Sir Stirling Moss is a racing legend of the 1950s and early 1960s, who’s often referred to as “the greatest driver never to win the World Championship”, but it appears he’s not a big fan of the gays.
The Mirror reports that at an event at the Motor Sport Hall of Fame, he responded to the fact Chris Hemsworth is due to play James Hunt in Ron Howard’s F1 movie Rush, that if there’s a biopic about him, “I hope the actor would be masculine – not a poofter or anything like that. Perhaps the guy from Skyfall.”
Some Gay rights campaigners have understandably called the ex-driver’s words “offensive” and “homophobic”.
Moss has since tried to defend himself, although in many eyes will have made things worse. He added, “I think it would be difficult for someone of the other persuasion, who is homosexual, to take on the part, as I have spent my life driving cars and chasing girls.
“I’m sorry I’ve caused offence, but I’m disappointed anyone could be so narrow-minded as to take offence. It was not meant to cause any.
“I have homosexual friends. There’s nothing wrong with it. It’s the way things are nowadays.”
Perhaps he needs some sensitivity training, as he seems to still be stuck in the mindset that all gay people mince around like Kenneth Williams on acid, and that no gay actor could possibly convincingly play a straight man (even if they were quite camp in real life). What say we put together a Kickstarter to fund a Stirling Moss biopic starring RuPaul, just to see the expression on the driver’s face when he finds out?
