Debbie Reynolds Recounts Gay Co-star Tab Hunter Trying To Kiss Her

April 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tab-hunter-debbie-reynoldsHe may not be as famous now as some stars of the 1950s, but in his day Tab Hunter was pretty much the definition of the teen idol, making young women swoon around the world with his blond good looks, hunky physique and clean cut style. However what few knew at the time he was starring in the likes of Damn Yankees and What Lola Wants, was that Hunter was also gay, something he didn’t reveal publicly until he wrote about it in his 2005 autobiography.

Now the legendary Debbie Reynolds has been talking about Hunter in her tell-all book, Unsinkable: A Memoir about the so-called Golden Days of Hollywood, saying that he tried to kiss her in the early 1950s, but she pulled away. The duo starred together in the 1961 movie, The Pleasure Of His Company, where they played an engaged couple, but had known each other for many years before then.

In her book, Reynolds says that when Hunter tried to kiss her, ‘I thought it would be like kissing my brother. And I was right. Tab is like my brother. It was the early 1950s; there was no discussion about being gay back then. But I knew that Tab was, and that I felt friendship for him, not romance.’

She adds, ‘The studios used to put us together for premieres and publicity occasions. One night in my parents’ kitchen in Burbank, Tab tried to kiss me goodbye. I told him not to… We always laughed and had fun when we were together. Tab’s a wonderful man who is married to another man now. I’m glad we’ve been friends for so long.’ (Quotes via GayStarNews)

TOM Trailer – Into the world of homoerotic artist Tom Of Finland

April 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Touko Laaksonen, better known as Tom Of Finland, became a bit of a gay legend with his illustrations of often leather-clad men with massive bulges engaging in all manner of homoerotic shenanigans. While his imagery is instantly recognisable to many, not many know anything about the man himself – other than the fact he comes from Finland.

Now a new movie, TOM, is coming to tell us more about the man, and the first trailer has  arrived, which is essentially a lengthy clip from the film, showing Tom trying to get through airport security. It’s not a traditional trailer as the movie hasn’t been filmed yet. Instead the promo is designed to drum up interest and hopefully secure funding and distribution rights.

The plan is to shot TOM next year, for release in 2015. You can find out more about the movie on its Facebook page.

And if you’re interested in Tom Of Finland, take a look at his Wikipedia entry. [Read more…]

Julian Sands Heads For LGBT Themed Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks

April 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Julian-SandsThe cast for Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks has been rounded out, with Variety reporting that Julian Sands has signed up for the movie, joining Cheyenne Jackson, Gena Rowlands, Jacki Weaver, Rita Moreno, Kathleen Rose Perkins, Anthony Zerbe and Simon Miller.

Rowlands is set to star as Lily Harrison, a Florida retiree who hires high-spirited dance instructor Michael Minetti (Jackson) to give her private dance lessons. The unlikely pair soon develop a friendship apart from dance.’ The relationship starts with lies – she pretending her husband is still alive, him pretending he isn’t gay and saying he’s married to a woman – but soon deepens into something more, with both coming to understand things about the other beyond the stereotypes.

Sands will be the owner of the dance studio Jackson’s character works out of.

The movie is based on Richard Alfieri’s adaptation of his play of the same name, with Arthur Allan Seidelman (he also helmed several stage versions). Shooting began Monday in Budapest.

Sigourney Weaver ‘Touched and Thrilled’ To Be A Gay Geek Icon

April 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Sigourney-WeaverGeeks can most certainly be LGBT, and there are a few groups out there brining together the geeky and gay, including Geeks OUT, which most recently held an exhibition of art that celebrated, ‘Sigourney Weaver as a fabulous sci-fi icon and a staunch ally to LGBT fans’.

The artworks were then auctioned off the benefit the group. Unfortunately Weaver’s Broadway commitments (she’s starring in Vanya and Sonia and Masha Spike) meant she couldn’t attend herself, but she did send a message, saying how delighted she is with all things gay and geeky. Here’s the message:

Dear friends and fellow geeks at Geeks OUT,
I send you greetings from Broadway where I am performing in a new comedy by Christopher Durang. I am extremely touched and thrilled to be honored by Geeks OUT as a queer geek icon and muse. It means so much to me that my work has been relevant and encouraging to the LGBT community. I support each and every one of you to be exactly and gloriously who you are and all you can be. The planet needs your individuality and talent and power to make it a more humane and respectful and fantastic place, where everyone is valued and celebrated equally. So rock on and geek out, my friends. Have a wonderful time tonight. Thank you again for this awesome honor, thanks very much to Jono Jarrett for getting in touch and going forward, and please come see us geeks on Broadway!

Matt Damon & Michael Douglas Sparkle In Behind The Candelabra Trailer

April 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We’ve had a short promo for HBO’s Liberace biopic, Behind The Candelabra, and now it’s been followed by a full trailer, giving us our best look yet as Michael Douglas and the flamboyant pianist and Matt Damon as he is lover, Scottie Thorson.

Douglas look remarkably like Liberace and Damon hasn’t looked as hot in a long time. Indeed, you might want to repeat the bit where he gets out of a pool a few times.

Here’s the official synopsis: ‘Before Elvis, before Elton John, Madonna and Lady Gaga, there was Liberace: virtuoso pianist, outrageous entertainer and flamboyant star of stage and television. A name synonymous with showmanship, extravagance and candelabras, he was a world renowned performer with a flair that endeared him to his audiences and created a loyal fan base spanning his 40-year career. Liberace lived lavishly and embraced a lifestyle of excess both on and off stage. In summer 1977, handsome young stranger Scott Thorson walked into his dressing room and, despite their age difference and seemingly different worlds, the two embarked on a secretive five-year love affair. BEHIND THE CANDELABRA takes a behind-the-scenes look at their tempestuous relationship — from their first meeting backstage at the Las Vegas Hilton to their bitter and public break-up.’

It’ll screen on HBO in the US on May 27th and will hopefully reach the rest of the world shortly afterwards. [Read more…]

Petunia Trailer – A great cast deal with family issues including a polyamorous Michael Urie

April 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac 2 Comments

Director Ash Christian certainly got a great cast of actors together for Petunia, including Eddie Kaye Thomas, Thora Birch, David Rasche, Christine Lahti, Brittany Snow, Michael Urie and relative newcomer Tobias Segal.

They’re all mixed up in a family drama that includes both gay and straight characters coming to terms with their complicated lives.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘An off beat family of New Yorkers must come to terms with their own misgivings about life, relationships and the sheer unpredictability of love itself. Petunia weaves together the lives of brothers Charlie (Tobias Segal), Adrian and Michael (Eddie Kaye Thomas) as they unlearn everything their psychoanalyst parents have taught them. While Michael’s cynical wife Vivian (Thora Birch) discovers she is pregnant, the family is also changing. Charlie’s would be boyfriend George (Michael Urie) is in a polyamorous relationship with fitness fanatic Robin (Brittany Snow) and Adrian has developed a unrelenting sex addiction. Meddling parents Felicia (Christine Lahti) and Percy (David Rasche) must decide whether to reignite the spark in their relationship or start all over again. Petunia is a film about a dysfunctional family unit on the verge of a nervous breakdown. This is the story of how they pick up the pieces.’

It looks like it could be a lot of fun. Wolfe Video will be releasing the film in the US later this year. It’s currently playing at film festivals. [Read more…]

Cloudburst Trailer – Olympia Dukakis & Brenda Fricker play aging lesbians

April 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Cloudburst opened the 2012 London Lesbian & Gay Festival, but it’s only now that it’s heading towards release outside the LGBT film festival circuit, with Wolfe Video releasing a trailer for its upcoming US release (we don’t have a specific date yet, unfortunately).

The film stars a pair of Oscar winners – Olympia Dukakis (Moonstruck) and Brenda Fricker (My Left Foot) – as septuagenarian lesbian lovers Stella and Dottie. After they break out of their nursing home, the duo flee their hometown in Maine and head to Canada to get married, picking up an ally along the way in this most unlikely of road movies.

It’s an interesting subject, as the older generation of gay people has largely been ignored, with rare exceptions such as Beginners. However as those who came of age after Stonewall start to reach pensionable age, it may well be a subject we see addressed more and more. [Read more…]

Eastsiders LGBT Web Series Gets Picked Up By Logo TV

April 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac 2 Comments

eastsiders-slide
It’s fast seeming that the internet is where it’s at to find find interesting gay projects, with a number of well-written and made web series springing up. Last December the first episode of Eastsiders appeared online, followed swiftly by a Kickstarter to get more of the series made.

The TV networks now keep a close eye of the web and so LGBT-focussed Logo TV has now picked Eastsiders and will air the first three episodes online starting April 23rd. (Incidentally, because of this, the first episode that was previously available on Youtube has now been made private, unfortunately).

Logo has previously snapped up web series such as Hunting Season and Vicky & Lysander.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘What happens after the world ends? Written and directed by award winning playwright Kit Williamson, “EastSiders” explores the aftermath of infidelity on a gay couple in Silverlake. When Cal (Kit Williamson) finds out Thom (Van Hansis) has been cheating on him with Jeremy (Matthew McKelligon), their relationship is turned upside down. Will the lies tear them apart or are they just stubborn enough to stay together forever?

‘Drunken outbursts and double standards abound in this dark comedy about the sad and funny messes we make out of our lives. Cal’s best friend Kathy (Constance Wu) is always there for him with a bottle of whiskey in her purse, but she has her own problems with her nice guy boyfriend Ian (John Halbach), even if they’re all in her head. Stephen Guarino guest stars as a party promoter throwing one last bash before the apocalypse.’

Take a look at an update about the series from As The World Turns actor Van Hansis, who tells us a little bit more about the show.

New Stills From Scenes From A Gay Marriage Director’s New Film, West Hollywood Motel

April 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Andrew Callahan in West Hollywood Motel

Andrew Callahan in West Hollywood Motel

Director Matt Riddlehoover had great success with Scenes From A Gay Marriage, which remains a best-seller on DVD in the States. Now he’s readying his follow-up comedy, West Hollywood Motel, and we’ve got three new images from the movie for you to enjoy.

It’s described as “intersecting tales about people who have checked into the same motel room”. The film covers a range of people – gay and straight – playing off of the fact that the majority of the West Hollywood’s population is made up of gay or bisexual men, and that it is also one of the only places in the US where it is illegal to discriminate on the basis of gender identity. The ensemble cast includes Andrew Callahan, Amy Kelly, Phil Leirness, Jared Allman, and Luis A. Gudino (all pictured).

The film is slated for release later this year. Until then, enjoy the new pics.

Bridegrooms Trailer – Take a look at the moving LGBT documentary

April 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Early last year the heartbreaking documentary short, It Could Happen To You, went viral and was watched by millions. It told the story of Shane Bitney Crone and his boyfriend Tom. When tom tragically died, Shane found himself completely frozen out by his boyfriend’s homophobic family, with no recourse as his rights were not recognised.

A couple of months later plans were announced to turn the short into a feature length documentary. At the time it became to highest funded Kickstarter project in history, with over $384,000 pledged to ensure the film became a reality.

Now the trailer for the final documentary, Bridegroom, has been released, which you can watch above. It certainly looks like it’s going to be a moving, emotive film that’ll be well worth watching. Bridegroom will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Shane Bitney Crone commented to Towleroad, “Tom and I were not perfect, but we were perfect for each other. Our love was undeniable, and when I lost him, I lost a large part of myself. No matter how hard Tom’s family tries; they can never erase the love that Tom and I had for each other, and the life that we started together. If Tom and I were legally married, I would never have been so easily disregarded, and knowing that Tom would have wanted his family to embrace me, makes me more determined to fight for this cause. I will never be able to hold Tom again, or tell him that I love him, but this movie may convince many opponents to reconsider their stance on marriage equality, not for me or for Tom, but for love.” [Read more…]
