the film itself is the talent behind the camera – something even more remarkable as it started as a short NYU Film School project.

Jim Jarmusch (Dead Man, Only Lovers Left Alive) recorded the sound, while it was shot by Tom DiCillo (Johnny Suede, Delirious). The director was Howard Brookner, who made Burroughs and another biographical documentary, Robert Wilson and the Civil Wars, and then made his fiction film debut with Bloodhounds of Broadway, before tragically dying of AIDS in 1989. If he hadn’t passed away, it’s likely he’d have gone on to great things. [Read more…]

Allegiant (Blu-ray Review)

July 14, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Jeff Daniels, Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort
Director: Robert Schwentke
Running Time: 120 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: July 11th 2016 (UK)

Poor old Divergent. Things started off well at the box office with the first movie, which helped Lionsgate decide they should expand their plans and turn the three books into four films. However, the second movie was slightly muted at the box office, and this one didn’t do well at all.

In Allegiant, Tris (Shailene Woodley) has opened the box, which suggests the city and its factions are part of an experiment, and that despite what they’ve been told, there is more to the world outside Chicago’s walls. Once out (despite many trying to stop them), Tris, Four (Theo James), her brother (Ansel Elgort) and Peter (Miles Teller), meet David (Jeff Daniels), the director of the experiment. He says they have been using Chicago and the factions to eventually find somebody genetically pure – the other people are defective – and that Tris may be that person. [Read more…]
