Feature Version Of Moving Gay Short I Don’t Want to Go Back Alone To Premiere At Berlin Film Festival

December 28, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The-Way-He-Looks-pic1
Almost exactly a year ago we featured the sweet Brazilian gay-themed short Eu Não Quero Voltar Sozinho (I Don’t Want to Go Back Alone). Now a feature-film version has been made, which is one of the first movies to be announced as part of the Panorama 2014 at the Berlin Film Festival.

The short film was first released in 2010 and follows a teenaged blind boy who is trying to work out his feelings for his new friend, Gabriel. However his growing feelings spark jealousy from his female friend. Now Brazilian helmer Daniel Ribiero has expanded the short into a feature called Hoje Eu Quero Voltar Sozinho (The Way He Looks), which features the same actors as the shorter version.

The film will screen in Berlin in February as part of the festival’s Panorama 2014. It will also compete for the Teddy Award, the annual prize given to the best LGBT-themed movie screened as part of that segment of the fest. I Don’t Want to Go Back Alone won numerous awards at both LGBT and general film festivals, so hopefully the feature version can follow suit.

You can see the short film below. [Read more…]

Bollywood Actor Imran Khan Takes On Ignorant Attitudes To Homosexuality To Challenge Indian Homophobia

December 28, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After Indian courts recriminalised gay sex a few weeks ago, many wondered how Bollywood would react. While it’s accepted that most within the industry have a fairly relaxed attitude to all things gay, it wasn’t clear who might step up and speak out – something many think would really help – due to fear over how it might effect their career in the conservative country.

However now Imran Khan hasn’t just said he supports gay rights, he’s even made a video where he tackles ignorant and homophobic attitudes, trying to set the record straight (or gay, rather). Khan, who is straight himself, was well aware that making the vid would bring up questions about his own sexuality, but suggests that if he’s gay because he supports LGBT rights he must also be a dolphin as he supports animal rights.

Khan told the Hindustan Times, ‘I’ve always been involved with gay rights. The scenario in this country is disheartening and depressing. These are basic human rights that people are being denied of – they’re no minority.

‘The idea of this initiative is to show those who do not support homosexuality how ridiculous their thinking is … We will take all the prejudices and amplify them until people realize that what they’re doing is wrong. This has become a cultural and moral issue, but morals are subjective. They are opinions, not facts. Sadly, in this country, laws are based on morality and not legality.’

As things stand, the only way for gay sex to become legal in India again is by the government passing a new law, something they don’t seem to be particularly keen on pursuing at the moment. The hope is that if those like Imran can keep working on hearts and minds, pressure can put put on the lawmakers to act. [Read more…]

First Official Pic Of Benedict Cumberbatch As Gay Codebreaker Alan Turing In The Imitation Game Arrives

December 28, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

imitation-game-pic1
A couple of days ago the Queen official pardoned codebreaker Alan Turing for the ‘crime’ of being gay at a time when it was illegal, which led to a criminal record and chemical castration, and many believe also resulted in his committing suicide. It’s a good time then for the emergence of the first official picture of Benedict Cumberbatch as Turing in the biopic The Imitation Game – indeed the pardon is the reason the film’s Twitter account tweeted the pic.

Turing is a pioneer of modern-day computing who is credited with helping crack the fiendish German codes, such as Enigma, during the Second World War. The film will chronicle the nail-biting race against time by Turing and his brilliant team at Britain’s top-secret code-breaking centre, Bletchley Park. Turing, whose contributions and genius significantly shortened the war, saving thousands of lives, was the eventual victim of an unenlightened British Establishment.

Tragically in the 1950s Turing admitted to the police he was gay while reporting a robbery, believing they would protect him and catch those who’d stolen from him. Instead it was him who found himself in court. After he was convicted he was shunned by the establishment and despite his incredible mind he found himself pushed to the sideline. He committed suicide (although some say it was an accident) not too long afterwards.

Cumberbatch stars alongside Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode, Mark Strong, Rory Kinnear, Charles Dance, Allen Leech and Matthew Beard. The Imitation Game will be out sometime in 2014.

Glee’s Dot-Marie Jones Marries Her Girlfriend

December 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Dot-Marie-Jones-Bridgett-CasteenBack in October, Glee’s Coach Bieste, aka actress Dot-Marie Jones, announced that she was engaged to her girlfriend, Bridgett Casteen, having proposed at Disneyland’s Gay Days. Now they’ve taken the final leap and gotten married in a surprise ceremony.

People magazine reports, ‘Close friends of Jones, 49, and Casteen were invited to a holiday party at the couple’s home. The duo then surprised their guests by informing them that they were actually gathered to witness their nuptials.’

This is Jones’ first marriage, although Casteen has two children from a previous marriage.

We wish then both the best of luck.

New Looking Trailer – Jonathan Groff asks out Russell Tovey while straddling a torpedo in the new gay-themed series

December 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s only a few weeks until US viewers will be able to check HBO’s new gay-themed series, Looking, as it debuts there on January 19th. Now a new trailer for the show has arrived, giving us a fresh look at what could be a very entertaining gay-themed series.

Here’s the official synopsis: ‘Looking’ offers up the unfiltered experiences of three close friends living — and loving — in modern-day San Francisco. Friendship may bind them, but each is at a markedly different point in his journey: Patrick (Jonathan Groff) is the 29-year-old video game designer getting back into the dating world in the wake of his ex’s engagement; aspiring artist Agustín (Frankie J. Alvarez), 31, is questioning the idea of monogamy amid a move to domesticate with his boyfriend; and the group’s oldest member — longtime waiter Dom (Murray Bartlett), 39 — is facing middle age with romantic and professional dreams still unfulfilled.

‘The trio’s stories intertwine and unspool dramatically as they search for happiness and intimacy in an age of unparalleled choices — and rights — for gay men. Also important to the ‘Looking’ mix is the progressive, unpredictable, sexually open culture of the Bay Area, with real San Francisco locations serving as a backdrop for the group’s lives. Rounding out the ‘Looking’ world are a bevy of dynamic gay men including Kevin (Russell Tovey), Lynn (Scott Bakula), and Richie (Raul Castillo), as well as a wide-range of supporting characters like Dom’s roommate Doris (Lauren Weedman), Agustín’s boyfriend Frank (O.T. Fagbenle), and Patrick’s co-worker Owen (Andrew Law).’

After it’s US debut, it should be making its way to other countries during 2014. [Read more…]

Ellen Degeneres Dances Her Way Through Her First Oscars Trailer

December 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Many were very pleased when it was announced that Ellen Degeneres had agreed to host next year’s Oscars. Now she’s offering up her first promo for the event, where she gets suited up, enlists a legion of dancers and says, ‘Here we go!’. The promo was conceived and directed by The Heat helmer Paul Feig.

I’m not entirely sure what it has to do with giving out awards for film achievement, but it’s pretty cool and sets a good tone for an event that will hopefully allow her to show off her mix of humour and congeniality to the fullest.

The Oscars will be handed out on March 2nd, 2014. [Read more…]

Did G.B.F Get An R Rating Just For Being Gay? The Director Thinks So

December 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

gbf-posterMost countries have some sort of classification system for films, but they differ wildly in what things they think should get a movie a higher rating. For many years it’s been noted that in the US, the MPAA treats anything even vaguely gay much more harshly than they do straight things.

That certainly seems true of the teen flick G.B.F. (Gay Best Friend) which was saddled with an ‘R’ rating in the US, despite having no sex, violence or nudity. The movie’s director, Darren Stein, is understandably annoyed that his relatively innocent movie has been lumped in alongside the R rated likes of Saw and Shame.

He says on Facebook, ‘I always thought of G.B.F. as a PG-13 movie, but we were given an R “For Sexual References” while not having a single F-bomb, hint of nudity or violence in the film. Perhaps the ratings box should more accurately read “For Homosexual References” or “Too Many Scenes of Gay Teens Kissing.” I look forward to a world where queer teens can express their humor and desire in a sweet, fun teen film that doesn’t get tagged with a cautionary R.’

Unlike many ratings systems that work from published guidelines saying exactly what will and won’t be accepted at different levels (many of which explicitly state they will treat gay and straight content on an equal footing), the MPAA system is more oblique, relying on the subjective opinions and prejudices of its raters. There’s not even complete openness about who does the rating, other than the MPAA saying it’s groups of parents. It’s also known religious representatives are involved in setting the standards.

This has led to a pretty uneven and discriminatory system, where gay themes are treated much more harshly than straight ones, independent studios tend to get tougher ratings than studios, male nudity is worse than female nudity, and sex is much much worse than violence. It gets away with it as it’s a voluntary, industry led system, which is more interested in preventing the government from imposing a compulsory system that they have no control over than ensuring fairness and parity.

As such, it’s very difficult for gay films as they won’t get any mainstream cinema play without an MPAA rating, but unless it’s a movie that should legitimately be rated R, the likelihood of a restrictive rating will hurt a movie’s commercial chances anyway. For example, G.B.F. is aimed at a teen audience, but as things stand in the US, those under 17 can only go if accompanied by an adult, despite the fact the worst they’ll see in it is some guys kissing. There’s not even any strong bad language.

I Am Divine Trailer – Inside the life of the drag legend

December 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Having opened the London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival, Jeffrey Schwarz’s I Am Divine is heading towards DVD in the US, which gives us a chance to take a peak at the trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘I Am Divine is the story of Divine, aka Harris Glenn Milstead, from his humble beginnings as an overweight, teased Baltimore youth to internationally recognized drag superstar through his collaboration with filmmaker John Waters. Spitting in the face of the status quos of body image, gender identity, sexuality, and preconceived notions of beauty, Divine was the ultimate outsider turned underground royalty. With a completely committed in-your-face style, he blurred the line between performer and personality, and revolutionized pop culture. I Am Divine is a definitive biographical portrait that charts the legendary icon’s emotional complexities and rise to infamy.’

It’s gotten great notices at festivals, so take a look at the trailer above. [Read more…]

Test Trailer – Life in 1980s San Francisco in the new gay-themed flick

December 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Having screened at various film festivals, Test will be hitting DVD in the US sometime next year. And it looks like it’ll be well worth checking out.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘An astutely crafted 1985 period drama set in the gay Mecca of San Francisco, Test lovingly portrays this uniquely exciting and harrowing era as young Frankie (spectacularly lithe real-life dancer Scott Marlowe) navigates gay life in the big city alongside the travails of being an understudy in a modern dance company and his evolving relationship with fellow dancer Todd (the hunky Matthew Risch).

‘As the newest and youngest member of an exciting contemporary dance company Frankie faces a variety of challenges including the homophobic choreographer who commands him to, “dance like a man!” When one of his fellow dancers is injured Frankie must perform in his place. Todd, an established dancer in the same company and the bad-boy to Frankie’s innocent, helps Frankie prepare. It’s the classic test of skill and character. But a very different test looms on the horizon for both of them. As Frankie and Todd’s friendship deepens, they navigate a world full of risk… and hope.’ [Read more…]

Pit Stop Trailer – Take a look at the gay-themed Sundance romance

December 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Pit Stop premiered at Sundance, but it won’t be hitting DVD in the US until January 2014. To get us in the mood for the film’s release, you can take a look at the trailer above.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In this perfectly crafted American drama, openly gay Ernesto (Marcus DeAnda) and closeted Gabe (Bill Heck) grapple with the sad tribulations of being gay in a small, working-class Texas town. This Sundance smash is a truly uplifting love story about male intimacy, the heartache of unsuccessful relationships and the transformative power of love.

‘”I need to get on with my life,” Ernesto pronounces as he kicks out live-in ex-boyfriend Luis. Macho yet sensitive, Ernesto still carries a hopeless torch for his other ex-lover, Martin. Meanwhile, down-to-earth building contractor Gabe seeks solace with his ex-wife and six year-old daughter while pining over the loss of his relationship with Chuck. Trying to find connection amidst formidable loneliness — this is the story of Ernesto and Gabe.

‘Reminiscent of such classic rural gay love stories as Big Eden and Brokeback Mountain — and showcasing equally accomplished performances from its handsome leads — Pit Stop achieves an understated tone of authenticity rarely seen on screen as it shows us a tender, beautiful slice of gay American life.’ [Read more…]
