John Gielgud’s Estate Expresses Anger At New Gay Porn Film Based On A Script By The Late Actor

November 2, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

john-gielgudThis is an oddly intriguing one – a porn film, written by a legendary actor, which has been made even though even before shooting it wasn’t clear whether the filmmakers had any rights to do so. The actor is the late Oscar-winner John Gielgud, who was great friends with the ‘grandfather of gay porn’, Peter De Rome.

De Rome made explicit films in the 60s and 70s for his friends, which then found a wider audience when they were released in the 70s porn-chic era as The Erotic Films Of Peter De Rome (and which were re-released by the BFI a couple of years ago). Gielgud apparently wrote an x-rated short film for De Rome to direct, having enjoyed his friend’s hardcore movies. However it was never filmed – until now, that is.

Before his death last year, De Rome passed the script for Trouser Bar to David McGillivray, who made the documentary Peter de Rome: Grandfather of Gay Porn. Shortly afterwards McGillivray announced plans to film the movie, which is about a men’s clothing store where an orgy is taking place. The director even managed to enlist the likes of Nigel Havers, Barry Cryer and Julian Clary as passersby who spot what is going on.

There has always been a problem though, and that is very early on that Gielgud’s esatate made it that they believed they owned the rights to the script and that in their opinion McGillivray had absolutely no right to make Trouser Bar.

Ian Bradshaw from the Sir John Gielgud Charitable Trust told the Daily Mail, “Earlier this year, the trustees decided not give their permission for it to be produced because they didn’t think it was appropriate. They didn’t have to go into detail because they own the copyright.”

McGillivray decided to go ahead anyway, with filming taking place a few weeks ago and the short now being edited. He says, “Pornography is still a stigma in this country, but Sir John loved porn and, in his letters, he talks about visiting gay cinemas. I was shocked when the trust didn’t give me permission. We stuck to Sir John’s script very tightly when we made the film a couple of weeks ago. He was very specific about the clothes he wanted the actors to wear. They have come down heavily on me. They are using intellectual copyright as an excuse.”

Unless the director has an iron-tight release where GIelgud gave De Rome the right to make the film, or for him to give the rights to someone else, it’s difficult to see how McGillivray is going to justify it legally. Indeed, if the Gielgud Trust decides to sue, Trouser Bar may never even be screened. The director has previously suggested he thinks he’s okay on that front though, saying “they don’t have a leg to stand on”.

It’ll be interesting to see what happens.

GLAAD Criticises Recently Anounced Michelle Rodriguez’s Trans-Themed Film, Tomboy

November 2, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

michelle-rodriguezLast week it was announced that Michelle Rodgriguez was due to star in the film Tomboy, A Revenger’s Tale, in which she’s due to play a hitman who a ‘rogue doctor’ turns into a hitwoman. There’s no doubt the bare bones plot sound sensationalist about the ‘gender-swap’ themes, which has raised the ire of GLAAD, which released a statment to THR expressing its displeasure.

GLAAD’s director of programs for transgender media, Nick Adams, said, “We haven’t read the script, but it’s disappointing to see filmmakers turning what is a life-saving medical procedure for transgender people into a sensationalistic plot device.

“We are at a crucial moment in the public’s understanding of transgender issues, and stories like these have the potential to undermine the progress we’ve worked so hard to achieve.”

As Rodriguez is bisexual and Weaver is a longstanding supporter or LGBT rights, you’d hope they’d only agree to be part of the movie if it dealt properly with the issues that it raises (and indeed there are echoes in the plot of Pedro Almodovar’s The Skin I Live In, so it may not be quite as sensationalistic as it sounds).

However with Hollywood’s track record on trans people, it certainly makes sense for GLAAD to issue a warning shot.

Amores Santos Trailer – New doc looks at gay priests looking for virtual sex online

October 28, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

amores-santosIt has long been believed by many that the ranks of Catholic priests are filled with gay men who headed for the church due to difficulties dealing with their sexuality and who were therefore attracted to a job where they are supposed to be celibate and heading towards everlasting salvation from their ‘evil urges’.

However it’s also known that not all of those in the clergy live up to these ideas. They stand in the pulpit each Sunday as a spokesman for an anti-gay branch of Christianity but in the evening look for exactly what their church preaches against either online or in real life (or both).

Amores Santos is director Dener Giovanini’s documentary, which sees a handsome young actor chatting to gay priests from around the world online who want to engage in virtual sex. The actor attracted 150 priests from 30 different countries, including Anglicans, Evangelicals and manty Catholics.

The doc is pulled together from over 500 hours of explicit chats and as the trailer shows, it promises to help reveal the truth of the situation for gay priests from the inside – both the hyposcrisy and the moral confusion. [Read more…]

Michelle Rodriguez & Sigourney Weaver Starring In Trans-Themed Thriller Tomboy, A Revenger’s Tale

October 28, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

michelle-rodriguezWhile there’s more visibility for transgender people than ever before, not all the coverage has been 100% positive or dealt properly with the issues it raises. As a result there are a few people who are likely to greet the news that bisexual star Michelle Rodriguez is set to star in Tomboy, A Revenger’s Tale with a bit of trepidation.

THR reports that the films ‘centers on an ace assassin who is double-crossed by gangsters and falls into the hands of rogue surgeon known as “The Doctor,” who turns him into a woman. The hitman (now a hitwoman) sets out for revenge, aided by a nurse named Johnnie, who also has secrets.’

Rodriguez is set to play the central assassin, a role previously linked to Freida Pinto, while Sigourney Weaver will be the surgeon.

Although some will worry it will belittle trans people, hopefully it will treat the issues well (you’d hope Rodriguez and Weaver wouldn’t be involved if it didn’t) and expand responsible transgender stories into more mainstream territory.

Walter Hill will write and direct.

Grinder Trailer – A former gay-for-pay hustler becomes obsessed with a young runaway

October 27, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

grinder-trailer-slideWe cover quite a lot of crowdfunding campaigns on BGPS, so it’s always good to see a film that’s made it into post-production thanks to a Kickstarter, rather than just disappearing, never to be heard from again. We covered the campaign for Grinder back in June 2014, and now it’s reached the stage where the trailer for the film has been released.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Grinder is a film about a teenage runaway, Luke, who is seduced to move into New York city by a model agent from his troubled suburban home. An older photographer, Tim, becomes obsessed with Luke and tries to pull him out of the dark world he is sinking into.

‘The film stars Jon Fleming (Will and Grace, Dante’s Cove), Brandon Ruckdashel (Co-ed Confidential, The Lair), and newcomer Tyler Austin. Brandon also wrote Grinder and it is his directorial debut.’

Grinder is currently being submitted to film festivals and is expected to make a 2016 premier. [Read more…]
