Chatting To North Sea Texas Director Bavo Defurne

Bavo-Defurne
In the 1990s Bavo Defurne made his name with a series of gay-themed short films that were successful enough that they were collected together into DVD compilations. However then there was a bit of a gap until he returned in 2012 with his first feature film, North Sea Texas, the story of teenager Pim and his burgeoning sexuality in 1970s Belgium.

It’s a great movie and was such a success in the UK that it’s no being re-released on Double Play Blu-ray and DVD, giving us our first chance to see the movie at home in HD. To mark that release, we caught up with Bavo to talk about the movie and what he’s going to do next. [Read more…]

Win North Sea Texas On DVD!

The wonderful North Sea Texas hit DVD on Monday August 6th, and we’ve got three copies of Bavo Defurne’s award-winning film to give away to three lucky people!

The movie follows Pim, who lives in a small town on the Belgian coast, together with his single mother Yvette, a local accordion starlet. It’s an ordinary existence which Pim brightens up by dreaming of princesses, beauty queens and handsome Gino, the boy next door. But when hunky traveller Zoltan blows through town, Pim’s life takes an exciting and unexpected turn.North Sea Texas is the feature film debut from cult director Bavo Defurne, whose short films, love letters to the male form and soaked with lush visuals, have garnered fans from across the globe – drawing comparisons to Pierre et Gilles, Herbert List, Dreyer and Eisenstein.

While adolescence is one of cinema’s favourite subjects (and for various reasons a virtual obsession in gay and lesbian cinema), few films find a balance that feels as if it’s getting to the truth about ‘coming of age’. Bavo Defurne’s North Sea Texas does just that, telling a familiar story yet managing to make it feel fresh, acutely observed and charming. Much of this comes from evoking a strong sense of the early 1970s, great cinematography and excellent performances from a mostly inexperienced cast. It doesn’t hurt either that the strong characters avoid clichés.

Pim (Jelle Florizoone) is a teenager living with his floozy former beauty queen mother in a Belgian coastal town. His mother is more interested in how Pim makes her feel than the boy himself, although this does give him a small amount of freedom to lust after his next door neighbour, Gino (Mathias Vergels). 26th BFI London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival Opens Today

Today’s the day the 26th BFI London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival opens, with gala screenings of Cloudburst, starring Oscar-winners Olympia Dukakis and Brenda Fricker.

The festival runs from now until April 1st, and while some of the screenings are already full, tickets are still available for many of the movies and events, so if you’re in London, head over to the festival’s website to find out more.

Over the next couple of weeks we’ll be bringing you a bit of coverage of some of the movies screening at the LLGFF, so keep an eyes out for that!

Highlights of the festival include two centrepiece screenings of powerful, award-winning dramas. Circumstance is an affecting account of a lesbian coming-of-age in contemporary Tehran, which won the Audience Award at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, while Absent is the unpredictable tale of a 16-year-old’s attempt to get close to his teacher, which won the Teddy Award at the 2011 Berlin Film Festival.

Other top films on the programme include The Perfect Family, starring Kathleen Turner as a Catholic woman coming to terms with her daughter’s sexuality, while Gun Hill Road tells the story of an ex-con struggling to accept that his teenage son is transitioning to female, and features a strong performance by young trans actor Harmony Santana (Eating Out: Drama Camp). The festival closes on April 1st with Bavo Defurne’s North Sea Texas, a compelling tale of teenage longing set in a Belgian coastal town.

2012 London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival Programme Announced

After revealing a couple of weeks ago that the BFI London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival would open with Cloudburst, starring Oscar-winners Olympia Dukakis and Brenda Fricker, the British Film Institute has now revealed the full festival line-up.

The festival runs from from 23rd March-1st April and will offer a varied programme of feature films, special events, shorts, archive classics, experimental and erotic works. While it will open with Cloudburst, it’s now been revealed that the Festival will close with Bavo Defurne’s North Sea Texas, a compelling tale of teenage longing set in a Belgian coastal town.

There are also two centrepiece screenings of powerful, award-winning dramas. There’ll also be an eclectic programme of special events, such as Brian Lobel and Aaron Wright’s Cruising for Art, which is a film-themed participatory theatre project. Transgender Representation – Are We Nearly There Yet? will look at the last five years of trans film and television, while Families Like Ours features films that discuss LGBT parenting from the point of view of parents, pupils and teachers.

After budget cuts last year, a wave of popular and industry support has ensured a renewed commitment to the festival’s future, with the 2012 programme 30% larger than the 2011 event, consisting of 53 features and 67 shorts.

North Sea Texas Trailer – Growing up gay in Belgium

Peccadillo Pictures has a great eye for picking out the best in LGBT interest movies from around the world and bringing them to the UK. On April 6th they’ll be releasing North Sea Texas in British cinemas, and now they’ve released a rather intriguing trailer for it.
