More Monkey Business With Four New Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes Posters

December 11, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Dawn-Of-The-Apes-poster4
Every year the release of the big Christmas movies also marks when studios start releasing trailers and posters for the films they hope will be tearing up the box office this summer. In the last week we’ve had promos for the likes of Amazing Spider-man 2 and Godzilla, and now Fox is promising that next Tuesday we’ll get our first proper look at Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes.

Ahead of that a quartet of posters have been released, which you can see above and below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species.’

It’ll be in cinemas next July.

The Impossible’s Juan Antonio Bayona To Helm World War Z Sequel

December 11, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Juan-Antonio-BayonaAfter the production problems World War Z faced – involving ballooning budgets and expensive reshoots – even Paramount was surprised when it became a $500 million grossing hit. The success ensured they wanted a sequel, but it was also clear from early on they didn’t want director Marc Forster – who many have blamed for the first film’s problems (and who reportedly had an extremely fractious relationship with Brad Pitt).

Now they’ve found the man they want to replace Forster for World War Z 2, as Spanish filmmaker Juan Antonio Bayona has signed on to direct World War Z 2, according to THR. Bayona s best known The Orphanage and last year’s The Impossible

Brad Pitt is set to reprise his role as U.N. employee Gerry Lane, although there’s no news on the exact plot, although it’s safe to assume it will continue to look at the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse. No writers are attached to the sequel yet, although it’s reported that Juan Antonio Bayona will oversee the writing process. The director was on a very short list of contenders just a few weeks back before landing the job.

Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return – Lea Michele gets animated in the Emerald City

December 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s taken a long time to get Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return to the screen. It was announced before Oz The Great And Powerful was in the works, but it’s only now we get a trailer, ahead of its release next May.

The movie is a sequel to L. Frank Baum’s Wizard Of Oz, showing what happens when Dorothy returns to the magical land.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In LEGENDS OF OZ: DORTOHY’S RETURN, Dorothy returns to Kansas to find it devastated by the tornado that had whisked her away to Oz. The home she has been so desperate to return to is severely damaged, and the townspeople are packing up and moving out. But shortly after arriving in Kansas, Dorothy is magically transported back to Oz.

‘She finds out that Oz is in trouble, and the people there need her help. Dorothy’s old friends – the Scarecrow, Tin Man and the formerly Cowardly Lion – have disappeared and Oz is in a state of decay. As Dorothy journeys to find her friends, she encounters a number of new companions and problems including a man made of marshmallows who can’t think for himself; a china doll princess whose bossiness is a cover for her fragility; and a tugboat with as many personalities as he has pieces. Dorothy must help this odd group band together against a new villain – a wicked Jester who thinks all of Oz should be under his control.’

Lea Michele, Dan Aykroyd, Kelsey Grammer, Jim Belushi, Martin Short, Roger S. Baum. Megan Hilty, Hugh Dancy, Oliver Platt, Patrick Stewart, and Bernadette Peters lend their voices. [Read more…]

Kidnapped For Christ Documentary Seeks Funding Ahead Of Slamdance Premiere

December 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s been announced that the documentary Kidnapped For Christ has been selected to premiere at the Slamdance Film Festival in January, but ahead of that it’s seeking some final completion funding via Kickstarter. The money will be used to complete the sound, music and HD transfers for what sounds like it could be a fascinating and chilling topic that touches on LGBTQ topics.

You can take a look above for a message about the film and campaign from two of the movie’s executive producers, Lance Bass  of ‘NSYNC fame and Mike C. Manning  (Disney’s Cloud 9 and The Real World).

The controversial film follows the stories of several American teenagers who were forcibly taken from their homes and sent to an Evangelical Christian reform school known as Escuela Caribe, located in the Dominican Republic. The school is advertised as a “therapeutic Christian boarding school” when in reality, Escuela Caribe used classic brainwashing techniques to break down and rebuild young minds.

The main protagonist (David) is a teen from Colorado who was sent to the school because of his sexuality. Shot largely inside the school, the film features David’s plight as he is forced to conform. The film also features Tai, a 16-year-old Haitian-American girl who was sent away after acting out as a result of childhood traumas, and Beth, a 15-year old who suffers from a debilitating anxiety disorder.

It sounds like a fascinating and chilling film, so if you’d like to help out, head over to Kickstarter. [Read more…]

Ian McKellen Advised Not To Go To Russia Due To Anti-Gay Laws

December 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ian-mckellenIt’s become difficult for pro-gay celebrities in relation to Russia recently due the new laws banning the ‘promotion of non-traditional sexual relationship to minors’. Although Putin insists it’s not an issue and will supposedly protect youths, other more zealous lawmakers are already trying to use the laws to try and silence both gay celebs and allies, whether they’re talking to minors or not.

Now Ian McKellen has been talking about how it’s affected him, telling the Radio Times, “Imagine trying to be a gay actor, a gay anything in modern Russia?. Where to be positively oneself, to be affectionate in public with someone you love of the same gender, or to talk of that love in the hearing of anyone under 18, will put you in prison? That’s why I can’t go to Russia.”

He added he had been told by the Foreign Office that “they couldn’t protect me from those laws,” and so as a well-known gay advocate his safety could not be guaranteed there.

McKellen adds that he cannot believe this is the situation “in the land of Tchaikovsky, Diaghilev, Rudolf Nureyev — gay artists whose sexuality informed their work.”

The UK Foreign Office has recently changed its advice to travellers to Russia, warning them of “a degree of intolerance” of homosexuality, and that people should bear that in mind if they decide to go there.

Better Midler To Play Mae West In A William Friedkin Directed Biopic

December 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bette-midlerGay icon Bette Midler doesn’t make too many movies these days, but she’s stepping up to play the legendary Mae West in an HBO biopic, with The Exorcist’s William Friedkin directing, according to Deadline.

The movie is based on West’s autobiography Goodness Had Nothing To Do With It, with another gay legend, Harvey Fierstein, providing the script. As Deadline notes, the book, ‘chronicles West’s rise fto stardom when she takes New York by storm after writing and starring in her scandalous Broadway show Sex and battles authorities over obscenity charges. Instead of taking the road of a wide-eyed Hollywood ingenue, West forged her own path, writing and starring in her own risqué plays, including her breakthrough Sex, which had her prosecuted and sentenced to 10 days in prison for “corrupting the morals of youth.”

‘The notoriety fueled her career and didn’t stop her from tackling taboo subjects in her next plays, including 1928 hit Diamond Lil, about a racy 1890s woman, which opened the doors to Hollywood for her. West was a late arrival, signing her first movie deal with Paramount at 39, but went on to make a string of hits, becoming one of the highest-grossing stars of the 1930s while still finding ways to push the envelope and keeping studio censors busy.’

She’s a fascinating figure, who championed female sexuality at a time when it was considered absolutely shocking.

However while West was 39 when she went to Hollywood, Midler is already 68, so it’ll be interesting to see if Bette will be Mae in her younger days, or if she’ll just play her in her later years. There’s no doubt though that she’s got Mae’s in your face style and way with words.

Godzilla Teaser Trailer – Plus a poster for the surprisingly awesome looking Aaron Johnson monster movie

December 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After Roland Emmerich’s incredibly underwhelming 1998 Godzilla movie, you could be forgiven for wondering whether new take on the classic Japanese monster would be another failure. However this trailer makes a great case for this being something far more intense and potentially awesome.

As an intro to the film it’s a great one!

Here’s the synopsis: An epic rebirth to Toho’s iconic Godzilla, this spectacular adventure, from Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, pits the world’s most famous monster against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity’s scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence.

Gareth Edwards directs “Godzilla,” which stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson (“Kick-Ass”), Oscar® nominee Ken Watanabe (“The Last Samurai,” “Inception”), Elizabeth Olsen (“Martha Marcy May Marlene”), Oscar® winner Juliette Binoche (“The English Patient,” “Cosmopolis”), and Sally Hawkins (“Blue Jasmine”), with Oscar® nominee David Strathairn (“Good Night, and Good Luck.,” “The Bourne Legacy”) and Bryan Cranston (“Argo,” TV’s “Breaking Bad”).

Jupiter Ascending Trailer – The Wachowskis return to sci-fi and Channing Tatum gets Elfin

December 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Wachowskis are coming back with Jupiter Ascending, and if this trailer is anything to go by, it’s going to look as awesome as you’d hope from Lana and Andy. There’s certainly some unexpected imagery, including Channing Tatum channelling his inner elf.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis star in “Jupiter Ascending,” an original science fiction epic adventure from filmmakers Lana and Andy Wachowski.

‘Jupiter Jones (Kunis) was born under a night sky, with signs predicting that she was destined for great things. Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning other people’s houses and an endless run of bad breaks. Only when Caine (Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along—her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.

‘From the streets of Chicago to far flung galaxies whirling through space, “Jupiter Ascending” is written and directed by the Wachowskis. Award-winning producer Grant Hill, with whom they have collaborated since “The Matrix” Trilogy, is producing, together with Lana Wachowski and Andy Wachowski. Roberto Malerba and Bruce Berman serve as executive producers.’

It’s due out next July. [Read more…]

Official Synopsis For Johnny Depp Starrer Transcendence Revealed

December 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

transcendence-preview-pic1There’s been a lot of interest in Transcendence, the directorial debut of Christopher Nolan’s cinematographer Wally Pfister. However Pfister has learned a few things about secrecy from Nolan, so while there have been bits and pieces about what the movie is about, there’s not been much official.

However now an official synopsis has been released, giving us some more info on the movie, which stars Johnny Depp, Rebecca Hall, Morgan Freeman, Cillian Murphy, Kate Mara and Paul Bettany.

Here is is: ‘Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) is the foremost researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence, working to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions. His highly controversial experiments have made him famous, but they have also made him the prime target of anti-technology extremists who will do whatever it takes to stop him. However, in their attempt to destroy Will, they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed—to be a participant in his own transcendence. For his wife Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) and best friend Max Waters (Paul Bettany), both fellow researchers, the question is not if they can…but if they should. Their worst fears are realized as Will’s thirst for knowledge evolves into a seemingly omnipresent quest for power, to what end is unknown. The only thing that is becoming terrifyingly clear is there may be no way to stop him.’
