Disney Takes Over The Indiana Jones Franchise From Paramount

December 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

indiana-jones-harrison-fordIndIt was reported recently that Harrison Ford only agreed to appear in the new Star Wars movies if the now Disney owned Lucasfilm moved forward on another Indiana Jones movie – however the problem has been that Paramount still owned the rights to Indy, making things more difficult.

Now the way has been cleared as Walt Disney Studios has reached a distribution and marketing agreement for the Indiana Jones franchise. Paramount retains its rights to the original four films in the franchise, and they’ll also get a portion of the cash from any future instalments that are produced and released.

It’s a good deal for Paramount, as they’ve already made tens of million from a similar arrangement where Disney took over the distribution of Marvel movies that Paramount was set to release, allowing them to get cash for doing absolutely nothing, but also allow Disney complete control after they bought Marvel.

There’s been no official announcement about a fifth Indy movie, but it seems very likely not Disney has the rights.

Olivia Cooke & Douglas Smith Join Ouija Movie

December 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

douglas-smithA movie version of Ouija has been in the works for a long time, but now it’s finally moving forward with the news that it’s found its young leads, as Olivia Cooke and Douglas Smith are onboard according to Variety.

Universal Pictures is backing the movie, with Stiles White directing. No character or specific plot details have been released, although it will be based around the classic planchette device that people have used for years to supposedly talk to spirits. Olivia Cooke is best known for her role in Bates Motel, while Douglas Smith most recently starred in Antiviral and Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters.

It’s certainly a different movie to the one it once was, as it was once planned as a big $100 million family adventure with McG directing, but it’ll now be smaller and perhaps creepier, with a $5 million budget.

Filming begins next week in Los Angeles.

Star Trek 3 Gets Two New Writers, Alongside Franchise Veteran Roberto Orci

December 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

star-trek-into-darkness-imax-posterJJ Abrams may have moved on to Star Wars, but he’s still producing Star Trek 3. There’s also a bit of change on the screenwriting team, as it seems Alex Kurtzman now won’t be penning this one, although his writing partner Roberto Orci is still onboard, and now THR reports that Paramount Pictures has brought on writers J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay to co-write the screenplay for Star Trek 3, alongside franchise veteran Roberto Orci.

The movie project does not have a title, director (although Joe Cornish is the top of the list at the moment) or a scheduled production start date yet, although Paramount has previously said they want to release it summer 2016, which would mark the 50th anniversary of the original Star Trek TV series, created by Gene Roddenberry.

Expect to hear a lot more about Star Trek 3 soon.

Dustin Hoffman Joins Ben Foster In Lance Armstrong Biopic

December 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Dustin-HoffmanShooting started a while ago on Stephen Frear’s biopic of Lance Armstrong, but that doesn’t mean the full cast has been announced, as it’s only now that it’s been announced, via Deadline, that Dustin Hoffman has signed on to star.

Ben Foster is set to play as Lance Armstrong, with Chris O’Dowd portraying the journalist who helped uncover the massive doping scandal that tarnished his seven Tour de France victories. Jesse Plemons, Guillaume Canet and Lee Pace also star in unspecified roles. It isn’t known who Hoffman is playing.

Stephen Frears is directing from a screenplay by John Hodge. Production is currently underway in Europe, but Dustin Hoffman won’t be on set until the shoot moves to the US for the final stages of production, so it probably won’t be a massive role.

Devil’s Due Trailer – Newlyweds get pregnant by dark forces!

December 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Horror is starting early next year, with amid-January release set for Devil’s Due. Now a new trailer for the movie has arrived, which you can see above.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘After a mysterious, lost night on their honeymoon, a newlywed couple finds themselves dealing with an earlier-than-planned pregnancy. While recording everything for posterity, the husband begins to notice odd behavior in his wife that they initially write off to nerves, but, as the months pass, it becomes evident that the dark changes to her body and mind have a much more sinister origin.’

‘Evil’ pregnancies have always been popular in horror, so it’ll be interesting to see how this film deals with it. [Read more…]

Peyton Reed To Direct The Fifth Beatle, About Their Gay Manager Brian Epstein

December 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

peyton-reedFor years there’s been talk of making a biopic of Beatles manager Brian Epstein, but nothing has come of it so far. Currently there are two movies about him in the works, and now one of them has a director, as Deadline reports that Peyton Reed has signed on to direct The Fifth Beatle.

We first heard about the movie in October, when it was announced that very unusually for a Beatles based film, the adaptation of Vivek J. Tiwary’s graphic novel has been given full access to bands’ music library.

The official synopsis from the project’s website says, ‘THE FIFTH BEATLE recounts the untold true story of Epstein, the brilliant visionary who discovered The Beatles and helped guide the band to international stardom as their manager, securing their first record deal at a time when no one else was interested, and successfully bringing them to the world stage with a scale and scope no music impresario had ever attempted. Epstein’s boast – “The Beatles will be bigger than Elvis!” – seemed absurd in 1961, but proved humbly prophetic by 1967. When he died at the age of 32, he was an extremely successful artist manager and entertainment impresario, but a painfully lonely young man.’

What that doesn’t mention is that the graphic novel also deals by Epstein’s issues with sexuality and religion – he was gay, which was known to those close to him, including the Beatles, but not generally outside his circle.

Peyton Reed commented,”From the moment I read Vivek’s graphic novel, I knew I wanted to be the person to bring Brian’s story to the big screen. I’m a lifelong Beatles fan, obviously, but it’s Brian’s fascinating life that really blew me away and drew me to this project. He’s the ultimate outsider who, against all odds, became the ultimate insider. He was responsible for shepherding the most popular artistic expression of “love” in the history of modern culture, and yet he wasn’t allowed to express his own love during that time.”

Shooting will begin sometime next year with the Yes Man and Bring It On helmer directing.

Kevin Hart Teams With Basketball Star Lebron James For Ballers

December 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

kevin-hartQuite a few sports stars have tried to make the movie to film, from OJ Simpson to Michael Jordan. Now another is making the move, as NBA superstar LeBron James is planning to star in Ballers. Now Deadline reports that comedy star Kevin Hart is also onboard for the movie.

The movie is about a man (Hart) who has spent his life living in the shadow of his basketball superstar brother (James). However, he gets a chance to shine during a weekend fantasy basketball camp in Miami.

The script was originally written by Lowell Ganz, Babaloo Mandel and Peter Steinfeld, but now Hart will re-write it alongside Joey Wells, Chris Spencer and Harry Ratchford.

No director is currently attached, but the producers will begin the search for one after the new screenplay has been completed. Production will hopefully get underway next summer, once the current NBA season has finished.

December 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

amanda-seyfriedAmanda Seyfried has signed up to star in Universal Pictures’s upcoming comedy He’s F***ing Perfect, according to Variety. Emma Stone was previously up for the role, but the very busy actress is no longer involved.

The movie is about an Internet-savvy but rather conniving woman who cooks up a plan to have her friend dump her new boyfriend so that she can date him. Lauryn Kahn wrote the script with Jake Szymanski directing the comedy film.

Amanda Seyfried will next be seen in Seth MacFarlane upcoming comedy western A Million Ways to Die in the West. It’s 100% not clear when He’s F***ing Perfect will shoot.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Trailer – Andrew Garfield takes on multiple villains

December 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After days of promising The Amazing Spider-man 2 trailer is finally here. It’s looking pretty cool, with plenty of Spidey swinging around, although it definitely concentrates of the villains – Rhino, Electro and Dane DeHaan becoming Green Goblin.

Eagle-eyed viewers will also spot hints at villains for Spider-man 3 & 4 with the tentacles of Doctor Octopus and Vulture’s wings.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker finds that a greater conflict lies ahead.

‘It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp.’

The film’s in UK cinemas next April. [Read more…]

Bryan Singer Announces X-Men: Apocalypse For 2016

December 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bryan-singerIt’s been clear for a while that Fox wants to build X-Men into as big and as frequent a franchise as it can, but there’s been no news on what was coming after next year’s X-Men: Days Of Future Past. However Bryan Singer has now let some news slip, simply tweeting “#Xmen #Apocalypse 2016!”

Fox seems to have confirmed the news, with Exhibitor Relations tweeting, ‘No stopping the X-Men franchise. Fox’s X-MEN: APOCALYPSE will drop May 27, 2016.’

In the X-Men mythology, Apocalypse is an 5,000 year old mutant with all sorts of powers emanating from the fact he can control all the molecules in his body – meaning he can shape-shift, has superhuman power, can interface with technology and his regeneration abilities have allowed him to live for millennia.

However, what’s not know at the moment is whether the villainous Apocalypse will be going up against the First Class mutants, the original cast, a mix of the two, or indeed if this will be the start of a brand new spin-off.
