BGPS’s Advent Calendar Of Buff Blokes: Day 9 – Mike Vogel

December 9, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With all our previous Advent Calendars guy, there’s been a reason to include them, but Mike Vogel is just here because he’s had a good year and he’s very pretty to look at. For a long time Vogel’s been on the edge of breaking into the big time, but he’s never quite made it to the a-list.

Since his film debut in 2003, Vogel has appeared in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake, Supercross, The Sister Of The Traveling Pants, Poseidon, Cloverfield and more. In the last couple of years we’ve seen him in Blue Valentine, She’s Out Of My League, The Help and What’s Your Number?, while he’s also taken regular roles in the TV series Miami Medical and Pan Am. The 60s set airline show in currently in severe danger of being cancelled, so he could be in need of a new job soon (Mike, if you read this, you can have a job in my bedroom anytime).

Whether the 32 year old will ever truly hit it big is yet to be seen, but as long as he’s around to look good, I for one won’t be complaining. [Read more…]

BGPS’s Advent Calendar Of Buff Blokes: Day 8 – Sean Maher

December 8, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Like Zachary Quinto a few days ago, today’s advent calendar entry is a new member of the gayborhood, as he only came out publicly a couple of months ago. Sean Maher is perhaps most famous for playing Simon Tam in Joss Whedon’s short-lived sci-fi series, Firefly, reprising the role in the movie Serenity.

Since then he’s made numerous guest appearance on TV shows such as the such as The Mentalist, Ghost Whisperer and Drop Dead Diva. It looked like he’d got a new regular TV job this autumn in The Playboy Club, playing a closeted gay man, but sadly that show got cancelled after only a few episodes. He’ll next be seen reteaming with director Joss Whedon for a new film version of Much Ado About Nothing.

Sean lives with his partner Paul and their two adopted children (and with kids involved, it’s almost impressive nobody right-wing nutter outed him before). Click below to enlarge some pics of the delectable Sean, including a few of him topless, just to make us extra jealous of his boyfriend. [Read more…]

Europe Picks Its 2012 Shooting Stars – The top young actors from across the continent

December 8, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Every year the EFP (European FIlm Promotion) puts together a jury who pick 10 top acting talents they think are Europe’s best young actors. The 2012 list has now been released and it includes Adèle Haenel (France), Anna Maria Mühe (Germany), Hilmar Gudjónsson (Iceland), Antonia Campbell-Hughes (Ireland), Isabella Ragonese (Italy), Jakub Gierszał (Poland), Ana Ularu (Poland), Bill Skarsgård (Sweden), Max Hubacher (Switzerland) and Riz Ahmed (UK).

The 10 actors will be showcased at the upcoming Berlin International Film Festival, which should be a boost to their career and also demonstrate the superb talent coming out of all parts of Europe (it doesn’t hurt either that they’re not bad to look at). They follow in the footsteps of former Shooting Stars such as Carey Mulligan, Moritz Bleibtreu, Mélanie Laurent, Alba Rohrwacher, Domhnall Gleeson and Elena Anaya. And it’s certainly good to see Four Lions stars Riz Ahmed representing the UK on the new list

Take a look at our gallery of all 10 actors below and underneath that find out a little more about each of this year’s Shooting Stars.

Adele Haenel
Ana Ularu
Anna Maria Muhe

Antonia Campbell Hughes
Bill Skarsgard
Hilmar Gudjonsson

Isabella Ragonese
Jakub Gierszal
Max Hubacher

Riz Ahmed

France: Adèle Haenel
Selected Films:
Water Lilies (Naissance des pieuvres) by Céline Sciamma (France 2006)
House of Tolerance (L’Apollonide) by Bertrand Bonello (France 2011)
Heat Wave (Après le Sud) by Jean-Jacques Jauffret (France 2011)
Jury’s comment: Coming from a country renowned for producing great screen actresses, Haenel still stands out as a true original. Whether playing tomboyish, spiky, fragile or misunderstood, she is always daring and hypnotic, vanishing into her characters with unabashed fearlessness.

Germany: Anna Maria Mühe
Selected Films:
Cracks In The Shell (Die Unsichtbare) by Christian Schwochow (Germany 2010)
November Child (Novemberkind) by Christian Schwochow (Germany 2007)
Big Girls Don’t Cry (Große Mädchen weinen nicht) by Maria von Heland (Germany, 2002)
Jury’s comment: Never predictable despite her already impressive body of work, Mühe is an actress of consummate skill whose ability to bring such a great variety of characters to vivid life is both rare and breath-taking. Vibrant, complex and technically commanding.

Iceland: Hilmar Gudjónsson
Selected Films:
Either Way (Á annan veg) by Hafsteinn Gunnar Sigurdsson (Iceland 2011)
Mr. Bjarnfreðarson (Bjarnfreðarson) by Ragnar Bragason (Iceland 2009)
Black’s Game (Svartur á leik) by Óskar Thór Axelsson (Iceland 2012)
Jury’s comment: A compelling and wonderful actor with a strong, tangible style even playing the seemingly weak, foolish boy at the heart of Either Way. With his versatility and ability to stand out, Gudjónsson has a promising career ahead.

Ireland: Antonia Campbell-Hughes
Selected Films:
The Other Side Of Sleep by Rebecca Daly (Ireland, The Netherlands, Hungary 2011)
Kelly and Victor by Kieran Evans (UK, Ireland 2011)
Albert Nobbs by Rodrigo Garcia (Ireland, UK 2011)
Jury’s comment: Antonia’s acting is seductively minimalistic but demonstrates magnificent charisma at the same time. In The Other Side Of Sleep, her character’s inner solitude and sadness are conveyed with haunting, empathetic power. She is a performer of wonderful soul and depth.

Italy: Isabella Ragonese
Selected Films:
The First Assignment (Il primo incarico) by Giorgia Cecere(Italy 2010)
Our Life (La nostra vita) by Daniele Luchetti (Italy, France 2010)
Her Whole Life Ahead (Tutta la vita davanti) by Paolo Virzì (Italy 2008)
Jury’s comment: Ragonese is an actress of great versatility and deep intelligence, with a commanding ability to present a clear emotional journey on screen. This makes her an extremely accessible screen presence, capable of fragility, intensity, sophistication and edginess.

Poland: Jakub Gierszał
Selected Films:
Suicide Room (Sala Samobójców) by Jan Komasa (Poland 2011)
All That I Love (Wszystko co Kocham) by Jacek Borcuch (Poland 2009)
Lasting Moments (WT) (Chwile Nieulotne) by Jacek Borcuch  (Poland 2011/12)
Jury’s comment: From the moment you see him, it is clear that Gierszał was born to be on the big screen. Revealing a kaleidoscope of emotions, his ability to draw you into a story is unparalleled. He is touching, believable, sensitive – a pure and unique talent.

Romania: Ana Ularu
Selected Films:
Outbound (Periferic) by Bogdan George Apetri (Romania, Austria 2011)
Turkey Girl (Legenda Curcanului Zburator) by Cristian Mungiu (Romania, Germany 2005), short film
The Italian Girls (Italiencele) by Nap Toader (Romania 2004)
Jury’s comment: With Outbound, Ularu not only carries an entire film on her shoulders but does so with a complex, difficult character in convincing, magnetic fashion. Steely yet vulnerable, she possesses an amazing and adaptable physical presence, and eyes that really do serve as windows to her soul.

Sweden: Bill Skarsgård
Selected Films:
Simple Simon (I rymden finns inga känslor) by Andreas Öhman (Sweden 2010)
Simon and the Oaks (Simon och ekarna) by Lisa Ohlin (Sweden, Germany 2011)
The Crown Jewels (Kronjuvelerna) by Ella Lemhagen (Sweden 2011)
Jury’s comment: In Simon and the Oaks, Skarsgård conveys depth, emotion and deep longing as a young man plunged into an identity crisis and desperate to know more about his family background. His acting feels like an exploration that we are lucky enough to witness.

Switzerland: Max Hubacher
Selected Films:
The Foster Boy (Der Verdingbub) by Markus Imboden (Switzerland, Germany 2011)
Stationspiraten by Michael Schaerer (Switzerland 2010)
Jury’s comment: In a performance of beautiful clarity, Hubacher conveys the struggle, suffering and will to survive of his Foster Boy with enlightening authenticity. Given his young age, it is impressive how he is able to make such a strong and moving connection with the audience.

United Kingdom: Riz Ahmed
Selected Films:
Shifty by Eran Creevy (UK 2009)
Four Lions by Christopher Morris (UK 2010)
The Road to Guantanamo by Michael Winterbottom (UK 2006)
Jury’s comment: Watching Ahmed on screen is to be treated to an actor of extraordinary presence and talent. In Trishna, he bridges love and rage, fragility and power, tenderness and brutality. A versatile, elegant, dignified actor with outstanding potential.

See Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain & More Take On Cinematic Villains

December 8, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Every year around awards season, the New York Times uses its muscle to get a bunch of top actors to dress up and pose for unsual pictures, all related to a different theme. This year’s theme is ‘Touch Of Evil’ and it sees everyone from Brad Pitt to George Clooney taking part, dressed up as some of cinema’s greatest villainous archetypes.

We’ve gathered together some of the images below, but you can get a better look over at the NYTimes site, along with videos of the stars, which sadly aren’t embeddable. It’s incredible how they get all these people to take part, and it makes for some great shots.

BGPS’s Advent Calendar Of Buff Blokes: Day 7 – Chris Salvatore

December 7, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starting off BGPS’s advent calendar last week with Eating Out: Drama Camp’s Aaron Milo proved an extremely popular move. That’s undoubtedly because he is insanely hot and not afraid to prance about wearing very few clothes. It also caused one guy to e-mail me to ask when we could expect to see Milo’s co-star, Chris Salvatore, who’s equally as gorgeous.

Well, the answer is today, and just like Aaron Milo, Chris is even better with his top off and not afraid to prove that to us!

The gay actor/musician made his feature film debut playing pretty but shallow Zack in Eating Out 3: All You Can Eat, and he’s recently reprised the role in Eating Out: Drama Camp and the upcoming Eating Out: The Open Weekend. While it’s great to see him smouldering on screen in the uber-gay movie series, he’s equally gorgeous in a still image, so click below to enlarge our hot pics of Chris. [Read more…]

BGPS’s Advent Calendar Of Buff Blokes: Day 6 – Cheyenne Jackson

December 6, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With our previous advent calendars entries, there have been excuses why we posted hot pics of them, but with Cheyenne Jackson, all we can say is that no excuse is needed. That said, I can can think of a good reason why he’s currently very apt, as he became one of the first well-known gay people to get hitched after same-sex marriage was legalised in New York. He married his husband, Monte Lapka, on September 3rd, a month and a half after the law was changed..

A real small town boy from Washington state, the hotter than hot actor first made his name on Broadway in musicals such as All Shook Up and Xanadu. That led to on-screen work, with recurring roles in the likes of Glee and 30 Rock. He hasn’t made that many film appearances, although he was in United 93 and has several other movies in the can that are yet to be released.

The only reason we can think that we haven’t seen more of him on the big screen is that he’s too good looking! I’m only half joking about that, as he’s so handsome he doesn’t quite look real. He’s kind of like what people would create if they were allowed to make a photofit of their perfect guy.

Click below to enjoy some of the hottest pics we could find of Cheyenne and get ready to swoon. By the way, his first name is a reference to the fact his father is Native American. [Read more…]

BGPS’s Advent Calendar Of Buff Blokes: Day 5 – Montgomery Clift

December 5, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We’re going back in time a little with today’s advent calendar entry, but in the history of cinema, there have been few stars as beautiful as Montgomery Clift, so it would be a shame not to include him. There have been few stars quite as tragic either.

In the late 40s and early 50s, Clift was on the path to becoming one of the biggest stars in the world. After The Search, Red River, A Place In The Sun, I Confess and From Here To Eternity, he was a true heart-throb with three Oscar nominations to his name, and in many people’s opinion a talent on a par with James Dean and Marlon Brando – and all that by the age of 24.

However, Clift was also gay at a time when homosexuality was illegal and he never came to terms with his sexuality. He suffered from severe self-loathing throughout his adult life (as did many gay people back them) and became a severe alcoholic. In 1956, during the filming of Raintree County, he crashed his car while drunk, which caused various injuries, including facial lacerations that meant he was never quite as good looking again. While he continued to work, with a prominent facial scar and alcohol quickly aging him, his roles were limited and his days as a heart-throb were essentially over.

He died in 1966, aged only 45, from alcohol-related occlusive coronary artery disease. Acting teacher Robert Lewis famously described Clift’s death as the longest suicide in history.

All that’s a bit depressing, but it’s a good reminder of how much more difficult it was to be gay just a few decades ago (not that it’s always a picnic now). There’s no doubt though that as a young man, he was astonishingly good-looking, so click below to enlarge our selection of pics, and enjoy what he was like before the drink and self-loathing got to him. Oh, and check out some of his movies as he was incredibly talented. [Read more…]

BGPS’s Advent Calendar Of Buff Blokes: Day 4 – Charlie David

December 4, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

As I noted in my review of Judas Kiss, if gay cinema had an a-list, Charlie David would be on it. He’s kind of like the Brad Pitt of queer cinema, which is both more and less impressive than it sounds. As a result, it would be rather rude if we hadn’t included him in our Advent Calendar Of Buff Blokes!

David first came to the attention of fans of gay entertainment with the supernatural TV series Dante’s Cove in 2005, before he moved in gay cinema with the likes of A Four Letter Word and Kiss The Bride. Not content with just starring in movies, he turned writer in 2008 with Mulligans, which he also produced and acted in. More recently he produced and starred in Judas Kiss, which came out on DVD a couple of weeks ago.

However most importantly he’s hot, and as the pictures below prove, the 31-year-old isn’t averse to getting him well toned pecs out! So click below to enlarge the images and enjoy the buffness! [Read more…]

BGPS’s Advent Calendar Of Buff Blokes: Day 3 – Zachary Quinto

December 3, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The first entries in our advent calendar were actors from recent gay-themed movie, and now it’s time for a man who’s only recently come out as gay, Zachary Quinto. His quiet yet powerful coming out was also a good reminder of what a hottie he is, and just to confirm that, it was great to see him playing gay – and rather camp – on American Horror Story recently (and getting killed by a guy in a all-over rubber gimp suit, no less).

In case you haven’t been paying attention, since Heroes ended Quinto hasn’t just been waiting around to play Spock in a sequel to Star Trek (which shoots early next year, incidentally). He’s turned producer with the movie Margin Call, which he also stars in, alongside Paul Bettany and Kevin Spacey. The movie recently picked up Best First Film for director JC Chandor from the New York Film Critics Circle, so it may do well in the upcoming awards season. It hits UK cinemas on January 12th.

However in our advent calendar we mainly care that he’s pretty, so enjoy our selection of pics of him below, including a few topless and man-on-man snogging shots from the TV show So NoTORIous, which are particularly nice to see. Click below to enlarge the images and underneath that enjoy a video of his getting cover in white, creamy goo. And no, we’re not kidding about that. [Read more…]

BGPS’s Advent Calendar Of Buff Blokes: Day 2 – Tom Cullen & Chris New

December 2, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In the last few weeks Tom Cullen and Chris New have been getting major plaudits for their acting in the wonderful Weekend. However, we here at BGPS are horribly shallow people, so rather than following in the foosteps of the London Film Festival and nominating them for a Best Actor award, we just want to say they’re both pretty hot!

So after Eating Out: Drama Camp’s Aaron Milo yesterday, the second day of our advent calendar of gorgeous buff blokes is dedicated to the delectable Cullen and New! A gay classic in the making, Weekend is still in a few cinemas if you want to catch it, or otherwise you’ll have to pre-order it on DVD or Blu-ray so that you can see it the moment it reaches those formats on March 5th, 2012. Until then click below to enlarge the pics of the film’s resident hotties.

Oh and if you like the Quad Poster below, it’s now available to buy from Amazon. [Read more…]
