GLAAD Alters Title To Include Trans Inclusive Focus

March 25, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation – GLAAD – was set up in the 1980s at a time when AIDS saw an unprecedented number of attacks on the same-sex community. Over the years it’s also advocated on behalf of transgender people, but the title hasn’t reflected that – instead just keeping gay and lesbian in the name.

Now the organisation has decided to do something about that, keeping the name GLAAD, but deciding it will no longer be an acronym, instead being simply known as ‘GLAAD, the LGBT media advocacy organisation’.

The shift was announced on Sunday on MSNBC’s Melissa Harris-Perry, with the group saying it will both help reflect the organisation’s commitment to the trans community and LGBT allies, as well as the diversity of the LGBT community.

Actor and GLAAD spokesperson Wilson Cruz commented, “It is a natural progression that reflects the work GLAAD’s staff is already leading. We respect and honor the full name that the organization was founded with, but GLAAD’s work has expanded beyond fighting defamation to changing the culture. Our commitment to marriage equality, employment nondiscrimination, and other LGBT issues is stronger than ever, and now our name reflects our work on transgender issues as well as our work with allies.”

Sony Pictures Head Amy Pascal Says Hollywood Must ‘Do Better’ About Gay Slurs

March 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

amy-pascalHollywood films using the ‘n’ word or any other strong racial epithet are relatively rare (although not unheard of – just look at Quentin Tarantino’s output), but you don’t have to go too far to find one where ‘fag’, ‘homo’ or some other anti-gay term is thrown out. Now Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures, has been talking out about it, and has admitted Hollywood must do better.

THR reports that at an event at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel, aiming to raise funds for the LA Gay and Lesbian Center, and was clear that, “We still have a long, long way to go.”

Pascal added, “Now, there is not much any of us can do about what people hear from families and friends, but there is a whole hell of a lot we can do about what people see… How about next time, when any of us are reading a script and it says words like ‘fag’, or ‘faggot’, ‘homo’, ‘dyke’, take a pencil and just cross it out. Just don’t do it. We can do better and we will do better. We have to.”

However she realises that it’s not just offensive words, it’s how homosexuality is depicted. ”How many times have you heard a character imply to another that the worst thing about going to prison isn’t being locked up for the rest of your life, it’s the homosexuality? And old stereotypes still exist. The most benign stereotypes would have a gay kid believe that they will end up being the asexual, witty best friend of the pretty girl, or a drag queen, or a swishy hairdresser. The list goes on.”

Hopefully this is more than just air, and Pascal really will push for more positive depictions of gay characters in Hollywood. While there’s been improvement on TV, mainstream movies still lag behind badly, either completely editing gay people out of existence, or depicting them in dubious ways at best.

Susan Sarandon Joins Melissa McCarthy’s Tammy, With Kathy Bates Going Lesbian

March 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

susan-sarandonMelissa McCarthy is set to make her directorial debut this year with Tammy, alongside hubby Ben Falcone, working from a script they wrote together. Now she’s started to pull the cast together, with THR saying Susan Sarandon and Kathy Bates are in talks to join the film, with Deadline adding that Mark Duplass has also signed up.

The screenplay is about a woman (McCarthy) who loses her job at a fast food restaurant and then finds out her husband is cheating on her. She goes on a road trip with her foul-mouthed, hard-drinking grandmother (Sarandon) to escape the problems in her life.

Shirley MacLaine was apparently in talks for the grandmother role, but that didn’t work out, and so Sarandon is on the process of stepping in. Kathy Bates meanwhile will be ‘the grandmother’s lesbian friend who saves the duo from some bad spots’. Duplass meanwhile is a man who McCarthy meets and develops a strange relationship with during the trip.

The film will shoot this spring.

L-Word Co-Creator Plans Middle-America LGBT Documentary

March 20, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ilene-chaikenIt’s undoubtedly true that most LGBT documentaries and entertainment concentrates on people living in big cities. However L Word co-creator Ilene Chaiken wants to address that, as nearly 10 years after the show brought lesbian lives into people’s living rooms, she’s hoping to make a documentary series about LGBT people living in Middle America.

The area between the East and West coasts of the US is often seen as a hinterland of bigotry, devoid of gay people or any sort of LGBT culture.

Chaiken wants to address that, telling THR, “Being gay is not a monolithic proposition. We’ve lived so many different lives in so many different communities, with so many different experiences. I want to tell stories that are specific to being gay but reflect a lot of different realities of gay life.

“We were telling one story in ‘The Real L Word’ in LA and Brooklyn with a group of women we were following. This is a very different story, and it didn’t really belong in that story.”

She adds that “It’s going to be quite different in tone and ambition [to The Real L Word]. I have been feeling this for a while and [producers] Magical Elves and Showtime felt compelled to look in this direction.”

It will be, “Less glamorous and a story about different facets of gayness. We all know, especially those of us who are gay, that there are challenges and hardships and that there are a lot of places in the world in this country where it isn’t easy to be a lesbian or to be gay. That part of the story gets touched upon in The L Word and in three seasons of The Real L Word in Los Angeles and New York but we’re really going to look at what that is and explore it now in a more unvarnished way.”

The Making Of Rock Hudson Film About The Star’s Gay Life Planned

March 20, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

rock-hudsonAfter his death, the fact he was gay was revealed by Tales From The City author Armistead Maupin. Some thought the secret should have stayed buried, but over the year it’s helped people reassess the star and his roles, in light of what’s now known about his personal life.

Now screenwriter Tyler Ruggeri is planning to bring that story to a larger audience, as he’s sold his script, The Making Of Rock Hudson, to Trudie Styler (the wife of Sting) and Celine Rattray of Maven Pictures, according to Deadline.

The film will be told through the eyes of Henry Willson, the agent who discovered Hudson and turned him from a shy kid to the a-list star of Giant and Pillow Talk, all of which had to be done by hiding his sexuality. At the time, anyone publicly known Rock was gay would have destroyed his career. As Deadline notes, ‘When the showbiz tabloid Confidential threatened to publish rumors that Hudson was leading a secret life in 1955, Willson arranged for Hudson to marry his secretary, Phyllis Gates. They did a good job of keeping Hudson’s private life private right up until he died in 1985, when he became the first major movie star to pass away from complications relating to AIDS.’

“Tyler’s screenplay perfectly captures the daunting, and in many ways timeless, struggle between public and private persona,” said Rattray and Styler. “It was a time when a leading man’s career could be destroyed if the vice squads or the tabloids got the wrong impression.”

It’s certainly an interesting subject, especially as Rock is known to have become an expert at living a gay, hidden private life – including weekend parties attended by dozens of young men – all while hiding this from the public.

At the moment no director is attached.

Elton John Biopic, Rocketman, Gets Director Michael Gracey

March 19, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Elton-JohnFor the last year or so, Elton John and David Furnish have been working a biopic of the music star called Rocketman. Lee Hall (Billy Elliot) has been working on the script, and now they’ve found a director, in the form of commercials and FX man Michael Gracey.

Deadline reports that the film, ‘follows John’s journey from 5-year old musical prodigy who by age 11 won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music, to a young man who rebelled against his strict upbringing, wore outrageous costumes and became a global icon who teamed with songwriter Bernie Taupin to sell more records that just about any musical artist of his era’. It’s previously been said it will also include some more fantastical elements and plenty of the singer’s music, in keeping with John’s larger than life personality.

It will be Gracey’s first film as a director (unless he makes The Greatest Showman On Earth with Hugh Jackman first, which he’s also attached to), although he’s well known for both his work in visual effects and for his commercials, which often feature elaborate dance routines, making him a good choice for Rocketman.

The director commented “Everyone knows and loves Elton John’s music, but the true story of his life is so incredible that it can only be described as a fantasy. His journey from impossible dreamer to stardom and uncontrollable excess is something only a musical film can capture, and I’m so excited to be the one to tell his story.”

Casting is already underway to find someone to play Elton has a child (when he was simply Reg Dwight), and there’s no word on who might play him as an adult. Previous rumours suggested Justin Timberlake might take the role, but that was revealed to be more speculation than fact.

BFI Screens ‘First’ UK Gay TV Drama, South, At The London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival

March 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

south-gay-drama-bfiYou wouldn’t have thought that British TV would be making gay-themed entertainment in 1959, but a recently uncovered drama found in the BFI vaults shows that they were. South, which screened over the weekend at the London Lesbian And Gay Film Festival, is being hailed as TV’s first gay drama.

According to The Guardian, ‘It involves a dashing Polish army lieutenant exiled in the US deep south as civil war approaches and the question of who he really loves: the plantation owner’s angry niece, Miss Regina, or the tall, blond, rugged officer who arrives suddenly – a handsome man called Eric MacClure.’

South, adapted by Gerald Savory from an original play by Julien Green, first screened on ITV on November 24th, 1959. Generic Cialis vs brand cialis by cost at MedzCanada and how to take Tadalafil. It’s a surprise it was made, as while it was two years after the Wolfenden Report, gay acts weren’t decriminalised until 1967. It’s also two years before Victim, the first film to use the word homosexual and to take a somewhat sympathetic approach to gay people.

It’s amazing South survived, as at the time nearly all TV was performed live and shows weren’t routinely recorded (even the first episodes of Coronation Street were performed live and many have been lost forever). Even what’s held by the BFI isn’t always fully known, and it took a bit of detective work to rediscover South.

Archivists searching through old copies of the Radio Times noticed a reference to the lead character in south not being quite right. They also saw that the character was played by Peter Wyngarde, who they knew at the time was in a long-term relationship with Alan Bates (although this was a closely guarded secret from the public). As a result they looked South out and discovered it was implicitly about being gay.

BFI curator Simon McCallum says, “I think you have to give Wyngarde a massive pat on the back in terms of the bravery in taking this role. There were quite bad reactions from some of the press.”

This included reviews in the Daily Sketch, which read, “I do NOT see anything attractive in the agonies and ecstasies of a pervert, especially in close-up in my living room. This is not prudishness. There are some indecencies in life that are best left covered up.”

Following the LLGFF screenings, South will become available to watch at the BFI’s mediatheques in Glasgow, Newcastle, Wrexham, Cambridge, Derby and London.

Ian McKellen To Officiate At Patrick Stewart’s Wedding

March 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ian-mckellenWhile Sir Ian McKellen is one of the world’s best known actors, he’s revealed he’s got a bit of a sideline officiating at wedding. He now said that he’ll be the one marrying Patrick Stewart and his fiancée, Sunny Ozell. Who would have though Professor X would let Magneto marry him?

Ian revealed the news on The Jonathan Ross Show, saying, ”I’m going to marry Patrick. I am going to officiate at his wedding.”

Unsurprisingly he was then asked how he it was legal for him to officiate the ceremony.: “I don’t know,” he said. “But in Massachusetts, in the middle of America somewhere, you get a friend along, and I read out the words, and Sunny [Ozell] and Patrick will then be married… I’ve done it once before with two guys having a civil partnership. I was crying my eyes out.”

Massachusetts has laws which say that for a $25 dollar feel, the Governor can give someone one-time permission to officiate at a wedding. From what McKellen has said, it’s likely someone else will be the official, while he reads the words.

McKellen was then asked: “What do you wear when you officiate at a wedding?”, saying that the last time, he wore “A white gown which I bought in India. You mustn’t upstage the bride.”

Tom Hooper May Take On Sacha Baron Cohen’s Freddie Mercury Biopic

March 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tom-hooperSacha Baron Cohen may have only had a small role in Les Miserables, but director Tom Hooper must have liked working with him, as Deadline reports that they may reunite for a biopic of Freddie Mercury. Baron Cohen’s been attached to the movie for quite a long time, but the film has had a bit of revolving door of directors.

Hooper hasn’t officially signed on to direct yet, but he is apparently seriously considering it.

Peter Morgan’s script will deal with the star’s rise to fame, leading up to the classic performance at 1985’s Live Aid, and won’t cover his death from AIDS, which helped remove a lot of the stigma of the disease. It’s not known either how frank it will be about his sexuality (although you’d have to presume it won’t sweep it under the carpet) The surviving members of Queen are all involved in the movie, ensuring the use of the band’s classic songs.

Queen themselves are involved in the film having licensed their most famous tracks, including Bohemian Rhapsody, We Are The Champions, We Will Rock you and Another One Bites The Dust for the movie. We’ll have to see whether Hooper does end up making the film.

Crowd-funding Sought For Doc About Gay Man Who Set Himself On Fire At The Vatican

March 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Self-immolation (setting yourself on fire) can be a powerful political act – such as with buddhist monks during the Vietnam era, or the Arab Spring starting with Mohamed Bouazizi setting himself alight – however Alfredo Ormando’s actions have largely been forgotten. Now a documentary is trying to set that right, and is hoping to raise  $50,000 via KickStarter to tell the story.

The film, Alfredo’s Fire, is ‘a powerful and timely documentary that tells the untold story of Alfredo Ormando, a gay Italian writer who set himself on fire at the Vatican to protest the Church’s condemnation of homosexuality.

‘Shaped by Alfredo’s own writings, as well as rich cinematography, and provocative interviews with his family, friends and intimate companions, the film reveals Alfredo’s longing and struggle to reconcile his faith and sexuality.’

Alfredo set himself on fire in Saint Peter’s Square in Rome on 13th January 1998, and died 11 days later in hospital.

The hope is to raise the money and have the film ready for Italy’s National Pride this June, which this year is in Alfredo’s hometown of Palermo.

Head over to KickStarter to find out more.
