Kathryn Bigelow’s Hurt Locker follow-up, Zero Dark Thirty, has already proven controversial due to the supposedly priviledged access President Obama gave the filmmakers to the operation to hunt down Osama Bin Laden. Now the first trailer for the movie is here. The film focuses on the black ops mission to capture or kill Osama bin Laden, which culminated in his death during a high-stakes raid on his compound in Pakistan. Kyle Chandler, Jessica Chastain, Joel Edgerton and Mark Strong star.

George Nolfi May Have One Minute To Midnight
There have already been a few decent movies about the Cuban Missile Crisis, but it appears few people have watched to likes of the excellent Thirteen Days, as Hollywood is planning another take on the story, as The Adjustment Bureau’s writer/director George Nolfi is attached to helm One Minute to Midnight.
THR reports that Nolfi will also rewrite the adaptation of Michael Dobbs’ 2008 non-fiction novel, One Minute to Midnight: Kennedy, Khrushchev and Castro on the Brink of Nuclear War. The title refers to the doomsday clock and just how close it came to the end of the world in 1962!
The book is an hour-by-hour account of the events on all sides of the conflict between The United States and The Soviet Union, when the communists attempted to place missiles in Cuba, which was far to close to the States for comfort, and led to a potentially cataclysmic stand-off as the Russian missiles sailed towards the island.
There’s no news on when the movie might shoot.
Joe Manganiello In Talks For Breacher
Magic Mike was a big success for Joe Manganiello, who managed to raise his profile far beyond just True Blood fans. Now THR reports that he’s in negotiations for another big project, the Arnold Schwarzenegger thriller Breacher.
The is about a team of DEA agents who pull off a lucrative heist disguised as a routine drug raid. Even though they think their secret is safe, the 10 team members start to get killed off, one by one. Joe Manganiello will play Grinder, one of the DEA agents who wants to come clean and tell the police about their illegal raid. Sam Worthington, Terrence Howard, and Dawn Olivieri also star as members of the unit.
David Ayer (End Of Watch) is set to direct from a screenplay by Skip Woods. Filming will begin this October in Atlanta.
Kevin Costner Could Be Jack Ryan’s Mentor & Have Three Days To Kill
For quite a long time Kevin Costner’s career was on the slide largely because he continued to want to always be the leading man, even though audiences weren’t as interested in his movies as they had been. However he now appears to have accepted that supporting roles are a good way for him to keep his profile high, most notably playing Jonathan Kent in the upcoming Man Of Steel.
Now he’s looking to take on two new roles, one a supporting character in a high profile movie and the other slightly smaller but with Costner in the lead. He’s currently being sought to play Jack Ryan’s mentor in the planned reboot of the Tom Clancy franchise. Chris Pine will play Ryan, with Kenneth Branagh directing. Costner’s part would apparently be pretty large, although still second-fiddle to Pine.
The other movie is Three Days to Kill, which would feature Costner as Ethan Renner, an government assassin on the verge of death that takes on one final mission. The script is written by Adi Hasak and Luc Besson. (Source: Deadline)
Daredevil Seeks Director Joe Carnahan, But Fox May Have To Give Galactus To Marvel
The clock is ticking on Fox’s planned reboot of Daredevil, as the studio has just only two months to start production before the rights revert back to Marvel Studios. Fox is now in talks with director Joe Carnahan to helm this reboot after David Slade dropped out, although the studio may be able to strike a deal with Marvel for a production extension.
At the moment filming must begin by October 10th on the movie, although Variety says Fox may be able to delay that by exchanging the rights to certain characters from the Fantastic Four world, including the villain Galactus and The Silver Surfer. Fox has the rights to Fantastic Four and all of its characters, and is currently gearing up for a new reboot from Chronicle director Josh Trank. It isn’t known how Marvel plans to use these characters, although it is possible they could show up in their Guardians of the Galaxy movie or Avengers 2.
Since that Variety report, Deadline has come forward saying insiders state that Fox has no desire to give up any Fantastic Four characters to Marvel, as they’re pleased with the direction Trank’s reboot is taking. This may mean Daredevil will revert back to Marvel, as while the studio still has until October 10th, that’s very little time to set things up considering no director is firmly attached at the moment. If Daredevil does go ahead, the current incarnation is described as “Frank Miller-esque hardcore ’70s thriller”, which could be interesting.
Jennifer Lawrence Heads For The Ends of the Earth
The Weinstein Company announced today that they will finance and distribute The Ends of the Earth, with Jennifer Lawrence (Hunger Games) currently in talks to star in what’s described as an epic, based on true events love story.
The Ends of the Earth is about powerful oil tycoon Ernest Marland who loses everything after engaging in a controversial love affair with his adopted daughter Lydie. He eventually annulled the adoption so that he could marry her. It certainly sounds like it’s going to be tough to do this right without making the whole thing seem creepy, although it is true Lydie wasn’t adopted until she was 19, so he wasn’t doing a full-on Woody Allen.
The screenplay comes from Chris Terrio (Argo), although no director has been hired as yet. (Source: Variety)
Sacha Baron Cohen May Try To Spoof Bond
Sacha Baron Cohen had a medium success with The Dictator this summer, and now he’s thinking about what he’ll do next, as Variety reports that he’s has sold an untitled spy comedy pitch to Paramount Pictures, which parodies the James Bond franchise.
Cohen will write the screenplay with Phil Johnston (Cedar Rapids, Wreck-It Ralph), based on their pitch to the studio. The story follows an 007-like spy, who is forced to go on the lam with his long-lost, idiotic brother.
Although it isn’t confirmed that Sacha Baron Cohen will star, it seems likely that he may play the brother, a moronic soccer hooligan. Sources indicate that the untitled pitch was acquired between the high six-figure to low seven-figure range. Hopefully it’ll be good, although spoofing Bond does seem a rather stale idea.
This is the first project to come out of the actor-writer’s first-look deal with Paramount Pictures from earlier this year, although it isn’t known when it might shoot.
Robert Zemeckis Attached To Barefoot Bandit Film
Robert Zemeckis is planning to follow his first live-action project in 12 years, Flight, with a true-story adaptation that’s currently called Taking Flight, although as that name is quite similar to Zemeckis’ upcoming movie, expect it to change.
The project has been in development since April 2010, when 20th Century Fox acquired a book proposal by Bob Friel, which chronicles the bizarre criminal exploits of Colton Harris-Moore, aka. The Barefoot Bandit. The teenager was suspected of committing over 100 crimes after he escaped from a Pacific Northewest juvenile detention centre in 2008.
He became known as The Barefoot Bandit after a witness saw him fleeing the scene of a crime without any shoes on. The criminal is considered by some to be a modern-day Robin Hood, with tens of thousands of fans on his Facebook page, after such exploits as stealing a plane a flying away from the polive. In January, he was sentenced to six and a half years in prison for a string of federal crimes.
Dustin Lance Black (Milk) is writing the screenplay. David Gordon Green was previously attached to direct, although he was forced to drop out due to the fact his horror remake Suspiria starts production next month. (Source: THR)
Dark Knight Remains On Top Of The US Box Office
The Dark Knight Rises has handily won the US box office race for a third week running, taking $36 million for a very good take so far of $354 million. Batman beat out newcomer Total Recall, which took $26 million. That was at the lower end of expectations, and with suggestions it’s not going down well with audiences, it’s unlikely to keep its grosses up in the coming weeks. It may now be hard for Sony to make back the $125 million is spent on the 2012 makeover of Recall.
The only other new entry in the top 10 is Diary Of A Wimpy Kids: Dog Days, which placed third with $14.7 million. That’s less than the opening gross of the two previous Wimpy Kid movies, but as it only cost $22 million to make, the studio isn’t likely to be worrying too much, especially as the franchise has done very well on DVD.
Ted also had reason to celebrate, as it broke the $200 million mark over the weekend, which certainly isn’t bad for a movie that few people had that many expectations of just a month ago. Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of August 3rd-5th.
Rank | Title | Weekend Gross (millions) | Total Gross to date (millions) |
1 | The Dark Knight Rises | $36.4 | $354.6 |
2 | Total Recall | $26.0 | $26.0 |
3 | Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: Dog Days | $14.7 | $14.7 |
4 | Ice Age: Continental Drift | $8.4 | $131.8 |
5 | The Watch | $6.3 | $25.3 |
6 | Ted | $5.4 | $203.4 |
7 | Step Up Revolution | $5.3 | $23.0 |
8 | The Amazing Spider-man | $4.3 | $250.6 |
9 | Brave | $2.8 | $223.3 |
10 | Magic Mike | $1.3 | $110.8 |
Charlie Sheen & Lindsay Lohan Join Scary Movie 5
Lindsay Lohan and Charlie Sheen have joined the cast of Scary Movie 5 for Dimension Films and director Malcolm D. Lee, at least if E! Online’s reports is anything to go by. Last month Lindsay Lohan went into talks to join the sequel, although it appears her deal is finalised.
It isn’t known what character the actress will play, although it is believed that Charlie Sheen will reprise his role as Tom Logan from Scary Movie 3 and Scary Movie 4, despite being killed off in the last movie. Ashley Tisdale has already signed on to star, although it doesn’t appear Anna Faris will be back for this one.
Malcolm D. Lee will direct from a screenplay by David Zucker (Scary Movie 3, Scary Movie 4).
