Roland Emmerich Talks About The Difficulty Of Getting His Stonewall Movie Made

August 3, 2015 By Tim Isaac 4 Comments

stonewall-pic9-slideWe’ve come a long way in regards to the depiction of LGBT characters on the screen, but despite the success of Brokeback Mountain and a couple of gay-related movies making waves each year, it’s still extremely difficult to fund films where sexuality is the core of the story.

Even someone like Roland Emmerich – who can usually get $100 million plus budgets together to make films like 2012 and The Day After Tomorrow – found it almost impossible to get his planned take on the Stonewall riots funded. You’d have thought with a story people have heard of and a director as well known as Emmerich it wouldn’t have been tough, but it was.

Roland has been telling Vulture about the difficulties, saying, “It was an uphill battle, but we finally did it. We wanted to do it in New York on location, and that failed miserably because it was so expensive.”

He also wanted to ensure it was an ensemble story, but that added extra diffifculties.”If you can cast a central character with one or two famous actors, you have a good chance to get the movie financed,” he says, “but in my case, I knew there was not really one central character in the Stonewall riots.”

Emmerich also had something to say in response to criticisms that have already surfaced about the unfinshed film, based on the fact the synopsis suggests the events of Stonewall will be seen through the eyes of a young, white character called Danny (Jeremy Irvine) – leading to accusations of white-washing and ignoring the trans* people who were central to events in New York in 1969. However, he insists that while Danny may be the way into the story, the movie isn’t ignoring the the diversity. “I think we represented it very well,” he says. “We have drag queens, lesbians, we have everything in the film because we wanted to portray a broader image of what ‘gay’ means.”

It’ll certainly be interesting to see how he does handle it, and hopefully the critics will wait until they’ve seen the movie before writing it off. Emmerich certainly seems devoted, as it’s rumoured he found it so difficult to raise the funds to make the movie through normal channels that he ended up providing some of the budget himself. The film’s out in the US in September.

Arrow Is Getting A Gay, African-American Superhero – Curtis Holt/Mr. Terrific

August 3, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Echo-KellumEver since it began on TV, Arrow has had a large gay fanbase. It’s something it hasn’t been afraid to play-on, with bucket loads of shirtlessness, teasingly homoerotic responses in interviews and an attitude that has seen some accuse it of gay-baiting. However, there hasn’t actually been a vast amount of LGBT characters and activity on the screen (indeed the first season of The Flash had more than three seasons of Arrow).

Now though, executive producer Marc Guggenheim has revealed, “We’re often asked when we’re going to add another LGBT character to the show and our version of Mr Terrific happens to be gay for anyone that cares about that kind of stuff.”

Echo Kellum (Ben and Kate) will play Curtis Holt/Mr. Terrific, a character that’s been part of the DC Comics universe since 1997 (there was a previous Mr. Terrific, aka Terry Sloane, although it’s believed Arrow will concentrate on the more modern take). However, it’s interesting that while nearly all screen versions of comic characters have either retained the sexuality they had on the page or straightened them up, this time around they’re making him gay, something he’s never been in other incarnations.

Indeed in the comics it was the death of his wife and child that turned Holt from billionaire, Gold Medal-winning Decathlete into a supehero. It’ll be interesting to see how that changes in Arrow. All that’s known so far is that he will will join the show as someone who works with Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards).

Greg Berlanti has previously spoken about his desire to have an LGBT character as a series regular rather than as a guest star (which is what they’ve been on both Arrow and The Flash), but it’s not known whether the plan is for Holt to be that regular character.

Deadpool Teaser – Ryan Reynolds’ merc with a mouth has a message for us

August 3, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

deadpool-pic1-slideThe trailer for Deadpool should arrive tomorrow, but ahead of that he’s got a message for us, which seems designed to show that this will be a far more irreverent, sarcastic superhero movie, that sticks far closer to the tone of the character in the comics than how he was in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, DEADPOOL tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life. Starring Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, Gina Carano, T.J. Zoolander 2 Teaser – Derek and his male model pout return

August 3, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

zoolander-2-teaser-slideAfter many, many years of talking about it, Zoolander 2 is finally coming and we’ll have to hope it doesn’t end up being the slightly damp squib that the Anchorman sequel turned out to.

To get us excited the first teaser has arrived, which even features a Stephen Hawking-style narration (although it does point out at the end that it isn’t actually the great scientist), which takes us inside the brain, before suggestion Derek Zoolander perhaps isn’t the greatest example of human intelligence.

Ben Stiller directs once more, from a script by Justin Theroux. Owen Wilson, Christine Taylor and Will Ferrell’s also return, with Kristen Wiig and Penelope Cruz joining the fun.

It’ll be out next year. [Read more…]

Gay-Themed Gale Harold & Van Hansis Starrer Kiss Me Kill Me Gets A Poster

August 1, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

kiss-me-kill-me-poster1While some movies hang around in pre-production for years and years, that wasn’t the case with Kiss Me, Kill Me, which was announced last October, given the greenlight in November, had wrapped production by the end of February and now has a poster.

Director Casper Adreas helped debut the poster on Instagram with the message, ‘The official poster for my upcoming feature film “Kiss Me, Kill Me”was released today! You like? Can’t wait to share the trailer with you next…’

The film is the first gay role for Gale Harold since Queer As Folk, who stars alongside As the World Turns and Eastsiders’ Van Hansis.

Kiss Me, Kill Me is described a contemporary Alfred Hitchcock/Agatha Christie-style ‘who-done-it’, with the mystery centered on Dusty, who confronts his unfaithful boyfriend and blacks-out, only to wake up to find his boyfriend murdered and he’s the prime suspect.

HBO’s Gay President Says It Was ‘Very Painful’ to Cancel Looking

August 1, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

looking-s1-slideLooking arrived with great fanfare on TV in early 2014, but while it attracted a lot of interest and comment, it never became a big ratings winner for HBO. As a result shortly after Looking – Season 2 aired it was revealed that it had been cancelled, although there is still the promise of an upcoming two-hour Looking movie to help wrap things up.

Despite it’s relatively low ratings, it was a difficult cancellation for HBO’s openly gay president of programming Michael Lombardo, who TVLine reports as at the Television Critics Association summer press tour, “I thought the show, creatively, was really doing something that I hadn’t seen on any other show, particularly dealing with gay lives. As a gay man, in particular, I was very proud that there was a show that felt like it was dealing very honestly and openly with gay men and their lives, without putting them into a comedic mode.”

As a result, “ending that show was, on a personal level, very painful for me” but on a business level, the weak ratings “didn’t support us going forward”.

However there is still the promise of the two-hour Looking movie, which will air in early 2016, and will hopefully give us some closure of the story of Patrick, Agustin, Dom, Kevin and co.

First Poster For Roland Emmerich’s Stonewall Movie Arrives

August 1, 2015 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

stonewall-poster1Roland Emmerich may be best known for creating major disasters in everything from The Day After Tomorrow to 2012, but now the gay director is going for something that may be a little more Oscar friendly, with Stonewall.

He was apparently inspired to make the movie after working with young LGBT people in LA, which made him decide that having never really bothered to reflect his own sexuality in his films, it was time for a change.

Now the first poster has arrived, which puts the Stonewall Inn front and centre (perhaps to ward off the critcism that’s already started before anyone’s actually seen the movie, that it looks like it concentrates on young, largely white, cisgender gay men, despite drag queens, trans* and other queer people being front and centre in the 1969 protests – although we should perhaps wait until the film is complete before criticising it).

Here’s the synopsis: ‘STONEWALL is a drama about a fictional young man caught up during the 1969 Stonewall riots. Danny Winters (Jeremy Irvine) is forced to leave behind friends and loved ones when he is kicked out of his parent’s home and flees to New York. Alone in Greenwich Village, homeless and destitute, he befriends a group of street kids who soon introduce him to the local watering hole The Stonewall Inn; however, this shady, mafia-run club is far from a safe-haven.  As Danny and his friends experience discrimination, endure atrocities and are repeatedly harassed by the police, we see a rage begin to build. This emotion runs through Danny and the entire community of young gays, lesbians and drag queens who populate the Stonewall Inn and erupts in a storm of anger. With the toss of a single brick, a riot ensues and a crusade for equality is born.’

It’ll be out later this year.
