Former Disney Channel star Bella Thorne’s film career has been growing over the last few years, with roles in movies such as The Duff, Blended and Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. However, she’s suggested that since revealing that she is bisexual earlier this year, she’s faced prejudice from some people in the entertainment industry.
Talking to Maxim, the 19-year-old, said, “It is hard in this business for us. It really is. I have already had people talk shit to me. And it comes from people in the industry, not even fans. I’ve had studios tell me my image is too ‘out there,’ hinting at it but not really saying it.”
She also suggests that her ‘coming out’ was relatively spur of the moment, saying, “I didn’t even think about it. A fan on Twitter asked me, and I’m super open about it. So I just said, ‘Yeah!'”
Thorne’s comments back up what many others have said, which is that while it may be rare to face open homophobia from director, producers and executives, the options for openly LGBT people can become limited with people finding other excuses not to hire them, or using euphemisms such as ‘out there’. While there has been progress, it’s still not always an easy ride.
