A Wrinkle in Time (Cinema Review) – Disney magic or misfire?

March 22, 2018 By George Elcombe Leave a Comment

Starring: Storm Reid, Reese Witherspoon, Oprah Winfrey, Mindy Kaling, Chris Pine
Director: Ana DuVernay
Running Time: 109 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: March 23rd 2018 (UK)

Disney are having a huge amount of financial and critical success with live action remakes of their classic animated features, but not so much with original properties. For example, I was hyped at the prospect of Tomorrowland (2015), but was disappointed with the result and, unsurprisingly, it was a flop. This is a shame as big studios with big budgets need to take risks in order to bring fresh stories to the screen. There are successes such as Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), but also some misfires along the way and unfortunately this movie is one of them.

A Wrinkle in Time is apparently a passion project for director Ava DuVernay who has been developing it for a number of years. It is based on a bestselling book series which I have never heard of. Maybe it’s that the book was huge in America or that I’ve never heard of it simply due to the fact it hasn’t already been translated to the big screen before. [Read more…]

Professor Marston And The Wonder Women (DVD Review) – A bisexual polyamorous relationship births a comic book icon

March 20, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Luke Evans, Rebecca Hall, Bella Heathcote, Connie Britton
Director: Angela Robinson
Running Time: 104 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: March 19th 2018 (UK)

It must have seemed like the perfect time for this movie. Coming just after the huge success of the Wonder Woman movie, Professor Marston And The Wonder Women explores the birth of the character. However, despite some decent reviews it didn’t make much of a dent at the box office and got none of the award love it was probably hoping for.

The Professor Marston of the title is William Moulton Marston, a psychology lecturer at Harvard in the early 1940s, whose theories include trying to promote better equality between the sexes. His smart and forceful wife, Elizabeth (Rebecca Hall) is well aware of the era’s gender issues, as Harvard won’t give her a doctorate because she’s a woman. [Read more…]

Hurricane Bianca: From Russia With Hate Teaser Trailer – Roy Haylock’s drag creation is getting a sequel

March 20, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

When it was first announced that Rupaul’s Drag Race alum Bianca Del Rio (aka Roy Haylock) was going to star in a movie – Hurricane Bianca – a lot of people assumed it was going to be a vanity project disaster. However the film turned out to be surprisingly fun and was successful enough that it’s getting a sequel.

A brief preview for the movie has been released, showing the return of the foul-mouthed Bianca, as well as Rachel Dratch’s power-hungry Deborah Ward.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘After winning over the staff and students of Milford High School, chemistry teacher Richard Martinez aka Bianca Del Rio (Roy Haylock) sent her nemesis Vice Principal Deborah “Debbie” Ward (Rachel Dratch) to jail in a flawlessly executed plan. When Debbie is released from jail, she conjures up a scheme to do away with Bianca Del Rio once and for all, by luring her on a dangerous journey to Russia to accept a teaching award and cash prize. Filled with laughs, celebrity cameos and America’s drag superstars, HURRICANE BIANCA: FROM RUSSIA WITH HATE is packed with surprises and unlikely partnerships that spark friendship and acceptance.’

The film will be out in the US on May 18th. In the UK Hurricane Bianca went straight to Netflix, so hopefully the sequel will too. [Read more…]

Take Your First Look At Renee Zellweger Playing The Iconic Judy Garland

March 19, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

When Renee Zellweger returned to the public eye after a short career break, there were loads of (rather sexist) articles about how different she looked. Well, get ready not to recognise her again – but this time it’s deliberate, as she’s playing Judy Garland.

The image was released to mark the start of principal photography of Judy, which focuses on Garland’s legendary London concert series which took place shortly before she died.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Winter 1968 and showbiz legend Judy Garland arrives in Swinging London to perform in a sell-out run at The Talk of the Town.

‘It is 30 years since she shot to global stardom in THE WIZARD OF OZ, but if her voice has weakened, its dramatic intensity has only grown.

‘As she prepares for the show, battles with management, charms musicians, and reminisces with friends and adoring fans, her wit and warmth shine through. Even her dreams of romance seem undimmed as she embarks on a courtship with Mickey Deans, her soon-to-be fifth husband. And yet Judy is fragile. After working for 45 of her 47 years, she is exhausted; haunted by memories of a childhood lost to Hollywood; gripped by a desire to be back home with her kids. Will she have the strength to go on?

‘Featuring some of her best-known songs, including the timeless classic ‘Over the Rainbow’, JUDY celebrates the voice, the capacity for love and the sheer pizzazz of “the world’s greatest entertainer”.’

The movie also stars Jessie Buckley (War and Peace), Finn Wittrock (American Horror Story) and Michael Gambon (Harry Potter), with Rupert Goold (King Charles III) directing from a script by Tom Edge (The Crown). Take a look at the full image below.

Final Portrait Trailer – Armie Hammer is going gay again & a little bit arty

March 18, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Not too many years ago straight actors were being praised for being ‘brave’ for playing a single gay role, but then never playing an LGBT part ever again – partly because agents thought two gay roles would harm someone’s career. Now though we have people like Armie Hammer, who’s played several gay roles and is currently has two of them back to back, with the acclaimed Cale Me By Your Name and the Stanley Tucci written and directed biopic Final Portrait.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘FINAL PORTRAIT is the story of the touching and offbeat friendship between American writer and art-lover James Lord and Alberto Giacometti, as seen through Lord’s eyes and revealing unique insight into the beauty, frustration, profundity and sometimes the chaos of the artistic process. Set in 1964, while on a short trip to Paris, Lord is asked by his friend, Giacometti, to sit for a portrait. The process, promises Giacometti, will take only a few days and so Lord agrees — ultimately wondering “how much longer can it go on like this?”’

Lord was gay, although this was only revealed publicly in his obituary after he died in 2009. The film is already out on DVD in the UK, and will be released in US cinemas on March 23rd. [Read more…]

Love, Simon Actor Joey Pollari Reveals That He’s Gay

March 18, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Greg Berlanti’s gay-themed teen movie Love, Simon has received some great reviews and strong word of mouth since it opened in the US last Friday. The promotion of the film has also revealed a few interesting titbits about the cast, such as Joey Pollari revealing publicly for the first time that he is gay himself.

Pollari, who plays Lyle in the movie, is a former Disney actor who appeared in the likes of Skyrunner and Avalon High, as well MTV’s US version of The Inbetweeners. The 23-year-old spoke to The Advocate about how he came out to family and friends when he was 18, but had now decided to be open more widely.

He says of coming out, “I think all my friends and family knew on some level. I think maybe two people were shocked.”

“The only part that was difficult was me coming out to myself. And I think that is the most difficult coming-out.” He adds that “My mom knew. She laid hints for me everywhere,” and was waiting for him to come out.

While the film’s lead actor, Nick Robinson, is straight in real life, he spoke to Ellen recently about how his younger brother same out as gay during the making of Love, Simon. He told her, “I think that he had been dealing with this for a long time and this was – I think the timing was sort of coincidental but one of the best things that came out of this movie is just being able to talk to him. I think that’s the strength of a film like this is that it starts conversations, and I hope that it can do that for more people.”

Wrinkle In Time’s Ava DuVernay To Helm DC Superhero Movie, The New Gods

March 18, 2018 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

A Wrinkle In Time might not have been the all-conquering box office juggernaut many had hoped the first $100+ million budget film directed by a woman of colour would be. However, while historically a single underperforming film would knock a female director’s career massively off-track, Ava DuVernay is bucking that trend, with Deadline reporting that she’s set to direct The New Gods for DC/Warner Bros.

Deadline says of the Jack Kirby created comic, ‘The New Gods was the Genesis of the uber-villain Darkseid. Also called “Fourth World,” the Kirby creation debuted in a trilogy of related comics written and drawn by Kirby that were published in the very early 1970s: New Gods, Forever People and Mister Miracle. The New Gods came into existence after the world of the gods of classic mythology were destroyed during Ragnarok. The deities inhabit two planets: one is New Genesis, a lush paradise, and the other Apokolips, which sounds like Dante’s version of hell. War ensues.’

DuVernay already knows the comics and its character, as she’s previously said her favourite superhero is Big Barda, who is one of the New Gods. The film is apparently being planned as a standalone movie rather than something that will tie into DC’s other movies. It’s now known when we might see it in cinemas.

Lucas Hedges Playing Shia LaBeouf In Honey Boy, With LaBeouf Playing His Own Dad!

March 18, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

At this point it shouldn’t come as too much of a shock to find out Shia LaBeouf is doing something that sounds a bit odd – indeed the only real shock would be if he signed on to make another Transformers movie. With Honey Boy he’s getting a bit personal and meta, playing his own father, while Variety reports Lucas Hedges has signed on to play a younger version of LaBeouf.

It’s a ballsy move for Hedges as he’ll be part of a movie loosely based on LeBeouf’s own life, and follows a ‘child star attempting to mend his relationship with his law-breaking, alcohol-abusing father over the course of a decade’. The title of the film, Honey Boy, comes from Shia’s childhood nickname. It’s got to be intimidating though for Hedges to be playing the person he’s starring with, while you have to hope something so personal won’t get to Shia too much.

Alma Har’el is set to direct the movie. It’s not clear when it might shoot.

Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami (DVD Review) – An intimate look at the enigmatic icon

March 13, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Grace Jones
Director: Sophie Fiennes
Running Time: 115 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: March 4th 2018 (UK)

Enigmatic is an overused word, but it’s one that seems to fit Grace Jones. She’s been famous since the 1970s, but quite what and who she is has always been elusive. She’s a model and a singer, she’s been a Bond girl and co-starred in Conan The Barbarian. Her shows could be viewed as Avant Garde performance art or as a use of striking visuals to cover for middling music. Just visually she is iconic – both an archetype of Amazonian warrior femininity (with the most astonishingly long legs), and yet completely androgynous.

Jones is also impressively ageless, looking pretty much the same now as she did in the 1980s.

She’s someone who seems like we view her through a veil and who isn’t quite on the same planet as the rest of us. To some she is a series of moments – singing while hula-hooping outside Buckingham Palace at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Concert, infamously slapping guest show host Russell Harty in the 1980s, or base-jumping off the Eiffel Tower in A View To A Kill. Moonlight Director Barry Jenkins Reveals The Oscars Speech He Never Gave

March 13, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last year the Oscars suffered just about the biggest mix-up it was even possible for it to suffer when the wrong Best Picture winner was read out. The result was that when it was finally revealed that the gay-themed Moonlight was the real winner, in the confusion the makers of the movie didn’t get to give the speeches they’d planned and say what they wanted to.

The Academy gave director Barry Jenkins and the film’s producers the chance to receive their Best Picture award properly at this year’s ceremony, they declined as it couldn’t recapture the moment they had lost. However, at SXSW Jenkins has revealed what he would have said.

He starts with a shout-out to Tarell McCraney, whose wrote the play the movie was based on. Here’s the speech, as reprinted by Deadline, “Tarell and I are Chiron. We are that boy. And when you watch Moonlight, you don’t assume a boy who grew up how and where we did would grow up and make a piece of art that wins an Academy Award — certainly don’t think he would grow up to win Best Picture. I’ve said that a lot and what I’ve had to admit is that I placed those limitations on myself. I denied myself that dream — not you, not anyone else — me. And so, to anyone watching this who sees themselves in us, let this be a symbol, a reflection that leads you to love yourself. Because doing so may be the difference between dreaming at all and somehow, through the Academy’s grace, realizing dreams you never allowed yourself to have.”
