Is Hollywood Still Keen On Killing Off Gay Characters?

June 11, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

behind-the-candelabra-new-slide‘Since Philadelphia there have been, by my count, 257 Academy Award-nominated portrayals of heterosexual characters, and 23 of gay, bisexual or transsexual characters. Of the heterosexual characters, 16.5% (59) die. Of the LGBT characters, 56.5% (13) die. Of the 10 LGBT characters who live, only four get happy endings. That’s four characters in 19 years. Behind the Candelabra won’t be eligible for any Academy Awards due to its cable TV distribution, but it’s keeping Oscar’s kill-the-gays mentality alive and kicking. Or rather, dying and haemorrhaging.’

From James Rawnson’s article ‘Why are gay characters at the top of Hollywood’s kill list?’ in The Guardian.

Lewd & Lascivious Trailer – Before Stonewall, see the birth of the San Francisco gay rights movement

June 11, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The documentary Lewd & Lascivious is having its world premiere at this years’ Frameline, the San Francisco LGBTQ film Festival at 1:30pm on June 22nd, at the Victoria Theater. It certainly looks like an interesting movie, taking a rare look at the gay rights movement before Stonewall (there’s a tendency to think nothing occurred before the 1969 riots).

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Who would have guessed that the dawn of the gay and lesbian civil rights movement in San Francisco was jump-started by straight ministers at a dance? This little-known, yet pivotal event happened the first day of 1965, and it was an occasion like never before. For the first time, all the fledgling “homophile” organizations came together as one to put on a costume ball to publicly reveal their community in a thoroughly respectable, yet overtly political, and queerly fabulous fashion! The twist was, they were rallied by progressive straight ministers who had witnessed, firsthand, the brutal police violence against this community and they were determined to do something about it. So when the SFPD showed up to try and shut the party down, the results were explosively historic!

‘Lewd & Lascivious recovers for today’s audiences the landmark event in American history when just being perceived as homosexual was reason enough to discriminate, and being caught in gay sexual activity was “Lewd and Lascivious Conduct” and could result in years-long prison sentences.

‘“We realized that not understanding homosexuality meant that we didn’t understand sexuality in general,” said the Rev. Ted McIllvenna, one of the instigators of the party, who went on to found the world famous Institute for Advanced Study of Human Sexuality in San Francisco, “We didn’t see this as a ‘gay’ issue, per say, we simply saw it as a human rights issue.” Lewd & Lascivious spotlights in lively interviews a number of famous personalities who speak from eye-witness accounts.

‘“It may have taken seven years to complete the film, but it was worth it to have these important characters in our history tell their stories on camera, especially now that two of them are no longer with us,” says Jallen Rix, Sexologist, Professor, and Director of Lewd & Lascivious.’ [Read more…]

Russian LGBT Film Festival Fined For Being A ‘Foreign Agent’

June 11, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bok-o-bok-festivalWith news that a law banning the ‘promotion of homosexuality’ in Russia has passed its second reading, gay pride rallies being banned and officials saying they’re moving to ban foreign gay couple from adopting Russian babies, the massive country is certainly taking an increasingly homophobic course.

That’s now expanded to the LGBT film festival Bok o Bok (Side by Side), which started out in St. Petersberg but has since expanded to other cities, such as Moscow, Tomsk, Arkhangelsk, Perm and Novosibirsk. It has just been fined 500,000 rubles (about £10,000) after a judge ruled that it had taken donations from overseas, in contravention of a controversial new law.

The law says that any non Government organisation must register if they are in receipt of funding from foreigners. The organisers of Bok o Bok say they didn’t register because they haven’t received any foreign funding, and that the judge completely ignored them when they tried to argue they had not broken any laws.

Many are seeing this is yet more evidence of the Russian government trying to silence any dissent on their crackdown on homosexuality, and that the fine has been levied purely to try and stop the festival.

Russia is a signatory to the European Convention On Human Rights, with the organisation’s court telling them they must move away from stigmatising gay people. However the government has ignored this, and even claimed they have international or European commitment to preventing gay rights abuses.

Gay-Interest Indies Kill Your Darlings & Dallas Buyers Club Get US Release Dates

June 8, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

kill-your-darlings-daniel-radcliffe-dane-dehaanTwo of the biggest gay interest movies of the year, the Daniel Radcliffe starred Kill Your Darlings and Matthew McConaughey’s Dallas Buyers Club, has just been given their US cinema release dates.

Sony Pictures Classics has set Kill Your Darlings for a limited theatrical run starting on October 18th, with plans to roll it out nationally after that. Focus Features meanwhile has given Dallas Buyers Club a prime Oscar slot, with a release planned for December 6th.

Kill Your Darlings charts how a murder helped shape the lives of a group of young men who went on to become the beat generation. Chronicle star DeHaan plays Lucien Carr, the man who introduced Howl writer Allen Ginsberg to the likes of William S. Burroughs (Foster) and Jack Kerouac (Huston).

During these early, hedonistic days, a man called David Kammerer (Michael C. Hall) fell for Carr, with his infatuation becoming increasingly obsessive and unhinged – the gay Ginsberg once discovered Kammerer trying to murder Jack Kerouac’s cat. It eventually resulted in Carr stabbing Kammerer to death him and going to prison for his murder. The violent event is said to have indelibly changed all the people involved and etched its way into the published works of the Beat writers.

Dallas Buyers Club sees McConaughey as real-life Texas electrician Ron Woodroof, an ordinary man who found himself in a life-or-death battle with the medical establishment and pharmaceutical companies. In 1986, Ron was blindsided by being diagnosed as HIV-positive and given 30 days to live.

With the US still internally divided over how to combat the virus and restricting medications, Ron grabbed hold of non-toxic alternative treatments from all over the world by means both legal and illegal. Seeking to avoid government sanctions against selling non-approved medicines and supplements, he established a “buyers club,” which fellow HIV-positive people could join for access to his supplies.

Jennifer Garner, Jared Leto (as a cross-dressing gay man), Steve Zahn, Dallas Robert and Griffin Dunne also star.

“The films in this year’s festival feature a variety of heroes and role models from around the world who fought tenaciously to create a more enlightened society. These movies highlight the humanity, hilarity and honesty of the LGBT community,” said Director of Programming Kristin Pepe (KP).

The Ford Amphitheatre will once again host the Under the Stars series, kicking off with our annual sing-along, featuring the hit musical comedy “Pitch Perfect,” starring Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson. Other screenings include the sexy and provocative “Test“; “Hot Guys with Guns,” a hilarious thriller that marks the debut of actor Doug Spearman (“Noah’s Arc”) as writer-director; the Hitchcock-inspired thriller “Breaking the Girls,” directed by Outfest alum Jamie Babbit and written by Guinevere Turner (“American Psycho”); as well as the Closing Night Gala “G.B.F.” directed by Darren Stein (“Jawbreaker”). This event is part of the Ford Theatres 2013 Summer Season, a multi-disciplinary arts series produced by the Los Angles County Arts Commission in cooperation with Los Angeles County. Rock Hudson’s Wife Recorded His Gay Confession, But Did She Have Her Own Secrets?

June 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

rock-hudson-phyllis-gatesNowadays most people know that Rock Hudson was gay, but back when he was a big star it was a closely guarded secret. Indeed to keep it under wraps he married Phyllis Gates in 1955. Now THR has been given access to a transcript of a coversation where Gates confronted her hubby about his sexuality, which she’d organised to have recorded by private eye Fred Otash.

In the transcript, Gates says, “You told me you saw thousands of butterflies and also snakes. [A therapist] told me in my analysis that butterflies mean femininity and snakes represent that male penis. I’m not condemning you, but it seems that as long as you recognize your problem, you would want to do something about it.”

She also asks about, “your great speed with me, sexually. Are you that fast with boys?”

“Well, it’s a physical conjunction [sic],” replied the then 32-year-old Rock. “Boys don’t fit. So, this is why it lasts longer.”

Phyllis then said, “Everyone knows that you were picking up boys off the street shortly after we were married and have continued to do so, thinking that being married would cover up for you.”

“I have never picked up any boys on the street,” Rock insisted. “I have never picked up any boys in a bar, never. I have never picked up any boys, other than to give them a ride.”

However there are some doubting Gates’ motivations, and that perhaps she didn’t just have the conversation recorded to find out the truth. Indeed many say she knew about Rock’s sexuality and was a lesbian herself.

In her later memoir, ‘My Husband, Rock Hudson’, Gates presented herself as a naive secretary who had no idea about Rock, and was duped into marrying Hudson by gay agent Henry Willson. This may not have been the truth, as Robert Hofler, who wrote a biopic of Willson in 2006, suggested in an interview with the Village Voice, “Phyllis had told various people that marrying Rock ‘would be fun’. She then became addicted to being the wife of a star, and didn’t want the divorce.

“Mark Miller, George Nader (a ’50s actor and close friend of Hudson)’s lover, told me that she had a double standard: Phyllis could play around with women, but Rock had to remain faithful to her. In a way, she was just being pragmatic: she feared that Rock’s exposure would ruin his fame, which was in turn her gravy train.”

The conversation was recorded a few months before Rock and Gates divorced, making some wonder whether she had it taped as a form of blackmail to try and either stay married to Rock, or give herself a bigger slice of his riches.

It’s worth reading the whole of the THR article, which also has other juicy info, such as Otash’ claims he head Marilyn Monroe and JFK having sex, and his involvement in the death of Lana Turner’s boyfriend.

Producer Jerry Weintraub Thinks Behind The Candelabra ‘Is Going To Change The Film Business In America’

June 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jeery-weintraubJerry Weintraub has produced some major hits, including Ocean’s 11 and The Karate Kid, but with his latest movie, the HBO funded Behind The Candelabra (which opens in UK cinemas on June 7th), his hopes don’t just stretch to commercial success, he thinks the movie “is going to change the film business in America”.

A few months ago, director Steven Soberbergh said that despite having Michael Douglas and Matt Damon attached, and a relatively low budget, no major studio would touch it. “They said it was too gay…” said Soderbergh. “This is after Brokeback Mountain by the way. I was stunned. It made no sense to any of us. Nobody would make it, went to everybody in town.”

Weintraub hopes things will change now the movie’s the made. He told JemmOne radio that when they went to the studios, “They didn’t believe in it. Great! So HBO did and HBO, in fact, gave us a much larger audience than we could ever get in the theatres and we were ecstatic about it.”

He then said, “It’s my opinion that this is going to change the film business in America and you’re going to see a lot more things done this way. We had three and a half million homes just on Sunday night (when the film was broadcast on HBO in America) and that’s without the TIVO-ing. When we’re finished, God knows how many millions of people will see this film and that’s what we wanted. That’s why we made it.”

Asked about attitudes concerning homosexuality, Weintraub said: “I think that’s changing. 58 percent of the people in America are for gay marriage now and it should be, in my opinion, legal. There’s nothing wrong with it. People should love who they love and they should be able to walk down the street with who they want to walk down the street with and hold hands with who they want to hold hands with.”

He then talked a bit about being rebuffed by the studios and whether that was homophobic. “I don’t think they wanted to keep anything in the closet. I don’t think it’s about that,” he said. “There are plenty of homosexuals in Hollywood, plenty of homosexuals in the studios etc etc. I think it had to do with the fact that they couldn’t see making a lot of money with the film. They couldn’t realise it. It didn’t click for them. People have their own opinions about things and I respect them and I couldn’t care less. I don’t care what the studios say, I never did. I make things that I want to make.”

Keira Knightley Set To Join Benedict Cumberbatch In Alan Turing Biopic The Imitation Game

June 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Keira-KnightleyEveryone seems to agree making a movie about Alan Turing is a good idea, and the script The Imitation Game has generated huge amounts of buzz, but it’s taken quite a while to get it off the ground. That’s partly due to Leo DiCaprio signing on to star and then leaving the project behind, as well a several directors coming and going.

Now it’s moving forward with Benedict Cumberbatch set to play Turing, and Variety reports Keira Knightley is in talks to join him.

Turing is famed for helping the Allies defeat the Germans in World War II by breaking codes and building machines that were the forerunners of modern computers (which were based on his theories). However, in the 1950s he was prosecuted by the British government for being gay.

Turing made the extreme decision to undergo chemical castration instead of going to prison. In 1954 he died from cyanide poisoning, with many believing he killed himself by dosing an apple with the substance (although there are still some who believe it was accidental).

There’s no news on exactly who Knightley will play. Morten Tyldum (Headhunters) is set to direct from Graham Moore’s script.

Scenes From A Gay Marriage Sequel Announced

June 3, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

matt-riddlehoover
Director Matt Riddlehoover’s Scenes From A Gay Marriage gained a lot of fans when it was released in the US at the end of last year (it certainly didn’t hurt that it was filled with very sexy guys). Now Matt’s been in touch with us to let us know the exciting news that a sequel to the movie is in development.

Riddlehoover and Shane Bartlett of Bring Chase Productions will produce the sequel, tentatively titled Scenes from a Gay Marriage 2. Gay movie luminary Charlie David (Dante’s Cove, Mulligans, Judas Kiss) has joined the cast, with Scenes From A Gay Marriage’s Jared Allman and Thashana McQuiston back to co-star.

Shooting dates have not yet been determined, but it is likely filming will begin before the end of the year. Riddlehoover’s latest, West Hollywood Motel, is to be released later this year through TLAgay.com.
