ABC Plans TV Show About Religious Minister Who Comes Out As Gay

September 24, 2016 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Jonathan E. Stewart

Jonathan E. Stewart

While gay-themed TV shows have had a mixed reaction, with several failing, the networks thankfully haven’t given up on the idea of series based around LGBT characters. ABC in the US is now planning a new one, having snapped up Grace, according to Deadline.

They’re developing the show, which is about, ‘a family of adult siblings whose lives are upended when their stalwart minister father reveals to his family that he is gay. Grace is described as a serialized drama, a grounded, unfolding saga of a 21st-century American family and the everyday challenges they face as members of a community and as individuals, and how their faith both guides and complicates their lives.’

The series comes from Black List writers, Eyal Podell and Jonathon E. Stewart, with the inspiration being Stewart’s own experiences, as he himself has a preacher father who came out. It’s early days for the series, as at the moment it’s not even known if it will make it to the point of having a pilot episode made, but it could make for an interesting drama.

George Takei’s Allegiance Musical Heading To US Cinemas for One Night Only

September 24, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

allegiance-george-takeiThere aren’t many living people who can say they’ve had a musical written loosely based around their own experiences, but Star Trek legend George Takei can. Allegiance recently played on Broadway, inspired by Takei’s experiences as a child in a Japanese-American internment camp during World War II.

While the show has closed in New York, it’s coming to US cinemas for a one-night-only screening in December. Takei also starred in the show, alonsgside Miss Saigon’s Lea Salonga and Telly Leung. Allegiance has songs by Jay Kuo with a book by Marc Acito, Kuo and Lorenzo Thione.

While it had a mixed reaction when it debuted, most reviews praised the cast – particularly Takei – and the singing, with many being extremely moved by the show’s illumination of a dark corner of US history. It also marks one of the few Broadway musicals where most of the key creative positions were taken by Asian Americans.

The musical will screen in cinemas on December 13th, alongside behind-the-scenes footage. You can find more info here.

Trespass Against Us Trailer – Michael Fassbender wants out of the outlaw life

September 24, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

trespass-against-us-slideMichael Fassbender plays so many role where he had to use accents, it sometimes a surprise when you hear him speak with his own natural Irish brogue. However, he gets to use it in Trespass Against Us, set amongst the Irish traveller community living in Britain.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Trespass Against Us is set across three generations of the Cutler family who live as outlaws in their own anarchic corner of Britain’s richest countryside. Chad Cutler (Michael Fassbender) is heir apparent to his bruising criminal father, Colby (Brendan Gleeson) and has been groomed to spend his life hunting, thieving and tormenting the police. But with his own son, Tyson (Georgie Smith) coming of age, Chad soon finds himself locked in a battle with his father for the future of his young family. When Colby learns of Chad’s dreams for another life he sets out to tie his son and grandson into the archaic order that has bound the Cutler family for generations. He engineers a spectacular piece of criminal business involving a heist, a high-speed car chase and a manhunt, which leaves Chad bruised and bloodied and with his very freedom at stake.’

There’s no release date current set. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

paul-danoA couple of month ago it was revealed that There Will Be Blood and Little Miss Sunshine’s Paul Dano was planning his directorial debut with an adaptation of Richard Ford’s Wildlife. Now he’s found a starry cast to help him, with Variety reporting that Jake Gyllenhaal and Carey Mulligan are attached to star.

Ford’s novel ‘tells the tale of a boy who witnesses his parents’ marriage falling apart after his mom finds another man’. Dano has also co-written the script alongside Zoe Kazan.

Dano comments, “In Richard’s book I saw myself and many others. I have always wanted to make films — and have always known I would make films about family. I couldn’t be happier to have such beautiful collaborators like Carey and Jake leading the way.”

Ed Skrein Joining James Cameron’s Alita: Battle Angel

September 22, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ed-skrein-slideJames Cameron may still be busy working on the sequels to Avatar, but he’s also finding the time to bring one of his other longtime projects to the big screen, Alita: Battle Angel. He won’t be directing, as that job’s gone to Robert Rodriguez, but as producer Cameron will be able to ensure the movie will get made after well over a decade in the works.

Casting has begun, with the latest to join being Deadpool villain Ed Skrein, according to Variety. Assuming his deal goes through, the British actor will be one of the movies villains.

The film itself is about ‘a 26th century cyborg who’s rescued from a scrapyard and reassembled. Her character, Alita, who only remembers her training in a deadly martial art, becomes a hunter-warrior who tracks down vicious criminals.’

Rosa Salazar will play the cyborg, with Jackie Earle Haley and Christoph Waltz also starring. The movie is set for release July 2018, with Fox betting big on it, by giving it a $200 million budget.

Truth Slash Fiction Trailer – Will the show about gay erotic fan fiction become a series?

September 21, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

truth-slash-fictionThe internet has unleashed some unexpected things on the world, one of which is the popularity of Slash Fiction, where people take real and imaginary characters and write their own stories about them, taking things in an extremely erotic direction. A large percentage of these tales are gay-themed, with some of the most popular featuring boyband members who may profess to be straight in real life, but get very, very gay in fan fiction.

A TV series in the waiting, Truth Slash Fiction, takes a long, hard look at this phenomenon. It’s got a great reaction from those who’ve seen the pilot, but so far there’s no word of whether it will become a series. As you’ll see from the pilot, it’s not afraid of laying on the gay action, which has made some feel it’s more likely to find a home on a streaming service than a traditional TV network. We’ll just have to cross our fingers and hope it gets made, as it does like like it could be good.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘“Truth Slash Fiction” is an irreverent dramedy that follows 16-year-old Emma Jacobs as she navigates the indignities of adolescence. Through it all, Emma clings tightly to the songs of the boyband “Truth”: a One Direction-style supergroup whose romantic earnestness is Emma’s only refuge from the often cruel and anxiety-filled social interactions that make up her world. Emma’s love of those sultry-voiced boys leads her to join a group of like-minded fans who channel their devotion in an unusual way: they write slash fiction (ie “gay erotic fan fiction”) involving the band they love so much.’

Jared Leto To Produce And Star In Biopic Of Gay Artist Andy Warhol

September 21, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jared-LetoThere have been quite a few films that have featured artist Andy Warhol – whether it’s Men In Black suggesting he was an alien or a move about his would-be in I Shot Andy Warhol – however, there hasn’t been a really good biopic of the man himself. That’s partly because he’s such an enigmatic figure, who it would be tough to fully pin down on screen.

However, now Jared Leto is stepping up to the plate, to produce and star in a movie about the legendary pop art icon. The movie will be based on Victor Bockris’ 1989 biography, Warhol, with Wolf of Wall Street’s Terence Winter writing the script.

With his bold visual style and ability to incorporate pop culture into art, Warhol became one of the most famous artists of his era. He also had a huge influence on others, especially for those who passed through his ‘factory’, which featured a number of muses, artists and fellow taste-makers, such as trans actress Holly Woodlawn and super-hunk Joe D’allesandro.

Warhol was also gay, although he claimed to be a virgin, sometimes suggesting he was almost asexual except for an interest in voyeurism. However, others have said he did have sex, with the way he talk about his sexuality in public being a deliberate part of his mystique (many have said the public and private Warhols were very different). There’s no doubt that homoeroticism infused his art – indeed, the first works he submitted to a gallery were male nudes that were rejected for being too openly gay.

Leto is likely to face a backlash from some quarters for being a straight-identifying man playing a gay role. It’s not something completely new to him, as he faced something similar after playing a trans women in Dallas Buyers Club, a role for which he won an Oscar.

New Allied Trailer – Brad Pitt & Marion Cotillard get into some wartime action

September 21, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

allied-pitt-cotillard-slideBrad Pitt isn’t having a great time at the moment, but he’ll be hoping for some good news soon, if Allied is well-received. At least that would take his mind off things.

The film is a sweeping romantic thriller, with Pitt and Marion Cotillard as ‘undercover allies who begin to develop a romantic relationship as they plan a high-profile assassination. Pitt plays a British intelligence officer sent to Casablanca on the mission while Cotillard plays a French Resistance fighter who poses as his wife.’ However, Cotillard may be a Nazi spy.

The film is getting an Oscar friendly release towards the end of the year.
