Dane DeHaan Is Looking Cool In A New Valerian & The City Of A Thousand Planets Pic

July 21, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

valerian-picFor many, Valerian & The City Of A Thousand Planets is a bit of an unknown quantity. While Luc Besson is behind the camera, it’s not something they’ll have heard much about. That’s something that makers will be hoping to change with theor upcoming Comic-Con panel. However, there are some who are very excited about the sci-fi movie, which is based on a classic graphic novel that  helped inspire the likes of Star Wars and Avatar.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Rooted in the classic graphic novel series, Valerian and Laureline- visionary writer/director Luc Besson advances this iconic source material into a contemporary, unique and epic science fiction saga.

‘Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are special operatives for the government of the human territories charged with maintaining order throughout the universe. Valerian has more in mind than a professional relationship with his partner- blatantly chasing after her with propositions of romance. But his extensive history with women, and her traditional values, drive Laureline to continuously rebuff him.

‘Under directive from their Commander (Clive Owen), Valerian and Laureline embark on a mission to the breathtaking intergalactic city of Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis comprised of thousands of different species from all four corners of the universe. Alpha’s seventeen million inhabitants have converged over time- uniting their talents, technology and resources for the betterment of all. Unfortunately, not everyone on Alpha shares in these same objectives; in fact, unseen forces are at work, placing our race in great danger.’

A new image from the movie has been released, where it has to be said, DeHaan is looking very cool. The film will be in cinemas next year.

New Power Rangers Pic Unmasks The New Heroes

July 21, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

power-rangers-picThe makers of the new Power Rangers movie are certainly trying to build the hype, while also attempting to underline that this time around it won’t be so cheesy, the old-style spandex suits are history and, presumably, the special effects won’t be men in suits stomping on models of buildings. Now a new pic has been released giving us a fresh look at the line-up of heroes.

In the pic above, from left to right you have Kimberly the Pink Ranger (Naomi Scott), Billy the Blue Ranger (RJ Cyler), Jason the Red Ranger (Dacre Montgomery), Zack the Black Ranger (Ludi Lin), and Trini the Yellow Ranger (Becky G). What we don’t see are Elizabeth Banks as the new Rita Repulsa and Bryan Cranston as Zordon.

The movie is due in cinemas early next year. Click here to check out the recent character posters.

Turns Out John Cho Had Misgivings About Gay Sulu Too

July 20, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

star-trek-beyond-john-cho-hikaru-suluWhat was supposed to be a progressive moment for blockbuster cinema got a little more complicated after it turned out George Takei wasn’t overly impressed with Sulu becoming gay in the rebooted franchise. While Takei later clarified that he was delighted there was a gay character would just have preferred it not to be Sulu, it turns out he’s not the only one who was uncertain, as John Cho was too, who plays the new version of the character.

Talking to avclub he says, “I was concerned for a few reasons. I was concerned that George wouldn’t like it, and it turned out to be true. But I was actually concerned that he wouldn’t like it for a different reason. I thought that George would object because he’s a gay actor who was playing straight. I know that was difficult, that he couldn’t come out and that he had crafted a straight character. Then, now, because he’s an activist and he’s out of the closet—clearly, this is an homage a little bit to him—[I worried] he would object to us taking that from his life and say, “Hey, I was a gay actor who created a straight character, and now you’re making him gay because I’ve come out of the closet?,” that we were just seeing him for his sexual orientation. So I thought that would be where he would object. It turns out not to be his objection. But that’s what I was worried about.”

He also had a couple of other worries, adding, “Asian men have been basically eunuchs in American cinema and television, and I thought maybe it would be seen as a continuation of that”.

Cho also wondered if it might accidentally send the wrong message, as, “I was concerned that because this is the same genetic Sulu—although we’re in an alternate timeline—that we would be inadvertently implying that sexual orientation was a choice.”

However, he ultimately thinks it’s a very good thing. “We’re executing [Star Trek creator Gene] Roddenberry’s intent, I think: infinite diversity in infinite combinations. It’s very much a part of the ethos of Star Trek. I have to say, all things considered, it’s working great, and I’m proud of it,’ he says.

There is something we won’t be see though, which is a kiss between Sulu and his husband, as it’s been cut. Cho told Vulture, “It wasn’t like a make-out session. We’re at the airport with our daughter. It was a welcome-home kiss. I’m actually proud of that scene, because it was pretty tough. We’re two straight guys and had to get to a very loving, intimate place. It was hard to do on the fly. We had to open up. It came off well, in my view.”

Surprisingly, Sulu’s husband is played by the film’s co-screenwriter, Doug Jung, as, “We were in Vancouver first and we finished up the production in Dubai and that scene was in Dubai and I was like, ‘Hey, so who’d you get?’ They were like, ‘We can’t find anybody! Doug may have to play him!’ It started out as a joke. I was like, ‘Haha.’ And then at some point they were not joking. We definitely had trouble finding East Asians first off, and then actors willing to play gay. We had a guy and then his parents really objected. Basically, we couldn’t find an Asian actor willing to play gay in Dubai is my understanding.”

However, it was important to Cho that Sulu had an Asian husband, but perhaps not for the reasons you might think. He says, “Basically it was a little Valentine to the gay Asian friends that I grew up with. This may be presumptuous, but I always felt the Asian gay men that I knew had much heavier cultural-shame issues. This is probably more so for my generation than for yours, but I felt like those guys didn’t date Asian men because of that cultural shame. So I wanted it to seem really normal in the future. I thought that would be the most normal thing, that there was zero shame in the future. I don’t know if that hit or not, but it was something that I felt in my gut and asked for that.”

Two Naked Gay Guys Episodes 1 & 2 – A web series that’s more than just a provocative title

July 19, 2016 By Tim Isaac 2 Comments

two-naked-gay-guys-ep1If you’re trying to get gay people to watch something, calling it ‘Two Naked Gay Guys’ isn’t a bad idea. It’s certainly worked, as the first episode of the New Zealand made web series already has over 100,000 views on Youtube.

Now the second episode has been released, so we’re taking the opportunity to post both of them so you can get a taste for the show. The title isn’t kidding, as the two main characters don’t wear a lot of clothes, but as this is Youtube, don’t expect to see many dangly bits.

The men initially hook up for a bit of no string fun (but the show is keen to show they keep things safe!), but that starts to develop into something more. By the second episode they’re starting to wonder whether they want to be as casual about things as they’re outwardly saying. It’s well worth a look, so take a look at it below. [Read more…]

Looking & Mean Girls’ Daniel Franzese Has Announced His Engagement

July 19, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

daniel-franzese-engagementDaniel Franzese gained a huge amount of fans as the ‘too gay to function’ Damian in Mean Girls, and since then he’s popped up in War Of The Worlds, I Spit On You Grave and more recently HBO’s Looking. However, he’s currently got something a bit more exciting that his acting resume happening in his life, as he’s announced that he’s engaged to boyfriend Joseph Bradley Phillips.

Franzese was the one who popped the question, asking Joey to marry him in a Starbucks in North Hollywood where the duo had their first date. The actor apparently gave the ring to a barista, who then called out ‘Mr and Mr Franzese!’ when the coffees were ready (which might sound a little presumptuous that Joey’s going to take his name, but his reps have already confirmed they will both be Mr. Franzese once married, so presumably it’s something they’d already talked about). Instead of coffee, Joey was given a cup with the ring inside, at which point Daniel dropped to one knee.

“Since I first saw you here, you have opened your heart to me, and I vow to God that for the rest of my life to honor and protect that heart if you will be my husband. Will you marry me?” said Franzese.

Luckily Joey said yes. Congratulations to both of them. [Read more…]

Disposable Teens: Episodes 6 & 7 – Find out what’s next for gay homeless teen Austin

July 18, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

disposable-teens-episode-7The first season of Disposable Teens was a great watch, following teenager Austin, who was forced out of his family home after he came out as gay. Inevitably that caused all manner of problems, as well as some slivers of hope as Austin began to piece a family of his own choosing together. However, he also ended up becoming prey to a charismatic pornographer named Madison.

Now the show is back for Season 2, with episodes 6 and 7 having arrived. At the end of Season 1, Austin’s fate was hanging in the balance as he literally stood on the ledge contemplating suicide. Season 2 starts to piece together what happened after that pivotal moment, as well as exploring his beginnings of his relationship with Houston.

The show was inspired by director Brian Pelletier own experiences as a young, gay teen runaway, and is one of the few shows to look at the issues homeless LGBT people face. It’s a topic that should get more attention, as LGBT youth are disproportionately affected by homelessness.

You can take a look at Episodes 6 and 7 below. More new episodes will be arriving each Monday until August 8th. Click here, here and here to watch Disposable Teens episode 1-5. [Read more…]

Sparrow Trailer – Take a look at the gay-themed short film, which needs your help

July 18, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

sparrow-slideThe gay-themed short film Sparrow is currently in post-production, and to support that it’s released a trailer. However, it could also do with a bit of help, as the New Zealand short is currently crowdfunding on Boosted to help get it finished.

The film is ‘a beautiful, non-spoken 15-minute story set in the 1960’s, and is told from the perspective of Jim, a small boy who believes he can fly. But his life is overshadowed by a story about his grandfather who died a hero in World War 2. But he discovers that the legend that his father so adamantly clings to, is a lie. His grandfather was a gay man who saw the futility of war and deserted in protest when his lover was shot in the dugouts of Egypt. In unraveling the truth behind what happened, Jim discovers strength in his grandfather’s actions and stands up to the bullies at his school in an unexpected way.’

Writer/director Welby Ings comments, “Sparrow is a distinctive New Zealand story located in the beautiful, yet slightly surreal world of blasted quarries, gravel roads, abandoned psychiatric hospitals and wooden schools. Here, hypnotic and graceful camera movement seduces us into the almost magical realism of the narrative.”

You can take a look at the teaser below, which suggests this is going to be a beautiful and tragic story. If you want to help get Sparrow finished, head over to Boosted. [Read more…]

Antonio Banderas To Play Gay Fashion Legend Gianni Versace In New Biopic

July 18, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Antonio-BanderasAntonio Banderas has long been an admirer of Gianni Versace, and now he’s set to play the fashion designer in a new biopic, according to WWD. Pelle the Conqueror and The House Of The Spirits’ Bille August is set to direct the movie, which will start shooting in December.

The movie will follow Versace’s story, who went from being a small town Italian boy who apprenticed in his mother’s sewing business to becoming one of the most renowned fashion designers in history and head of a clothing empire. He was also openly gay, and had been with his partner since 1982. Versace was tragically killed by Andrew Cunanan in 1997, who was on a killing spree having murdered three other people in the preceding weeks. It’s still now known if Versace was deliberately targeted, and if he was, why Cunanan would have done so (the murderer killed himself eight days after shooting Gianni, and so could not say why he’d done it).

Banderas has a great love for fashion, and has been studying fashion design at Central Saint Martins in London. He presented his first collection in collaboration with Scandinavian high-street label Selected in May.

However, the Versace film is completely unofficial, with the fashion group he founced saying, that ‘it has neither authorized nor had any involvement whatsoever in the forthcoming movie about Versace. The movie should only be seen as a work of fiction.’

Disney Star Ross Lynch Turning Gay Serial Killer For Indie Movie My Friend Dahmer

July 18, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ross-lynchRoss Lynch is perhaps best known for appearing in the hit Disney channel movie, Teen Beach Party and the same channel’s series Austin & Ally, but now he’s got a very different role, as it’s been announced he’ll be playing infamous serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer in My Friend Dahmer, according to THR. Marc Meyers is set to direct the movie, adapted from Derf Backderf’s critically acclaimed graphic novel.

The 70s-set movie follows Dahmer before he became a killer, as he ‘struggles with a difficult family life and thoughts of wanting to kill.’

Dahmer is of course one of the most famous serial killers in history, who killed at least 17 people, most of whom he’d picked up at Milwaukee gay bars. The fact that he kept body parts, ate parts of them and had sex with their corpses ensured he stood out from nearly all other killers. He said what he really wanted was to create a kind of zombie so that the person would never leave him, and managed to kill several of his victims while injecting things into their brains as part of his experimentation. He also defied the stereotypical image of a monster, as Dahmer was quite handsome and most people thought he was pretty normal until it was discovered what he was really doing. He was killed in prison by another inmate in 1994.

Fourth Rebooted Star Trek Film Coming With Chris Hemsworth Returning

July 18, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Chris-HemsworthBack in 2009 nobody really knew what a Chris Hemsworth was. His biggest role was a couple hundred episodes of Aussie soap opera Home & Away, before he scored a tiny part in the rebooted Star Trek, playing Captain Kirk’s dad, George, who didn’t last more than the first few minutes before dying. However, it turns out that won’t be the last we’ll see of his in the renewed franchise.

He may have gone onto to the superpowered heights of being Thor, but Paramount has announced that even though Star Trek Beyond hasn’t been released yet, they’re already working on the next film and that it will bring back Hemsworth.

What we don’t know is how George Kirk will return, although with Star Trek there are plenty of options. He might be brought into the future or the crew could end up back in the past. Alternatively, it may turn out he didn’t die after all. We do know the two Kirk’s will meet, with George described as, ‘a man he never had a chance to meet, but whose legacy has haunted him since the day he was born.’

Chris Pine is already confirmed to return as Jame Kirk, and the likes Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho and Simon Pegg are expected to be back too. It’s not known how the film will deal with the tragic death of Anton Yelchin, and whether it means the character of Chekov will be retired.
