Park Chan-Wook Heads For Corsica 72

September 18, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Oldboy helmer Park Chan-wook’s first English language film, Stoker, won’t hit cinemas until early next year, but it looks like he’s planning to stick with the English language, as the South Korean director is already eyeing future Hollywood projects.

He recently signed on to direct The Brigands of Rattleborge, and now Variety reports he’s attached to a crime drama called Corsica 72. The movie is based-on-a-true story about two young best friends living in Corsica in 1972 (as the title suggest) who go on to live divergent lives. As one becomes an upstanding business man, the other becomes a gangster, and they find their lives clash when they become interested in the same woman.

Neal Purvis and Robert Wade’s script has previously landed on the Black List of the best unproduced screenplay, so it’s already got a fair amount of steam behind it, although there’s no news on when it might shoot.

Gay Prostitute Film Simple Moves Seeks Completion Funding

September 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A few months ago we featured the trailer for Pau Maso’s movie Simple Moves, and now the film is nearing completion and looking for funds to get the score finished. The people behind the movie have set up an IndieGoGo campaign to raise $6,000 to get the music for the movie done.

While music might not seem the most glamorous parts of a film to fund, it’s one of the most important. One of the biggest issues facing producers of indie films is music, as few festivals or niche distributors will take movies that don’t have music rights cleared or a score they own – to do that, it’s not unknown for more money to be spent on music than on the entire rest of the movie. Simple Moves has Dave Klotz though, who will be composing the score. He’s worked on films such as Exiled, Replicant, Fulltime Killer, The Unleashed, among many other movies. The funding will help him complete the score, and get the movie finished, so it can be submitted to festivals.

Simple Moves tells the story of an illegal Russian boy in the city of New York, whose mother commits suicide and he becomes an escort, ultimately and painfully struggling as he finds a new self who enjoys this newly developed dark side.

You can watch the promo made for the funding campaign above, or click here for the trailer, and of course head over to IndieGoGo campaign to find out more and maybe pledge some cash..

Out In The Open Trailer – Gay celebs talk about being out and proud

September 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Out In The Open seems to have a simple but interesting premise, with gay celebs, politicians and other folks talking about being out and proud, and what they think about homo issues, and the importance of being openly gay in the public arena.

Now a trailer and extended featurette for the documentary have been revealed, with the makers of the movie setting up a Kickstarter campaign to get the film completed. They’re looking for an ambitious $75,000, which represents the final 20% of the costs (the rest was charity funded). The money will pay for ‘Post Production costs – Editing – Color correction – Sound and Music – Travel and equipment rental for final interviews – Print and Advertising – Distribution costs.’

It certainly looks like a doc that will be worth watching, featuring interviews with Olympic diver Greg Louganis, professional poker player Jason Somerville, actor and ally Eric Roberts, and various others, all under the direction of actor Matthew Smith, who decided to come out even though he’d lived in fear of losing acting jobs if he did.

Smith says, “Out in the Open began during Pride Week 2010 in Los Angeles, California as a way to prove to people that the LGBT community is not the way it has been portrayed to the rest of the world. I remember sitting in my hotel room watching tv and thinking to myself “I’m so boring and normal! These stereotypes about the LGBTQ community is bogus, why doesn’t anyone know this?” Since then, Out in the Open has taken on a life of its own, blossoming into beautiful true life stories that will leave you inspired to be out and be open.”

Take a look at the trailer and featurette above and below, and if you fancy giving some cash or just want more information, head over to Kickstarter.

Rupert Everett ‘Can’t Think Of Anything Worse’ Than Two Dad Families

September 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Rupert Everett isn’t a man to tow the party line when it comes to gay issues, and has a refreshing and sometimes exasperating tendency to speak his mind. He’s previously said he’s not a fan of the idea of gay marriage, and now he’s come out against families with two father.

Talking to the Sunday Times, he says, “[My mother] still wishes I had a wife and kids. She thinks children need a father and a mother and I agree with her. I can’t think of anything worse than being brought up by two gay dads. Some people might not agree with that. Fine! That’s just my opinion. I’m not speaking on behalf of the gay community. In fact, I don’t feel like I’m part of any ‘community.’ The only community I belong to is humanity and we’ve got too many children on the planet, so it’s good not to have more.”

He didn’t seem quite a disapproving in 2000, when he starred opposite Madonna in The Next Best Thing, where he played a gay man who ends up having a baby with is straight best friend. But I suppose it was a man and a woman raising a child, so perhaps that’s okay then.

Although everyone is entitled to their opinion, Everett’s answer sounds more like he’s conflating several separate issues – over-population, gay parenting, lack of a sense of community – into something that doesn’t necessarily hold together. And quite why two gay dads is so terrible isn’t clear, other than he does sometimes have issues with his own sexuality, which he could be projecting.

New Hobbit Character Images Revealed

September 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

This week is getting all Tolkien-y, as fans are marking the 75th anniversary of The Hobbit’s publication. Unsurprisingly Peter Jackson and the other makers of the upcoming movie adaptation want to get in on the action, releasing a new gallery of great character images (which you can see above and below). Jackson has also promised a new trailer for the movie on Wednesday, to get us excited for the December 14th release of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

Here’s the film’s synopsis, in case you’re interested, ‘The adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.

‘Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever…Gollum.

‘Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities … A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.’

James Ellroy’s Blood’s A Rover Going Big Screen

September 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It seems Hollywood has suddenly remembered LA Confidential author James Ellroy exists, as Deadline reports that VS Entertainment has picked up Ellroy’s Blood’s A Rover for a film adaptation, while a few days ago I Am Love director Luca Guadagnino signed on to direct a screen version of the author’s The Big Nowhere.

Blood’s A Rover is set in the late 60s and follows the story of Joan Rosen Klein who, against all odds, triumphs against her mobbed-up and politically connected foes to avenge her lost loved ones. Her actions, however, result in changing the course of history for three men: Dwight Holly, who is best known as J. Edgar Hoover’s strong arm goon, a heroin runner building a gambling empire in the Dominican Republic named Wayne Tedrow, and a private-eye named Don Crutchfield. All three men find themselves in pursuit of Klien, and each of them pay a price to live history.

Ellroy commented on the adaptation, “My most recent novel is – not surprisingly – also my best. The story is no less than the psychic inventory of America from 1968 to 1972. I have no doubt that Clark Peterson and Vincent Sieber [of VS Entertainment] will fashion a splendid motion picture from this noir epic.”

The Big Nowhere meanwhile is set in 1950s Los Angeles, when Communist witch-hunts and insanely violent killings are terrorising the community. Three men are plunged into a maelstrom of violence and deceit when their lives become inextricably linked as each one confronts his own personal darkness.

Kevin Costner Up For The Explorers Guild & Draft Day

September 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Kevin Costner’s comeback is picking up steam. After a few fallow years he’s playing Jonathan Kent in Man Of Steel, as well as Jack Ryan’s mentor in the upcoming reboot of the Tom Clancy series (and he may get his own spin-off from that). Now it’s been revealed that Costner has signed with Atria Books for a new serialised illustrated adventure called The Explorers Guild, which is described as being reminiscent of Joseph Conrad and Rudyard Kipling.

The plan is to serialise it across traditional and new media, first as a series of books, then as an animated series, and eventually as live action theatrical films, which Costner intends to produce and star in.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Behind the staid rooms of an old world gentlemen’s club operates a darker, more mysterious organization: The Explorers Guild, a clandestine group of adventurers who seek out the places where light gives way to shadow and reason is usurped by myth. The secrets of this unknown world are hidden in mountain ranges and lost in deserts, sunk to the ocean floor and lodged deep beneath polar ice. The aim of The Explorer’s Guild: to discover the mysteries that lie beyond the boundaries of the known world.

‘Set against the backdrop of World War I, with Western Civilization spiraling into chaos, the first installment in The Explorers Guild series, A Passage to Shambhala, concerns the Guild’s quest to find Shambhala, the golden city of Buddhist myth. Each member is driven toward the City for a different reason: one believes that finding it will save his brother’s life; another hopes that it will reveal a path to spiritual enlightenment. Some believe the power of the city can be used to restore peace, while others are certain that Shambhala is responsible for bringing mankind to the brink of apocalypse.

‘The search will take us from the Polar North to the Mongolian deserts, through the underground canals of Asia to deep into the Himalayas, before the City finally divulges its secrets and the globe-spanning journey plays out to its startling conclusion.’

Costner commented , “A heroic quest with the vivid wildness of Jules Verne, and steeped in world history but with mystical overtones, I believe that The Explorers Guild series will engage readers of all ages in a multi-generational experience that will lend itself to a host of entertainment platforms. As a storyteller and filmmaker, I am intrigued by the inherent resourcefulness, wit, and at times violent nature these characters embody, and I am truly excited to partner with Judith Curr and her team at Atria to bring this epic tale to readers around the world.”

There’s also news via TheWrap that Costner is circling the Ivan Reitman football comedy Draft Day. He’d play the general manager of the Buffalo Bills, who spends his days looking for top players to save his troubled team.

First Look At The New Robocop Suit

September 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The long-delayed remake of Robocop has finally started shooting, and ComingSoon has got hold of the first pics of Joel Kinnaman in his new-look Robocop suit on the set. It’s certainly a different look from the original, and has already had a lot of fans up in arms.

Some have speculated that this won’t be the final look of the suit, and that it’ll be jazzed up with CG bellls and whistles. However a sales poster that’s popped up over as Cine1 suggest that while there could be some computer-generated accents and element, the black armor look is what we’re going to get.

Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, Samuel L. Jackson, Abbie Cornish, Jackie Earle Haley, Michael K. Williams, Jay Baruchel, Jennifer Ehle, and Marianne Jean-Baptiste also star. The film is set for release on August 9th, 2013.

Adam Wingard To Direct Dead Spy Running

September 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Adam Wingard has definitely been showing off his directorial cred with low budget thrillers such as A Horrible Way to Die and You’re Next, which have caught the attention of Hollywood. Now Deadline reports that Warner Bros. has tapped Wingard for their languishing spy thriller Dead Spy Running, with screenwriter Simon Barrett hired to take a stab at the script.

The project is based on the Jon Stock book of the same name, which is the the first in a trilogy. The story follows Daniel Marchant, a young DJ who is framed for the murder of his father, a disgraced MI6 agent. He goes on the run with a beautiful secret agent to uncover his father’s past and clear his name for good.

Warners first picked up the book back in October 2008, with McG was attached to direct. Simon Barrett will rewrite the original adapted script by Stephen Gaghan and Jamie Moss. McG is still involved but only as a producer.
