Feature Version Of Aussie LGBT Short Film Drowning Looks For Funding

May 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Fans of the Boys On Film series of DVDs, which feature a selection of the best LGBT shorts from around the world, may remember Drowning from Boys On Film 6: Pacific Rim. The Aussie slick, Now director Craig Boreham is hoping to turn Drowning into a feature film, and is seeking $67,000 on the crowd-funding site Pozible to help him, with the hope of eventually raising $200,000 to complete the film.

The campaign is near its target, but only has a few hours left until it May 25th deadline.

The movie version of Drowning will be called Teenage Kicks. Here’s the synopsis: In the final moments of his 17th year, Miklós Varga’s world has come crashing down. His plans to run away and escape his claustrophobic migrant family have been brutally undone by the unexpected death of his older brother, Tomi. Only Mik knows the events that led to this tragedy and as far as he can see there is only one person to blame. Himself. He is suddenly torn between his desire to head north and start a new life with his best friend Dan, and his familial obligation to fix his broken family: torn between the life that he wants to have and the life that he feels he’s expected to have. Can he fill the aching void left by his adored sibling or is he toxic and destined to bring ruin upon everyone he loves? Teenage kicks is a journey through the minefield of adolescence, as Mik searches for a way to navigate through his guilt and explosive sexuality to become the man that he wants to become.’

Miles Szanto will play Mik, Bojana Novakovic is set to be Annuska and Luke Arnold will be Tomi. It certainly expands on the ideas of Drowning, including its main character’s fluid sexuality.

Pacific Rim – Drift Space Featurette – See how the giant robots are piloted

May 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The trailers for Pacific Rim have certainly sold the massive special effects and incredible look of the movie, but there’s not been much on the human side of the film. Now a new featurette has popped up which should help with that, as it concentrates on how two human pilots are needed for the giant robots in the movie.

It’s well worth a look.

Here’s the film’s synopsis: ‘When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end.  To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge.  But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju.  On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past.  Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.’

It’s out July 12th.

We’re The Millers Red Band Trailer – Jennifer Aniston is Jason Sudeikis’ fake wife

May 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jennifer Aniston obviously didn’t have enough of fake relationships in Just Go With It, as she’s having another one in We’re The Millers. Now a red band trailer for the movie has arrived, featuring Aniston alongside Jason Sudekis, Emma Roberts and young British actor Will Poulter.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘David is a small-time pot dealer whose clientele includes chefs and soccer moms, but no kids—after all, he has his scruples.  So what could go wrong?  Plenty.  Having been jumped by a trio of gutter punks who steal his stash and his cash, they leave him in major debt to a drug lord. In order to wipe the slate clean, David must now become a big-time drug smuggler by bringing Brad’s latest shipment in from Mexico.  Twisting the arms of his neighbours including a cynical stripper, a wannabe customer and a tatted-and-pierced streetwise teen, he devises a fool proof plan.  One fake wife, two pretend kids and a huge, shiny campervan later, the “Millers” are on a roadtrip that is sure to end with a bang.’

It hits UK cinemas August 23rd. [Read more…]

New The World’s End Trailer – Simon Pegg & Nick Frost are off on an epic pub crawl

May 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After a couple of new posters were released for The World’s End earlier this week, now it’s time for a trailer, which suggests the Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Edgar Wright reunion is going to be a lot of fun.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Director Edgar Wright and actors Simon Pegg and Nick Frost reunite for a third film following the successes “Shaun of the Dead” (2004) and “Hot Fuzz” (2007). In “The World’s End,” 20 years after attempting an epic pub crawl, five childhood friends reunite when one of them becomes hellbent on trying the drinking marathon again. They are convinced to stage an encore by Gary King (Simon Pegg), a 40-year-old man trapped at the cigarette end of his teens, who drags his reluctant pals to their hometown and once again attempts to reach the fabled pub – The World’s End. As they attempt to reconcile the past and present, they realise the real struggle is for the future, not just theirs but humankind’s. Reaching The World’s End is the least of their worries.’

It hits UK cinemas on July 19th. [Read more…]

Delivery Man Teaser – Vince Vaughn has 533 kids!

May 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

If you donate sperm, who knows how many kids you might have running around. For Vince Vaughn it’s 533 whippersnappers he fathered via a fertility clinic (or at least his character in Delivery Man did, I’m sure he doesn’t have that many in real life). Now the first teaser for the comedy has arrived.

The movie is Ken Scott’s English-language remake of his own 2011 Canadian comedy Starbuck. Vaughn is David Wozniak, who fathered 533 kids a couple of decades ago, and now 142 of those kids are suing to learn his identity.

Chris Pratt and Cobie Smulders also star. The film is due in cinemas this autumn. [Read more…]

Don Jon Trailer – Take a look at Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s directorial debut

May 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There’s been a lot of interest in Don Jon, largely because it’s the first film Joseph Gordon Levitt has directed. He also stars in the movie, alongside Scarlett Johnasson, Julianne Moore and Tony Danza. Now we can get out first taste with a trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Jon Martello (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a strong, handsome, good old-fashioned guy. His buddies call him Don Jon due to his ability to “pull” a different woman every weekend, but even the finest fling doesn’t compare to the bliss he finds alone in front of the computer watching pornography. Barbara Sugarman (Scarlett Johansson) is a bright, beautiful, good old-fashioned girl. Raised on romantic Hollywood movies, she’s determined to find her Prince Charming and ride off into the sunset. Wrestling with good old-fashioned expectations of the opposite sex, Jon and Barbara struggle against a media culture full of false fantasies to try and find true intimacy in this unexpected comedy written and directed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt.’

It’s due out later this year. [Read more…]

Twilight’s Jackson Rathbone Joins The Dead Men

May 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jackson Rathbone

Jackson Rathbone

While some actors have done well out of being in the Twilight franchise (Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Anna Kendrick), for many it hasn’t been quite the leap into the a-list it might have seemed like it was going to be. That’s true of Jackson Rathbone, whose role as Jasper Hale hasn’t really equated to major stardom.

The same is true of Diego Boneta, who may have thought the world would be at his feet after scoring the lead role in Rock Of Ages, but we haven’t heard much from him since. Now Rathbone and Boneta are teaming up for the thriller The Dead Men, according to THR.

The movie is about ‘an American running from his past who is brought into a group of young underground radicals called The Dead Men, only to discover a centuries-old spiritual battle.’

Sounds like it’ll be dealing with the supernatural then, but there’s no info on who Rathbone or Boneta will play. Kirk Sullivan, a longtime assistant to mega-producer Joel Silver, will be making his directorial debut with the film, with Andrew Poston on scripting duties.

Universal Plans Timecop Reboot (But No JCVD This Time)

May 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac 3 Comments

timecop-poster1I’ve often thought the 1994 sci-fi action-thriller Timecop was a good idea given a mediocre treatment. Obviously Universal Pictures feels the same, as THR reports that the studio is seeking writers to craft a completely re-imagined movie based on the film’s concept.

Jean-Claude Van Damme starred in the original as a security company agent who regulates time travel. He tangles with a corrupt politician (Ron Silver) with ties to his past. As you might have expected, Jean-Claude Van Damme will not be a part of this new project.

Timecop is based on the Dark Horse Comics series created by Mike Richardson and Mark Verheiden. The 1994 movie also spawned a short-lived Timecop TV series in 1997 and a 2003 straight-to-DVD sequel Timecop 2: The Berlin Decision. There’s no news on when the new film might shoot.

Cate Blanchett & Mia Wasikowska On For Carol, With Todd Haynes Directing

May 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Cate-BlanchettTodd Haynes, director of I’m Not There, Velvet Golmine and Far From Heaven, has signed up to direct Carol, which has Cate Blanchett and Mia Wasikowska attached to star, according to ScreenDaily.

News of the first surfaced last May, when John Carney (Once) was attached to direct. He has had to back out due to scheduling conflicts, with Haynes stepping into the breach. The movie is an adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s 1952 novella The Price of Salt, which follows the relationship between two women in 1950s New York.

One is a young department store clerk (Wasikowska) who dreams of a better life, and the other is a woman (Blanchett) trapped in a loveless marriage. Playwright Phyllis Nagy wrote the screenplay adaptation.

It isn’t known when it might shoot.
