Big Gay Love Trailer – Jonathan Lisecki & Nicholas Brendon explore the image-obsessed gay world

May 13, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

I’d wondered what had happened to Big Gay Love. In March 2013 it launched a Kickstarter to help finish the movie, but I hadn’t heard much about it since.

Now comes a trailer ahead of screenings around the US this summer.

Here’s the synopsis: Lovable but insecure party planner Bob (Jonathan Lisecki) is looking for love in the image-obsessed gay world. When romance strikes in the form of hunky chef Andy (Nicholas Brendon), will he be able to handle it?

The current screenings include:
Camelot Theater, Palm Springs: May 23
Downtown Independent, Los Angeles: June 6
Landmark Theaters Hillcrest, San Diego: July 16
NYC: July 2014
San Francisco: July 2014
…and Tugg.com screenings by request! [Read more…]

Upstairs Inferno Teaser – New look at doc about the biggest mass killing of gay people in US history

May 12, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last June we covered Upstairs Inferno when it was looking for production funding. Now the documentary is in the can, a teaser trailer is here, and the makers just need a bit more cash for completion.

They’ve launched an Indiegogo campaign to raise $12,500 to cover post-production costs.

The film is about the events on June 24th, 1973, when an arsonist set fire to a gay bar in New Orleans called the Up Stairs Lounge. The result was the largest gay mass murder in U.S. history. Despite the staggering historical significance, few people know about the tragedy.   Thirty-two people were killed and some bodies were never identified because their families were ashamed that the victims were gay. No one was ever charged with the crime.

The tragedy did not stop at the loss of lives. There were also the delayed injuries: lost jobs, fear, public ridicule and severed families. The devastation was compounded by the homophobic reactions and utter lack of concern by the general public, government and religious leaders.  The fire permanently altered lives and was the root of many lifelong struggles.

According to the makers, Upstairs Inferno is poised to be the most comprehensive and authoritative film on the fire. Interviews with survivors and witnesses to the aftermath have been heart wrenching and insightful. Some of the people we interviewed haven’t discussed the fire until now, especially on camera. The documentary also features interviews with historians, experts and current leaders of the New Orleans LGBT community.  Police reports, crime scene photographs, personal photographs, newspaper clippings and video clips from local news stations are also featured in the film.

People can donate to Upstairs Inferno and help preserve history on film by following the link on www.upstairsinferno.com or directly at http://igg.me/at/UpstairsInfernoFilm [Read more…]

Hawaii Trailer – The latest gay-themed movie from Marco Berger, the director of Absent & Plan B

May 5, 2014 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Argentinian director Marco Berger has made waved in the LGBT cinema world with Plan B, the Berlin Teddy award-winning Absent and the sexy short film collection Sexual Tension: Volatile.

Now he’s coming back with Hawaii, which continues his looks at being gay (or at least gay-adjacent) in the modern world.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Sexual tension spills off the screen in this sweaty, titilating bromance from award-winning director Marco Berger (Absent, Plan B, Sexual Tension: Volatile). Hawaii follows Martin and Eugenio (Manuel Vignau and Mateo Chiarino), two former childhood friends who reunite during a hot summer in the Argentinean countryside. As they work together to restore Eugenio’s summer home, a game of power and desire ensues — forcing the two buddies to grapple with their sexual attraction and reconsider their relationship. With gorgeous cinematography, a lush setting and compelling lead performances, Hawaii is an intimate character study that pushes past social boundaries.’

Hawaii should be out later this year via TLA. [Read more…]

Errodity(s) Teaser Trailer – Things get odd and a pretty sexy in the collection of gay short films

May 5, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s often difficult to convince someone they need to watch, when you’ve only got 30 seconds to do it.

However, Errodity(s) manages it by telling us absolutely nothing about the short film collection, but it includes plenty of shots of half-dressed guys getting naughty with one another and hints that it’s all a little bit strange. And sometimes theat’s enough.

It’s described as being, ‘”A little bit odd… highly erotic.” In this collection of short, sexy tales, the lives of young men take unexpected turns when they encounter the strange and the supernatural.’

Errodity(s) certainly wins today’s award for being intriguing.

It’s not clear when exactly we’ll get to see it, but it should be coming fairly soon from TLA Releasing.

Take a look at the rather NSFW trailer above. [Read more…]

Club King Trailer – Looking at legendary NYC/LA gay club promoter Mario Diaz

May 5, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

On May 8th Club King premieres at the Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, and so it’s a great time to take a look at the trailer.

The film is ‘An independent documentary about legendary NY and LA club promoter/actor/MC/stylist/dancer/producer Mario Diaz and his fabulous friends.’

And as the trailer shows, Diaz certainly knows how to surround himself with glitz and go-go-boys!

As for how he got into the business, Diaz tells Out, “When I was in high school and I was young and I knew I was going to end up in New York City one day, I remember thinking, ‘Wow!’ That’s what it’s like to really be gay and be in the gay city. And you know these underground clubs and this freedom of sexuality—it just seemed so exciting and cool and I wanted to be part of it.” [Read more…]

The Case Against 8 Trailer – The award-winning documentary about overturning the gay marriage ban in California

May 4, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

This summer HBO is making a big play for LGBT kudos with The Normal Heart and The Case Against 8. The latter has already received plenty of praise, including winning the Best Documentary Direction prize at Sundance.

It’s film festival success has ensured it will get a limited cinemas release in the US on June 6th, before it debuts on HBO on June 23rd. Ahead of that comes the trailer.

The film goes deep inside the court cases that sought to overturn California’s ban on same-sex marriage after the ballot measure Proposition 8 was enacted – where voters overturned a law allowing gay people to marry and attempted to enshrine opposite sex marriage in the State’s constitution. The film follows the unlikely team that took the first federal marriage equality lawsuit to the US Supreme Court, which eventually resulted in equal marriage returning to California.

The film is directed by Ben Cotner and Ryan White. [Read more…]

Gaming In Color Trailer – Looking at the lives of LGBTQ gaymers in the new documentary

April 22, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last May we featured the Kickstarter for a documentary all about gay video game players – Gaming In Color. Now the movie is complete and in keeping with the crowdfunding spirit, it’s been released online with viewers able to choose how much to pay – with a $1 minimum and $15 suggested.

Videogames may be perceived to be a straight guy pursuit, but gay people are just as likely to enjoy getting out their controllers as anyone else – even if the games rarely reflect their lives. Indeed you’re as likely to hear about a game removing the ability to include same sex relationships (which had been included by accident) as you are a game that deliberately allows them (and there are even fewer that aren’t trapped in a strict gender binary).

As Gamin In Color director Philip Jones says on the movie’s website, ‘GAMING IN COLOR exists for anyone who believes that the pixelated world can be a better place for everyone, no matter who they are. It is not too uncommon a tale where a bullied, abused youth seeks solace in a video game, only to find that their one hope of sanctuary, their escape into a virtual universe, is plagued with floods of more vitriol and hatred. This exists doubly so for anyone who is a minority, including people of color, women, and members of the LGBTQ community.

‘A lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or otherwise queer gamer has a higher chance of being mistreated in a social game. The power dynamic of a geek society tips against them. Diversive queer themes in storylines and characters are still mostly an anomaly in the mainstream video game industry. However, the gaming community is far more colorful than one may expect. Gaming In Color shows that there is a full spectrum of gamers picking up their controller to play.

‘This feature length documentary explores the queer side of gaming culture and the game industry’s LGBTQ presence. The GaymerX convention that took place in 2013 was a huge step forward for the queer geek community being recognized on a worldwide industry scale. In the same year, more popular mainstream and indie games featured a greater amount of gay and lesbian characters than ever before, helping with visibility and acceptance. The video games universe will only continue to improve and diversify both in its community and industry if we elevate the conversation about inclusion and respecting one another – not in spite of our gay geekiness, but because of it!’

Mala Mala Trailer – Looking at transsexual lives in Puerto Rico

April 21, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The documentary Mala Mala has just premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival (although there are a few other screenings this week), and it’s well worth taking a look at the trailer in the hope the film will get a wider released sometime soon.

Here’s the synopsis from Tribeca: ‘In a celebration of the trans community in Puerto Rico, the fissure between internal and external is an ever-present battle. A unique exploration of self-discovery and activism, featuring a diverse collection of subjects that include LGBTQ advocates, business owners, sex workers, and a boisterous group of drag performers who call themselves The Doll House, Mala Mala portrays a fight for personal and community acceptance paved with triumphant highs and devastating lows.

‘Through riveting cinematography that encapsulates the candy-colored, vivacious personalities as well as their frequently dark personal experiences, directors Antonio Santini and Dan Sickles dynamically present the passion and hardships reflective of this distinctively binary human experience.’

Full The Normal Heart Trailer – Matt Bomer, Jim Parsons, Mark Ruffalo & Taylor Kitsch offer searing drama

April 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

We’ve had a few fairly short trailers for The Normal Heart, but now HBO has released a new one, which suggests this is going to be a dramatic and powerful adaptation of Larry Kramer’s seminal play.

It’s not going to pull any punches in its look at the early days of AIDS in New York, when the disease didn’t have a name and no one knew what it was that was suddenly striking down gay men. Inevitably people are already talking about which Emmys and Golden Globes it might win.

In the film Mark Ruffalo takes on the lead role of Ned Weeks, who in the early 80s is one of the first people to raise an alarm about the new disease that initially was known as ‘Gay Cancer’, but which later was called HIV/AIDS. Big Bang Theory star Jim Parsons will be gay activist Tommy Boatwright, a role he previously took in a 2011 Broadway revival of the play.

Julia Roberts is Emma Brookner, a doctor who is the only one of her peers in New York taking AIDS seriously. Matt Bomer is Felix Turner, a gay fashion journalist who becomes Ned’s lover. Jonathan Groff is playing an early victim of the disease called Craig, whose boyfriend, Taylor Kitsch, starts off as a closeted investment banker but eventually becomes an AIDS activist.

Larry Kramer’s play is considered one of the most important reactions to the early AIDS epidemic, written by someone who has on the front lines of the fight, such as co-founding Gay Men’s Health Crisis and ACT UP. Kramer later wrote a follow-up, The Destiny Of Me.

The rest of the world should get to see The Normal Heart shortly after its US HBO debut on May 25th. [Read more…]

New Yves Saint Laurent Trailer – Things are looking classy for the gay fashion designer

April 18, 2014 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

The film Yves Saint Laurent has already had its UK cinema release, but it doesn’t arrive in in the US until July. As a result it’s got a new trailer which may slightly try to hide the fact it’s all in French, but does acknowledge Laurent was gay.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Paris, 1957. 21 year old Yves is catapulted to international stardom as the successor to Christian Dior who has recently died.  At his first catwalk show he meets Pierre Bergé, who will become his lover and business partner, and begins a relationship that will change his life forever.  Just a few years later however he’s subjected to the public humiliation of being fired.  Refusing to succumb to his critics and self-doubt, he creates the Yves Saint Laurent fashion house and presents the first-ever ‘ready to wear’ collection, shocking the world of couture.

‘YVES SAINT LAURENT follows the designer as he attempts to democratise fashion against the backdrop of Sixties’ liberation, battling his personal demons to build an empire that would be renowned for liberating women all over the world.’

It’s the year for Yves Saint Laurent in film, as beyond this film there another, currently titled Saint Laurent, which stars Gaspard Ulliel (Hannibal), Louis Garrel (The Dreamers), Jérémie Renier (In Bruges) and Lea Seydoux (Blue Is the Warmest Color). That one’s due either towards the end of this year or the beginning on 2015. [Read more…]
