Ethan Hawke Going Shakespearean Again For Cymbeline

July 31, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ethan-hawkeEthan Hawke likes a bit of Shakespeare, whether on stage or in the likes of his 1999 film version of Hamlet. Now he’s book another Bardic role, taking on his lesser known play Cymbeline, with Hawke reteaming with Hamlet director Michael Almereyda for the film.

As with their earlier film it’ll be a modern day take, although retaining the original text. Variety reports that, ‘The film will portray a battle between dirty cops and a drug dealing biker gang set in a corruption-riddled 21st century America. Shakespeare’s play centered on the daughter of the British king Cymbeline, who discovers she has secretly married a man raised in her father’s court, resulting in his banishment from the court.’

The film starts shooting August 19th in New York, which should allow Hawke some time to prepare for another Shakespearean role, as he’s due to star in a stage version of Macbeth in November.

Nicolas Cage Sees Paul Schrader’s Dying Of The Light

July 31, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Nicholas-CagePaul Schrader’s much talked about The Canyons is finally hitting US cinemas next month, and now he’s preparing for his next film. He’s been talking to the people at The Playlist, telling them that he’s lining up Nicolas Cage to star in his movie, The Dying Of The Light.

Schrader isn’t the first to take on Schrader’s script for the movie, as in 2010 Nicolas Winding Refn was attached to helm, but pulled out when over creative differences with his star at the time, Harrison Ford. Now it seems Schrader is set to helm himself, although it appears Refn may still produce.

The movies is about ‘a C.I.A. agent who starts to become afflicted with blindness while on his last mission’. There’s no news on exactly when it might shoot.

David Oyelowo & David Gyasi Join Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar

July 31, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

David-OyelowoChristopher Nolan seems keen to have just about everybody in Interstellar. The likes of Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Michael Caine, Bill Irwin, Casey Affleck, Mackenzie Foy, John Lithgow, Wes Bentley and Topher Grace have already signed up. Now they’ve been joined by David Oyelowo (Lee Daniels’ the Butler) and David Gyasi (Cloud Atlas).

The movie revolves around a journey into outer space that pushes humanity’s knowledge of science and technology. The film was initially inspired based on the scientific theories of Kip S. Thorne, who believes that wormholes exist and can be used for time travel. Christopher Nolan is directing from a screenplay he co-wrote with his brother Jonathan Nolan.

Nolan is being predictably secretive about the specifics of his film though, so there’s no news on who any of the actors will play.

The film will shoot later this year, with a November 7th, 2014 release date already set.

Eytan Fox’s Cupcakes To Open Iris Prize 2013 Festival

July 31, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The 2013 Iris Prize is gearing up for this year’s edition, which runs from October 9th-13th. While the festival focuses on LGBT short films, awarding one filmmakers its prestigious prize that allows them to make another film, they also run a great programme of feature-length movies.

The organisers of the 2013 Iris Prize have now confirmed the opening and closing night films for this year’s annual Cardiff based fest. Festival favourite Eytan Fox (Yossi & Jeagar, Yossi) returns with a special preview screening of his new feel good film, Cupcakes, which centres around a group of Tel Aviv friends who end up representing Israel in a Eurovision style competition.

“I’m thrilled that we are opening with Cupcakes,” said Festival Chair Andrew Pierce. “We have a long tradition of opening our festival with the work of Eytan Fox, having screened The Bubble in 2007 and Yossi in 2012. Both films were warmly received by our audience. I’m sure they will be thrilled, as I am, with the news that we open this year with his latest offering.”

The festival then closes with Bruno & Earlene Go To Vegas by Simon Savory. The British filmmaker has already been thrilling audiences in the US with his first feature, which he describes as a love letter to the outsiders, the weird and wonderful people who exist on the fringe, on the outside looking in.

“I’m delighted to have this opportunity to celebrate the work of Simon Savory,” added Andrew. “We believe he is a fresh voice with a strong commitment to bringing diverse stories to the big screen. We are also excited to see Simon return to Cardiff and the festival as a successful filmmaker having attended previous festivals supporting others when he worked for Peccadillo Pictures.”

And if you want to know exactly why you should be watching Bruno & Earlene, check out some of the film’s hotties here.

Ahead of the official launch of the full festival programme on the 23rd August, the organisers also confirmed that popular performer Amy Lamé will return to host the 2013 Awards Show. London based Lamé has been credited with taking the new look awards to another level in 2012, keeping the show lively and fresh without forgetting the gravitas of the occasion and the awarding of the £25,000 Iris Prize.

Margarita Trailer – Take a look at the lesbian-themed festival flick

July 31, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After screening at the likes of the London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival and Outfest, Wolfe Video has set an autumn US release for Margarita, and they’ve also released a trailer, which you can see above.

Here’s the synopsis: Margarita the nanny is muse to all: she’s a whipsmart bookkeeper, can fix everything from a hot tub to a smoothie, and could put Martha Stewart to shame with her effortless domestic engineering. Not to mention she’s sexy as a jaguar, sweet as dulce de leche, and regularly piques everyone’s interest…in more ways than one. She’s everything power couple Gail and Ben and their teenage daughter Mali could ask for in a gorgeous young live-in from Mexico.

But when finances shrink and they can no longer afford her, Margarita’s livelihood and the household stability are suddenly on muy shaky ground. Is this a crisis that Jane the saucy law school girlfriend or Carlos the hot Brazilian handyman can solve? Family, friends, and lovers must come together to keep her in town and the “proposals” start flying.

Filmed in a quaint snowy Toronto suburb against a steamy Latin soundtrack, this Canuck dramedy features Nicola Correia Damude (Degrassi: The Next Generation) as scrumptious stalwart Margarita, Canadian television star Patrick McKenna as pothead doctor Ben, Claire Lautier (Elf, Law and Order) as bi-curious mom Gail, and Maya Ritter who also starred in filmmaking duo Dominique Cardona and Laurie Colbert’s first feature Finn’s Girl (Frameline31) as tomboy teen Mali. July 31, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Produced by gay movie luminary Charlie David (Mulligans, Judas Kiss), Coming Out is a 12-part French-Canadian series, set in Montreal. The gay-themed series is coming to DVD in the US, so take a look at whether it’ll be worth getting hold of a copy above.

Here’s the synopsis: The explosive lives, loves and losses of an intermingled group of Montréalers are explored as they confront the subject of difference. Managing a modern relationship can be a mess. Single? Attached? Married? Divorced? Open? Closed? The most common answer is ‘It’s complicated.’

Get ready to come out with these characters as they negotiate acceptance, prejudice and just how much they’re willing to risk in the pursuit of love and happiness.

Mat (Mathieu Blanchard) is a gay fashion photographer with nothing out of his reach until his ex, Ian (Marc-André Poliquin) resurfaces. Meanwhile, Hugo (Patrick Martin) pursues a secret relationship with Olivier (Sébastien Beaulac), a married father who keeps the closet door firmly shut. And finally, Téo (Dhanaé Audet-Beaulieu), is a young man who turns to drugs and prostitution after a messy coming out to his parents. X-Men: Days Of Future Past Viral Video – Meet the Sentinels and Peter Dinklage’s Trask Industries

July 31, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

X-Men: Days Of Future Past isn’t out until May 23rd, 2013, but Fox is starting the hype early, hoping plenty of people will be getting excited about the old X-Men teaming up with the First Class cast. Now we’ve got a viral video, introducing us to Trask Industries, run by Peter Dinklage’s Bolivar Trask, and the Sentinels, robots that ‘protect’ the near future from mutants, who’ve been rounded up and locked away.

The only way to stop them is for Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen to send Hugh Jackman into the past (or at least their X-Men characters will) so that he can try and convince the likes of James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender that they must prevent an assassination and in doing so prevent the rise of the sentinels.

You can also see a few pics of the Sentinels from the Trask Industries website, as well as a gif of Dinklage as Bolivar, below.

2 Guns Red Band Trailer – Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg look hard

July 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Mark Wahlberg reteams with Contraband director Baltasar Kormakur, and adds Denzel Washington into the mix for 2 Gun, which hits cinemas on August 2nd in the US and August 16th in the UK. Now a new red band trailer has arrives to show us what we can expect from the movie.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Academy Award® winner Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg lead an all-star cast in “2 Guns,” an explosive action film that tracks two operatives from competing bureaus who are forced on the run together. But there is a big problem with their unique alliance: Neither knows that the other is an undercover federal agent.

‘For the past 12 months, DEA agent Bobby Trench (Washington) and U.S. naval intelligence officer Marcus Stigman (Wahlberg) have been reluctantly attached at the hip. Working undercover as members of a narcotics syndicate, each man distrusts his partner as much as the criminals they have both been tasked to take down.

‘When their attempt to infiltrate a Mexican drug cartel and recover millions goes haywire, Trench and Stigman are suddenly disavowed by their superiors. Now that everyone wants them in jail or in the ground, the only person they can count on is the other. Unfortunately for their pursuers, when good guys spend years pretending to be bad, they pick up a few tricks along the way.’ [Read more…]
