Morning After Teaser – A coming of age drama about the fluidity of sexuality

November 2, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

morning-afterThe idea of being sexually fluid is relatively new to most people’s vernacular, and as a result it hasn’t been explored to much in cinema. However, Morning After, which has just finished shooting, is hoping to help change that. The short is described as a ‘proof of concept’ for a future feature film.

Morning After tells the story of a young man called Michael, who comes back to Montreal after spending two years abroad. He finds himself at his friend Edward’s flat with his roommate Dana, her best friend Teegan, and Edward’s “soulmate” Alex. While only knowing Edward, Michael quickly becomes friendly with the rest of the gang as they get involved in a provocative game of chocolate tasting and French-kissing.

Michael finds himself confronted by the openness of the group, who seem to comfortably blur the lines of sexual identity, something Michael has a hard time understanding. Michael comes face to face with a dilemma he’s had for quite some time; of not only questioning his own sexuality, but the notion of sexual identity as a whole, and are labels really necessary? The answer to all his questions lie in, the Morning After.

“Morning After is perfectly timed to speak to the Millennial generation and sexual fluidity in our culture. It presents an incredible opportunity to bring understanding to and raise awareness around sexual identity issues in society,” says filmmaker Patricia Chica.

Outstanding Canadian actors Joey Scarpellino (Les Parents) and Jordana Lajoie (Patrice Lemieux 24-7) both join the team play emancipated Alex and the provocative Dana respectively. The other talented actors are LAMDA-trained Thomas Vallières (the sexually conflicted Michael), Orphan Black regular Zoé de Grand Maison (the vivacious Teegan), and Kristian Hodko (Edward, the catalyst).

Take a look at the teaser below. The first screenings should take place next Spring. [Read more…]

Johnny Depp Joins Fantastic Beasts, But Will He Be Dumbledore’s Gay Love Interest?

November 2, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

johnny-deppWarner Bros. has revealed that Johnny Depp has signed up to appear in the Fantastic Beasts franchise. It appears they were hoping to keep the news a secret, but following the first press screenings of Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them, word slipped out that Depp has a small cameo. That caused Warner to confirm the news and let the world know he’d be getting a much largee role in the sequel.

Although there’s been no confirmation of what role Depp will be playing, hints and rumours suggest it’s Gellert Grindelwald, who Albus Dumbledore developed a close attachment to as a teen – with the future Hogwarts headmaster having a perhaps reciprocated crush on his friend – but then the latter went off and became an incredibly powerful dark wizard. It’s believed Grindelwald’s rise and eventual fall will be intrinsic to the currently planned five Fantastic Beasts movies.

Whether any sort of romantic attachment between Dumbledore and Grindelwald will be shown isn’t known, as in the Harry Potter books Albus doesn’t confirm they were anything more than friends, and says that as an adult he avoided Gellert until their final confrontation. However, we may discover there’s more to it than that.

The first Fantastic Beasts film is set in New York in 1926, which is around the time we know Grindelwald was starting his secretive rise to power in Europe. Director David Yates has confirmed the second movie will transfer the main action to Paris in the 1930s, which suggests it will be increasingly Grindelwald focused. We also know a young Dumbledore himself will show up in the sequels.

The first film in the franchise hits cinemas in mid-November.

New xXx: The Return Of Xander Cage Trailer – Vin Diesel is back as the extreme sports super-spy

November 2, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

xxx_digi_xander_rgb_ov-slideVin Diesel is making a bit of a habit of leaving franchises before returning later. He did it with Fast & Furious, and after playing Xander Cage in 2002’s xXx, he bowed out for the sequel, which starred Ice Cube.

Now, 15 years after the first film, he’s returning to the series for xXx: The Return Of Xander Cage, which also sees Samuel L. Jackson back as Agent Augustus Eugene Gibbons. In the movie, Xander Cage is left for dead after an incident, though he secretly returns to action for a new, tough assignment with his handler Augustus Gibbons. As the character posters below show, it also looks like they might be trying to build the franchise into more of a Fast & Furious style team affair.

And as you can see from the trailer below, the movie is also following in Fast & Furious’ footsteps in the ridiculously OTT action stakes. It should be in cinemas early next year. [Read more…]

New Sing Trailer – Animals get their own talent show in a new animated movie

November 2, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

sing-slideSynopsis: ‘Set in a world like ours but entirely inhabited by animals, Sing stars Buster Moon (Academy Award® winner Matthew McConaughey), a dapper Koala who presides over a once-grand theater that has fallen on hard times.  Buster is an eternal optimist—okay, maybe a bit of a scoundrel—who loves his theater above all and will do anything to preserve it.  Now facing the crumbling of his life’s ambition, he has one final chance to restore his fading jewel to its former glory by producing the world’s greatest singing competition.

‘Five lead contestants emerge: A mouse (Seth MacFarlane) who croons as smoothly as he cons, a timid teenage elephant (Tori Kelly) with an enormous case of stage fright, an overtaxed mother (Academy Award® winner Reese Witherspoon) run ragged tending a litter of 25 piglets, a young gangster gorilla (Taron Egerton) looking to break free of his family’s felonies, and a punk-rock porcupine (Scarlett Johansson) struggling to shed her arrogant boyfriend and go solo.  Each animal arrives under Buster’s marquee believing that this is their shot to change the course of their life.

‘Featuring more than 85 hit songs, Sing is written and directed by Garth Jennings (Son of Rambow, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy) and produced by Chris Meledandri and Janet Healy.  Sing will be released by Universal Pictures.’

The movie will be in cinemas next January. [Read more…]

Eastsiders’ Kit Williamson & Lisa Kudrow Teaming For Gay-Themed Legal Show

November 1, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

kit-williamsonThe TV shows that are hoping get picked up next year are starting to line up, and that includes Rebel Law, which brings together a creative team including EastSiders co-creator Kit Williamson, former Royal Pains showrunner Michael Rauch, along with Lisa Kudrow and Dan Bucatinsky.

Kit Williamson has also been writing the pilot, according to Deadline, which ‘centers on an openly gay attorney who returns home to Mississippi to join his family’s multi-generational law practice where they work through their personal and political differences both inside and outside the courtroom’.

Williamson, who married John Halbach earlier this year, is, of course, also an actor, known for the likes of Eastsiders and Mad Men. However, it’s not mentioned whether he’s also likely to star in the show, or will just executive produce it. At the moment though it’s early days for Rebel Law, as while CBS is developing the show under its deal with Michael Rauch, it’s far from deciding whether it will make it to air.

Disney Planning Live-Action Musical Version Of Snow White

November 1, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

snow-whiteIn the last few years we’ve had a few live-action Snow White movies, most notably Mirror Mirror and Snow White & The Huntsman. However, that hasn’t put Disney off adding the classic fariytale to their ever-lengthening roster of their classic animated movies they hope to turn live-action.

Like the upcoming Beauty & The Beast, with this film they hope to use some of the classic music and songs from the groundbreaking 1937 Snow White & The Seven Dwarves, but with some new music and a new feel. To do that they’ve hired Erin Cressida Wilson, who initially seems an unexpected hire, as her resume includes decidedly non-Disney films such as Secretary, Fur, and The Girl On The Train. However, with a feminist voice and interest in women who don’t follow the rules, she could be an interesting choice.

They’ve also snapped up Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who most recently wrote the songs for the Oscar-tipped La La Land with Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, to write the new music and rework the old. No director is currently attached and it’s not clear when Disney might be hoping to get it in cinemas.

This is actually the second Snow White related movie Disney has put in the works, and earlier this year they started working on Rose Red, about Snow’s sister. In that revisionist take, Snow White’s estranged sister, Rose Red, must undertake a dangerous quest with Grumpy and the other dwarves after Snow takes a bite of a poisoned apple, to find a way to break the curse and bring Snow White back to life. There’s the possibility therefore that Disney may be thinking of this as a franchise, with live-action films telling both tale.
