Glee’s Jane Lynch Reflects On Her Feelings Growing Up Gay: ‘It Was Almost Like I Had A Disease’

May 20, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For a few years now the It Gets Better Project has been encouraging people to make short videos letting young LGBT people know that while it’s tough as a youngster, things do improve. With It Got Better they’re going a little deeper and that includes Jane Lynch, who goes into some depth in a new video, talking about the difficulties she faced growing up gay.

It’s a pretty moving interview and well worth watching, where she touches on plenty of things LGBT people will recognise about the fears in the early stages of realising you aren’t quite like most other people around you – but that things do most definitely improve. Lynch says, ‘There were certain ways you behaved. Boys did certain things, girls did certain things and I did not fit in that.

‘I identified more with boy things. I enjoyed dressing like a boy. Boys stopped wanting to play with me when I got to about 10, I had to fight to play baseball. Every day I didn’t know I was going to be received because I would just hang out until I got to play. Deep down inside I knew that there was something else going on.

‘I finally had a word for it when I was about 14. I had these friends and they said, ‘‘You know on the beach sometimes you’ll see guys walking together holding hands and they’re gay for each other’’ and I thought,  ‘I am the girl version of that’.

‘It was almost like I had a disease, I felt like I had been diagnosed.’

Things have definitely changed for her though, as she adds, ‘Now I live in a world where I don’t give a shit if you have a problem with who I am.’ [Read more…]

Boyfriends Michael Urie & Ryan Spahn Take On A Gay Comedy

May 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

michael-urie-ryan-spahnChicago theatre company About Face Theatre’s Pride Performance Series just got a little bit starrier, as The Advocate reports that Ugly Betty’s Michael Urie and his real-life boyfriend Ryan Spahn will kick things off with a reading of The Last Sunday in June by gay playwright Jonathan Tolins.

They will play ‘Tom and Michael [who] intend to spend the day planning their impending move from the Big Apple to the upstate town of Nyack, but their plans are rerouted as one friend after another drops by to view the parade from the window of their Christopher Street apartment. An afternoon originally designated for things domestic instead turns into a series of conversations about relationships, self-acceptance and the very meaning of what it is to be gay, eventually calling into question Tom and Michael’s relationship itself.’

The play first premiered back in 2003 at Off-Broadway’s Rattlestick Playwrights Theater, but this performance will take place at the Greenhouse Theater in Chicago on June 2nd. You can find out more here.

Urie is actually in the Windy City with his one-man show, Buyer & Cellar (which was also written by Tolins), which runs until June 15 at the Broadway Playhouse.

Hugh Dancy Up For Rupert Everett’s Oscar Wilde Biopic The Happy Prince

May 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hugh-dancyHugh Dancy may spend part of the year being a bit nuts in Hannibal, but now he’s got a plan for the autumn, as ScreenDaily reports that he’s signed on for Rupert Everett’s long-gestating Oscar Wilde biopic, The Happy Prince.

Everett has been planning the movie, which will also serve as his feature directorial debut, since 2012, but now he’s finally pulling it together and hopes to shoot this October.

The film is said to focus on Oscar’s final days. It will see Wilde considering his own failure through his trademark wit and irony. After his imprisonment for homosexuality, Wilde spent his days in self-imposed exile in France. He briefly reunited with his love, Lord Alfred Douglas, but was kept away from his children. Although he published The Ballad Of Reading Gaol, he did very little writing and his health began to fail (partly due to poverty). He died of cerebral meningitis at the age of 46.

ScreenDaily doesn’t say who Dancy will play, but Lord Alfred Douglas would be a smart bet.

Colin Firth, Edward Fox, Emily Watson and Tom Wilkinson are also onboard the movie, which plan a very multi-national shoot taking in Italy, Belgium, France and the UK.

How To Train Your Dragon 2 Will Have An Out Gay Character

May 17, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

gobber-how-to-train-your-dragonVikings are particularly well known for their gayness – although there were undoubtedly a fair few who preferred the same sex – but the world of Vikings is getting a bit gayer this summer, as How To Train Your Dragon 2 will include an out gay character.

It’s someone we’ve met before, as Gobber The Belch, the man who teaches youngsters how to train dragons, is the one who’s coming out.

Apparently it wasn’t in the original script, but Craig Ferguson added a subtle coming out moment as an ad lib. The scene in question sees Gobber watching a husband and wife argue, before saying “This is why I never got married”. He then adds that there’s one more reason.

While Gobber doesn’t say exactly what that reason is, director Dean DeBlois isn’t leaving us in any doubt. He tells E!, “When we were recording Craig Ferguson, I had written the line, ‘This is why I never got married,” and he, as he often does, added it as an ad lib and he said, ‘Yup, Gobber is coming out of the closet. I think that’s a really fun [and] daring move to put in. I love the idea that Gobber is Berk’s resident gay.”

He’s not the first out gay character in a mainstream animated movie, as one of the characters in ParaNorman reveals towards the end that he has a boyfriend, but it’s still relatively rare.

You’ll be able to see for yourself when the film hits cinemas (June 13th in the US and July 3th in the UK).

Tyra Banks To Produce TransAmerica Docuseries About Chicago Trans Women Including Carmen Carrera

May 14, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tyra-banks-carmen-carerra

It’s been revealed that Tyra Banks will be behind the scenes on a new VH1 docuseries about a group of five Chicago trans women, according to THR.

The show, called TransAmerica, will follow the, ‘shared experience of being transgender. The series is described as an earnest look at a group of millennial women — who happen to be transgender — living, loving and building their careers. The series will explore how their sexuality impacts their lives.’

The series will be anchored by Carmen Carrera, who became known to a wider audience as a contestant on the third series of RuPaul’s Drag Race (at that point she still publicly identified as male, but is now a proud trans woman).

Since then she has had huge success as a model and activist, often successfully turning bad situations around. This includes her 2012 appearance on Cake Boss, which she initially agreed to in the hope it would promote equality for transgender people. However it ended up with her being the offensive punchline in a joke where the person she went on a date was later told she was ‘a man’. Carrera wrote eloquently about it on her Facebook page, which garnered a lot of attention, as well forcing apologies and the removal of that part of the Cake Boss episode.

Banks comments on the new series, “TransAmerica is a groundbreaking docuseries that will blow the roof off stereotypes and set the record straight as we experience the lives of these fun, stunning women. I am so happy to be a part of telling their fierce story.”

Other prominent trans people, such as Calpernia Addams, will appear on the show, which is due to air in the US late 2014 or early 2015.

Carrera adds, “Being a woman means everything to me. Before my transition I felt trapped, and now I’ve been set free. Carmen has arrived and I can’t wait to share my story.”

X-Men Director Bryan Singer Reveals That ‘I’m Quite Bisexual’

May 14, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bryan-singer-out1For years we’ve thought that Bryan Singer was gay, but it turns out that was more a category of convenience for the director, as in an Out profile he says that actually he’s more bisexual.

He says that after first seeing his gay status in print for the first time (he never actually had a big ‘coming out’ moment), “I was like, Oh, OK. That was easy. I came out by osmosis.”

However when the magazine follows up by asking whether life is any different in Hollywood for a ‘gay director’, he’s ready to set the record straight. “I’m quite bisexual,” he says. “In the last five years, I’ve had two girlfriends — one for two years, one for eight months.”

That said, “In the end, it’s probably going to be a guy [he ends up with]. I emotionally lean towards male relationships, so I’m happy to say I’m gay, too, if it’s a one-syllable, easy answer.

“If you look at the Kinsey Report, human sexuality is so complex.

“And the reason I’ve never talked about it to the press — until now — is because sexuality is so complex. To have a real conversation about it, you really want to have the person you’re talking to in front of you.

“I’ve never felt the need to be declarative. My sexuality is not what is tearing me up inside.”

The interview took place before the sexual assault lawsuit against Singer erupted, and having backed out of all press for X-Men: Days Of Future Past he has decided not to add any extra comment to Out, beyond the strong denial he made last month.

In related news, Buzzfeed reports that in a previous lawsuit, Singer’s first accuser, Michael F. Egan, denied having ever been to Hawaii – the state he says many of the main abuses he complains of took place (which is important as the lawsuit was filed there due to an extension on the statute of limitations).

In his 2003 sexual abuse suit against Marc Collins-Rector, Chad Shackley and Brock Pierce (the men who owned the estates the events involving Singer are supposed to have taken place at) he was ‘Asked during the deposition whether he had taken any trips outside the continental United States, Egan replied, “Never had any trips outside the continental U.S., no.” Egan then responds to a question specifically clarifying that he had never traveled to Hawaii.’

Egan’s lawyer seems aware of this discrepancy, responding, “I’m not sure how he interpreted the continental United States. I’m not sure what he’s talking about specifically here.”

With Singer’s lawyer saying there’s is documentation proving Singer was in Canada at the time the allegations are supposed to have taken place, and Egan on the record saying he’d never been to Hawaii at that time, it’s becoming an increasingly tough case for the accuser to win. If it can’t be reliably proven both Egan and Singer even went to Hawaii in 1999, then it’s unlikely there’d be a legally permissible case to answer. [Read more…]

Stephen Fry’s The Hippopotamus Getting A Film Adaptation Starring Roger Allam

May 14, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

stephen-fry-the-hippopotamusIt’s been announced at Cannes that a movie version of Stephen Fry’s debut novel The Hippopotamus is coming together, with Roger Allam set to play the lead role, according to Variety.

Allam is most acclaimed as a stage actor who’s won three Olivier Awards (his take on Shakespeare’s Falstaff was lauded as one of the best in recent years), but has also appeared in the likes of V For Vendetta, The Queen, The Woman In Black and various UK TV shows.

Fry’s book was first published in 1994, and while it got a mixed reaction from critics it’s stayed popular with reader.

Allam will play ‘disgraced poet Ted Wallace, who is summoned to his friend’s country manor to investigate a series of unexplained miracles.’ In the novel, Ted’s godson has been ascribed healing powers, but its the uncovering of the Logan family’s back story and sexual proclivities that proves more interesting.

The movie will shoot in the UK this August.

ErOddity(s) Extended Trailer – Things gets strange and very sexy in the gay short film selection

May 13, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last week we posted a short teaser for ErOddity(s), which might have only been 30 seconds long but suggested this was gonna be a bit weird but very, very sexy. Now comes a longer trailer which confirms that and underlines the sexiness!

It’s described as being, ‘”A little bit odd… highly erotic.” In this collection of short, sexy tales, the lives of young men take unexpected turns when they encounter the strange and the supernatural.’

And be warned, as the trailer is a little bit NSFW, so be careful if your boss is around, or you’ll be answering question about why you’re watching twinks humping and being rather strange.

TLA Releasing should be bringing it out later this year. [Read more…]

James Franco, Joseph Gordon-Levitt & Loads More Auction Off Disposable Cameras For MIX NYC Queer Experimental Film Festival

May 12, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

MIX-camera-benefit-2014MIX NYC, New York’s Queer Experiment Film Festival had a great idea with its Naked Eye Celebrity Camera Auction. And now it’s back!

The idea is that celebs donate disposable cameras which ‘are being auctioned “naked,” i.e. with undeveloped negatives included, giving you a unique opportunity to own original, one-of-a-kind photographic artworks, unseen selfies, and real-life photos. Bid and be the first to see—images created just for you by your favorite celebrities.’

While you might expect an experimental queer film festival to only have rather obscure supporters, MIX NYC has pulled together a great mix of ‘actors, musicians, writers, models, photographers, performance artists, directors, porn stars, drag queens, and more’.

Cameras have been given by movie and TV favourites such as James Franco, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Joan Allen, Parker Posey, Modern Family’s Julie Bowen and Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Broadway legend Betty Buckley, Michael Cera, Brady Corbet, and Amy Sedaris. There’s plenty of queer interest with filmmakers like Ira Sachs, Travis Mathews, Gregg Araki and Sebastian Silva, Looking’s O-T Fagbele and Frankie J. Alvarez, singer Jake Shears, and Scandal’s Guillermo Diaz and Dan Bucatinsky.

And if you’re hoping you might get something a bit naughtier on your camera (although you won’t know what pictures were taken until they’re developed), porn folks such as Jake Jaxson, Max Ryder and Colby Keller are also involved. The last of those isn’t too surprising, as anyone who knows anything about him outside porn will be aware Keller’s a little bit of a hipster experimental art lover.

There are some hints as to what will be included on some of the cameras though, as it’s known actress Lea DeLaria’s camera contains behind-the-scenes pics from the new season of Orange is the New Black, while Jesse Tyler Ferguson took his shots on the set of Modern Family.

The signed cameras are available for bidding on eBay now through May 22nd, and you can find out more on the MIX NYC website.
