Nobody’s Watching Teaser – Take a look at the gay-themed movie that just won Best Actor at Tribeca

May 4, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Since it started in 2002, the Tribeca Film Festival (co-founded by Robert de Niro), has become one of the world’s premiere movie fests. It’s a great honour then to win an award at Tribeca, which is just what Guillermo Pfening did, for playing a gay Latino immigrant in Nobody’s Watching. That certainly bodes well for the movie, which will hopefully get a release soon.

Here’s the film’s synopsis from the Tribeca Film Festival website: ‘Nico (Pfening) is a famous actor in Argentina, but in New York, nobody takes notice. After giving up a successful career in his home country for a chance to make it in the Big Apple, he needs to juggle bartending, babysitting and odd jobs to keep himself afloat. Starting from square one is hard in the city of dreams. With each role Nico takes on, he puts on a new persona in order to fit in. He performs the ideal bartender, the up-and-coming actor, the friend, the father figure. But when old friends from Buenos Aires come to visit, he needs to juggle the image of his old life with the reality of the struggling actor in New York City.

‘In a moving depiction of this vibrant city, director Julia Solomonoff’s touching feature presents a portrait of immigrant solitude. Nico faces the difficulty of finding not only a home, but himself amidst the indifferent metropolis. Nobody’s Watching questions how we adjust when we lose our audience.’

Today, the movie Taxi Stories receives its US/International premiere as part of the LA Asian Pacific Film Festival. It will screen on Wednesday, May 3rd at 8:30pm, as the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA. It’s a great time then to take a look at the trailer for the intriguing pan-Asian film, which is getting a decent amount of buzz.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘TAXI STORIES is a mosaic film of 3 stories in 3 different Asian cities where the paths of the rich and poor cross one another in and around taxis. All 3 characters desperately want to connect on a basic human level but are their own worst obstacle. In a new Asia where social mobility is linked to increasing wealth, money divides and separates each of them making it harder to be who they really are and not what they appear to be.

‘TAXI STORIES stars reknowned Hong Kong acting legend Ms. Petrina Fung Bobo (馮寶寶), Indonesian mega singer/actress Shanty and rising star Cora Cao (曹珊). TAXI STORIES is written and directed by Amsterdam based Chinese American filmmaker Doris Yeung and is a co-production between China, Indonesia and The Netherlands.’

As Good As You Trailer – The Lesbian-themed dramedy is heading towards its US release

May 3, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Synopsis: ‘In her feature film debut, Heather de Michele directs a screenplay by Gretchen M. Michelfeld, executive produced by Michelfeld and produced by Reena Dutt.

‘Laura Heisler leads an outstanding cast in this poignant and witty film about a bereaved woman searching for meaning and purpose in the aftermath of her wife’s death. Jo (Heisler) enlists her brother-in-law Jamie (Bryan Dechart) as a sperm donor in an effort to salvage her dream of raising a family. Along the way she leans a bit too heavily on her two best friends, a lesbian punk photographer named Lisa (Anna Fitzwater) and a straight male barfly named Nate (Raoul Bhaneja).

‘The screenplay by Gretchen Michelfeld is consistently tender in its portrayal of grief, even as the film becomes a kind of willful, triumphant comedy. Director Heather de Michele navigates the tonal shifts with expert timing, good taste, and craftsmanship. The film also features Peter Maloney, Karis Campbell, Elizabeth Herring, and Annie Potts.’

The film will receive its Los Angeles theatrical premiere on June 9th, 2017, at Laemmle’s Music Hall. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Matt Bomer Talks About The Difficulties He Faced With His Parents When Coming Out As Gay

May 2, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While there are many heartwarming stories out there about families brought closer together when someone comes out as gay, there’s still a lot of prejudice out there and it can sometimes be difficult. That’s particularly true if you come from a conservative family, like actor Matt Bomer did.

He’s been talking about how he came out to his parents to Out, telling them, “Telling your family is a huge, huge deal. I really view my life as divided between the time before I told my parents, and the time after. And the decisions I made, and the life I lived, before and after, are vastly different. It’s night and day.”

As he says of the time before, “I was raised in a conservative Christian household. We weren’t even allowed to watch ‘secular’ television, anything that was deemed not proper for Christians.”

He then relates the story of his coming out, “I wrote a letter to my parents. I would have lost my sense of direction if I tried to do it in person… There was radio silence for a long, long time, at least six months… And then I came home and we had the blowup that I’d always feared. But we got that out of the way, and we got down to the business of figuring out how to love each other. I would say within a matter of years we started to figure it out. It was a struggle. It’s a struggle for anybody to take their paradigms and set of beliefs and understandings and completely flip the script. So I’m empathetic toward everyone. And my family is so loving. My mom just asked me, [my husband] Simon, and the boys to go down and speak to her women’s group in Houston so, you know, I’m here to tell people it can get better. Because I had so many people in my life saying, ‘You need to get rid of all expectations — you need to cut them out.’ But I was like, ‘They’re my family’.”

As he points out, “I want to say that since then, my family’s come around and they are amazing, incredible grandparents to our kids.”

So even if coming out can be hard and cause family problems, that isn’t always the end of the story.

‘Next to them, many men who wrote key chapters of the Berlin gay liberation movement are resting, victims of the AIDS epidemic. In one of Europe’s most colorful cemeteries, the funerary culture suddenly takes a new dimension, and life is celebrated with all its mysteries.’

B&B Trailer – A gay and bloody battle for survival in the award-winning film

May 1, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

B&B has certainly had a fair amount of success on the festival circuit, including winning Best LGBT Film at the London Independent Film Festival, and distributor Peccadillo Pictures picking up the UK and Ireland rights. While we’re used to plenty of gay-themed comedies and drama, this one takes us into horror/thriller territory.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Marc and Fred exercise their civil rights by checking in at a B&B run by devout Christian Jeff and his teenage son Paul. Jeff has already been successfully sued after he refused them a double bed. Our heroes have come back to demonstrate who’s in the minority now. All goes to plan until a thuggish Russian checks in. Is Alex a fellow gay campaigner or a neo-Nazi come to support homophobia overseas? The gag quickly runs sour as our couple begin to fear they’ve been set up for a beating. A terrifying death occurs but not the one we’ve been expecting.  When Marc and Fred uncover a cold-blooded murder they realize they’re next.’

The film was written and directed by BAFTA-nominated Joe Ahearne (Trance, The Replacement, Doctor Who), who comments, “I wanted to do a thriller in the Hitchcock vein but with gay characters making the wrong choices and getting terrified out of their wits. B&B goes beyond the gay relationship movie. It’s a thriller with a married couple at the centre, something I haven’t seen before.”

The couple is played by Tom Bateman (Kenneth Branagh’s Murder On The Orient Express, Amy Schumer’s Snatched) and Sean Teale (Bryan Singer’s Gifted, Ben Affleck’s Incorporated), and the B&B owner is played by Paul McGann (Withnail & I, Doctor Who).

B&B has just played in competition at the ECU Independent Film Festival in Paris and is also playing in competition at the MIFO LGBT Festival in Miami, OUT Film CT in Connecticut and a number of other festivals. To find out more about B&B, upcoming screenings, and its creators, please check the film’s official website www.BnBfilm.co.uk.

Star Wars Boss Kathleen Kennedy Isn’t Ruling Out A Romance Between Poe & Finn

April 27, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

When The Force Awakens was released, more than a few people noticed that John Boyega’s Finn and Oscar Isaac’s Poe Dameron seemed to like each other a lot, to the point where many wondered if the film was suggesting some sort of romance between them. It even got the point where the actors were joking about it and you couldn’t tell if they thought their characters might have a romantic future together or not.

However, it turns out it’s not just fans who’ve been wondering whether the duo might end up as an item, because so have those in charge of the franchise as Lucasfilm. Kathleen Kennedy, who runs the company, was asked about the possibility of Poe and Finn properly falling in love.

She replied, “We’ve talked about it, but I think you’re not going to see it in The Last Jedi.”

Of course, that doesn’t mean we’ll see it in any of the other movies either, but it’s nice to know they’re taking it seriously as a possibility. And from what Kennedy said next, it appears they’d never thought about Finn and Poe having a romantic connection until fans pointed it out.

She says, “In the next six or eight months we will have some meetings about the stories that we will develop next. After 40 years of adventures, people have a lot of information and a lot of theories about the path these stories can take, and sometimes those theories that come up are new ideas for us to listen to, read and pay attention to.”

Although some may think this is a form of queerbaiting, hopefully it means Kennedy and others are taking the idea of LGBT characters in the Star Wars universe seriously, and whether it’s Poe and Finn or not, that they will arrive in the movies soon. (H/T GSN)

Is One Of The Guardians Of The Galaxy Gay? The Director Says ‘Maybe’

April 26, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There’s been a bit of consternation in the last week after it initially looked like Marvel was bringing a couple of LGBT characters into its film universe when scenes from Black Panther were screened that suggested two of the women were interested in one another, only for them to reveal that no, they’re not.

However, there’s an outside chance that the Marvel universe already has a gay character, but we just don’t know it yet.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gunn was asked about bringing a gay character into the franchise. He replied, “Absolutely. I would love to be able to. We might have already done that. I say watch the movie. Check it out. See what you think.”

When asked to clarify what he meant – as those who’ve Vol. 2 have suggested there’s little to suggest any of the characters are LGBT, Digital Spy reports Gunn saying, “What I meant to say is this: There are a lot of gay people in the world. There are a lot of bisexual people in the world. There are a lot of characters in the MCU. We’ve barely gotten to know the sexuality of any of those characters. We know Gamora and Quill are interested in each other. That’s about the only sexual relationship that exists within the Guardians. We know Drax has a past with a wife so he’s got some sort of interest in women. But we don’t really know who’s gay and who’s not. It could be any of them.”

This could just be Gunn speculating or inviting people to interpret what’s going on – e.g. was the relationship between Rocket Raccoon and Groot in the first film not purely friends? – or whether he has plans for the third movie he’s just officially signed on to write and direct. We will have to wait and see.

Marvel Quashes Rumours Of Black Panther Lesbian Subplot

April 22, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Florence Kasumba (far left) as Ayo in Captain America: Civil War

Florence Kasumba (far left) as Ayo in Captain America: Civil War

Last week we reported on news that an early screening on scenes from Marvel’s upcoming Black Panther had suggested there might be a couple of LGBT characters in the movie. However, after the likes of Vanity Fair praised this seeming step forward for the Comic Book Universe, Marvel has stepped forward to say it’s not happening.

The scene involves a flirtatious exchange between Danai Gurira’s Okuye and Florence Kasumba Ayo, who in the comics serve as the ceremonial guard of Black Panther, and help protect the Wakandan royal family. In the 2016 comic World of Wakanda by Ta-Nehisi Coates, the two women are a couple, leading many to believe the scene shown meant this would be followed through in the movie.

However, a Marvel spokesperson has now stepped forward to say, via Yahoo!, to say ‘the nature of the relationship between Danai Gurira’s Okoye and Florence Kasumba’s Ayo in Black Panther is not a romantic one and that specific love storyline from the comic World of Wakanda was not used as a source’.

Understandably that statement has caused a bit of a backlash on social media. Marvel has already been roundly criticised for not including any openly LGBT characters in its movies. Although the studio, including head honcho Kevin Feige, has suggested that it will probably happen one day, they’ve said it would have to be organic to the story. With Black Panther, it appears they’ve taken two characters who are canonically LGBT and decided just to ignore that side of them. It does seem like a major missed opportunity.

Will Black Panther Make The Marvel Universe A Bit More Gay?

April 18, 2017 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Florence Kasumba (far left) as Ayo in Captain America: Civil War

Florence Kasumba (far left) as Ayo in Captain America: Civil War

There’s been growing criticism of Marvel and DC’s superhero universes (as well as Fox’s X-Men), that despite a wealth of LGBT characters and stories in the comic books, the movies have stayed resolutely straight. However, now some footage has screened suggested that Marvel will be getting a little more gay with the upcoming Black Panther.

The film will feature Walking Dead star Danai Gurira, Florence Kasumba (who also played the same role in Captain America: Civil War, and Lupita Nyong’o as the Dora Milaje, who in the comics serve as the ceremonial guard of Black Panther, and help protect the Wakandan royal family. The footage that’s screened suggests the movie will be taking some of the storyline of the 2016 comic World of Wakanda by Ta-Nehisi Coates, which focused on the relationship between Ayo and Aneka (played in the movie by Gurira and Kasumba).

Vanity Fair reports that in the footage, ‘We see Gurira’s Okoye and Kasumba’s Ayo swaying rhythmically back in formation with the rest of their team. Okoye eyes Ayo flirtatiously for a long time as the camera pans in on them. Eventually, she says, appreciatively and appraisingly, “You look good.” Ayo responds in kind. Okoye grins and replies, “I know.”’

The magazine suggests this will be a more prominent LGBT storyline than the ‘exclusively gay moment’ in Beauty & The Beast that left many feeling underwhelmed. However, it’s difficult to know whether they’re basing this solely on the scene shown in the preview footage, as if so, we may still be left with something that hints about the characters’ sexuality without actually saying it. We will just have to wait and see, although it is telling that Disney/Marvel chose to screen a scene with very obvious gay undertones as part of the few minutes of footage they showed. It’ll be interesting to see how it plays out in the movie.

Black Panther is due in cinemas February 2018, with Chadwick Boseman reprising the title role which he first played in Captain America: Civil War.
