Chris Colfer and Kevin Bacon Join Prop. 8 Play Reading

February 15, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’ll be one of the most star-studded plays in history! On March 3rd at LA’s Wilshire Ebell Theatre, a special gala reading is taking place of Dustin Lance Black’s play, 8. The cast has now been completed with Chris Colfer (Glee), Kevin Bacon, and John C. Reilly signing on to join the already starry ensemble, all supporting the fight to have Prop 8 – which banned gay marriage in California – repealed.

Colfer, Bacon and Reilly join George Clooney, Jane Lynch, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Matt Bomer, Jamie Lee Curtis, George Takei, Matthew Morrison, Yeardley Smith, Campbell Brown, Rory O’Malley, and activist Cleve Jones in the production, which will be the West Coast premiere of the play. 8 is based on the transcript of the court case that overturned Proposition 8 (a decision that is currently working its ways through the appeals court), as well as interviews with the plaintiffs and their families.

Chris Colfer will play Ryan Kendall, a young man who testified about his experience being sent by his parents to so-called “reparative therapy” as a teenager. John C. Reilly will play United States District Chief Judge Vaughn R. Walker, who found Proposition 8 unconstitutional after presiding over the historic 12-day public trial. Kevin Bacon will play Charles J. Cooper, the lead attorney for the anti-marriage proponents of Proposition 8

It’ll certainly be an interesting evening, although if you want to go, you’re out of luck as tickets for the charity event have long sold out. The one-night-only event is expected to raise $2 million for the American Foundation for Equal Rights.

Was Ben Hur’s Stephen Boyd Gay? Raquel Welch Says Yes

February 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Although pretty much every dead celebrity has to have a ‘were they gay?’ moment when someone steps forward to claim they were a big ‘mo, it isn’t the first time that it’s been said Ben Hur star Stephen Boyd liked boys more than girls.

The latest to say he was into guys is Raquel Welch, who appeared alongside Boyd in Fantastic Voyage. PinkNews reports that at a film retrospective this weekend in New York, she said: “He was so hot with his cleft chin and he was so not interested in me. I tried to seduce him one time. I was so smitten with him and I was so excited every time I would come on the set I would see Stephen, and think, ‘Oh God, he’s so cute.’ He had what sounded like a Welsh brogue that was so charming.

“For my first trip to New York, when we opened the movie, we were both staying at the Plaza Hotel, so I thought, ‘Here’s my chance!’ So Darryl Zanuck took us all out to dinner at 21 and on the way back to the hotel we shared a cab. I said to him as we were going up in the lift, ‘So Stephen, would you like to come in for a drink?’

“We got out of the lift and he walked me to my room and he said, ‘I’d like to tell you a little story that was told to me by John Gielgud when I was working with the National Theatre. You’ll have to think about it for a moment but I hope you get my drift: An actress is a little bit more than a woman, but an actor is a little bit less than a man.’

“I thought, ‘Oh! He’s not interested in me; I am the wrong sex!’ To be honest, while she assumes it meant he was gay, he might just not have been interested in her.

Boyd was married twice, but both were very short unions, with the second marriage taking place only months before he died of a massive heart attack at the tragically young age of 45. Since his death rumours he was gay have swirled around but there’s been nothing substantiated, and Welch’s claims are unlikely to put matters to rest.

It is believed however that in Ben Hur he went along with screenwriter Gore Vidal’s idea that he should play Messala as if Ben Hur was treating him like a scorned gay lover. Charlton Heston denied this, but if you watch the finished movie, Messala’s love for Ben Hur is quite apparent.

Matt Bomer Publicly Acknowledges His Male Partner

February 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Okay, we’ve got good news and bad news. The good news is that Matt Bomer, star of TV’s White Collar and possibly the most effortlessly handsome man in Hollywood, has acknowledged at an awards ceremony that he bats for our team. The bad news for those of you who are already working out how you can profess your love to him, is that he’s already got a longtime partner and even some kids.

Bomer received the New Generation Arts and Activism Award for his work in the fight against HIV/AIDS at the Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards on Saturday night and ended his speech he said, ‘I’d really especially like to thank my beautiful family: Simon, Kit, Walker, Henry. Thank you for teaching me what unconditional love is. You will always be my proudest accomplishment.’

‘Simon’ is his longtime partner, publicist Simon Halls.

It’s worth noting that Bomer has never denied he was gay and his sexuality was pretty much an open secret in Hollywood. He just hasn’t felt the need to shout about it. His ‘coming out’ was similar to Jodie Foster, who has never publicly said she’s a lesbian, but referred to her longtime partner, ‘my beautiful Cydney [Bernard]’ in an awards acceptance speech a few years ago (let’s hope thing go better for Matt than for Jodie, as she and Cyndney split up shortly afterwards).

It’s also the second time in the last few months that a Hollywood celeb has not only acknowledged their sexuality, but also revealed they’ve got kids. Firefly actor Sean Maher did the same not long ago.

With Matt, Sean and Zachary Quinto, the gayborhood has certainly become a much prettier place recently. It’s also nice that after years where coming out always seemed to mean front page stories and tell-all interviews in newspapers and magazines, actors can now do it quietly and carry on living their lives and getting on with their careers.

For those who’d like to see more of Matt, he’ll be playing a male stripper in Magic Mike this summer, alongside Channing Tatum, Matthew McConaughey and Alex Pettyfer.

Footage of Matt getting his award is below, and thanks to Towleroad for the tip.

Christopher Plummer Continues Awards Run At The BAFTAs

February 12, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After weeks of waiting, the stars gathered at London’s Royal Opera House for the annual BAFTA film awards, with all eyes on leading contenders The Artist and Tinker Tailor to see which would walk off with the most gongs.

On the LGBT front, Christopher Plummer didn’t disappoint, winning Best Supporting Actor for playing an aging gay man in Beginners. There were also a couple of gongs for The Help, helmed by gay director Tate Taylor.

In the end it was The Artist that had the most to celebrate though, walking off with seven awards, including biggies such as Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor for Jean Dujardin, ensuring the movie is now in prime position to match that feat at the Oscars in two weeks time.

Tinker Tailor didn’t completely lose out though, as it picked up Outstanding British Film and Best Adapted Screenplay. Other major prizes went to Meryl Streep for Best Actress and Octavia Spencer for Best Supporting Actress. There were also a couple of awards for Senna, and Paddy Considine celebrated picking up Outstanding Debut For A British Writer, Director Or Producer.

John Hurt, who’s no strange to playing gay in the like of The Naked Civil Servant and Love & Death On Long Island, was given a much-deserved honorary award for Outstanding Contribution To British Cinema. BAFTA’s highest honour, the Fellowship, was handed to Martin Scorsese, who impressed with a speech that was pretty much a love letter to British cinema.

It was a good night with many deserving winners, although some will once more be upset about Drive being shut out. Take a look below for all the winners, and it’s now only two weeks until Christopher Plummer wins at the Oscars (fingers crossed).

Cloudburst To Open 26th London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival

February 11, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s not too long now until the 26th BFI London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival opens on March 23rd (running until April 1st), and now the first element of what promises to be a very interesting programme has been announced, with the news the Opening Night movie will be Cloudburst.

The film stars a pair of Oscar winners – Olympia Dukakis (Moonstruck) and Brenda Fricker (My Left Foot) – as septuagenarian lesbian lovers Stella and Dottie. It’s an interesting subject, as the older generation of gay people has largely been ignored, with rare exceptions such as the recent Beginners. However as those who came of age after Stonewall start to reach pensionable age, it may well be a subject we see addressed more and more.

According to the BFI, ‘This very funny film shows older women in love and deals with some of the harsh realities of ageing with wit, humour and a great deal of affection. Following their nursing home break out, Stella (Dukakis) and Dottie (Fricker) flee their hometown in Maine and head to Canada to get married, picking up an ally along the way in this most unlikely of road movies.’

It marks the third time director Thom Fitzgerald has helmed a film that’s opened the festival, as The Hanging Garden did so in 1998 and The Event was the opener in 2004. It’s a triple whammy no other filmmaker has matched. He commented, “I’m thrilled and tickled that the BFI has chosen Cloudburst to open its 26th London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival. To me, the BFI is more than a national treasure; it’s a cultural icon of worldwide significance. It represents the best in film exhibition and preservation. I deeply appreciate its programmes.”

We’ll find out the full programme for the LLGFF on February 23rd, but they’ve certainly picked an interesting opener.

Celebs React With Happiness To Prop 8 Ruling

February 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The pic above, released by Modern Family star Eric Stonestreet, who appears in the image with gay co-star and on-screen lover Jesse Tyler Ferguson, is perhaps the best argument we’ve heard for allowing gay marriage in California. They’re right – who wouldn’t want to watch Mitchell and Cameron tie the knot on the hit sitcom?

Theirs was but one response to the Ninth Circuit Court Of Appeal decision to uphold a lower court ruling that Prop 8 – which banned same sex marriage in California – was unconstitutional. While the Republican presidential nominees lined up to sound like intolerant, bigoted dinosaurs, many celebs where much happier with the result.

J. Edgar and Milk screenwriter, Dustin Lance Black, who’s written a play about the Prop 8 trial and has been at the forefront of the fight against it, tweeted, ‘With our beautiful plaintiffs now. Hugs and cheers as the 9th circuit court of appeals affirmed that Proposition 8 is unconstitutional!’ You can watch his reaction in a video below.

Here’s some other celeb tweets:

Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy creator) ‘Prop 8 architects: Every civil rights battle is eventually won by the oppressed party. Save your hundred mil and buy some Bud platinum.’

Damon Lindelof (producer of Lost): ‘My feed right now: Celebration on Prop 8 unconstitutionality and outrage over no muppets singing at Oscars. I love you, Twitter.’

Olivia Wilde (Actress): ‘Woohoo!! Die Prop 8 Die!!!! 9th Circuit just ruled you unconstitutional. Next step Supreme Court!’

Ellen Degeneres: ‘Couldn’t be happier. … Today we took another step towards equality.’

Miley Cyrus: ‘We’re one step closer beautiful people.’

North Sea Texas Trailer – Growing up gay in Belgium

February 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Peccadillo Pictures has a great eye for picking out the best in LGBT interest movies from around the world and bringing them to the UK. On April 6th they’ll be releasing North Sea Texas in British cinemas, and now they’ve released a rather intriguing trailer for it.

Here’s the official synopsis: ‘Pim lives in a small town on the Belgian coast, together with his single mother Yvette, a local accordion starlet. It’s an ordinary existence which Pim brightens up by dreaming of princesses, beauty queens and handsome Gino, the boy next door. But when hunky traveller Zoltan blows through town, Pim’s life takes an exciting and unexpected turn.

‘North Sea Texas is the feature film debut from cult director Bavo Defurne, whose short films, love letters to the male form and soaked with lush visuals, have garnered fans from across the globe – drawing comparisons to Pierre et Gilles, Herbert List, Dreyer and Eisenstein.’

Weekend Wins Best Screenplay At Evening Standard British Film Awards

February 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Although the BAFTAs completely ignored it in favour of more commercial but often far less worthy fare, thankfully gay Brit-flick hit Weekend has been getting its dues at the likes of the British Independent Film Awards and the London Critics Circle Film Awards. The latest to honour the movie is the Evening Standard British Film Awards, which last night gave Weekend writer/director Andrew Haigh the Best Screenplay gong.

Andrew attended the ceremony alongside the film’s producer Tristan Goligher and Cinematographer Ula Pontikos. Andrew described the win as “amazing and unexpected; this past year has just been incredible. I just want to thank the actors, Tom [Cullen] and Chris [New], who really brought so much to the script and I share this with them.”

Haigh also won the British Breakthrough Filmmaker award at last month’s London Film Critics’ Circle Awards and the film won two British Independent Film Awards, for Achievement In Production and Most Promising Newcomer for actor Tom Cullen.

Weekend follows the relationship between Russell (Cullen) and Glen (New), over the course of a weekend. On a Friday night after hanging out with his straight mates, Russell heads out to a nightclub, alone and on the pull. Just before closing time he picks up Glen. Over the next 48 hours, Russell and Glen become inseparable, gradually forming a tight bond that neither of them could have predicted – one that may change their lives forever. The film has currently grossed over £200,000 at the UK box office and will be released on Blu-ray and DVD in Britain on March 19th, 2012.

Aside from Weekend, other more than worthy Evening Standard British Film Award winners include the Best Actor going to Michael Fassbender for Shame & Jane Eyre, and Olivia Colman getting Best Actress for her astonishing performance in Tyrannosaur.

Was Katharine Hepburn Set Up With Over 150 Women?

January 30, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

When it comes to tales of the private lives of old time movie stars, it’s almost impossible to tell the truth from the fiction. The studio created versions of star biographies were so far from the truth that it’s bred an entire industry exposing the supposed foibles of Hollywood’s Golden Age elite, much of which is dubious at best.

Now a new book claims to have the inside story of many of the gay and bisexual stars of the 40s, 50s, and 60s. Scotty Bowers, whose stories are legendary even if he’s only just going on record with them now, is set to publish his memoir, ‘Full Service: My Adventures in Hollywood and the Secret Sex Lives of the Stars’, in a couple of weeks time.

The NY Times reports the the book’s ribald stories include claims that he fixed Katharine Hepburn up with more than 150 women, as well as that he provided guys from his stable for Cary Grant, George Cukor and Rock Hudson. Bower’s tales are apparently a virtual who’s who, also including the likes of Spencer Tracy, Cole Porter and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. He even allegedly got into the business after being propositioned and ‘hired’ by Mrs Miniver star Walter Pidgeon in 1943 when he was just 23.

With armies of studio publicists having obscured the truth and stars having spent decades polishing their image, it is tough to tell how many of Bowers’ claims are true and how much of it is him trying to sell books. Many believe him though, and if anyone does have the inside scoop, it’s likely to be him. You can find out more about Bowers and his new tome over at the NY Times.

Christopher Plummer & Modern Family Win At The SAG Awards

January 30, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Although not the most famous of gongs, many believe the SAG (Screen Actors Guild) Awards are the best indicator for the acting Oscars. That’s mainly because there are more actors who vote for the Oscars than anyone else, and many of them also vote for the SAG awards.

The Screen Actors Guild certainly showed its gay friendly side at its awards ceremony on Sunday, giving its Best Supporting Actor award to Christopher Plummer for playing a man who comes out late in life in Beginners. Many believe the Sound Of Music star is now all but guaranteed an Oscar for the role.

On the TV side, Modern Family picked up Best Ensemble In A Comedy Series, while many other of the night’s winner were from gay-friendly shows and film, such as Jessica Lange for American Horror Story and Alec Baldwin for 30 Rock, while there were three awards for The Help, which was helmed by gay director Tate Taylor.
