A Wrinkle in Time (Cinema Review) – Disney magic or misfire?

March 22, 2018 By George Elcombe Leave a Comment

Starring: Storm Reid, Reese Witherspoon, Oprah Winfrey, Mindy Kaling, Chris Pine
Director: Ana DuVernay
Running Time: 109 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: March 23rd 2018 (UK)

Disney are having a huge amount of financial and critical success with live action remakes of their classic animated features, but not so much with original properties. For example, I was hyped at the prospect of Tomorrowland (2015), but was disappointed with the result and, unsurprisingly, it was a flop. This is a shame as big studios with big budgets need to take risks in order to bring fresh stories to the screen. There are successes such as Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), but also some misfires along the way and unfortunately this movie is one of them.

A Wrinkle in Time is apparently a passion project for director Ava DuVernay who has been developing it for a number of years. It is based on a bestselling book series which I have never heard of. Maybe it’s that the book was huge in America or that I’ve never heard of it simply due to the fact it hasn’t already been translated to the big screen before. [Read more…]

New A Wrinkle In Time Trailer – Oprah, Reese Witherspoon & Chris Pine star in Ana DuVernay’s family adventure

January 23, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With its first teaser trailer, A Wrinkle In Time suggested it might be something unusual and rather special. That feeling has continued to grow as we’ve seen more of the movie, with hints that this could be a ‘kid’s film’ that’s intense, beautiful and very entertaining.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From visionary director Ava DuVernay comes Disney’s “A Wrinkle in Time,” an epic adventure based on Madeleine L’Engle’s timeless classic which takes audiences across dimensions of time and space, examining the nature of darkness versus light and, ultimately, the triumph of love. Through one girl’s transformative journey led by three celestial guides, we discover that strength comes from embracing one’s individuality and that the best way to triumph over fear is to travel by one’s own light.’

The movie is due out in the UK on March 23rd 2018. Take a look at the new trailer below. [Read more…]

A Wrinkle In Time Teaser Trailer – Oprah, Reese Witherspoon & Chris Pine star in Ana DuVernay’s family adventure

July 15, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There was already a fair amount interest in the movie version of A Wrinkle In Time, both because Madeline L’Engle‘s 1962 novel is a bit of a classic, and it’s the first ever $100+ million movie directed by a black woman. Now we’ve got out first look at the film, with a teaser that’s a bit of a stunner.

On this evidence, it could be one of the most interest and perhaps bizarre movies of 2018.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The film, which is an epic adventure based on Madeleine L’Engle’s timeless classic which takes audiences across dimensions of time and space, examining the nature of darkness versus light and ultimately, the triumph of love.

The film stars: Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Michael Peňa, Levi Miller, Deric McCabe, André Holland, Rowan Blanchard with Zach Galifianakis and Chris Pine and introduces Storm Reid.’

New Home Again Trailer – Reese Witherspoon ends up with an unexpected chosen family

June 17, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Reese Witherspoon returns to the genre she’s had the greatest success with – the rom-com – with Home Again. However, she’s grown up a bit since Legally Blonde, as she’s now playing a woman who’s recently become a single mom and decides to change her life.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘HOME AGAIN stars Reese Witherspoon (Wild, This Means War, Legally Blonde) as Alice Kinney in a modern romantic comedy. Recently separated from her husband (Michael Sheen, Passengers, Nocturnal Animals), Alice decides to start over by moving back to her hometown of Los Angeles with her two young daughters, and struggles to get her fledgling design career off the ground whilst also navigating the family’s new life. During a night out on her 40th birthday, Alice meets three young, charismatic filmmakers (Nat Wolff, Pico Alexander and Jon Rudnitsky) who she decides to take in while they try their hand in Hollywood. An unconventional family dynamic emerges, leading them all on an unexpected journey of discovery.

‘Produced by Nancy Meyers (The Intern, It’s Complicated, What Women Want, The Holiday) and written and directed by her daughter Hallie Meyers-Shyer, HOME AGAIN is a story of love, friendship, and the families we create. And one very big life lesson: Starting over is not for beginners..’

The movie will be in UK cinemas at the end of September. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Hot Pursuit (Blu-ray Review)

November 21, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Reese Witherspoon, Sofia Vergara, Matthew Del Negro, Robert Kazinsky, Michael Mosley
Director: Anne Fletcher
Running Time: 87 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: November 23rd 2015 (UK)

Hot Pursuit must have seemed like a slam dunk. Get two popular actresses who’ve had comedy success, give them a script that’s a little similar to The Heat and bring in a director who had a big hit with The Proposal. However, the resulting movie flopped at the cinemas and has an abysmally low rating of 7% on Rotten Tomatoes.

To be fair to it though, it’s not as dreadful as that might suggest. You can almost feel the critics reacting to the fact it all very forced – a movie that from the ground up feels cynically contrived to pander to the audience and as a result ends up lacking real heart. However, everyone involved is obviously extremely keen to please, rather like an overly keen party host, where you can appreciate the effort even if you wish they wouldn’t try so hard. [Read more…]

Reese Witherspoon Will Be Disney’s Live Action Tinker Bell

May 24, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

reese-witherspoon-wild-slideA few months ago Disney revealed that they were working on a live action film featuring Peter Pan’s fairy friend, Tinker Bell – which considering the success of their Disney’s Fairies line of merchandise and film, isn’t surprising.

Now they’ve found their fairy, as THR reports that Reese Witherspoon is attached to star in and produce Tink. Not much is known about the plot, but it appears it will follow in the footsteps of Maleficent of taking a classic Disney character and showing us a new side to her, as well as to the familiar story.

That may suggest it will explain why she seems so jealous in the Disney animated movie when Peter pays attention to another woman (and may also go into why she doesn’t speak in the film, but has since been given a voice by the House Of Mouse).

Unlike Maleficent though, this won’t be a huge mega-budget movie, instead being conceived as a midrange movie.
