Cloudburst Trailer – Olympia Dukakis & Brenda Fricker play aging lesbians

April 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Cloudburst opened the 2012 London Lesbian & Gay Festival, but it’s only now that it’s heading towards release outside the LGBT film festival circuit, with Wolfe Video releasing a trailer for its upcoming US release (we don’t have a specific date yet, unfortunately).

The film stars a pair of Oscar winners – Olympia Dukakis (Moonstruck) and Brenda Fricker (My Left Foot) – as septuagenarian lesbian lovers Stella and Dottie. After they break out of their nursing home, the duo flee their hometown in Maine and head to Canada to get married, picking up an ally along the way in this most unlikely of road movies.

It’s an interesting subject, as the older generation of gay people has largely been ignored, with rare exceptions such as Beginners. However as those who came of age after Stonewall start to reach pensionable age, it may well be a subject we see addressed more and more. [Read more…]

Eastsiders LGBT Web Series Gets Picked Up By Logo TV

April 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac 2 Comments

eastsiders-slide
It’s fast seeming that the internet is where it’s at to find find interesting gay projects, with a number of well-written and made web series springing up. Last December the first episode of Eastsiders appeared online, followed swiftly by a Kickstarter to get more of the series made.

The TV networks now keep a close eye of the web and so LGBT-focussed Logo TV has now picked Eastsiders and will air the first three episodes online starting April 23rd. (Incidentally, because of this, the first episode that was previously available on Youtube has now been made private, unfortunately).

Logo has previously snapped up web series such as Hunting Season and Vicky & Lysander.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘What happens after the world ends? Written and directed by award winning playwright Kit Williamson, “EastSiders” explores the aftermath of infidelity on a gay couple in Silverlake. When Cal (Kit Williamson) finds out Thom (Van Hansis) has been cheating on him with Jeremy (Matthew McKelligon), their relationship is turned upside down. Will the lies tear them apart or are they just stubborn enough to stay together forever?

‘Drunken outbursts and double standards abound in this dark comedy about the sad and funny messes we make out of our lives. Cal’s best friend Kathy (Constance Wu) is always there for him with a bottle of whiskey in her purse, but she has her own problems with her nice guy boyfriend Ian (John Halbach), even if they’re all in her head. Stephen Guarino guest stars as a party promoter throwing one last bash before the apocalypse.’

Take a look at an update about the series from As The World Turns actor Van Hansis, who tells us a little bit more about the show.

Leonardo DiCaprio & Tobey Maguire Soak In The Jazz Age In A New Great Gatsby Poster

April 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

great-gatsby-poster3
This week we’ve already had characters posters and a trailer for Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby, and now another poster has emerged, showing Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jay Gatsby and Tobey Maguire Nick Carraway enjoying a spin through Jazz era New York.

The Great Gatsby follows would-be writer Nick Carraway as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz, bootleg kings, and sky-rocketing stocks.  Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby, and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy (Carey Mulligan), and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton).  It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within and without of the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles.

The film hits US cinemas on May 10th and the UK on May 17th. Click below for larger versions of the new character posters.

First Look At Beast In X-Men: Days Of Future Past

April 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

x-men-days-of-future-part-beast-tweetThe shoot for X-Men: Days Of Future Past is gearing up in Montreal, and so Bryan Singer has tweeted us our first look at Beast (Nicholas Hoult) in the movie. Well, it’s presumed it’s Beast, even though he does look slightly different and more grown up than he did in X-Men: First Class.

The director also included a quote from Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont’s timeless story Beauty and the Beast, which is rather fitting for this character. It reads, “Many a monster wears the form of a man; it is better of the two to have the heart of a man & the form of a monster”

The movie is due out summer 2014, and hopefully we’ll have plenty more mutant reveals before then.

Godzilla Gets Sally Hawkins For Its Final Lead Role

April 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

sally-hawkinsGodzilla has been shooting for a couple of weeks in Vancouver, Canada, but it’s only just been revealed who’s taken the final leading role – British actress, Sally Hawkins, according to Deadline.

Hawkins will portray a scientist alongside Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, Ken Watanabe, and David Strathairn. Very few details have been released about the plot, but it’ll be a big budget take on the Japanese monster, which is said to be much closer to the spirit of the original that Roland Emmerich’s 1998 Hollywood version.

Gareth Edwards is directing from a screenplay by Dave Callaham, Max Borenstein, and Frank Darabont.
It’ll a change of pace from period dramas for Hawkins, as she most recently starred in Jane Eyre and Great Expectations.

Bradley Cooper Signs Up For Jane Got a Gun

April 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

bradley-cooperHopefully the musical chairs cast and directing problems with Jane Got A Gun have come to an end, with Bradley Cooper stepping in to replace Jude Law in the Western, according to Variety. Jude Law dropped out of the project last month, just one day after original director Lynne Ramsay abruptly left the project on the first day of shooting.

Jude Law himself was a last-minute replacement, boarding the project last month to take over for Michael Fassbender. Jude Law left after Lynne Ramsay departed as he’d only joined the project so that he could work with her.

Gavin O’Connor (Warrior) has taken over in the director’s chair working from a screenplay by Brian Duffield. The movie is about Jane (Natalie Portman), a young wife whose husband comes home riddled with bullet wounds, clinging on to dear life. She seeks the help of an ex-lover (Joel Edgerton) when the outlaw (Bradley Cooper) who shot her husband comes back to finish off the job.

Bradley Cooper is currently shooting David O. Russell’s next movie, and will shoot his Jane Got a Gun scenes once he’s completed that.

April 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jessica-ChastainEven though it’s not likely to start shooting until early next year, Guillermo Del Toro is pulling together a great cast for Crimson Peak. As with the other actors, not specific details are known about the character Chastain will be playing. Guillermo del Toro is directing from a screenplay he is co-writing with British playwright Lucinda Clarkson.

New Stills From Scenes From A Gay Marriage Director’s New Film, West Hollywood Motel

April 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Andrew Callahan in West Hollywood Motel

Andrew Callahan in West Hollywood Motel

Director Matt Riddlehoover had great success with Scenes From A Gay Marriage, which remains a best-seller on DVD in the States. Now he’s readying his follow-up comedy, West Hollywood Motel, and we’ve got three new images from the movie for you to enjoy.

It’s described as “intersecting tales about people who have checked into the same motel room”. The film covers a range of people – gay and straight – playing off of the fact that the majority of the West Hollywood’s population is made up of gay or bisexual men, and that it is also one of the only places in the US where it is illegal to discriminate on the basis of gender identity. The ensemble cast includes Andrew Callahan, Amy Kelly, Phil Leirness, Jared Allman, and Luis A. Gudino (all pictured).

The film is slated for release later this year. Until then, enjoy the new pics.

Bridegrooms Trailer – Take a look at the moving LGBT documentary

April 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Early last year the heartbreaking documentary short, It Could Happen To You, went viral and was watched by millions. It told the story of Shane Bitney Crone and his boyfriend Tom. When tom tragically died, Shane found himself completely frozen out by his boyfriend’s homophobic family, with no recourse as his rights were not recognised.

A couple of months later plans were announced to turn the short into a feature length documentary. At the time it became to highest funded Kickstarter project in history, with over $384,000 pledged to ensure the film became a reality.

Now the trailer for the final documentary, Bridegroom, has been released, which you can watch above. It certainly looks like it’s going to be a moving, emotive film that’ll be well worth watching. Bridegroom will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Shane Bitney Crone commented to Towleroad, “Tom and I were not perfect, but we were perfect for each other. Our love was undeniable, and when I lost him, I lost a large part of myself. No matter how hard Tom’s family tries; they can never erase the love that Tom and I had for each other, and the life that we started together. If Tom and I were legally married, I would never have been so easily disregarded, and knowing that Tom would have wanted his family to embrace me, makes me more determined to fight for this cause. I will never be able to hold Tom again, or tell him that I love him, but this movie may convince many opponents to reconsider their stance on marriage equality, not for me or for Tom, but for love.” [Read more…]
