Ellen Page Joins Laura Linney & Olympia Dukakis In Netflix’s Tales Of The City Revival

April 24, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last summer it was revealed that Netflix was hoping to revive Armistead Maupin’s Tales Of The City with original cast members Laura Linney and Olympia Dukakis. Now a new 10-part Tales Of The City mini-series has officially been announced, which does indeed have both Linney and Dukakis attached, and Ellen Page have been announced to join them.

Based on Maupin’s novels and stories, Tales Of The City was first turned into a six-part limited series in 1992. That spawned two follow-ups, More Tales of the City in 1998, and Further Tales of the City in 2001. They have become iconic slices on LGBT entertainment, following gay, straight and trans characters in San Francisco, living and connected to Anna Madrigal’s legendary house at 28 Barbary Lane.

Netflix’s official release says of the new series, ‘Based on the books by Armistead Maupin, this next chapter – Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City – follows Mary Ann (Laura Linney), who returns home to San Francisco and is reunited with her daughter (Ellen Page) and ex-husband Brian, twenty years after leaving them behind to pursue her career. Fleeing the midlife crisis that her picture-perfect Connecticut life created, Mary Ann returns home to her chosen family and will quickly be drawn back into the orbit of Anna Madrigal (Olympia Dukakis) and the residents of 28 Barbary Lane.

‘Academy Award nominee and Emmy-, SAG- and Golden Globe-Award winning actress Laura Linney and Academy Award and Golden Globe winner Olympia Dukakis will reprise their roles as Mary Ann Singleton and Anna Madrigal. Barbara Garrick also to return. Academy Award, BAFTA, Golden Globe and SAG Award nominee Ellen Page will join the cast as Shawna.’

“I couldn’t be more excited about this new brand-new incarnation of Tales. It’s set in present-day San Francisco with all the joys and complications that might suggest for the residents of 28 Barbary Lane,’ comments Armistead Maupin. “Mrs. Madrigal’s tenants, both old and new, will be entangled in delicious new adventures and ever-expanding possibilities for love.”

“The magical, vivid world that Armistead Maupin built in Tales of the City is one that offered so many – particularly the LGBTQ+ community – a home for the first time. For many, Tales was the first time they saw themselves on screen,” said writer and showrunner Lauren Morelli. “I am humbled to now find my own home within Tales and to continue telling Armistead’s stories.”

Hard Paint Trailer – Take a look at the winner of the Berlin Film Festival LGBT Teddy Award

April 24, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Hard Paint was this year’s winner of the prestigious Teddy Award at the Berlin Film Festival, given to the best LGBT movie screening in the competition. Now the film is preparing for its US release via Wolfe Video, who has released a new trailer.

Here’s the Teddy Award synopsis of the movie: ‘Pedro earns a living in chat rooms. The image resolution may not be perfect but when Pedro transforms himself into NeonBoy in front of the webcam he still manages to create the desired impression. Slowly, this young man dips his fingers into pots of coloured paint and glides them across his naked body. Glowing in the dark, NeonBoy follows his users’ commands until he agrees to meet one of them in a private chat room for money. But things change when Pedro’s sister Luzia moves out of their shared apartment and he notices that somebody is imitating his performances.

‘He agrees to go on a date with his mysterious rival. This rendezvous will have far-reaching consequences. As with all of the previous films by directing duo Filipe Matzembacher and Marcio Reolon, we find ourselves again in Porto Alegre in northern Brazil, where we encounter young queers in search of intimacy, community and security. The elegantly interwoven virtual images and protagonists’ stories may take us away from the real world, yet in actuality we remain in an increasingly homophobic Brazilian society to whose misfits this sensitive, affectionate portrait in three acts is dedicated.’ [Read more…]

Taron Egerton Set To Play Elton John In Rocketman Biopic

April 22, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For the past few years Elton John and his hubby David Furnish have been working on a musical movie biopic of the singer’s life. Initially they had Ton Hardy on board for the central, but now he’s out and Taron Egerton is in, according to Variety.

John must have been impressed by the young star when they worked together on Kingsman: The Golden Circle.

There’s also been a change in the directors chair, with Dexter Fletcher (who’s just replaced Bryan Singer on the Queen biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody) taking over from the previously attached Michael Gracey. It’s previously been reported that Lee Hall’s script will follow Elton John’s journey from 5-year old musical prodigy who by age 11 won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music, to a young man who rebelled against his strict upbringing, wore outrageous costumes and became a global icon who teamed with songwriter Bernie Taupin to sell more records that just about any musical artist of his era. It will also feature some fantastical elements and plenty of the singer’s music, in keeping with John’s larger than life personality. It’ll shoot this summer.

McQueen Teaser Trailer – Plus a great poster for the documentary about the lauded gay fashion designer

April 19, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Synopsis: ‘Mirroring the savage beauty, maverick originality and vivacity of his design, “McQueen” is an intimate revelation of Alexander [Lee] McQueen’s own personal and professional world, both tortured and inspired. It is a film which celebrates a radical and mesmerizing genius of profound influence and shows his rags-to-riches story as a modern-day fairy tale laced with the gothic.

‘As a self-described “unremarkable” working-class boy from East London, he harnessed his demons and went on to become a global one-man fashion brand and one of the most iconic artists of the century. He was a punk rebel, celebrated for overturning the silver-spoon world of Paris haute couture and ushering in the heady, revolutionary era of ‘Cool Britannia,’ as well as provoking and subverting the fashion industry in ways that often caused controversy and scandal.

‘Portraying his life from his debut collection through to the tragedy of his premature death, “McQueen” is a film that evokes Lee McQueen’s unique vision, originality and maverick sense of humour. The transformative impact of his personality and his work is captured in never-before-seen home movies, audio tapes and “behind-the-scenes” footage shot throughout his career. This material is stitched together with deeply personal interviews from close family, friends and collaborators and cinematic original material that takes us on a journey into McQueen’s mind. His fears, dreams, obsessions, desires and nightmares are on screen for the audience to re-live along with the most memorable and iconic moments in his shows – like nothing the fashion world has ever seen before, or since. The film allows us to search deeply into what made the man a unique artist of his times, as well as helping us to understand the mystery of why, at the height of his acclaim and power, he shockingly made the decision to end to it all.’

McQueen is in UK cinemas June 8th. Take a look at the US teaser trailer and UK poster below. [Read more…]

Hurricane Bianca: From Russia With Hate Trailer – Roy Haylock’s a drag once more in the gay themed sequel

April 19, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

When it was first announced that Rupaul’s Drag Race alum Bianca Del Rio (aka Roy Haylock) was going to star in a movie – Hurricane Bianca – a lot of people assumed it was going to be a vanity project disaster. However the film turned out to be surprisingly fun and was successful enough that it’s getting a sequel.

A brief preview for the movie has been released, showing the return of the foul-mouthed Bianca, as well as Rachel Dratch’s power-hungry Deborah Ward.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘After winning over the staff and students of Milford High School, chemistry teacher Richard Martinez aka Bianca Del Rio (Roy Haylock) sent her nemesis Vice Principal Deborah “Debbie” Ward (Rachel Dratch) to jail in a flawlessly executed plan. When Debbie is released from jail, she conjures up a scheme to do away with Bianca Del Rio once and for all, by luring her on a dangerous journey to Russia to accept a teaching award and cash prize. Filled with laughs, celebrity cameos and America’s drag superstars, HURRICANE BIANCA: FROM RUSSIA WITH HATE is packed with surprises and unlikely partnerships that spark friendship and acceptance.’

The film will be out in the US on DVD/VoD on May 18th, with exclusive premiere screenings in San Francisco on May 14th and New York City on May 15th. In the UK Hurricane Bianca went straight to Netflix, so hopefully the sequel will too. [Read more…]

The Happy Prince Trailer – Rupert Everett takes on the final days of Oscar Wilde

April 19, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We caught The Happy Prince recently at the BFI Flare LGBTQ+ Film Festival – you can read what we thought here – and now the trailer and poster for the movie has arrived. You can take a look at it below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘THE HAPPY PRINCE, written and directed by, as well as starring, Rupert Everett, opens in cinemas across the UK on 15 June. The film features a stellar supporting cast of British actors including Colin Firth (The King’s Speech, A Single Man), Emily Watson (On Chesil Beach, Gosford Park), Colin Morgan (The Fall, Testament of Youth) and Edwin Thomas (Endeavour).

‘Building from his own 2012 lauded stage portrayal of Wilde in David Hare’s The Judas Kiss, Everett physically and emotionally embodies the literary genius as he lives out his last days in exile in Europe, in a performance described by critics as “flawless” and “the best thing Everett has done”.

‘The film opens in Paris, where Wilde, by now in his forties, penniless and in poor health, is still reeling after being imprisoned in England for his love affair with Lord Alfred ‘Bosie’ Douglas (Morgan). Out of prison but a pariah, Wilde swings between grief and a determination to wrest whatever pleasure and beauty he can from the time he has left. His body ailing and heavy, his mind spinning, he survives by falling back on the flamboyant irony and brilliant wit that defined him.

‘Everett’s Wilde is tortured but determined to remain true to himself. His thoughts are filled with love and betrayal and permeated with those closest to him: Bosie, his literary agent Robbie Ross (Edwin Thomas), his great friend Reggie Turner (Firth) and his estranged wife Constance (Watson).

‘As the film travels through Wilde’s final act, and journeys from England to France and Italy, desire and loyalty face off, the transience of lust is laid bare, and the true riches of love are revealed.

‘THE HAPPY PRINCE will be released in cinemas on 15 June 2018 through Lionsgate UK.’ [Read more…]

The Misandrists Trailer – Bruce LaBruce takes us into a lesbian separatist stronghold

April 16, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Bruce LaBruce’s unique brand of queer cinema has been in your face and erotic, but its generally focused on men. However, with The Misandrists he turns his lens onto a story of a bunch of women who have little time for guys.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The Misandrists begin with Volker, a young man with an injured leg, stumbling through the forest, pursued by the police and their tracking dogs. When he emerges from the woods, he sees two young women, Isolde and Hilde, frolicking in a field not far from a large old country house. When the beautiful young Isolde realizes that the handsome young man is in trouble with the law, she convinces Hilde to help her hide him in the basement of the house, which happens to be a school for wayward girls. Isolde forces Hilde to agree to keep the young man’s presence in the basement hidden from the rest of the household, especially from Big Mother, who runs the school, which is comprised of twelve other females: four teachers and eight young women rescued from the streets. It is a lesbian separatist stronghold. Isolde secretly nurses Volker back to health, but does not let him know that the school for girls is also a front for a quasi-terrorist organization called the FLA – the Female Liberation Army – that is willing to go to any lengths to challenge the patriarchy.

‘Meanwhile, we are introduced to all the other girls and women of the house, discovering their backgrounds and their relationships with one another, their beliefs and womanifestos. Several of the members of this radical female tribe are harbouring secrets of their own, which are eventually revealed as the film moves towards its climax: the revelation of a new style of lesbian porn that is to be used as both propaganda tool and calling card for their new brand of female revolution. Blessed be the Goddess of all worlds that has not made me a man.’

The Misandrists is out on DVD and VoD in the UK on April 30th 2018. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]
