Skyfall Screenwriter Talks James Bond Gay Subtext

November 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There’s been much interest in a particular scene in Skyfall where the villain played by Javier Bardem flirts with James Bond and stroked his chest. There was even a hint of possible 007 bisexuality, as Bond is trying to get out of the sticky situation and comments, “What makes you think this is my first time?”

So is Bond meant to be bisexual? Well, the film’s screenwriter,John Logan has now been talking about it, and he seems keen to burst the bubble of those wondering if the secret agent will be getting into a bit of man love in future adventures.

Speaking to THR at the film’s New York Premiere, he says people have said he’s turning Bond bisexual “Because I’m, in fact, gay but not true at all.”

He adds, “(Director) Sam (Mendes) and I were discussing, there were so many scenes where Bond goes mano-a-mano with the villain, whether it’s Dr. No or Goldfinger or whatever, and there’s been so many ways to do a cat-and-mouse and intimidate Bond, and we thought, what would truly make the audience uncomfortable is sexual intimidation; playing the sort of homoerotic card that is sort of always there subtextually with characters like Scaramanga in Man With the Golden Gun or Dr. No. So we just decided that we should play the card and enjoy it.”

Of course, that doesn’t mean 007 has never indulged in a bit of experimentation, but it’s seems unlikely we’d ever see that on screen, or that it would be anything other than obliquely mentioned. And the sad truth is, that even in the Skyfall scene, it comes across as more Bond playing the villain’s game against him that an actual confession.

When Craig was asked a couple of weeks ago about the scene and whether Bond is bluffing, the actor commented, ‘”What are you going to do? I don’t see the world in sexual divisions.” He then changed the subject from Bond to Bardem’s wonderfully flamboyant character, Silva. “Someone suggested that Silva may be gay,” Craig said with a big smile. “And I’m like, ‘I think he’ll f*** anything.’ I love that scene, It makes me laugh. I hope it makes you laugh.”

Jared Leto Going Flamboyantly Gay For Dallas Buyer’s Club

November 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

As he’s been concentrating on being a bit of a douche in his band 30 Seconds To Mars, Jared Leto hasn’t been doing a lot of acting in the last few years. His last role was in the indie flick Mr. Nobody in 2009. However now he’s set to return to the big screen in The Dallas Buyers Club, playing a flamboyantly gay cross-dresser, according to Variety.

The movie is about Ron Woodruff (Matthew McConaughey), a man who contracts AIDS in 1986. After becoming frustrated with the lack of medical options in the US, due to the fact drugs have to be extensively tested by the FDA before they become available to patients, he begins smuggling alternative drugs into the country from Mexico. Jared Leto will portray Rayon, another AIDS patient Woodruff befriends at the hospital. Gael García Bernal was previously in talks for the showy cross-dressing role, but a deal was never made. Jennifer Garner also stars.

Jean-Marc Vallée is directing from a screenplay by Melisa Wallack and Craig Borten, with production scheduled to begin next week in New Orleans. Leto can fit it in as 30 Seconds to Mars have recently wrapped up a world tour.

Gaspard Ulliel To Play Gay Fashion Designer Yves Saint Laurent In New Biopic

November 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There are a couple of biopics of Yves Saint Laurent in the works, and now one of them has moved forward with the news that 28-year-old French actor Gaspard Ulliel (Hannibal) will play him. The film will concentrate on the early days of the fashion designer’s career and the launch of the YSL brand, which during the 60s and 70s became one of the most innovative fashion houses in the world. Bertrand Bonello (House Of Tolerance) is set to direct, with plans to shoot next spring.

Saint Laurent was, of course, gay, although it isn’t clear how far the biopic will go into that. That said, unlike some tales, it would be tough to disentangle Yves Saint Laurent’s love life from the rest of his story without outright lying. The designer met and fell in love with industrialist Pierre Berge in 1958, and they launched the YSL fashion house together 1961, running it together for several decades. They split in 1976, but remained close for the rest of Saint Laurent’s life, entering a civil partnership together just before the designer died in 2008.

There is another film about the designer in the works, which is said to concentrate of the ups and down of the relationship between Saint Laurent and Berge. That film has the backing of Berge himself, who hasn’t given his blessing or support to the one starring Ulliel (although that doesn’t mean he necessarily disapproves, just that he’s made a deal regarding the other one). Max Landis To Direct Me Him Her, About Someone Struggling With Their Sexuality

November 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Thanks to Chronicle, Max Landis is one of the most in-demand screenwriters in Hollywood, having taken on a range of projects from a space movie at Disney to Woogles and a sequel to Chronicle. However now he’s broadening his horizons and following in his father John’s directing footsteps, as Variety reports he’s set to helm Me Him Her, based on his own screenplay.

The project is an indie comedy that Big Beach Films has agreed to fund. There’s precious little info on the plot, other than Landis describing it as ‘Reality Bites on acid.’ That doesn’t really tell us much, but it will apparently explore three young people going through a quarter-life crisis in Los Angeles, looking at love, sex and friendship as one of the trio struggles with their sexuality.

The plan is to shoot next year, although it’s not entirely certain when at the moment. Presumably Landis is waiting to find a gap in amongst all the other projects he’s got going on, which also include a couple of TV pilots.

#InvisibleParents Short Highlights Inequality For Gay Families In Europe

November 5, 2012 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Director Mike Buonaiuto scored a massive viral hit with his moving short Homecoming, which used the touching story of a soldier’s return home to push for equal marriage. Now Buonaiuto is back, teaming up with AllOut.org for a new short timed to coincide with National Adoption Week, which hopes to raise awareness of the inequalities facing gay parents throughout the EU.

As Allout put it in a petition they’re hoping we’ll all sign, ‘Same-sex families often stop being considered a family as soon as they set foot in a different country in the European Union – because the EU lacks a general legal framework to recognise these couples and their children across borders.’ The petition calls on the European Commission to address the situation.

It is surprising that while the EU assures things like free movement of people, stronger trade ties and that rules on everything from cheese to bananas are the same across the block, something as fundamental as a family can alter depending on where you are within the Union.

Andre Banks, Executive Director of AllOut.org commented, ‘EU member states pride themselves on integration, but their governments still fail to resolve the legal hurdles keeping same-sex families from full recognition across borders.’

MEP Michael Cashman has also joined the campaign, saying ‘Gay and lesbian parents can often find themselves legally invisible in a large percentage of the continent, putting their entire family in a very vulnerable situation, especially with regard to healthcare, holidays or family legal systems. The #InvisibleParents film argues that all children should be treated with legal equality, regardless of the sexual orientation of their parents. It is a brilliant way to allow people to connect with these very real issues and then do something about it.’

Organisers are encouraging people to share the film on social networking platforms and to use the Twitter hashtag #InvisibleParents

Jon Hamm & Daniel Radcliffe Bathe Together In A Young Doctor’s Notebook Photos

November 5, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Sky Arts 1 certainly got a impressive cast for its four-part mini-series A Young Doctor’s Notebook, with Jon Hamm and Daniel Radcliffe both signed up to play older and younger versions of the same character (we won’t bother wondering how 5ft 5in Radcliffe grew into 6ft Hamm over the years). Now some images from the series have shown up online, including one showing the two stars taking a bath together!

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A Young Doctor’s Notebook is a four-part comedy drama based on a collection of short stories by the celebrated Russian writer and playwright Mikhail Bulgakov. The drama recounts Bulgakov’s semi-autobiographical experiences as a young doctor working in the small village of Muryovo at the dawn of the Russian Revolution in 1917.

‘Recounting from his notebooks, the Doctor considers his life and career as he tries to treat the patients of a village that is struggling to enter the modern age. Dealing not only with the superstitious and poorly educated patients but with his own inner demons, the doctor reveals doubts about his own competence and struggles with the immense burden of medical responsibility.

‘Jon Hamm takes on the role of the older doctor, who has a series of bleakly comic exchanges with his younger self, played Daniel Radcliffe.’

Men Fined $1.5 Million Each For Pirating Gay Porn

November 3, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Here’s a bit of a wake up call for those who thought sharing porn online would have no repercussions, as Kywan Fisher of Virginia and Cormelian Brown of Delaware have each been fined $1.5 million for using their paid memberships of gay porn sites to download videos that they then illegally shared on GayTorrents.net.

Forbes reports that the summary judgements – which were the maximum allowed – were entered against the men after they failed to respond to summonses or show up in court. Cases against 13 other defendants are ongoing, with at least two heading for trial. The CEO of porn producer Flava Works, which launched the suits against the men, commented, “We want to go all the way. We want them to understand you can’t just steal.”

He added that with the judgements against the two men, “That was the maximum we were entitled to, so it wasn’t unexpected. But I thought they might tone it down.”

The men were tracked down due to the fact the site includes individual codes on each of its videos, so it knows exactly which members originally downloaded them from the site. It then used the details it had on file for these paying members to sue them for sharing the files.

Flava Works, which specialises in black and latino porn such as Mixxxed Nuts and the Thug Boy series, isn’t the only gay porn company who’ve gone after those who’ve shared their videos. It is perhaps unsurprising, as while the legit film industry has spent years campaigning against online filesharing, it’s believed to have hit the bottom line of porn producers far more tangibly. However some have seen the porn industry’s dogged tactics as a slightly bullying, including reports that some people who say they never illegally downloaded or shared porn have paid fines simply so their name wouldn’t publicly be released in connection with pornography. Whether there’s any truth to that is difficult to tell.

Kywan Fisher and Cormelian Brown are still trying to ignore the lawsuits as well as attempts to get in touch with them, but they’d better do something soon as they’ve certainly got a lot of cash they’re expected to pay.

Jennifer Garner Joins AIDS Drama The Dallas Buyers Club

November 2, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Dallas Buyers Club has been in the works for a long time, but in the last few months its been inching ever closer to the screen, with Matthew McConaughey feeling it was near enough that he’s lost huge amounts of weight to play the title role. Now Deadline reports Jennifer Garner is close to signing on for the film, taking a role that was once destined for Hilary Swank.

The drama is based on the true story of Ron Woodroff, an AIDS patient who before the advent of modern treatments, began smuggling drugs into the US that had shown great promise in helping people with HIV/AIDS. The Texas electrician then clashed with the Food and Drug Administration, which wanted to keep the drugs out of the country until they’d been fully licensed – even though that meant some people would die in the meantime.

The production is also close to signing the important role of a cross-dresser, but no further information has been revealed. Gael Garcia Bernal will also star in Jean-Marc Vallee’s film, with production due to begin on November 11th in New Orleans.

Brad Pitt Donates $100,000 To Marriage Equality Fight

November 1, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Brad Pitt’s mom may have raised eyebrows a few months ago when she wrote a letter to her local paper saying people should vote for Mitt Romney, as least partially because he was against gays getting married. However Brad himself has never wavered in his support for LGBT causes, and now he’s putting his money where his mouth it, promising to match donations to the Human Rights Campaign up to $100,000. The HRC is heavily involved in the battles over marriage equality that are going up for the vote in several US states next week, as well as other measures that effect LGBT lives.

Brad released this statement: ‘It’s unbelievable to me that people’s lives and relationships are literally being voted on in a matter of days. In Maine, Maryland, Minnesota and Washington, voters will go to the polls to decide if gay and lesbian couples – our friends and neighbors – are worthy of the same protections as everyone else. But that’s the system we have and I’m not going to back down from the fight for loving and committed couples to have the ability to marry. Especially when groups like the Human Rights Campaign are fighting these battles day-in and day-out. So, here’s what I’m going to do. If you make a contribution to these ballot measure campaigns in the next 24 hours, I’ll double it – every dollar of the way, up to $100,000.’

The campaigns have apparently received enough cash that Brad will give the full 100 grand.

Just when we were having second thoughts about Brad following his odd Chanel ad antics, he goes and does something like this, to ensure we love him all over again.

Benedict Cumberbatch To Play Gay Beatles Manager Brian Epstein

November 1, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While some have suggested Benedict Cumberbatch is playing gay in Sherlock, he’s now going to do it properly, playing Beatles manager Brian Epstein in a new biopic of the man who guided the Fab Four to fame.

The Tom Hanks produced movie will focus on the manager’s entire life, rather than just being a story about The Beatles from his perspective. Brian Epstein signed the iconic band back in 1961. He initially had difficulty getting a label to take them, before he launched them to international superstar status. While he’s best remembered for his relationship to the Liverpudlians, he also managed the likes of Cilla Black and Gerry & the Pacemakers.

Epstein was also a closeted homosexual, whose sexuality was completely concealed from the public, although it was an open secret amongst his friends and associates. It’s little surprise it was kept secret, as homosexuality was still illegal in the UK at the time. He’s also said to have had an ‘almost’ love affair with John Lennon, which was never consummated (at least that’s how Lennon put it). Epstein battled addictions with drugs and gambling, and tragically died of an accidental overdose of sleeping pills in 1967, just one month before homosexuality was decriminalised in England and Wales.

Todd Graff wrote the screenplay for the film. The openly gay Graff is a former actor (perhaps best known for The Abyss), who’s more recently written and directed music-fuelled movies such as Camp, Bandslam and Joyful Noise. However he won’t helm this one, as Paul McGuigan (Lucky Number Slevin, Push) has that job. The director already has a good relationship with Cumberbatch as he helmed four out of the six episodes of Sherlock that have been released so far.

It isn’t clear when this film might shoot. (Source: THR)
