Neil’s Puppet Dreams – Neil Patrick Harris goes Bollywood in the season finale

January 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

All good things must come to an end, and now it’s time for the season finale of the great web series Neil’s Puppet Dreams. If you’ve been following BGPS, you’ll know it’s all about Neil Patrick Harris, who apparently dreams in puppet, where things get rather surreal.

This time around it give NPH an excuse to do a massive Bollywood musical number, where he falls in love with a puppet cow and gets a little bestial. It’s very silly but as with the rest of the series it’s a lot of fun.

If you’ve missed any of the other episodes, you can find them all here, or check them out over at Nerdist’s Youtube channel.

Neil’s Puppet Dreams – Joe Manganiello crashes Neil Patrick Harris’ dream

January 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

The great web series Neil’s Puppet Dreams is back with a new episode, which sees Neil Patrick Harris falling asleep once more and dreaming in puppets. The problem this time is that his dream is so dull that his hubby David Burkta’s camp carnival of a dream crashes Neil’s.

There’s also the opportunity for a few cameos from the likes of drag artist Willam Belli, Andrew Christian underwear model Colby Melvin and Joe Manganiello of Magic Mike and True Blood fame! So take a look above.

Adrien Brody Goes Gay In New Pacovolume Music Video, Olaf & Paul

January 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Love is painting a cock onto toast with ketchup – or at least it is in Olaf & Paul, the latest release from French singer/songwriter Pacovolume. He’s scored a bit of a coup by getting Adrien Brody to be in the video, which tells the story of the relationship between two men, complete with snogging, sex and the aforementioned toast.

It doesn’t end well, and indeed it gets a tiny bit confusing (partly because it starts cutting in scenes from Brody’s movies such as The Pianist and Wrecked), which I’m presuming suggests much of this is going on in the head of the student character (Pacovolume), rather than in reality.

Whatever is actually happening, take a look above.

I Don’t Want To Go Back Alone (Eu Não Quero Voltar Sozinho) – Sweet gay short film from Brazil

January 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Although young people coming to terms with their sexuality has been dealt with a lot in gay cinema, Brazilian writer-director Daniel Ribeiro gives this an unusual twist by making his short movie about a blind teen. The film is a couple of years old, but I just found it so thought I’d share.

Leo is the blind boy in question, who spends most of his time with his female friend Giovana. However the arrival of new kid Gabriel stirs up feelings in Leo, and as they spark up a friendship, Leo has to deal with Giovana’s feelings of jealousy. Leo soon realises he’s falling in love, but will Gabriel feel the same way?

It’s sweet, life-affirming and very well made, so take a look at the film above.

Neil’s Puppet Dreams Episode 4 – Neil Patrick Harris is a puppet-phile!

December 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We’re loving the web series Neil’s Puppet Dreams, which is why we’ve been posting each new episode. Now the latest one has arrived, which might not travel outside the US as well as earlier eps, but is still a lot of fun.

The episode is a parody of the ‘To Catch A Predator’ segments of the news magazine program Dateline NBC, which follow sting operations that are set up to lure paedophiles to what they think is rendez-vous with an underage teen. However they actually get confronted by a TV reporter and are then arrested.

In the web series, the narcoleptic Neil Patrick Harris – who dreams in puppets – is caught up by ‘To Catch A Puppeteer’, where his sordid attraction to puppets is laid bare! Take a look above.

Eastsiders – Entertaining first episode of the new gay-themed web series arrives

December 16, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There’s an awful lot of interesting stuff going on in the world of web series, presumably because it’s a great platform for the sort of stuff that TV executives would shy away from, but which can still make for good entertainment, especially in bite-sized nuggets.

Eastsiders has just launched its first episode and it looks like it could be well worth following, with a smart script, good acting and handsome guys. In the first episode it’s the morning after the night before, as two guys deal with the revelation of infidelity four years into their relationship. While that might sound a bit miserable, it’s told with humour and heart, and even in its first 13 minutes shows a knack for creating very human characters.

Here’s the synopsis for the series: ‘What happens after the world ends? Written and directed by award winning playwright Kit Williamson, “EastSiders” explores the aftermath of infidelity on a gay couple in Silverlake. When Cal (Kit Williamson) finds out Thom (Van Hansis) has been cheating on him with Jeremy (Matthew McKelligon), their relationship is turned upside down. Will the lies tear them apart or are they just stubborn enough to stay together forever?

‘Drunken outbursts and double standards abound in this dark comedy about the sad and funny messes we make out of our lives. Cal’s best friend Kathy (Constance Wu) is always there for him with a bottle of whiskey in her purse, but she has her own problems with her nice guy boyfriend Ian (John Halbach), even if they’re all in her head. Stephen Guarino guest stars as a party promoter throwing one last bash before the apocalypse.’

Williamson has commented, “I wanted to create gay characters with the same complexity and flaws straight characters are allotted. The way gay couples are depicted is often frustrating to me. There’s a huge spectrum of lifestyles and experiences within the gay community and I wanted to explore a kind of relationship that isn’t often represented.  We are so profoundly grateful to have assembled a cast of this calibre, because this kind of story really hinges on the acting.”

Take a look at Episode 1 above. New installments will be released over on the series’ website and on YouTube every week.

Triple Standard Short Film – He’s not gay he just sleeps with guys

December 16, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There are a lot of really good gay-themed short film out there, and one I’ve just discovered is Triple Standard, which you can watch above. The film starts off in a men’s locker room, where Crim reveals his ugly homophobia after D licks him.

Despite Crim’s hatred of ‘that fag shit’, it turns out that the two men have been having sex with one another for three years. But after Crim’s latest outburst, D has had enough and makes a stand against the other’s homophobic comments and constant insistence that he isn’t gay, telling him he need to stop.

One of the most interesting bits of the short isn’t just that Crim insisting he isn’t gay (although maybe, just maybe, he can come round to thinking he’s bi), but also insists his lover isn’t gay either, even though he’s standing in front of him saying he is. It’s a great display of the sort of internal homophobia some still possess and the frayed loops of logic people use to get round it – if I’m not gay and neither is the guy I’m screwing, it’s not gay!

Triple Standard is a surprisingly emotionally evolving short, with some good performances and nice touches in the script. Watch William Branden Blinn’s great little film above.

Neil’s Puppet Dreams Episode 3 – The Restaurant – Neil does not eat beaver!

December 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The new web series, Neil’s Puppet Dreams, is turning out to be silly but an awful lot of fun. If you’ve missed the first two episodes – you can watch them here and here – the idea is that Neil Patrick Harris is pretty much a narcoleptic, and when he falls asleep he dreams in puppets.

This time around Neil ends up dreaming he’s a waiter, but he’s brought the wrong food to a puppet with the best toupee we’ve ever seen. One woman’s got crabs, there’s a beaver that wants wood and the kitchen is full of illegal aliens!

It’s a little bit camp and very entertaining, so take a look above. New episodes of Neil’s Puppet Dreams are due to show up every week over on the Nerdist Youtube channel.

20MALEGAYNYC: Short film asks why gay guys hate one another

December 11, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s something many of us are familiar with – ‘straight-acting’ gay guys don’t like those who are flamboyant, while those who embrace the stereotypically gay look down on those they think are trying to ‘pass. Young and old gays often dislike each other, the toned often dismiss those who don’t spend their lives down the gym and on and on and on.

Young filmmaker Blake Pruitt set out to explore why this is, and whether it’s the result of some form of internalised homophobia. He’s come up with short film 20MALEGAYNYC, where he interviews young New Yorkers about their views of others in the community.

In an op-ed in The Advocate, Pruitt writes, “Some have an expectation that other members of the community should not act in a typically homosexual or heterosexual way for lack of a “real personality.” However, I’m confident that I could speak with any gay man, however many boas he may be wearing, and have an intelligent discussion about gay identity and internalized homophobia. And he would continue on his way, skipping down the street singing showtunes. The stereotype is not “the other”—it’s us. When we push away other members of our own community by labeling them as a thing rather than a person, even though we acknowledge that the concept of this “thing” comes from outside the gay world, we’re doing ourselves a disservice. Renato identifies this (correctly, I believe) in the film as partially coming from’“self-hate.'”

He adds, “The problem is that the self we hate isn’t totally defined. I have heard so many times, ‘I know I’m stereotypical in a lot of ways, but…’ Why is there a ‘but’? What we see as resisting these clichés is only keeping them alive. I can see how a young gay man would be scared to come out and enter into a world in which acting too stereotypically will not only lead to bullying by others, but also a total dismissal from fellow gay men.”

You can take a look at his film about this above. It’s certainly an interesting subject, as many have noted the gay people often seem more critical of aspects of our our community – whether it’s Lady Gaga loving flamers or leather-clad daddies – than many straight people are.

Neil’s Puppet Dreams Episode 2 – Meet Neil Patrick Harris’ Trouser Weasel

December 5, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The new web series Neil’s Puppet Dreams is shaping up to be a lot of fun. Things kicked off last week with Neil Patrick Harris revealing that he dreams in puppets, then falling asleep and plummeting to earth.

Now his puppety narcolepsy has reached the point where he’s consulting a doctor (guest star Nathan Fillion), but he falls asleep and gets into a situation where his hairy trouser weasel shows up.

Yep, it’s true, if you’ve ever wanted to see Neil Patrick Harris’ trouser weasel, or indeed his giant cock, now’s your chance! Have fun watching it above.

New episodes of Neil’s Puppet Dreams are due to show up every Tuesday over on the Nerdist Youtube channel.
