First Poster For Seth MacFarlane’s Ted Arrives

March 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The creator of Family Guy making a live-action movie about a foul-mouthed teddy is definitely a delicious prospect, and it’ll be a reality when Ted hits UK cinemas on August 3rd. However before then Director Seth MacFarlane brought his feature directorial debut to SXSW for a sneak peek and Q&A session a few days ago.

A poster promoting the event was given away at the Austin, Texas film festival featuring Mark Wahlberg and the title teddy bear character, voiced by MacFarlane, taking a break at the urinals. You can see it above.

Ted revolves around an average Boston guy (Wahlberg) who, when he was young, was granted his dearest wish, that his teddy bear would come to life. Years later the teddy is still his best friend, but the relationship has become strained as rather than being a sweet and nice Care Bears type creature, Ted is a carousing, irresponsible, womanising, pot-smoking slacker, who is getting in the way of his buddy committing to adulthood and the girl he loves.

Jeremy Irons Signs On For Beautiful Creatures

March 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The cast of the young adult novel adaptation, Beautiful Creatures, is fast coming together, with the latest news being that Jeremy Irons is in final negotiations to join the cast of the supernatural love story, according to Variety.

A coming of age story set in the South, Beautiful Creatures – which is the first of a hugely popular series written by authors Kami Garcia and Margaret – is about two star-crossed teenage lovers, Ethan, a local boy, and a mysterious new girl, Lena, who uncover dark secrets about their families, their history and their town. Irons is the most recent in a flurry of casting announcements, joining Viola Davis (Amma), Emma Thompson (Mrs. Lincoln/Sarafine), Emmy Rossum (Ridley), Thomas Mann (Link) and relative newcomers Jack O’Connell (Ethan) and Alice Englert (Lena). Irons will play the role of Macon Ravenwood, Lena’s mysterious and recluse uncle.

Richard LaGravenese (P.S. I Love You) will direct from his own screeplay, with shooting schedules to begin next month. The hope is this will be the first part of a major new teen franchise.

Olivia Wilde and Jason Sudeikis Get Relanxious

March 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Olivia Wilde seems to be in a ridiculous amount of movies, even if few of them have found much box office success (Cowboys Vs. Aliens, In Time etc.). Now she’s got another one, as Deadline says Wilde, Jason Sudeikis, Brie Larson, and Fred Armisen have joined the cast of Relanxious.

The story centres on Barrett (Wilde), a woman riddled with anxiety, who meets and falls for the agoraphobic George (Jason Sudeikis). Because of both their phobias, Barrett and George spend most of their time speaking on the phone, until they finally decide to conquer their fears and be with one another. Brie Larson will play Barrett’s sister, and Fred Armisen will play George’s friend, the only person he has contact with from the outside world.

Christopher Storer will make his directorial debut with Relanxious, working from his own screenplay. Shooting is scheduled for this summer in Chicago.

Julian Fellowes Writing Gypsy Adaptation For Barbra Streisand

March 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

As she hits 70 years of age next month, Barbra Streisand may be a bit old to play a pushy stage mother, but she harbours a desire to bring the classic musical Gypsy to the big screen, although hopefully she’ll change things so she can play a pushy grandmother to make it slightly more realistic.

Now she and producer Joel Silver have set Academy Award-winning writer Julian Fellowes, of Gosford Park and Downton Abbey fame, to pen the screenplay adaptation of Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents’ Tony Award winning musical. Streisand will play Momma Rose in the new version, which will surprisingly be her first musical film since Yentl, which she starred, produced, co-wrote and directed way back in 1983.

Fellowes isn’t a complete musical novice, as he worked on Disney’s stage production of Mary Poppins. Now he’s taking of the show that’s been a classic ever since it first Broadway run in 1959 with Ethel Merman. Since then the show, based on the memoirs of the famous striptease artist, Gypsy Rose Lee, has spawned numerous incarnations including a 1962 film starring Rosalind Russell and Natalie Wood, four Broadway revivals, as well as a made-for-television movie starring Bette Midler in the role Streisand is taking on.

Gypsy is one of the those musical classics that’s still waiting for the definitive film version, and that’s what Streisand hopes she can create, and getting Fellowes involved seems a good move.

Warner Plans Mandrake the Magician Movie

March 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The idea of a Mandrake The Magician movie has floated from studio to studio for years, but now Warner Bros. has joined forces with Atlas Entertainment to try and produce an adaptation of the classic comic strip character, according to Variety.

Lee Falk created Mandrake in 1934, with the illusionist a powerful hypnotist who uses his abilities to fight crime with Lothar, one of the strongest men in the world. Universal Pictures produced a 12-part serial based on the comic strip in 1939, but the character has not been seen on the big screen since then.

Disney owned rights for several years, before they were acquired by Baldwin Entertainment and Hyde Park. Atlas Entertainment picked up the rights in 2009, and even commissioned a script by Janet Peoples and David Webb Peoples (12 Monkeys). Now Warner Bros. and Atlas are seeking new writers for a 21st Century take on the character.

The Happytime Murders Concept Art Online

March 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Happytime Murders has been in development for a long time, with the dark noir drama having funding and various other issues, partly because it’s a dark noir drama, but with puppets. However it’s now moving forward, with Katherine Heigl being linked to one of the human roles last month, and now some rather cool concept art and an official synopsis has arrived.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In a world where puppets co-exist with humans as second class citizens, puppet private eye and disgraced ex-cop, Phil Phillips, is hot on the trail of the serial killer who murdered his brother and is now targeting the cast members of the famous 80s television show, “The Happytime Gang.” As the killings continue, Phil’s former flame, Jenny, is next on the list. It’s up to Phil and his ex-partner, Detective Edwards, to find the culprit, but as bad blood and old resentments resurface the clues start pointing to the only viable suspect, Phil himself. Now he’s on the run with only his wits and hard headed determination, as he tries to solve, The Happytime Murders.’

Brian Henson (son of Jim) is set to direct, although it isn’t clear when it might go into production.

Anthony Mandler Takes On Last Days Of American Crime

March 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Commercials and music videos have become the de facto training ground for Hollywood directors nowadays, replacing TV as the main place top-flight talent first gets discovered. The latest getting a shot a Hollywood is Anthony Mandler, who has worked with Rihanna, Jay-Z and Eminem on music videos and with David Beckham on commercials, and is now in early talks to direct his first film, The Last Days of American Crime, taking over from the previously attached F. Gary Gray.

Noomi Rapace and Sam Worthington are already attached to the movie, which is based on a graphic novel by Rick Remender. Here’s the official synopsis: ‘In the not-too-distant future as a final response to terrorism and crime, the U.S. government plans in secret to broadcast a signal making it impossible for anyone to knowingly commit unlawful acts. To keep this from the public, the government creates a distraction, installing a new currency system using digital charge cards.

‘Enter: Graham Brick. A career criminal never quite able to hit the big score, Graham intends to steal one of the charging stations, skip the country and live off unlimited funds for the rest of his life. But the media has leaked news of the anti-crime signal one week before it was to go live…and now Graham and his team have just a few days to turn the crime of the century into the last crime in American history.’

It’s not known when the film may start shooting.

Dead Spy Running For Director Jonathan Levine

March 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jonathan Levine got huge amounts of indie cred for All The Boys Love Mandy Lane and The Wackness, and since going slightly more mainstream with the much praised 50/50 last year, he’s been even more in demand. He recently filmed the zombie rom-com Warm Bodies and may move from that to Dead Spy Running, according to Twitch.

John Stock’s book has been through various Hollywood hands since it was first optioned in 2008, with the most recent being McG, who was set to direct for a while. Now he’s just producing and it’s him who’s keen to get Levine onboard. Screenwriter Steven Gaghan had been attached to helm for a while, but he stepped back due to scheduling issues and so will now just write the script.

A sort of lightly funny take on Bond, Dead Spy Running follows MI9 agent Daniel Marchant whose been rendered inactive thanks to American suspicions and trouble with his father. He then decides he wants to run the London marathon. While he thinks the worst that can happen is a sprained ankle and exhaustion, it turns out this decision comes fraught with danger from international terrorists.

This will be just one of the projects on Levine’s plate, as he’s also attached to Jamaica (reuniting him with 50/50 collaborators Will Reiser and Seth Rogen), Little Girl Lost and dystopian novel adaptation Legend.

Warner Bros. May Take On The Dark Tower

March 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After years of The Dark Tower being passed from pillar to post through various studios and filmmakers, but never getting close to being made, it finally seemed ambitious plans were coming together at Universal, with Ron Howard directing three movies, which would have bridging TV series. However then the studio looked at the costs, wouldn’t commit to more than a single film, and so the whole thing fell apart last July.

Since then Howard and his producing partner Brian Grazer have been looking for a new home, and it seems they may have found one in Warner Bros, according to Variety. Howard has already agreed to slightly split the project up, with HBO handling the TV part, and now Warner hopefully coming on board for the film. As both Warner and HBO are part of the same company, it makes sense for them to work together on this.

JavierBardem has long been attached to star in The Dark Tower as Roland Deschain, a nomadic gunslinger who discovers he is humanity’s last hope, as he goes out in search of The Dark Tower. With all the uncertainty, Javier Bardem is only loosely attached to the role now, and his participation hinges on his schedule. If a deal is made with Warner Bros., it is believed that production may start in early 2013.
