Upstairs Inferno Trailer – New doc looks at the biggest mass killing of gay people in US history (and seeks funding to do so)

June 25, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Yesterday marked the 40th anniversary of the tragic events at the Upstairs Lounge in New Orleans, which was firebombed on June 24th 1973 and resulted in the death of 32 people. It’s the largest gay mass murder in US history, but despite that, few people know about the tragedy. That’s partly because it went under-reported at the time, and subsequently swept under the carpet.

Thirty-two people were killed and some bodies were never identified because their families were ashamed that the victims were gay. No one was ever charged with the crime. While the Stonewall Riots in New York City only four years earlier united a community, the fire caused many in the New Orleans gay community to stay in the closet.

Camina Entertainment, Inc. has now announced that production has begun on a documentary about the fire, Upstairs Inferno, directed by Robert L. Camina.

The director comments, “It is crucial to acknowledge, preserve and honor our history as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) people. The LGBT dialogue has changed so much in the past few years.  As popular attitudes shift on LGBT issues, we risk losing the stories of the struggles that got us where we are today. It’s our responsibility to honor the memories of those who came before us, including those who died at the Upstairs Lounge. The men and women who experienced this tragedy paved the way for the freedoms enjoyed by the New Orleans LGBT community of today, as well as the overall LGBT movement. Upstairs Inferno intends to honor their forgotten stories.”

An IndieGoGo fundraising campaign was launched last week to help cover production costs for preserving the Upstairs Inferno tragedy on film. People can donate to the film by following the link on www.upstairsinferno.com or directly at http://igg.me/at/UpstairsInferno/x/83651.

Camina’s full length documentary aims to tell the story primarily through emotional interviews with survivors, families of victims and key players involved with the aftermath. Upstairs Inferno will also feature interviews with historians, experts and current leaders of the New Orleans LGBT community.

Camina’s previous documentary, Raid of the Rainbow Lounge, recounted the widely publicised and controversial June 28th, 2009 police raid of a Fort Worth, Texas gay bar that resulted in multiple arrests and serious injuries. Over the past 15 months, the documentary has screened over 35 times, including 29 mainstream and LGBT film festivals across the United States, Mexico and Canada. The film has won several awards including 3 Best Film and 3 Audience Choice Awards.

Dunno Y 2 Teaser – Take a look at the follow-up to the controversial gay-themed Bollywood film

June 25, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Homosexuality it a massively controversial subject in India at the moment, with moves to provide legal and social protections coming up against entrenched and very vocal homophobia in large sections of the population.

One film that tried to combat that was 2010’s Dunno Y…Na Jaane Kyon, one of the few films to emerge from Bollywood with a sensitive gay theme (it’s billed as the first Indian film with two men kissing). The movie won several awards and became a success, despite protests greeting its premiere at the the Kashish Mumbai International Queer Film Festival and many cinemas boycotting the movie.

As Gay Star News points out, one of the actors in the film, Yuvraaj Parashar, was even disowned by his parents for appearing in the movie, saying they did not want to see ‘his face even in death’.

Now a sequel is coming, and thankfully Parashar hasn’t let his experience with the first put him off as he’s returning alongside original cast members Kapil Sharma and Zeenat Aman.

The first film was a drama following a man exploring his gay identity, while the sequel is billed as more of a rom com.

A teaser for the movie has now been released, which you can watch above. The film will debut in 2014. [Read more…]

Before You Know It Trailer – New documentary looks at LGBT pensioners

June 19, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Synopsis: The subjects of Before You Know It are no ordinary senior citizens. They are go-go booted bar-hoppers, love struck activists, troublemaking baton twirlers, late night Internet cruisers, seasoned renegades and bold adventurers. They are also among the estimated 2.4 million lesbian, gay and bisexual Americans over the age of 55 in the United States, many of whom face heightened levels of discrimination, neglect and exclusion. But Before is not a film about cold statistics and gloomy realities, it’s a film about generational trailblazers who have surmounted prejudice and defied expectation to form communities of strength, renewal and camaraderie—whether these communities be affable senior living facilities, lively activist enclaves or wacky queer bars brimming with glittered trinkets and colorful drag queens.

Dennis is a gentle-hearted widower in his 70s who begins exploring his sexual identity and fondness for dressing in women’s clothing under the name “Dee.” Ty is an impassioned LGBT activist who hears nothing but wedding bells once gay marriage passes in New York. Robert “The Mouth” is a feisty bar owner who presses on when his neighborhood institution comes under threat. Born before the Civil Rights era, these men have witnessed unbelievable change in their lifetimes, from the Stonewall Riots and gay liberation, to the HIV/AIDS pandemic and Queer Nation, to gay marriage and Lady Gaga, and have lived to become part of an unprecedented “out” elder generation. Before focuses on the lives of these three gay seniors, but reminds us that while LGBT elders face a specific set of issues, aging and its challenges are universal. An affirmation of life and human resilience told with a refreshing humor and candor, Before confirms that you are never too old to reshape society.

The film is currently screening at film festivals. [Read more…]

Neil Patrick Harris To Star In Broadway Production Of Hedwig & The Angry Inch

June 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

neil-patrick-harrisFans of unusual musicals will know that John Cameron Mitchell’s creation, Hedwig & The Angry Inch, is one of the best out there – and the 2001 film version is simply awesome. Now it’s going back to the stage, with The New York Times reporting that Neil Patrick Harris is set to star.

Hedwig is about an East German immigrant to the US, whose botched sex change operation leaves her with the titular ‘angry inch’. After her relationship with a GI breaks down, she starts to date young hottie Tommy Gnosis, who leaves her behind when he takes her music and becomes a rock star.

The new production is set to premiere in the spring of 2014. While the show started off-Broadway in 1998, this will be the first time it’s been staged in New York’s main theatre district. David Binder has apparently been working on a Broadway version for years, but it’s only now moving forward with NPH in the lead.

John Cameron Mitchell said last year that he was working on a sequel, but there’s been little news on that since last July.

Matthew Goode Joins Benedict Cumberbatch In Alan Turing Biopic

June 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Matthew Goode shirtless

Matthew Goode

I’m sure many out there think Matthew Goode (Watchmen) and Benedict Cumberbatch would make a cute couple, but while it now appears they’ll star alongside one another in a biopic of gay codebreaker Alan Turing, Goode will be staying straight in The Imitation Game.

The Daily Mail has the news that Goode has signed on alongside Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley. Turing is famed for helping the Allies defeat the Germans in World War II by breaking codes and building machines that were the forerunners of modern computers (which were based on his theories). However, in the 1950s he was prosecuted by the British government for being gay.

Turing made the extreme decision to undergo chemical castration instead of going to prison. In 1954 he died from cyanide poisoning, with many believing he killed himself by dosing an apple with the substance (although there are still some who believe it was accidental).

When Knightley signed on, it wasn’t known who she would play, but now it appears she’ll be Joan Clarke, a mathematician and cryptanalyst who worked alongside Turing, and offered to marry him, even though she knew full-well he was gay. He never took her up on the offer. Goode meanwhile will be another code-cracking, Hugh Alexander, who was also a chess master.

Graham Moore wrote the script for The Imitation Game, based on Andrew Hodges’s book. Morten Tyldum (Headhunters) will direct.

(Oh, and if you do need to see Goode going a little gay, watch Brideshead Revisited or A Single Man).

Ronny & I – Bryan Singer produced gay-themed flick, shot on a iPhone, seeks funding

June 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ronny & I certainly has some great backers, including Glee’s Jane Lynch and X-Men director Bryan Singer acting as executive producers. It’s also an interesting idea – a gay-themed, teen road trip short film, all shot on an iPhone 5.

Guy Shalem’s movie is already in the can and has already screened at Cannes – the first film shot on an iPhone to do so – but now it’s seeking $60,000 on IndieGoGo in order to further distribute and promote the movie (and also gain a bit of an online following). And if you give $8,000, you can even own the iPhone it was filmed on as one of the rewards!

The synopsis says, ‘Ronny & I is a true and personal story from director Guy Shalem. An indie film that is meant to inspire and capture the hearts of people. Through love and friendship, both characters discover something unique and more about the world around them.’

Bryan Singer commented, “I have followed Guy’s work for many years and this short film captures an incredible intimate feeling that is difficult to describe. I hope it gets the attention it deserves!”

Jane Lynch adds, “I am excited for everyone to experience this film. I am so proud of Guy’s latest collaboration, which movingly brings the story of his first love to the screen.”

Smash’s Megan Hilty Joins Sean Hayes’ Gay-themed Sitcom Sean Saves The World

June 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Megan-HiltySmash may never have become a hit with viewers, but Megan Hilty nevertheless got a lot of fans as the bitchy, insecure, backstabbing, Ivy, who was determined to be a star and step out of her famous mother’s shadow. Sadly there’ll be no more Smash, but we will get to see more of Hilty, as EW reports that she hay joined the cast of Sean Hayes’ gay-themed sitcom, Sean Saves The World.

In the original pilot, Lindsay Sloane played the role of Hayes’ best friend, Liz, but she was let go in May and when the show airs on NBC in the autumn, Hilty will take over the role. Megan and Sean previously worked together when he guest starred on Smash.

The show features Hayes as a gay dad who’s recently been given full-time care of his daughter, Ellie, and must now raise her as child as a single father. Let’s hope it does better than last year’s gay-themed comedies, Partners and The New Normal, neither of which got past their first season.

FilmNation & Icon Sign Up To Back Elton John Biopic Rocketman

June 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Elton-JohnA few days ago we reported that Tom Hardy was being eyed to play the lead role in the Elton John biopic, Rocketman. While there’s still no news on whether he’ll take the role, the film has moved a little further towards the big screen, as Empire reports that FilmDistrict has signed up to distribute the film in the US. That comes hot on the heels of a Cannes deal, where Icon’s production arm AI agreed to co-finance the movie.

It’s still early days though, so don’t expect it for a while yet. When it does appear though it should follow Elton’s journey from 5-year old musical prodigy who by age 11 won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music, to a young man who rebelled against his strict upbringing, wore outrageous costumes and became a global icon who teamed with songwriter Bernie Taupin to sell more records that just about any musical artist of his era. It will also feature some more fantastical elements and plenty of the singer’s music, in keeping with John’s larger than life personality.

Music video helmer Michael Gracey is set to direct. Hopefully it won’t take too much longer until it goes in front of the cameras.

Strangers By The Lake (‘L’inconnu du Lac) Gay Movie Poster Banned From Parisian Suburbs

June 13, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

stranger-by-the-lake-french-posterUntil recently, it felt like the French were upset if they discovered something wasn’t sexually suggestive, and if there was a bit of homoeroticism thrown in, that was all the better. However in recent months the country has seen massive protests against the new equal marriage laws, with many suggesting that general anti-government feeling is being expressed through homophobia.

Now that anger has spread to the Paris suburbs and posters for L’inconnu du Lac (Stranger by the Lake). While tame by many standards, Versailles & Saint Cloud, to the west of the city, have pulled the posters down, after claims the authorities had been inundated with complaints about the ‘obsenity of the graphics’.

The mayor of St. Cloud commented, “This is not an act of homophobia, sadly, recent events can testify that French people are against gay marriage. This is the reason why we have removed the posters from our streets. In order to keep the population safe, after many complains and concerns for safety of the children of Saint Cloud. My role is to preserve and gather my people, unlike dividing which is what the French president is doing right now.”

That statement certainly suggests general dissatisfaction has bled into anti-gay feeling, as it’s difficult to imagine this sort of thing happening a few months ago.

L’inconnu du Lac stirred up a lot of interest at Cannes, Alain Guiraudie’s film is a mix of very explicit sex, nihilistic thriller and arthouse drama. The Cannes synopsis said, ‘Summertime. A cruising spot for men, tucked away on the shores of a lake. Franck falls in love with Michel. An attractive, potent and lethally dangerous man. Franck knows this, but wants to live out his passion anyway.’ That hints at the plot, which involves Franck witnessing Michel killing someone but telling nobody. He continues to pursue Michel, who holds him at arms length.
