Running Time: 102 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: January 9th 2017 (UK)

In rural Texas, Toby Howard (Chris Pine) and his brother Tanner (Ben Foster) are on a bank robbing spree. Inevitably the law is after them, with days-from-retirement Texas Ranger Marcus (Jeff Bridges) and his Cherokee partner Alberto (Gil Birmingham) on their trail.

The quiet Toby and livewire Tanner are trying to steal enough to prevent the reverse mortgage on their dead mother’s ranch from foreclosing on the property, with $43,000 needed to secure the future of Toby’s son and ex-wife. However, their crime spree inevitably turns deadly, which may leave them with few ways out. [Read more…]

Warcraft: The Beginning (Blu-ray Review)

October 10, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Travis Fimmel, Paul Patton, Toby Kebbell, Ben Schnetzer, Ben Foster
Director: Duncan Jones
Running Time: 122 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: October 10th 2016 (UK)

In the last few years, Hollywood has become increasingly obsessed with the fast-growing Chinese market. Warcraft: The Beginning is ample evidence as to why that is. The movie was a massive flop in the US, grossing less than $50 million there on a $160 million budget. However, it made over $220 million in China, meaning that instead of being one of the biggest box office disasters ever, they’re now thinking of making a sequel.

The disparity between the US and China reception of this movie is a bit difficult to explain. While American audiences certainly had a lot of choice this summer, it’s a surprise a few more didn’t choose this film, as it’s quite fun. [Read more…]

Hell or High Water Trailer – Ben Foster & Chris Pine go bank robbing

May 12, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hell-or-high-water-trailer-slideDue to premiere soon at Cannes, the first trailer for Hell or High Water has now arrived, which you can take a look at below. The movie stars Chris Pine and Ben Foster, but they’re certainly not in pretty-boy mode.

The film, based on Taylor Sheridan’s black-listed script, follows a divorced dad and his ex-con brother resort to a desperate scheme in order to save their family’s farm in West Texas. As the trailer shows, that involves a lot of crime and bank robbing, but also plenty of bonding between the brother – plus Jeff Bridges in sheriff mode, which is never a bad thing.

Following its Un Certain Regard Canned debut, it’s heading for release in the US in August. Watch the trailer below. [Read more…]

New Warcraft: The Beginning Trailer – Travis Fimmel & Ben Foster take us into a fantasy world

March 29, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

warcraft the beginning slide2They’ve sure taken a long time to bring us Warcraft: The Beginning. The film shot almost two years ago, but as this trailer shows, the reason for that is that it needed an awful lot of post-production and special effects work to create a convincing fantasy world, which wouldn’t seeming lacking in comparison the Peter Jackson’s take on Middle Earth.

Here’s the snyopsis: ‘The peaceful realm of Azeroth stands on the brink of war as its civilization faces a fearsome race of invaders: Orc warriors fleeing their dying home to colonize another.  As a portal opens to connect the two worlds, one army faces destruction and the other faces extinction.  From opposing sides, two heroes are set on a collision course that will decide the fate of their family, their people and their home.

‘So begins a spectacular saga of power and sacrifice in which war has many faces, and everyone fights for something.

‘Directed by Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code) and written by Charles Leavitt and Jones, the film starring Travis Fimmel, Paula Patton, Ben Foster, Dominic Cooper, Toby Kebbell, Ben Schnetzer, Rob Kazinsky and Daniel Wu is a Legendary Pictures, Blizzard Entertainment and Atlas Entertainment production.’

The movie will be in cinemas on May 30th. Take a look at the new trailer below. [Read more…]

The Program (Blu-ray Review)

February 18, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Ben Foster, Chris O'Dowd, Jesse Plemons, Lee Pace, Guillaume Canet
Director: Stephen Frears
Running Time: 103 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: February 15th 2016 (UK)

Over the years, numerous movies about Lance Armstrong have been in the works but never got made. Indeed, one was about to move forward just as he admitted he had doped for his entire career. It’s almost a shame we don’t have a movie from when he was almost universally admired as a hero, so we could compare it to the darker world of The Program.

At the start of the movie Lance (Ben Foster) is an okay but unexceptional cyclist, who few think will ever do anything special. After overcoming testicular cancer, he returns with a passion to win, and knowing the world of cycling is riddled with cheats taking performance-enhancing drugs, he decides he will do the same, enlisting the help of Michele Ferrari (Guillaume Canet) to allow him to set up a ‘Program’ that will help him win, as well as arranging to have a team built around him that will ensure a Tour de France victory. New The Finest Hours Trailer – Chris Pine and co. face off against a mighty storm

November 11, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

finest-hours-trailer-slideChris Pine, CaseyAflleck, Ben Foster, Holliday Grainger and Eric Bana are getting heroic in the true-life tale with The Finest Hours, which now has a new trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In February of 1952, one of the worst storms to ever hit the East Coast struck New England, damaging an oil tanker off the coast of Cape Cod and literally ripping it in half. On a small lifeboat faced with frigid temperatures and 70-foot high waves, four members of the Coast Guard set out to rescue the more than 30 stranded sailors trapped aboard the rapidly-sinking vessel. “The Finest Hours” is the story of their heroic mission, which is still considered the greatest small boat rescue in Coast Guard history.’

Disney will release the movie in cinemas early next year.

Warcraft: The Beginning Trailer – Into the fantasy world with Travis Fimmel & Ben Foster

November 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

warcraft-poster1-slideFrom the evidence of this trailer, Warcraft: The Beginning certainly looks like it’s going after Middle Earth’s fantasy crown. It definitely seems inspired by Peter Jackson’s Tokien movies while also doing a good job of feeling like it’s set in the world of the Warcraft computer game.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The peaceful realm of Azeroth stands on the brink of war as its civilization faces a fearsome race of invaders: Orc warriors fleeing their dying home to colonize another. As a portal opens to connect the two worlds, one army faces destruction and the other faces extinction. New The Program Trailer – Ben Foster takes on Lance Armstrong in the new biopic

September 13, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

the-program-ben-foster2Few sport doping scandals have had a bigger impact than Lance Armstrong, largely because his fame was as much due to his inspirational story (surviving testicular cancer and coming back to be a champion) as it was about what he did on a bike. He was also one of the biggest anti-doping spokespeople, before admitting that his career had been extensively aided by banned performance-enhancing subjects.

From the moment he made his confession, various film folk have been planning a biopic, and the first to reach us is The Program, starring Ben Foster.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From Academy Award nominated director Stephen Frears (The Queen, Philomena) and producers Working Title Films (The Theory Of Everything, Everest, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), comes the true story of the meteoric rise and fall of one of the most celebrated and controversial men in recent history; Lance Armstrong, the world-renowned Tour de France champion.

‘The world needs heroes and Lance Armstrong was the ultimate sporting hero. Following a gruelling battle with cancer, Lance returned to his cycling career in 1999 more determined than ever and with his sights set firmly on winning the Tour de France. With the help of the infamous Italian physician Michele Ferrari and team director Johan Bruyneel, he developed the most sophisticated doping program in the history of the sport. This program allowed Lance and his American teammates to dominate the world of cycling, winning the Tour an unprecedented seven times.

‘However not everyone believed the fairytale…Sunday Times journalist, David Walsh, at first charmed by Lance’s charisma and talent, soon began to question whether the ‘world’s greatest athlete’ was ‘clean’. Walsh sought to unveil the truth, his ensuing battle with Armstrong risked his own career, ostracised him from the cycling community and cost his paper, The Sunday Times, hundreds of thousands in legal costs. But the indefatigable Walsh eventually uncovered the truth when a select few prepared to talk came forward, exposing one of the greatest deceptions of our time.’

It’ll be in UK cinemas on October 16th. [Read more…]

The Finest Hours Trailer – Chris Pine, Ben Foster & Eric Bana deal with the ultimate storm

July 8, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

finest-hours-trailer-slideChris Pine hasn’t had a huge amount of luck as a leading man outside the Star Trek franchise – and in his case it really does seem like bad luck, as he is pretty good. He’ll be hoping for a hit with The Finest Hours, which looks like it’ll be mixing action, pathos and a bit of a period feel.

The Program Trailer – Ben Foster is Lance Armstrong in Stephen Frears’ biopic

June 11, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

the-program-ben-fosterThe moment it became clear Lance Armstrong was finally going to admit to doping during his cycling career, Hollywood immediately jumped in and put several biopics in the works. The first to arrive is The Program, directed by Stephen Frears and with Ben Foster in the lead role.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From Academy Award® nominated director Stephen Frears (The Queen, Philomena) and producers Working Title (The Theory Of Everything, Everest, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), comes the true story of the meteoric rise and fall of one of the most celebrated and controversial men in recent history, Lance Armstrong.

‘Inspired by the award winning book “Seven Deadly Sins” by David Walsh, and featuring a stellar cast including Ben Foster, Chris O’Dowd, Guillaume Canet (Tell No One) and Jesse Plemons (Breaking Bad), this tense and suspenseful thriller looks at how one of the greatest deceptions in the modern era was uncovered while Armstrong convinced the world he was a hero, winning the Tour de France seven times.’

It’ll be out in the UK towards the end of the year. [Read more…]
