GLAAD To End Its Responsibility Index Of LGBT Characters On TV

September 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

glee-blaine-kurtFor many GLAAD (Gay & Lebsian Alliance Against Defamation) has produced an annual report detailing the number and quality of LGBT characters on major US TV networks. However it’s now decided to end the practice.

Last year was the first time that a network (Fox) was graded as excellent, which seems to have caused GLAAD to feel that the Network Responsibility Index’s job is done and that it should find new way to work to raise the quality of gay representation on television.

GLAAD CEO & President Sarah Kate Ellis commented: “The ninth edition of the NRI marks the first time in the report’s history that a major broadcast network – FOX – received an ‘Excellent’ as a grade. This milestone highlights real change across the media landscape – especially considering that the network received a ‘Failing’ grade in the NRI’s first two editions.”

She added: “GLAAD’s Network Responsibility Index has helped reshape the television landscape, inspiring LGBT characters and storylines that move acceptance forward. As representations of LGBT people in the media continue to rise in number, pushing television networks to make those representations more diverse is more crucial than ever. This requires a different set of tools than the NRI provides, and as such GLAAD will shift focus to its annual TV diversity and transgender reports.”

Instead of the Responsibility Index, the organisation will focus on its Where We Are On TV Report, which is more about the diversity of LGBT representation than the quantity.

In the last Index, both Fox and ABC Family were graded excellent, with only two networks being seen as failing, both of which were cable documentary channels – A&E and History.

It’s believed the companion Responsibility Index, which details LGBT characters on films from the main US distributors, will continue.

The Chinese Government Approves Its First Gay-Themed Movie

September 5, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

seek-mccartneyOver the years there have been a few gay-themed movies set in China and some were even filmed there. However, despite the fact homosexuality is legal in China, the government censors have never permitted a movie with major gay themes to be released there.

However, now for the first tim they have approved a movie that focuses on the relationship between two gay men – one Chinese and one French – Seek McCartney, directed by Wang Chao.

The Guardian reports that, ‘Chao broke the news via a post on the Chinese version of Twitter, Weibo. “This is a small step for the film department,” he said. “And a big step for the members of the film industry.”’

They add, ‘Seek McCartney is a Chinese-French co-production, with the local contribution also helping to explain why censors handed it a release spot. China allows only 34 films a year made by foreign film companies to screen at the world’s second-largest box office, as it seeks to foster interest in home-produced movies and protect them in the face of competition from Hollywood fare. Foreign films given permission to screen are rarely those with adult-orientated themes and tend to be blockbuster fantasy productions with little or no controversial content.’

Previously Chinese gay-themed films have screened in other countries, but none have ever been released domestically – including a couple that have found significant sucess on the film festival circuit. The government has complete control over what is and isn’t allowed to be legally screened in China, and even owns many of the major studios that produce homegrown movies.

Previously some minor gay content has been allowed, such as The Dead End, which featured a same-sex kiss. However mostly it has been cut out and toned down.

Daniel Craig Is Looking Cool In A New Spectre Poster

September 3, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

spectre-poster2It’s not long now until the much anticipated new James Bond movie, Spectre, hits cinemas, with an October 26th UK release set, while the US and most other countries will have to wait until November 6th. With that release just a few weeks away, a new – and rather cool – poster has arrived.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A cryptic message from the past sends James Bond (Daniel Craig) on a rogue mission to Mexico City and eventually Rome, where he meets Lucia Sciarra (Monica Bellucci), the beautiful and forbidden widow of an infamous criminal. Bond infiltrates a secret meeting and uncovers the existence of the sinister organisation known as SPECTRE.

‘Meanwhile back in London, Max Denbigh (Andrew Scott), the new head of the Centre for National Security, questions Bond’s actions and challenges the relevance of MI6, led by M (Ralph Fiennes). Bond covertly enlists Moneypenny (Naomie Harris) and Q (Ben Whishaw) to help him seek out Madeleine Swann (Léa Seydoux), the daughter of his old nemesis Mr White (Jesper Christensen), who may hold the clue to untangling the web of SPECTRE. As the daughter of an assassin, she understands Bond in a way most others cannot.

‘As Bond ventures towards the heart of SPECTRE, he learns of a chilling connection between himself and the enemy he seeks, played by Christoph Waltz.

‘Sam Mendes returns to direct SPECTRE, with Daniel Craig reprising his role as 007 for the fourth time. SPECTRE is produced by Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, from a script by John Logan and Neal Purvis & Robert Wade and Jez Butterworth.’

Cate Blanchett Takes On Lucille Ball Biopic, With Aaron Sorkin Writing

September 3, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Cate-BlanchettAaron Sorkin must have got a taste for biopics as, after The Social Network and the upcoming Steve Jobs, he’s taking on a movie about US TV comedy legend Lucille Ball, which THR reports has Cate Blanchett set to star.

It seems a great mix of actor and writer for the movie (although it should be not Sorkin has officially signed to script the film next), which has been authorised by Ball’s family, and will have her children, Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr., as producers.

There’s little info on whether the film will cover all of Ball’s life or a specific period, but she’s certainly long overdue a biopic, as she is arguably the biggest US TV star ever, thanks to I Love Lucy, The Lucy–Desi Comedy Hour, The Lucy Show, Here’s Lucy and Life with Lucy. She was also very active behind the scenes, with her Desilu Studios (which she co-founded with her husband, Desi Arnaz), having been involved with the likes of Star Trek and Mission: Impossible.

The Danish Girl Trailer – Eddie Redmayne is trangender pioneer Lili Elbe

September 1, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

danish-girl-uk-poster-slideThere’s already a lot of interest in The Danish Girl, which looks set to catch the zeitgeist and the interest in transgender people and issues that has been growing in the public consciousness over the last couple of years. It certainly feels like the right time for a film about a trans* person to find mainstream success.

In The Danish Girl, Eddie Redmayne stars as Lili Elbe, who became one of the first women to undergo sex-reassignment surgery way back in the early 1930s.

Here’s the official synopsis: ‘Based on the book by David Ebershoff, The Danish Girl is the remarkable love story inspired by the lives of Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener (portrayed by Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne [The Theory of Everything] and Alicia Vikander [Ex Machina]), and directed by Academy Award winner Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech, Les Misérables). Lili and Gerda’s marriage and work evolve as they navigate Lili’s groundbreaking journey as a transgender pioneer.’

That doesn’t give a lot of detail, but at film will chart the journey of the person who started out as Danish painter Einar Wegener (Redmayne), and his wife, Gerda. In 1931 Einar is thought to have become the first person in the world to have a sex-change operation, when she became Lili. It’s believed the journey started – at least openly – after Gerda asked Einar to stand in for a female subject that Gerda was supposed to paint. The painting became incredibly popular and Lili began to express who she truly was.

The movie will hit UK cinemas on New Year’s Day 2016, which will ensure it’s ripe for a major awards run. [Read more…]
