Rufus Hound & Ardal O’Hanlon Join Russell T Davies’ Gay-Themed TV Show Cucumber

July 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Rufus-HoundBack in May, Channel 4 announced the main cast for Queer As Folk creator Russell T Davies’ return to gay-themed television, Cucumber. However it turns out there were a few names missed out, as they’ve now added comedians and actors Rufus Hound and Ardal O’Hanlon, as well as Adjoa Andoh.

Cucumber is about 46-year-old Henry (Vincent Franklin) and his boyfriend Lance (Cyril Nri) whose comfortable and settled existence is shattered after the most disastrous date night in history – involving a threesome, two police cars, and Bony M – and Henry’s new life begins.

Hound joins the eight-part series as Rupert, who’s described as being ‘a man in hot pursuit of Henry – but as their date gets stranger and stranger, the night ends in very unexpected ways.’

O’Hanlon is Brian, who goes out on a date with Cleo, only to find the evening unravelling into old secrets and long-buried truths. Andoh joins as Lance’s sister Marie – a strong, outspoken professional, who thinks her brother’s boyfriend just isn’t good enough for him.

One of the most interesting things about Davies’ project is that it comes in three parts. Cucumber is eight 60-minute instalments that will be shown on Channel 4 in the UK, which then feeds into the eight 30-minute episodes of Banana, about the people orbiting Henry’s world, which will air on E4. If that weren’t enough, there’ll also be the on-demand show Tofu, described a ‘an anarchic and entertaining factual series about sex – from gay to straight, and anything in between – inspired by the dramas each week.’

Banana, which will star the likes of Andrew Hayden-Smith, also has a couple of newcomers – Luke Newberry and Dino Fetscher. Their characters, Josh and Aiden, will first appear in Cucumber before their in-depth stories are detailed in individual episodes of Banana.

The shows are currently shooting in Manchester. No air date has yet been announced.

Take Your First Look At Andrew Rannells As Hedwig (& The Angry Inch)

July 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

andrew-rannells-hedwigAfter a hugely successful, Tony-winning run, which has already seen the production make back its money, Neil Patrick Harris is stepping out of Hedwig & The Angry Inch’s shoes on Broadway next month.

Although originally it was thought Hedwig would only run as long as NPH starred, its success has assured it will continue, and as we reported a few weeks ago, The New Normal & Girls star Andrew Rannells will take over. Now we can get our first glimpse at the actor in the role with the pic above.

It’s certainly not Rannell’s first Broadway gig, as he’s appeared in the likes of Jersey Boys and Hairspray, before scoring a Tony nomination as part of the original cast of The Book Of Mormon.

Andrew will take over the role on August 20th. You can find out more here.

Anna Paquin Hopes Talking About Being Bisexual Can Make Being LGBT Seem More ‘Normal & Mundane’

July 18, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

anna-paquinAlthough most people were supportive when Anna Paquin revealed a few years ago that she is bisexual, there was a firm and vociferous minority who weren’t impressed and were unfraid to show it. Particularly as she was talking about bisexuality (and while in a relationship with a man at the time), the backlash and bitchiness came from both homophobes and bi-phobic gay people.

She’s been talking about that to HuffPost Live about that reaction, saying, “There’s people who are probably going to go to their grave thinking whatever they think about the LGBT community – that’s their problem, not mine. I know there are a lot of hateful people in the world who have strong opinions. You know when you stick your neck out on certain topics that some people are going to go ‘Yay!’ and some people are going to say some of the most vile things that you can imagine.”

Although she’s now married to fellow True Blood actor Stephen Moyer and has two children, she is keen to point out that this doesn’t make her any less bisexual. One of the reasons she’s more than happy to talk about her sexuality is, “That the more normal and mundane and boring this stuff becomes, the better it’s going to be for everyone who is part of our community.”

‘The reason that I feel like it’s important to talk about this is stuff is that the more normal and mundane and boring this stuff becomes, the better it’s going to be for everyone who is part of our community.’ – See more at: http://www.gaystarnews.com/article/anna-paquin-was-not-surprised-hateful-backlash-after-she-came-out-bisexual170714#sthash.iduPoaYL.dpuf

Wentworth Miller Says He Was ‘Feeding A Fantasy’ Before He Came Out As Gay

July 18, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Wentworth-MillerWentworth Miller has been opening up about his decision to come out as a gay man to Details magazine. He says that after revealing his sexuality, “I feel more fully expressed. After Prison Break, I came to grips with the fact that my public persona was in misalignment with how I actually felt. I was out to a handful of people in my twenties, and once I hit 30, I was out to family and friends. But professionally, I was feeding a fantasy. I created this air of ‘We don’t address that thing.'”

When he did come out, there was criticism in some quarters (as there has been recently regarding Ian Thorpe) about the fact that in the past he had vehemently denied he was gay. However he says that at the time, “My face was on billboards, and I thought it was my job to act a certain way. But I think audiences knew to a certain degree.”

Miller also takes the chance to talk about his struggles with serious depression, saying, “I’m part of a group called the ManKind Project. It’s a circle of men I sit in with every week that’s a safe sounding board for whatever’s up for me: good, bad, ugly, really ugly. We know how to respond to someone coming out now—we’ve had that training—but admit you’re sad or that you’ve thought about suicide and people don’t know what to do. With sadness, particularly with men, that conversation is unfamiliar.”

Mommy Trailer – Take a look at queer filmmaker Xavier Dolan’s Cannes prize-winning movie

July 18, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Mommy-xavier-dolanBack in May Canadian wunderkind Xavier Dolan – he’s directed five movies and he’s still only 25 – picked up and Cannes Jury Prize for his latest film, Mommy (although he missed out on the Queer Palm for the best LGBT-themed movie at the festival).

Just to show what a precocious scamp the young man is, Dolan picked up the Queer Palm a couple of years ago for Laurence Anyways, and also won two awards at Cannes for his directorial debut, I Killed My Mother, which he helmed when he was just 18.

Now a first trailer for the movie has arrived, which you can see below.

In Mommy, ‘A widowed single mom finds herself burdened with the full-time custody of her explosive 15-year-old ADHD son. As they try to make ends meet and struggle with their impetuous and unpredictable ménage, the new girl across the street, Kyla, benevolently offers needed support. Together, they find a new sense of balance, and hope is regained.’ [Read more…]

Out Actor Ben Whishaw Set To Replace Colin Firth As The Voice Of Paddington

July 18, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

paddington-preview-pic2When a live action/CG version of the classic character Paddington was announced, Colin Firth was due to voice the bear. He stuck with the project right up until last month, when just five months before release he dropped out, suggesting he didn’t think he could do the bear justice.

Now we know who will replace him, as The Daily Mail says out actor Ben Whishaw has taken over the role.

As it’s just the voice work that’s changing, the movie is still on track to make its November UK release and Christmas US release.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From the producer of Harry Potter and Gravity, Paddington comes to the big screen for the first time in an epic new adventure.

‘Featuring an all-star cast and effects courtesy of award-winning VFX company Framestore, Paddington is THE big family film of Christmas. Voted Best Animated Character at the 2012 British Animation Awards, and adapted from Michael Bond’s beloved books, Paddington follows the comic misadventures of a polite young bear with an endearing talent for comic chaos.

‘Paddington has grown up deep in the Peruvian jungle with his Aunt Lucy who, inspired by a chance encounter with an English explorer, has raised her nephew to dream of an exciting life in London. When an earthquake destroys their home, Aunt Lucy decides to smuggle her young nephew on board a boat bound for England, in search of a better life. Arriving alone at Paddington Station, Paddington soon finds that city life is not all he had imagined – until he meets the kindly Brown family, who find him with a label tied around his neck which reads ‘Please look after this bear. Thank you.’ They offer him a temporary home whilst he searches for the explorer who impressed Aunt Lucy all those years before.

‘But when Paddington catches the eye of a sinister, seductive taxidermist, it isn’t long before his home – and very existence – is under threat.’

You can take a look at the latest trailer – which is obviously minus Whishaw’s voice – here.

Scandal’s Tony Goldwyn Says He Was Advised Against Playing Gay Role In The 90s, But He Ignored It

July 16, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tony-goldwynBack in the early 1990s, Scandal star Tony Goldwyn was an up and comer who looked like he had a chance of breaking big, particularly thanks to his villainous role in Ghost. However the same year that movie was released he took on the role of Jeff Mitchell in The Sum of Us, playing a young gay man in a play about his character’s relationship with his father.

The play started out at the Williamstown Theatre Festival, but after it gained buzz an Off-Broadway transfer was planned. It was then that people started suggesting perhaps Tony shouldn’t go with it.

During a HuffPost Live interview, Goldwyn reflected on the play, saying, “I got all of this advice [saying], ‘Yeah, but if you play a gay character people are going to think you’re gay. This is really going to hurt your career. You have a chance to be a movie star, and you can’t do that.”

He wasn’t deterred though, adding, “I thought to myself… if I don’t have the courage to do something that I believe in because I’m afraid, then I don’t deserve to be an artist. And so that really made the decision for me, that I was going to do it. I realized that it was an act of activism to publicly say ,‘Screw you, this is important to speak about this…’ It was an act of activism even though I was just doing my job.”

It turned out to be a good move for Goldwyn, as he received an Obie Award (which celebrates off-Broadway theatre) for his performance.

He also talks about how before The Sum Of Uf he’d played one of the first characters with AIDS on US network TV in an episode of Designing Women. His character was a gay man who wanted the ladies to design his funeral.

“It was one of my first jobs and the character had AIDS,” he says. “[The show’s creator] Linda Bloodworth-Thomason put it on prime-time television for the first time. It was quite moving and I didn’t realize how powerful that impact would be … To this day people come up to me (and say) ‘You don’t know what impact that had on our community and thank you.'”

Gay Soccer Player Robbie Rogers’ Life May Become A Sitcom

July 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

robbie-rogersProfessional soccer player Robbie Rogers made major headline when he became the first openly gay man to compete in a top North American professional sports league. Since then several other American athletes has followed in his wake, but it’s Roger’s life that’s inspired Universal Television to snap up the rights with the hope of making a sitcom about him.

Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, who produced the last two Oscar telecasts and the likes of Smash and Hairspray, will develop the series through their Storyline Entertainment company. They will also executive produce any show that results from the deal.

Deadline notes, ‘Rogers spent one season at the University of Maryland, helping the college team win an NCAA Championship. He quickly turned pro, joining the Dutch team Heerenveen. He then spent five seasons with Major League Soccer’s Columbus Crew, winning the MLS Cup, and competed in the 2008 Olympics. Following a stint with English team Leeds United, on February 15, 2013, Rogers announced his retirement from professional soccer at age 25 and revealed he was gay. He said he was retiring to avoid the scrutiny from the press and fans, but after speaking at an LGBT youth event two months later, he decided that stepping down is a cowardly thing to do and he should use his platform to be a role model. The next month, he joined the LA Galaxy, becoming the first openly gay man to play in a top North American professional sports league (NBA player Jason Collins, who had come out earlier that year, was a free agent at the time of his announcement).’

It’s early days and Universal snapping up Rogers’ life rights is far from a series being made, but if all goes well we could be seeing it in the autumn of 2015.

Michael Urie Says He Was Urged Not To Reveal He Was Gay During His Ugly Betty Days

July 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

michael-urieBack when Will & Grace was on the air, many were puzzled by the fact that Sean Hayes refused to say whether he was gay or not, despite the fact it was fairly well known that he was and he was playing the most outrageous gay character in TV. A similar thing occurred during the early days of Ugly Betty, as Michael Urie may have been playing an openly gay and rather camp personal assistant, but he was keeping pretty quiet about his own sexuality.

He’s now been talking about the reason for that with Frontiers magazine, saying that when the show debuted in 2006, “This was before Neil Patrick Harris had come out. Even though I was playing an openly gay character, we thought we might want to keep the mystery of what I do behind closed doors.”

He has absolutely no regrets about coming out, which he did towards the end of Ugly Betty’s run when he added the line ‘a member of the LGBT community’ to the website. He adds, “For me, coming out has only aided my career. It might not be good for everyone, but I have gotten to play so many wonderful roles. If I at any point decide not to play gay characters anymore, I would work a lot less. To me, it’s way better to have jobs and get great parts. I got to do [gay roles] in The Temperamentals and Angels in America, and now Buyer and Cellar.”

There are still issues to face though, not least that openly gay actors may face difficulty landing straight roles. “Unfortunately, I think coming out is still something actors known for certain kinds of roles have to think about,” Urie Says, “Audiences sometimes have a better sense of suspension of disbelief than people making the casting decisions do, though I can’t blame them for not taking big risks. Will & Grace, Ugly Betty and Modern Family have helped progress the gay rights movement, and those wouldn’t have been possible without gay people in show business.”

Urie was talking to Frontiers ahead of his one-man-show’s West Coast debut in LA at the Mark Taper Forum, where it runs until August 17th.

Zachary Quinto & Chris Zylka Will Be James Franco’s Former Lovers In Ex-Gay Activist Movie

July 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

zachary-quintoBack in April we reported that James Franco was once more showing off his interest in all things gay by signing up to star in a movie about Michael Glatze, who went from being an outspoken LGBT advocate to an ex-gay activist.

Now he’s got some company in the film – which is going by the simple title Michael – as Variety reports that Zachary Quinto and Chris Zyka have signed up to play two of Glatze’s former lovers, while Emma Roberts will be his girlfriend.

Glatze started out as a young gay man who was passionate about helping LGBT youth, including marching in gay rights rallies and urging young people to celebrate their non-traditional sexualities. He also launched the magazine Young Gay America after working at XY, becoming a leading voice in the gay rights fight.

However in 2004 he had a health scare involving a possible heart defect, which caused him to turn to conservative Christianity. Shortly afterwards he completely renounced everything he had previously stood for and said that he was now ‘ex-gay’. The 38-year-old is currently married to a woman.

Director Justin Kelly comments, “This isn’t just a story about an ‘ex-gay’. It’s actually a very relatable story about the power of belief and the desire to belong.”

Benoit Denizet-Lewis, who wrote the New York Times Magazine article the film is based on adds, “I’m excited that everyone involved in this project is intent on telling a story that captures the full breadth of Michael’s unusual life, from the inspiring gay leader I knew when I was young to the Christian pastor he is today.”
