Sir Stirling Moss Doesn’t Want A ‘Poofter’ Playing Him In A Biopic

March 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

stirling-mossSir Stirling Moss is a racing legend of the 1950s and early 1960s, who’s often referred to as “the greatest driver never to win the World Championship”, but it appears he’s not a big fan of the gays.

The Mirror reports that at an event at the Motor Sport Hall of Fame, he responded to the fact Chris Hemsworth is due to play James Hunt in Ron Howard’s F1 movie Rush, that if there’s a biopic about him, “I hope the actor would be masculine – not a poofter or anything like that. Perhaps the guy from Skyfall.”

Some Gay rights campaigners have understandably called the ex-driver’s words “offensive” and “homophobic”.

Moss has since tried to defend himself, although in many eyes will have made things worse. He added, “I think it would be difficult for someone of the other persuasion, who is homosexual, to take on the part, as I have spent my life driving cars and chasing girls.

“I’m sorry I’ve caused offence, but I’m disappointed anyone could be so narrow-minded as to take offence. It was not meant to cause any.

“I have homosexual friends. There’s nothing wrong with it. It’s the way things are nowadays.”

Perhaps he needs some sensitivity training, as he seems to still be stuck in the mindset that all gay people mince around like Kenneth Williams on acid, and that no gay actor could possibly convincingly play a straight man (even if they were quite camp in real life). What say we put together a Kickstarter to fund a Stirling Moss biopic starring RuPaul, just to see the expression on the driver’s face when he finds out?

Censorhip Themed James Franco Flick Replaces Banned Movie At Melbourne Queer Film Festival

March 13, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

i-want-your-love-slideIf you’ve been following the site, you’ll know there’s been a bit of controversy over in Australia due to the The Australian Classification Board banning Travis Mathews’ gay-themed film I Want Your Love, which had been due to play Aussie queer film festivals.

However in a rather neat turn, the Melbourne Queer Film Festival has replaced I Want Your Love with Mathews’ recent collaboration with James Franco, Interior Leather Bar. It’s rather apt, as the movie partly deals with the fact 40 minutes of gay S&M footage are believed to have been cut from the 1980 Al Pacino movie Cruising, due to fears it would be too strong for audiences. Interior Leather Bar recreates that footage, and gets a bit meta with Franco and others discussing how people react to seeing gay sex on screen.

Franco also recently released a Youtube video calling on the Aussie censors to rethink their decision on I Want Your Love.

‘It’s a huge coup for us to be able to screen James and Travis’ brand new film. Given the recent banning of I Want your Love, a film about censorship couldn’t be more topical,’ said Melbourne Queer Film Festival director Lisa Daniel.

I Want Your Love was banned due to the Aussie Classification Board feeling it presented explicit sex without narrative context. However anyone who’s seen the film will realise that while no one says ‘This is why we’re having sex’, there’s plenty of context, with the movie exploring how sex works as part of gay life – as glue for a relationship, brief release, emotional support, etc. Indeed it’s pretty much all context.

My personal suspicion is that the Australian board was blinded by the fact I Want Your Love was co-produced by a company mainly known for porn – Naked Sword – and they may also be operating a double standard when it comes to gay sex, as several movies with real straight sex have gotten past their scrutiny (and even a documentary with men having sex with donkeys).

Interior Leather Bar, screens on Monday March 25th at the Melbourne Queer Film Festival.

Cheyenne Jackson Replaces Sean Hayes In A New Movie

March 13, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Cheyenne JacksonIt not very often that one openly gay actor gets replaced by another one in a movie, but that’s what’s happened with the indie 6 Dance Lessons in 6 Weeks. Will & Grace’s Sean Hayes was due to star opposite Gena Rowlands in the movie, but he’s had to drop out (probably because he’s busy working on a pilot for a possible new TV show), and has been replaced by the hotness that is Cheyenne Jackson.

Jackson will play high-spirited dance instructor Michael Minetti (Cheyenne’s years on Broadway in the likes of Xanadu, The Performers and Damn Yankees should have prepared him well to get his dance on). As you may have guessed from Hayes being replaced by Jackson, Michael is gay.

Deadline reports that ‘Gena Rowlands co-stars as Lily Harrison, a retiree who hires Minetti to give her private dance lessons in her St. Petersburg Beach, FL condo. The unlikely pair soon develop a friendship apart from dance.’ The relationship starts with lies – she pretending her husband is still alive, him saying he’s married to a woman – but soon deepens into something more, with both coming to understand things about the other beyond the stereotypes.

6 Dance Lessons is based on the hit play by Richard Alfieri, which has had a Broadway run and has been seen in 20 countries. Arthur Allan Seidelman directs the film version from a screenplay by Alfieri. Jackson will next be seen opposite Michael Douglas and Matt Damon in HBO’s Behind The Candelabra.

Alan Cumming Back For X-Men: Days of Future Past

March 13, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

alan-cummingX-Men: Days of Future Past is going to see a major uniting of X-Men, with the First Class cast starring alongside Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Juno Temple, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen and more. And now one more mutant from the earlier trilogy can be added to the mix, Nightcrawler, as played by queer actor Alan Cumming.

The news comes from James McAvoy in an interview with Heat Radio (picked up by ComicBookMovie), where he says, “It’s huge. The cast is huge. You’ve got me, [Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender,] Nick Hoult will be back and he’s just blossoming massively over there [in the U.S.] as well. Sir Patrick Stewart, Sir Ian McKellen, Halle Berry, Alan Cumming, Peter Dinklage I hear mentioned – I don’t know if that’s happening. ‘Huge’ Jackman‘s coming by. He is huge. He’s massive, he’s just like – he’s about 7’5″ and like muscle-lier than Satan in the film Legend.”

While it does sound like McAvoy is going by what he’s heard rather than definite facts, the mention of Alan Cumming, who hasn’t been talked about before, does suggest he’s got real on his inclusion in the movie.

The films starts shooting next month, with a time-travelling plot that sees the First Class cast having to prevent a terrible future from occuring that sees mutants rounded up and interned in concentration camps. It’s due out summer 2014.

Take A Look Behind-The-Scenes Of The Movie G.B.F. (Gay Best Friend) & Help Fund It

March 12, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

G.B.F. (Gay Best Friend) is set to premiere at Tribeca next month, but it’s still looking for completion funds by launching a crowd-sourcing campaign to raise $30,000 to complete the movie, get it to festivals, pay for the music and help with marketing costs. And to help see if you want to be part of the film, they’ve released a behind-the-scenes look at the movie, which you can watch above.

The film has a great cast including queer actor Paul Iacono (The Hard Times of R.J. Berger), Megan Mullaly (Will & Grace), Michael J. Willett (United States of Tara), Natasha Lyonne, Rebecca Gayheart, Jonathan Silverman and Horatio Sanz.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘G.B.F. tells the story of two closeted best friends, Tanner (Michael J. Willett, United States of Tara) and Brent (Paul Iacono, The Hard Times of R.J. Berger). Brent longs for the spotlight and has a plan that will make him the most popular kid in school. He believes that coming out will make him instantly popular, as the newest must-have teen girl “accessory”: The G.B.F. (Gay Best Friend). Tanner on the other hand, would rather fly under the radar and graduate from high school without ever being noticed.

‘When things don’t go according to plan and Tanner is outed instead of Brent, the two boys go from B.F.F.s to instant frenemies and the three most popular girls in school — queen-of-mean bombshell Fawcett (Sasha Pieterse, Pretty Little Liars), drama club diva Caprice (Xosha Roquemore, Precious) and sweet, Mormon good-girl ‘Shley (Andrea Bowen, Desperate Housewives) launch an all-out social war to win Tanner’s status-enhancing friendship.’

You can find out more over at the film’s IndieGogo page.

James Franco Says He’s Lost Advertising Campaigns Due To Gay Image

March 12, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

James Franco loves him some gay, but it appears that many corporations don’t feel the same way. Gay.net caught up with the actor at a screening of his movie, Spring Breakers, where he told them, “I’ve lost three kind of advertising campaigns now because the companies say they don’t like my image, but I know that it’s directly related to the films that I put out at Sundance. So you could say that there’s still this kind of homophobia or prejudice against certain kinds of material in mainstream cinema.”

The reference to ‘kind of advertisement campaigns’ probably refers to endorsement deals that celebs enter to wear particular brands of clothes, perfumes or accessories. However, while he may have lost three, we’d bet the success of Oz The Great And Powerful has a few more lining up.

It does suggest though that there’s still a level of homophobia in corporate America, where they’d probably suggest they dropped Franco due to the fact he isn’t afraid of controversial movies – such as his Travis Mathews collaboration Interior Leather Bar, which features real gay sex – when it’s actually his interest in exploring gay sexuality that’s the problem. After all, would they have dropped him if he was looking at vanilla straight sex?

LGBT Iris Prize Film Burger Gets Its World Premiere Tonight On BBC2 Wales In The UK

March 11, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

burgerWe like the Iris Prize at Big Gay Picture Show. While most festivals simply pat the filmmakers on the back and hope they’ll be able to make some connections at the event, Iris is far more practical. The LGBT short film festival is the world’s largest gay and lesbian short film prize, valued at £25,000, helping filmmakers with the money and expertise to actually make a new film.

Now the fourth short film to be produced by Iris is due to receive its world premiere screening in the UK on Monday 11th March 2013 on BBC Two Wales. The film comes from Norwegian writer/director Magnus Mork, who won the 2010 Iris Prize for The Samaritan. His new film, Burger, was filmed on location in Cardiff, Wales on a cold November night and includes strong performances from the ensemble cast of colourful characters which includes actors from the city’s Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. It follows people – gay and straight, male and female, couples, singles and friends – who frequent a burger bar late at night.

“Completing a film is always a significant moment in the life of film production but securing an audience is even more exciting. This is why having Burger start its journey with a screening on the BBC in Wales is a great way to build an audience and share this amazing film,” said Berwyn Rowlands from the Iris Prize.

The next Iris Prize Festival, takes place in Cardiff from 9th-13th October 2013.

Love Free or Die Trailer – Inside the life of gay bishop Gene Robinson

March 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Wolfe Video has set an April 9th US DVD release date for the documentary Love Free Or Die, about retired Episcopalian Bishop Gene Robinson, who caused great controversy in 2004 when he became the first priest in an openly gay relationship to be consecrated as a bishop in a major Christian denomination.

His ordination threatened to cause a schism in the worldwide communion, with many saying being gay and in a relationship was incompatible with the Christian faith. However Robinson didn’t let that put him off, and over the years has become increasingly vocal in the civil rights struggle, getting married and calling on those who use faith to say being gay is wrong to realise that they are incorrect.

The documentary won a Special Jury Prize at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. Take a look at the trailer above. [Read more…]

LGBT Themed Film The Commitment Up For Social Workers Media Award

March 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

THE-COMMITMENT-pic1At most awards ceremonies, LGBT films get completely overlooked. However the US National Association of Social Workers Media Awards has taken the unusual step of nominating a small gay-themed short film alongside two more mainstream efforts.

Chinese-American Director Albert M. Chan’s The Commitment is up for the Best Feature Film award alongside the Cameron Diaz starrer What To Expect When You’re Expecting, and the Oscar-nominated Wes Anderson flick, Moonrise Kingdom. The Commitment is the first gay movie ever nominated in the category.

The Advocate reports that ‘The Commitment tells the story of Robert (Albert Chan) and Ethan (Jason Lane Fenton), a gay interracial couple who work to overcome many obstacles after being chosen by a pregnant woman to adopt her baby. The film was inspired by the real-life experiences of Chan and his husband of seven years after when they decided to expand their family through adoption.

Perhaps best of all is that you can help it win, as voting is open to the public until March 15th over at SocialWorkerSpeak.org.

The 20-minute short has already won several awards at film festivals and is hoping to add one more, this time coming from the perhaps unexpected realm of social work.

After Director Brett Ratner Was Blasted By GLAAD For Using The Word ‘Fag’, They’re Now Giving Him An Award

March 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

brett-ratnerHow times change! In late 2011 Rush Hour and X-Men 3 director Brett Ratner was set to produce the Oscars, but then he said in a screening Q&A, “Rehearsal? What’s that? Rehearsal’s for fags.”

It set off a storm of controversy over his use of the homophobic word and resulted in Brett resigning from his Oscar position, getting severely criticised by GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) and writing an open letter apologising, saying “So many artists and craftspeople in our business are members of the LGBT community, and it pains me deeply that I may have hurt them.”

At the time GLAAD responded by saying, “This apology is a good start, but we’re working with Ratner’s people for more action, to clearly send a message to Hollywood that the anti-gay slurs used by bullies and bigots have no place in the world of entertainment, or anywhere else.”

Ratner promised to further engage with the the LGBT community, which resulted in him partnering with Tom Ford and GLSEN for a public-service announcement addressing the use of anti-gay language among teens. He also agreed to shoot a video campaign for GLAAD to promote equality for gay and trans people. That PSA is now ready to be launched and GLAAD has decided that Ratner is reformed enough that they’re handing him an award. He’ll be handed an Ally Award at their Media Award ceremony in NYC on March 16th, where his PSAs will also be launched.

The ‘Coming Out for Equality PSA’ series that Ratner worked on features celebrities like Jackie Chan, Charlie Sheen, Giada De Laurentiis and Pauley Perrette talking about their support of the LGBT community.

“Brett Ratner’s dedication and leadership will inspire countless people to speak out in support of LGBT friends, family, neighbors and children,” says GLAAD President Herndon Graddick in a statement. “From high-school jocks to faith leaders, those who follow Brett’s lead are admired and heralded, while anti-LGBT bullies are increasingly ridiculed and marginalized.”

Some have welcomed the news, saying it shows the LGBT community is ready to forgive and recognise those who’ve changed and now work for equality. However others have questioned whether it’s a slightly more calculated quid pro quo – essentially Ratner saying ‘I’ll make a high profile campaign for you, if you publicly recognise me and therefore help de-bigot me in the public consciousness’.

Perhaps sensing some would question why Ratner would get an ally award just 16 months after he got into trouble for using the word ‘fag’, Graddick commented to THR, “Out of anybody I’ve ever worked with, Brett has been the most humble and willing to put his money and actions where his mouth is… In terms of an ally and what someone can do after an incident that was negative like that, I’ve never worked with someone who displayed such genuine interest in helping the community. There’s no one who deserves this more than Brett does.”
